HAPPENING: OpenAI has forked Git. Rust rewrite is imminent.https://github.com/openai/git
OHNONONONONNor something
>(((version control)))
It's no joke. They're serious about hijacking it.
>>109255222They're just fed up with the snailcat pace of development and need their fixes in.
>open source project gets forked, news at 11Shocking
Linus never gave much of a shit about git anyway, he has said as much
>>109255203gitoxide already exists. and the developer behind it joined the jj team along time ago.jj has been all the rage for a while now. it's just /g/eets like you haven't heard of it yet.
>>109255203Do Xittershitters get off on hAbBeninGs like this? Oh wait>bluecheckElonbux thing
>>109255556meant for>>109255222
>>109255203What does this have to do with Linus? What are you implying?
>>109255203Polymarket-ass post
>>109255203doesn't linus like rust?
>>109255203> we have this super intelligent tool that can basically build anything on earth and is each equivalent to a phd grad what should be do with it?> i know lets build git, a c compiler, a browser, more js toolswhat a waste of resource that just shows how much of a meme AI is.
I understand wanting comparability and all that but git is fucking horrid as a result. Every day I am shocked at the reminder that this is the industry standard tool. All it does is cause data lose via bugs and waste time with workflow conventions which are always made more difficult because there's 80 different ways to accomplish the same thing because they can not break script compatibility. Fuckin weak shit man. It's legitimately easier to just share a directory and do semantic versioning. Even in teams.I'd rather they write a replacement than a rewrite of the same tool.
>>109255875so do it, dumb dumb
>>109255878If you give me the same resources they have, I will. Give me significantly less resources and I will.
>>109255884you will get nothing and you will be happy
>>109255891Incorrect.
>>109255875You do realize that there already existed an "industry standard" before git and that you can still use that? After you spent a week with svn, you will kiss the ground git developers walk on.
>>109255884>the same resources they havegit was the result of Linus Torvalds being bored. You do already have the same resources.
>>109255875What bugs? Genuine question.
>>109255916shut the fuck up, goy
>>109255927?
>>109255905I'm fully aware. I've been doing development since before git existed, which you can probably intuit from my stance. CVS and SVN are no better but that's not an argument in favor of git. `rm -rf` isn't a good solution either but `rm` did exist before git.>>109255911If it's not obvious from my post, Linus also didn't produce a suitable solution. Your comparison is a joke at best.>>109255916I've had repo corruption many times when dealing with a combination of bare repos and worktrees and god knows what else combined from team members using whatever new features git chooses to add.I understand version control systems are not a backup, but I honestly think it's a bit ridiculous having to keep meticulous backups of the repo state itself in addition to the code. I may as well just do that without git.Plan 9 had the right idea with their timestamp system.
>>109255933you are full of shit
>>109255947You're replying directly to the author. If you thought that would convince me, it didn't.
>>109255949>repo corruption because of bugs in git>new features git chooses to add>that your team members usemaybe just quit your job and become a hobo in a tent city and take fentanyl
>>109255203Use case for a slop coded git clone?
>>109255203So? It's about time you completely abandon github and other platforms like that and self host all your code you want private.Microslop was compromised recently, everything on Github is basically public now.Without this cloud shit, there is no need for you to stick to latest version of whatever srouce control software that is mainstream. You just use any version of git or any other software you want. And only migrate things to something else if you have to collaborate with someone.Nobody serious would use microslop compromised cloud services in the future, so git would not be relevant, unless you do linux kernel dev.Everything you can see on public srouce control platforms is AI slop nowadays, so it makes no sense to peak and see what commits AI has generated, it's trash to aurafarm stats. Done by some random unemployed pakistani wannabe js ninja. Bullshit like that is everywhere now.
>>109255964I don't understand what you're frustrated with or what you're even trying to say.You want me to become a hobo because git has issues? Are you just responding to me for attention or are you trying to talk about the topic. I'm fine with either I just want to know before we continue.
>>109255875sounds like a skill issue and this is more your speedhttps://epicgames.github.io/lore
>>109255977I wonder if you realize the irony in your post. You know who Epic Games is?You think their developers have a skill issue? You think that's the case with Meta et al too when they decide to come up with sappling, etc.It honestly boggles my mind that people actually defend git. As if it's a personal attack. The entire industry has complained about it forever. And so has Linus himself. I legitimately don't know who the git defense force is. These people don't exist in the real world, only here.
>>109255203based, about time we get a proper version of it
>>109255973Nigger, you are either lying or the most incompetent person i have ever seen.git bugs caused corruption of your repository, but when asked which ones, you can't answer. You talk about ominous new features that git added that caused you issues, but don't have an example. You talked about needing backups, even thought that the very purpose of git is to be decentralized and to just push to upstream. git push is your backup.Tell me why you should have a job? How do you justify your position? Why shouldn't you be in a tent city injecting fentanyl into yourself right now?
>>109255989>It honestly boggles my mind that people actually defend gitnobody here defends git, anons just see you lying and don't like being lied to
>>109255933> I've had repo corruption many times when dealing with a combination of bare repos and worktreesHardware issue.
>>109255997>git bugs caused corruption of your repository, but when asked which ones, you can't answer.I listed the most recent case I personally experienced. If you want to see more, git is on revision 2.55.0.You can view git's own commit history and their changelog to see every possible bug.I'm not sure which one specifically you were expecting me to talk about.>you are lyingWhat specifically do you think I'm lying about? My age?>You talked about needing backups, even thought that the very purpose of git is to be decentralized and to just push to upstream. git push is your backup.lmfao next you'll say RAID is a backup strategy.>Tell me why you should have a job? I don't know you and you seem very hostile. Why do you want to have this subjective conversation with me? If I'm being honest you're not fun to talk to so I want to minimize our interactions, not extend them. You're talking like a schizo about some drugland fantasy out of nowhere. Some fetish I presume.>>109256024>hardwareI have no clue how you jumped to such a conclusion. There were issues with git, the patches were submitted by maintainers from Microsoft, a release was issued shortly after a previous one. That would be a wild coincidence, especially across that many people.
>>109255203man who vares. theres like a 1000 vscs out there. honestly fuck modern world its shit and feces infested shithole. I can wait for a solar flare to wipe this all out. just take ur bike(should not connect to interwebz) and drive out during an evening.
>>109256046link to the bug or the incompatible feature that caused corruption of your repository and all upstream repositories as well, requiring from you to get a backup
If your software is stable and moves slow, your repository can be a .tar.gz file and you can take contributions per email in patch form, as god intended.
>>109256054I'm not even going to launch slack to find out which month this was let alone bughunt for you.Why are you asking? If you experienced the same thing and are looking for a way to fix it, I have bad news for you. Restore from a backup.
>>109256076i think a tent city would be the correct career path for you
>>109256083I don't understand what you're on about. When I said "author" I meant of the post, not git. I'm not responsible for making the bug if that's what you think. You're not making much sense, coming across like a drunk. I guess that explains the projection.
>>109255203>LLMs are so great bro>Instead of continuing the software it will rewrite for better readability and bug awareness languageAm I supposed to get exited about that? Lmao what a pathetic industry.Every news is so fake now.
>>109255997>git push is your backupoof, come back in a couple years when you learn something kid
>>109255203Cool, now we can have vibecoded version of git. Hopefully most jeets migrate there
>>109255552Nobody except hn shills cares about jj
>>109256409everything is vibecoded nowit's just cope to think something isn'tI don't really give a shit anymore at work either, they don't care so I don't either
>>109255203You're an imbecile who has no idea what he's talking about.
>>109255203torvcuck will probably just take it and applaud them for their effort
>>109255863>claim to have powerful development tool that will enable unforetold innovation>use it to build things already in its training setsay it ain't so
>>109255875Git only exists and is used by everyone because it's free. If you watch the old Google talk Linus gave trying to market Git for Google to use internally, he mentioned how there were some good proprietary version control systems that he preferred to use when he still had a day job but couldn't use for the Linux kernel project because those tools were paid.Git was never supposed to be better or even as good as those proprietary solutions. It just needed to be better than any of the free alternatives.
>>109256066I'm confused about the constant snailcat luddite spam. They make luddites sound like the reasonable point of view.Is it because they are AI generated or because they are made by (((them)))?
>>109256445>they talk about it on orange r*dditsorry. i'm neither a jeet nor a webshit. so i wouldn't know.
>>109255203
The Git project is already beginning to introduce Rust.Linus loves Rust, his daughter is a hardcore feminist.I'm sure he'll applaud this like a seal and tell the community that it's a good thing.
>using gitshiggy diggy
>>109255203What's even needed to develop for git? It was production-ready for, what, 20 years?
>OMG>HAPPENING>FAPPENING>SLOPPENING>IT'S OVER><literally nothing happened>
>>109255203RustGit backdoors go brrrrrrrr
>>109257512No but you don't understand XIR we need to IMPROVE all of the software ALL THE TIME and rewriting things in RUST means we can add cool COLORS and other AUTISTIC SHIT because... just BECAUSE okay?
>>109257714Hyuck! $420.69 Elonbux have been deposited in your account. Thanks for using X The Everything App and remember to shill Polymarket!
>Create a new version of jeethub>Block access to all other AIs from training on it >Label your own AI’s code so it doesn’t contaminate your own training set >Lure all good human programmers onto it for unique training dataIt’s happening isn’t it? The training data wars have begun?
>>109255203We don't need a git Rust rewrite, we need a totally new git. git is such a mediocre poorly engineered piece of software.
>>109255203How utterly stupid, contemptible and despicable.
>>109258090we already have it but no one uses it
>>109255203>Github allows major AIHalf the userbase leaves>Microsoft acquires git.More than half leave.>OpenAI wants to train AI on OpenSource, so it makes it's ownWho is left to leave both bullshit projects?
>>109255933redpill me on the Plan 9 method
