for the very simple reason of utter decimation of everything it spent the entire Galaxy S legacy (12y+) perfecting
>stagnant hardware upgrades after s20x (still stuck on USB 3.2, DP 1.4, 45W wired, no 8K out, let alone normie concerns like camera modules not upgraded / battery capacity not upgraded for x years)
>headphone jack removal from s10 5g onwards
>SD card slot removal after s20x
>Windows-fied New DeX replacing perfected old DeX
>Accessibility trashed (call recorders no longer working, HWstats overlays broken (e.g. GPUWatch), etc.)
>relentless cost-cutting/profitmaxxing crusade on component quality, manufacturing QC, SWdev, and SW testing, resulting in unrectifiable thermal throttling (despite muh ""sterling silver heatsink""), spontaneous loss of connectivity, self-igniting batteries, green lines, and other unsavory shit i don't see in my generation (and couldn't help but laugh at)
this also applies to other smartphone brands, more or less the same for the whole industry.

s20u5g is 5yo and going strong. 5G is expected to be terminally deprecated, i.e. 5G equipment dismantling/repurposing, around 2035-2040. i plan to keep it until the very, very end. maybe we'll have coin-sized 7G hotspots or some shit and i can keep it for longer, who knows, i rotate entry-levels for pozzed banking / utilities payments every 8y+ anyway (currently on a07 5g).

graphene coming to motorola (not out of the box) next year
not much info about it except at least one of their flagships will be compatible, hopefully it will perform decently enough to encourage other phone makers to follow suit?
>>
>>109090374
Nice. Supporting more devices beyond Pixel will be a good thing for Graphene.
I can't wait a year for a phone though. Can't use Graphene either because I need the Google Play DRM bullshit for app support.

I think when I get a new phone I'll probably flash Graphene on my old Pixel as a backup phone though. The way the UK government is going lately I'm not confident phones here will remain free and open for much longer so it'll be good to have a Plan B.
>>
>>109090470
>Graphene
But why does this exist? You're literally turning your smartphone into a brick, where 80% of it doesn't work due to the lack of google services, plus not a single banking app works.
>>
>>109090550
Turning it into a brick is the point. Google Play Services is basically a remote "make your phone shitter" service built in to every Android phone.

Graphene is essentially the nuclear option for if you want a phone free from government interference.

In the same way an ISP does not know "everything you do", and there are always methods of obfuscating your internet traffic and routing it elsewhere, similar methods exist on phones. Some even go as far to only use carriers for texting/calling, and use wifi for everything else. Some don't even have a carrier.

Most carriers will still know where you are physically and who you text/call, so it's a good idea to not enable cellular connectivity 24/7, and not use it for sensitive communication.

This is all very preferable to a Samsung phone, or apple phone, where there is no control nor auditability for the on-device software. If you wanted to stop Samsung from knowing what you're doing, you'd be hard pressed to have an actionable plan to do so.
>>
>>109091374
Grapehene doesn't stop you from being spied on, imagine thinking grapheneOS will stop spy agencies from doing what they do. I'm glad you like to fantasize about such a fake world, but I live in reality. Snowden already proved graphene is a meme.

I hear this very frequently, do you have any proof? I am very concerned about this, but as far as I'm aware most of the ones that have been discovered exist for physical access rather than anything remote. Please let me know if you find any hardware backdoors in a Pixel/Motorola phone that could be executed remotely, this is my #1 concern!

>>109091677
This pertains to Google's software, of which very little is used on grapheneOS. The grapheneOS project itself has little to no telemetry, most of Google's spying on GrapheneOS users happens when they first get the phone and connect to Google to unlock the bootloader. Beyond this, grapheneOS's version of android has been stripped of most spyware that would be included with the majority of android distributions. And of course, the project itself publishes source code so that it could be audited to not contain such spyware. Apple, on the other hand, has become an ad company and releases no source code for their phones. They are effectively not auditable at such an in-depth level.

Sup sp/g/oblins. What’s a good companion phone (secondary device) to an iPhone 17? My budget is maybe around $550 on the high end but I really want to get the highest value overall, and closer to $300 or less would be nice.

Use case: A second phone to put some old numbers on since I’m going through all of my old 2FA’s and changing them to my new number but I don’t want to be locked out of anything while I transition over. Shit is annoying but that’s life. Bonus points if it’s Apple since I can keep my old logins on it and my new logins on my new phone. If it’s Android I can probably benefit from edge cases where the Google Wallet NFC shit works and Apple Pay doesn’t, or maybe slight differences in available software and support. Between iOS and Android, which is better at juggling multiple numbers and spam calls, and phone call management in general? I think I do prefer an iPhone but I only see the iPhone 12 64gb for $280 at Best Buy which feels expensive for such an old device. They have 14’s for $400, and Pixel 10a for $500 which is close to the most I’m comfortable spending on this as a secondary device. After I’m done juggling phone numbers for 2FA it will basically be a backup phone for when I don’t have coverage on my main one or some other added benefit such as if my main phone breaks and I still need email access.

ChatGPT suggests:
Moto G Stylus 5g $200 new
Pixel 8a $265 refurb
Galaxy A35 5G $360

I just need to be able to buy it at Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart or Target basically

https://privsec.dev/posts/android/banking-applications-compatibility-with-grapheneos/
many banking apps are compatible with graphene
graphene doesn't turn your phone into a brick, with sandboxed google play you can do anything an android phone can do, you might miss on google pay but other than that graphene is a normal android experience
in fact graphene offers much more control on you phone than android can, so you're free to install all the google spyware if that's what you want
>>
>>109095095
if you dont need powerful, anything with an "a" after it is going to be best value. i'd pick a pixel 8/8a/8pro or newer.

heres the official RECOMMENDED list (which is seperate from the supported list)
https://grapheneos.org/faq#recommended-devices

keep in mind, using google play services will drain your battery more, and try to enable battery charge limiting very early on. for me, the 8a is enough.
>>
>>109095050
>no Google
android was developed by google, non-android linux is still not widely supported on most phones.
>no closed-source
replicant phones were the closest you could get, but even then the modem itself had proprietary firmware. plus, they only supported 3g and are now being phased out.
watch out for https://librephone.fsf.org/ as the FSF attempts to reverse engineer as much as they can.
every phone, even with custom roms, will still have firmware and driver blobs.
>no tracking
>no spyware
all OEM roms have some amount of tracking and spyware, some custom roms can solve parts of the issue, but some of it is from the carrier. imagine if your isp forced you to use the included router all day.
>no ads
most phones can have their ads removed.
