Wait, aren't HDDs supposed to be cheaper than SSDs?

yeah, this shit used to be 45 bucks

>>109123320
LLMs thrash too much for SSDs so they have switched to spinning rust instead

I wanted to buy a WD red drive but anything below 8TB is out of stock in my country and all drives are priced ridiculously
It's over
>>
>>109123412
The consumer side of the HDD market was something like only 10%, so disrupting that with more server demand was easier than most things unfortunately.
But hopefully they aren't going to be buying this many drives forever, right..

(Supposedly AI demand is affecting regular web/cloud storage and prices for that is going up because they can't afford drives as easily)

>LLMs thrash too much for SSDs
What kind of bullshit are you making up?
>>
>>109123441

I'm afraid that they simply stopped producing (and this time permanently) consumer grade drives such as WD Blue (WD10EZEX being the most produced one) along with external 2,5 usb drives, SSDs, SDs, flash drives, SATA format. Even shitty 1TB seagate externals and chinese QLC SSDs now cost 3 times as much or they're out of stock.

Data centers require 20TB+ helium drives with SCSI interface and to cut costs they'd cram many platters inside one drive casing than 1-2 platters inside the similar case.

>>109123412

Even 500GB drives are insanely expensive.

>1tb HDD
It's a retard tax at this point.
Buy 4tb+
>>
just pay for it man
it's the free market at work
don't be a whiny little bitch
>>
>>109123480
nonsense
external 2.5 HDDs are in-stock everywhere
sure they cost twice or whatever but they're 100% available for instant purchase
>>
>>109124483
I had five 1TB drives from an older build.
I threw them out years ago because they're not even useful for backups.
I think the smallest drive I still have and keep for backups is 3TB.
>>
>>109127160
>>109124483
backing stuff up across multiple drives is just best practice for reducing the risk of one of the drives crapping out for reason X or Y
I always use 2TB drives and I keep double backups
I will never lose my cold storage data ever
>>
>>109123320
HDDs are close to being Lost Technology. start visiting scrap yards and dumpster dive.

I'm stuck with a 2+1.5+1.5+1+1+1+1 setup and I absolutely hate it

OP makes this thread every other week, don't worry about it.

I'm stuck with a 2,1,1,1 as well but I have a 256/512 in my xeon shitbox and I hate it. At the same time I have 3 1tb ssds sitting around as backup for this shitty climate to clone to when one shits the bed
>>
>>109124483
4tb is twice what it used to be. I got lucky and got an external one for 60 bucks though. I need one more and I'll have peace of mind but I hate overpaying.

I sort of cope by moving shit that I appreciate having locally but could replace on the least reliable ones, then the healthier ones are reserved for backups. Could be worse, I lucked into the 1.5 TB ones, they're from a family member who used them for movies and replaced them with a single 4 TB. Also they're external and one of the PSUs broke, so I had to do this whole fuckery in picrel (not pictured here: 1TB SSD for boot, 1.5TB for local YT archive, 1TB external on its last legs I use for game backups)
>>
>>109129066
I create assets so I am fucked and i NEED lots of hdds to archive my shit and not lose old versions because it's very easy to make good progress but fuck up something I may need to copy and merge from a several versions old file. It it literal hell for me right now

bro, sam altman is advancing humanity here, elon is taking us to mars
what are doing? what makes you feel entitled to priority?

I also keep double backups.
I've hoarded 9TB in total so those 5 1TB drives would only cover half of that and require manually swapping every 8 hours or so because they're also slower than higher capacity drives.

Sometimes you just have to smash up drives and drop them in the bin.
>>
>>109129183
Altman is grifting the stock market, the real AI progress is quieter.
>>
>>109127143
SMR shit. All of them.

Only good for cold storage, pretty much useless for anything that needs to be available at a moment's notice.

that HDD started production 11 years ago, the product might just be scarce

here it is for 1002 SEK (102.75 USD / 90.43 EUR)

wasn't the Mars colony supposed to be up and running already?

>>109129127
Feel ya, I 3D model as a hobby, thankfully my work isn't that serious, so my OG+day before+the 22nd of every month general backup approach has been enough.
>>
>>109129914
It is pain but I'll manage
