I recently found one of these CD players my parents got from (I think) a couple decades back. It doesn't seem to work but I like how it looks, should I just get a new one or have CD players not improved enough in the past 20 years to make a difference in audio quality? Also bonus question: if I do get a new one, are there any that are good, cheap, and also look cool?

If you're encoding for target bitrate, then the file size is roughly the set Target Bitrate (in Kbps, for example), multiplied by amount of seconds in the video (which can be calculated by dividing the total amount of frames by the FPS, if you're also changing the FPS or something). libvpx and libvpx-vp9 often overshoot though, unfortunately

there's little difference between 6 and 6E, in a typical small home envinronment you should be able to hit 10GbE with either
there's a bigger difference between 5E and 6 than there is 6 and 6E, if you want to use 10GbE you'll at least want cat6, but if you can't justify 6E then 6 is fine

cat6e is just cat6 but with the plastic spline expressly included. The spline gives you the same theoretical 100m bandwidth as 6A but without the shield required by 6A. Hooking up shields correctly in residential is no small thing either.

It doesn't matter either way currently. Theoretically some future consumer Ethernet hardware may be able to leverage the extra bandwidth, especially over 50m+ runs. Same way high performance cat5 from the 90s negotiates higher data rates than it's supposed to now.
>>
>>109206125
Transmission doesn't implement BEP 42 DHT security so it wastes a lot of time relaying botnet control signals instead of torrent info. Sometimes it goes a day or so without connecting to a legit node.

rtorrent and Bigly are better qbt alternatives if you want good DHT.

If the fields aren't dependent on any other tables, or the fields aren't dependent on each other (high probability with that many fields), etc, then sure. Classic database normalization constraints - in the real world, you generally want your table to be 3NF normalized: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database_normalization#mwSg
You can probably split it into multiple tables, or maybe you can't, if after normalization they all make sense to be in that one table.

no, if you want a massive increase in performance buy a 1660 super or TI for $80 on ebay or facebook marketplace.
unfortunately it has a 8pin power connector, but that's fine if you have a 300+ watt PSU (check that the 12v rail is rated 300 watts, some PSU's lie and put 100 watts to the 5v/3v/-12v rail), you don't need a 8pin connector.
You can buy a cheap 2x molex to pcie 8-pin adapter on aliexpress or just walk into a local repair store that hoards old parts and ask for a free adapter (they WANT to get rid of it, they will not charge for it), old GPU's would be packaged with this adapter.
I assume you don't have a 6-pin pcie power adapter, but a 6pin power could also work, IF all 6 pins have wires (6pin has the same max wattage rating as 8pins, but 6pin could have a lower wattage), you could try what I did in the picture with a 1660 TI (just connect black ground wire to the 2 sense pins, using a spare useless molex adapter I had, the wire does not pass any power).
Or replace the PSU ($20 PSU's that are rated 350w on facebook marketplace), but maybe you can't replace it because you got one of those weird proprietary Mobo PSU connectors / proprietary PSU dimensions that old prebuilts have.
>>
>>109205771
>>109206883
*But if you really want it to be powered purely by the mobo, and it needs to be new, you could get a 3050 6gb, but it is not cheap.
It's not faster than the 1660s/ti, it just matches, and note the 8gb version has a 8pin connector, and it's 20% stronger.
On the bright side it has DLSS, but normal DLSS will give you more a big FPS boost compared to native, the 3050 6gb does not have enough power more FPS, so if you have a 1440p monitor, I think it's worth it since you are going to upscale at the same internal resolution as a 1080p display, but at 1080p I think DLSS is very sad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILN9Cofppfo
Notice that DLSS 4 has a higher FPS, but it creates a smearing effect in some games such as the leaves in expedition 33, and DLSS 4.5 fixes that smearing. Also this is a review of the 8gb GPU, so just round the fps down by 15-20%.
>>
>>109206883
>>109207052
The rx560 not having extra power pins was not a deliberate choice, I bought it used and didn't initially realise it

I a 500w psu which should be capable enough to power something heftier

I was already kinda afraid of it tho, it's too old and too underpowered to bother with I guess

Used gpu prices are ass atm so I'm undecided on if I want a new gpu (for like 2 or 3 games I care about)
>>
>>109207169
>Used gpu prices are ass atm so I'm undecided on if I want a new gpu (for like 2 or 3 games I care about)
The 1660 super / ti is good value, the rx 560 is just ewaste, because IGPU's are just stronger (such as the steam deck, or ryzen mini PC's with a 780m igpu).
A 5060 ti 8gb is absolutely going to last 4x longer than a 1660 ti/super. Because it has more than 3x the FPS in the best case scenarios AND there are enough AI cores to actually use DLSS correctly to increase FPS by 20% or more.
But if you have a weak cpu, you might not notice a huge upgrade over the 1660s/ti, it could be less than 2x improvement in FPS (but only if you don't enable DLSS!).
I forgot to mention, the 1660s/ti supports FSR 3 and FSR 4 int8 through optiscaler. But I think FPS gains are not good enough (maybe better for 1440p or very very low internal resolution).
My metric for bang per buck is to use a good comparison benchmark (same reviewer + same hardware + same settings, ideally all the GPU's in the same graph for a specific game), look at the game you care about, look at the FPS, then divide the cost of the GPU with the FPS, that's the cost per frame.
So if a used 1660 s/ti is $80, and a 5060 TI 8gb is $400.
the 1660 ti gets 40 fps on cyberpunk (ultra settings, 9800x3d), and the 5060 ti gets 120fps.
That means the 1660 TI has a cost per frame of $2
And the 5060 TI 8gb has a cost per frame of $3.3
But when you reduce the graphics settings, the 1660 TI can reach 80fps, you can't really go far above 120fps with a 5060 TI because the CPU is not fast enough so maybe just 144fps, which means the 1660 TI/super has a much better looking cost per frame of $1~.
And the benchmark is using a 9800x3d, some CPU's like 4 core-8threads (like a 12100f/ryzen 5500), can only reach 90fps with a 5090.
>>
>>109207401
>(but only if you don't enable DLSS!).
OH DLSS does not fix the CPU bottleneck, I think I just completely forgot what I was typing there.
>>
>>109207401
>used $400 gpu
Just buy a new RX 9060 XT at that point. Have 16GB of VRAM. Buying a GPU with <12GB for UE5 slop is positively retarded.
>>
>>109207656
the $400 5060 TI is new, I rounding the price up $20.
It is true that if you have a weak CPU, you are more likely to crank up the graphics settings to ultra, which could cause your VRAM to exceed the 8gb limit and leading to a visually lower quality experience, in some games running with higher quality textures using the same FPS as low quality textures (monster hunter wilds).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0_4aCiORzE
For $420 anon could get a 9060 XT 16gb, or $500 5060 TI 16gb.
A 5070 might work fine on a 500 watt PSU (it depends on the brand quality, and how power hungry the CPU is, or if anon uses HDD's).
Is 16gb worth it? nah. Mohun wilds is a special game that has a very unique preference to 16gb, and I wonder if the 9800x3d skews the benchmark away from reality.
For every other game, you need to crank the settings to ultra, and by the time the game runs out of vram, the fps on the 5060 (and 9060) drops to below 60fps, which I consider unacceptable for a $420+ GPU. Unless you intend on playing in a 30fps cinematic experience, or you want AI, just stick to 8gb, or get a 5070 or a new PSU with a 9070 xt.

The core of the problem is that the settings that causes vram utilization to increase typically causes the FPS to also drop.
And my personal critisim of the 5060 TI and 9060 XT is that it's a 128bit bus, so you get more vram, but you are not getting the same deal as a 16gb gpu with a 256bit bus.

Doesn't matter. Consoles set the memory size requirement. Everything made for PS5 assumes you have about 12GB of VRAM, and PS6 will bump that up to about 16-20. Satisfy hard requirements before marketing bullshit.

we will see if you are correct when we see the FPS of the 5060 TI and 9060 playing a ps6 port, and comparing the 8gb vs 16gb experience.

why don't you show benchmarks to prove your point, since we have seen this happen 2 generations ago?
Oh wait... selling a GPU with 2x the vram with the exact same core + bus width as a gaming GPU only started with the 4060 TI 16gb... (yes I know that there are datacenter GPU's with more vram, the RTX 6000 Ada is a 3090 with doubled ram, and the 2080 TI is shared with a 48gb Quadro card).
I agree that 12gb of vram is better, on a 5070, because it's a better GPU, but the 16gb variant of the 5060 TI/9060 is in my opinion a confusing GPU, if you have 8gb or 16gb, both cards will run gta 6 at the same FPS.
So, I think people think 16gb is some sort of future proofing, when in reality you need to drop down to 40fps to actually utilize more than 8gb in most games, but the easy fix is to just lower the settings / use AI upscaling.
So if you are willing to drop $70-100 more for an extra 8gb, go ahead, maybe you want to use AI (16gb isn't enough for most cool things...).
But a 5070 or 9070 is only another $100 above, for real FPS gains.
Yep, that's how they get you with the price ladder. But that's only if you care about future proofing, that's why I said buy a $400 5060 TI 8gb, a 5070 is 50% more expensive and 50% faster, so what? you get what you paid for. Why go in the middle for no gains?

not reading all that to tell you that vram has been a major factor in purchasing decisions for many generations, as anon had said, and that you lack the experience in this exact scenario, as anon had said, wherein you should do your own research on the subject, as anon has said, such that you can feel confident in YOUR purchase decisions.

Has anyone here tried using Blu-Ray discs or DVDs for archving data? What company makes discs that aren't total shit and what should I use to store the burned discs? I'd prefer to use something more compact than one case per disc.
Should I buy one of those special markers for writing on my discs?
If I choose to store burned discs in a spindle, would having any writing on a disc cause problems for the disc above it?
>>
>>109205771
i've done this before, also the no-external-power version of the rx560. i pushed up the power limit a bit and did some undervolting, too
>>
>>109210244
spindles are fine. i've never had any issues just using sharpies to write on discs. just make sure the ink is completely dry before storing them (not usually something you need to actually wait for since by the time you're ready to put a new disc in the spindle the last one will have long since dried)

>>
>>109210244
DVDs and CDs are not ideal. Fine for moderate-term (like 1-3 years) as long as you store them properly.
BD-R is actually surprisingly decent. Better than HDDs, but lower data density. Do not use anything except the write-once (-R) version of disks. The others like -RW are far worse for archiving data.
BD-R MDISCs are far superior but are more expensive. Make sure your burner supports BD MDISC burning.

>What company makes discs that aren't total shit and what should I use to store the burned discs?
The only choice is Verbatim. Don't buy random chinkshit for data storage. Just use a hard-case wallet and put it somewhere out of the heat and humidity. You can vacuum seal the discs first in a sandwich bag if you want to maximise life span.

>>
>>109211237
>Did it actually make a difference? I don't think I want to undervolt something weak already tbf
it did. i did it a while ago so i don't have any numbers for you. undervolting leaves more headroom for overclocking at the same power draw.
>>
>>109211265
>undervolting leaves more headroom for overclocking at the same power draw.
Makes sense, looks like I'll have to look into it more otherwise it will cause a brownout
>>
>>109211279
you'll need to set aside some time to test it, which you'll have to for overclocking as well. just keep in mind that the closer you get to the limits for your card, the harder it can be to tell if it's stable or not. that is to say, if it's way too much, it might crash immediately running a stress test like furmark, but if it's really close, furmark might run for a while before crashing. so you end up thinking you found the limit, then a while down the line reducing it just a little since you can't rely on something that close to the line.

overvolting is also a thing, if you want to get the most performance regardless of power usage, but since you have a power-limited card, you will want undervolting to give you that headroom instead.

Is it ethical, morally, technically correct if I took a github repo of a program I really like but has been broken for at least 5 years, and the las commit was 2 years ago and didn't fix anything, and modified with Claude to make it run and add some features I wanted? Last time I compiled it, it wouldn't even open.

I really like the program but I feel like using AI offends certain people on the interweb. Was I wrong or not?

I once had something similar happen where my PC would work fine for a few hours, then start crashing so much that it wouldn't even boot properly, but be mysteriously okay again after leaving it off for an hour or so.
Turned out there was a tiny drop of dried soda on the mobo on the traces between the CPU and the chipset, which slowly developed a charge until it started affecting the signals passing underneath it.

a short wouldn’t be sticky keys, it would just fail to work. shorts happen from minerals in suspension in the water/beverage. if no minerals were left behind after the water is gone and you didn’t have it running with all that liquid on it it’s probably fine. Considering it was partially alcohol means it will evaporate faster.
