I'm not gonna pay 300 fuckin dollars compared to $85 for 60% more performance, yoy get to a point where the T480 is so much money for something that is a secondary computer for me, that as well get something new, modern Ryzen laptop wipes the fuckin floor with 14nm shit and has newer technologies, cause keep in mind baby and 8th Gen imtl are the same tech, nothing has changed except tyzrn coming out and making them add cores which could've been there the whole time, also the money saved is gonna buy me 32gb of ram and a 1tb M.2, which if T480 prices come to earth for such an old ass computer, will work in that machine too.
>>109332072>that as well get something new,That you may as well get something much newer*

There's nothing le based about a T480; Libreboot is a meme, and so is non-soldered RAM (for the majority of use-cases, especially so on a laptop). >>109337139She will be enough, I was just using a faggy MacBook air and that ultrabook dual core was more than enough for what I wanted, the only problem is yoy couldn't have more than 8GB of ram, its soldered, the ssd connector is a proprietary thing, and if you get a minor failure, you pretty much have to throw it away, the T470 is gonna be a beast when I put 32GB in, im not paying triple the price for an 8 year old computer compared to a 9 year old computer
>>109339225Can confirm you'll be fine. I bought a T480 with 8350U a few years ago and still don't need all of its performance despite my tab hoarding disease. I have it underclocked to be about as fast as a 7300U when on battery for that fanless Celeron netbook feeling.
>>109339520Based, stuff uses so much RAM these days, that it's become the main spec to care about when looking at computers, cause my i7 8700 isn't doing shit right now, but I have 12GB of RAM being used due to Chrome tabs, and my Windows 7 VM in the background using, which is a common scenario that almost maxes out a common 16GB RAM laptop, and a lot of laptops don't even come with 16GB of RAM which makes them unusable.

What's the best laptop if I want good battery life and for it to be decent at gaming? I'd prefer a thinkpad, but I'm open to other brands.
Anon who wants to get a ProBook here again. Found a more enticing deal on 450 G1 with dGPU, that being Radeon HD8750M with 1GB GDDR5 VRAM. Is it worth getting or maybe I should just look for newer generation laptops with Intel HD Graphics 520?
>>109349942You should get a 14nm laptop from 2016 onward Anon, the Intel HD graphics are decent for an integrated thing and they are reliable and use less energy, also the entire platform while dated at this point are better than what was available in 2013, I personally don't even like dedicated GPUs in laptops because the failure rate is higher and it uses more energy and makes more heat, also the 14nm laptops (bar T480) have fallen in price so hard, we're talking less than $100 for a T470 thinkpad with 8GB of RAM (upgradable to 32) an M.2 SSD 256GB in it, stuff 2013 laptops didn't have, so unless you absolutely want a socketed CPU, dvd drive from the era, get a 2016 skylake laptop onward.
>>109327167>15w beastgood luck with that anon
>>109352571She will be Anon, some of these newer laptops are so faggy they go into single channel mode due to soldered slot if you go over 8 or 16GB of RAM, and it's still 14nm chip with turbo at the end of the day, my 35w Ivy Bridge Toshiba is hitting 3.4GHz on a 2.9. even my Broadwell Macbook air that's being sold was hitting 2.9GHz when the base clock is 1.8GHz, (100C lel), but the Air is a faggy air, the Toshiba doesn't have a keyboard because consoomer laptops break and it's a 35W chip, the T470 is gonna have it all, business laptop like my Latitude, U class chip like the Air, working keyboard, working webcam in Linux unlike the Air's proprietary shit, doesn't get silly hot etc.I'm pissed because she's here but I'm at work.
>>109352731>single channel mode due to soldered slot if you go over 8 or 16GB of RAMat that point 8 or 16GB is the real max for that platformT470 has solid linux support though so you can't go wrong with that
>>109352731>the Toshiba doesn't have a keyboard because consoomer laptops breakhave you tried blacklisting the toshiba driver to see if that fixes it?
>>109353195It was the keyboard, they're chronically bad on the C55-A model, some of the keys will stop working, I swapped it with a new one from eBay and it was defective on random ass other keys as well, so I just removed the keyboard, cut out a black foam piece, and taped it over to make it look only a little ghetto, otherwise that's an amazing little laptop too with the i5 3380 and 16GB of DDR3 in it, despite it's slow ass 32 mbps wifi card.
>>109349423What games do you want to play? Anything older will be easier to run than a web browser now, but even CS2 needs a pretty beefy system that will neglect your battery life. Aim for some sort of 11th gen Intel business laptop.

Buying a modern-ish thinkpad for work, I've got it shortlisted to either a P16s with>16" display, OLED, 3840x2400 pixels, 16:10 format, 100% DCI-P3, DolbyVision, up to 400nits, anti-reflectionor a P14s with>14.5" 3K IPS display, 3072x1920 pixels, up to 430nits, 16:10 format, 100% DCI-P3, frostedAll the other specs are the same and the price is almost identical.I'm still deciding if I want 14'' or 16'' - I'm somewhat leaning towards 14''. But does anybody know how I can find out which display is better inherently? I know OLED is well regarded but 400nits max brightness is pretty mediocre for an OLED I think. I've also heard reviews that OLEDs can suck more power (at higher brightness) and thus are worse for battery life.
Mmm... buziness labtobs
>>109360555>does anybody know how I can find out which display is better inherently?Display quality is subjective because your eyes are, but brightness, contrast and color deviation are more important to subjective image quality than pixel density or display tech (IPS/OLED).300 nits is the minimum.400 nits is good enough in any home or office environment.500 nits is better for outdoor use in bright sunlight.Higher contrast is always better.Matte looks better than glossy in most real world environments.Good sRGB coverage and low color deviation are more important than higher color space coverage like Adobe RGB or DCI-P3/Display P3 unless you're a professional graphic designer.120 hz and low response times only matter if you're a gamer, and they eat more battery.PPI is more important than raw pixels. The ideal at average viewing distances with good eyesight is somewhere around 150 PPI. A 14" 1200p screen will look better than a 16" 1200p screen.Non-integer scaling methods are SHIT.
>>109361497>PPI is more important than raw pixelsThis, I don't even how normies go to the store and buy 27 inch 1080p screens without hurting their eyes, my 24 inch 1200p screen has fuckhuge pixels in my opinion compared to a 14 inch chinkpad with the lovely 1920x1200 screen

>>109370613We really can't stop winning for the price of the computers themselves, my T470 was about as worthless as one could be for a decked out 256GB NVME 1080P screen because the batteries are totally shot, which doesn't matter to me.

Have any of you ever bricked a thinkpad flashing coreboot/libreboot? The process is pretty straightforward, especially with libreboot; the more difficult part is when you start messing with payloads' configs, for example.

I don't think there's a meaningful difference in wattage, you just get to sit in the boost clock more because the cooling is slightly stronger. The difference is minimal though, just pick based on whether you want an ever so slightly thinner aluminium chassis or an ever so slightly thicker plastic chassis with an ethernet port.
God I love when chinkpads have pretty little feet, that's how you know you got a nice one that sat there looking pretty when even the sticker on the bottom is there and it's not scratched off after all these years.

>>109378225It's because I store so much crap in memory like tabs and VM, that my CPU is often just chilling while using a bunch of memory, which makes RAM more important to me than any specification, I wanted a machine that could have just as much shit open as my desktop but portable, well as portable as you can be with a T470 with completely shot batteries but good enough to be thrown in a bag with it's little wireless mouse and 45w charger (love how tiny it is) and go do what I need to do when away from home.

Redpill me on L and E series, I don't see them mentioned in OP. Are they really that bad?
>>109381405My Dad had a number of E series and one small L series. All of them held up well, besides the battery. But no freezing, crashing or anything like that. The keyboard felt about the same as my P50 at the time, but your milage may vary obv.In my understanding E and L are just not as well built as T/P/X series and offer less "cutting edge" specs: Not as optimized as an T series, no dGPU like the P series and not as small/light as an X series.

>>109382850If I open two terminal panes side by side will I still be able to read? Is the image quality good on a T480 or similar?
>>109382904Yes, its a very sharp screen, I thought 900p on a 14 inch was crisp back in the day, but this is on another level of crisp, the pixels dont look disgustingly lsrge when you take a pic of the screen up close, and you can still scale things up.

I want to learn how to do basic Laptopt/Computer repair and diagnoses. So far I've only salvaged parts from non-functioning thinkpads into other slightly more functional ones to some success. So far all I've learned has been from searching and reading whatever is on the forum for my extremely specific question. Sometimes it works but many times it doesnt. What resources/apps exist to help me understand more of my laptop? For example why does my T440p goes faster with a specific HDD than with another one? What exists that could help me read the "health" of an HDD?I tried adding a 4gb ddr4 ram stick to my daily T490 but it's completely invisible even in the bios, as if it wasn't placed at all, I gave up on that as wellAlso, I read that some laptops can only be upgraded to a specific resolution. How or why? I just feel like I want to learn more but don't know what i need to learn or how, and am simply a cumbersome retard

So my 2015 zenbook its showing its age, i want something to install linux on and code some video games on the go on godot. If i'm reading correctly if i want something that will last, is repairable, cheap and actually has some 2020 perf i should be aiming for T14g1 right? How long does it last on battery? >>109397540they could at least have the courtesy to include a minimal install option, I don't want to waste an hour removing bloat I don't need, so into the trash it goes
Thoughts on touch vs non-touch displays?I'm looking for a (relatively) new model, but all the ones I've seen either have a low resolution display, have a touchscreen display, have 8GB of total RAM, or are unreasonably priced as a consequence of the RAM shortage--most of the newer models have soldered RAM ffs; it's not like you can reuse the modules elsewhere. A lot of them are priced high, while having a wasted battery--if any--and no NVME. The best you can hope to come across is a 256GB NVME.I might just go with a T480s for a guaranteed high-quality display, and hope I can get one with 8GB soldered RAM so I can upgrade it to at least 16GB total later on.
>>109399391My T480 had touch when I bought it. Feels like a gimmick I rarely use, because lower half of laptop make upper half awkward to use.>>109392820That works, but feels like a letdown from what I had with Dell Latitude E6400.

I may try to upgrade it to an AMD 5 T14, how big of an upgrade would it be? should i get a different model? running linux, if it matters much
>>109401171I don't think upgrading will help because all cpus with turbo want to overclock to the moon when doing light stuff to speed it up, try disabling the intel turbo p state using the terminal, once that's not being used you will be operating within the 15w or whatever your cpu is.

Man Windows 11 fucking sucks. I use a T490 for some work stuff on a remote server that requires the bullshit security scan, but this piece of shit with an SSD and 16gb RAM gets sometimes even slower than my T440s shitbox with an HDD and 8gb RAM. I'm not switching to Linux because 1. I know nothing at all about it and don't have the time to learn for now 2. Win10 just works for me nowBut I do have entertained the idea of adding a m.2 ssd to the t440s extra slot and dual boot with some distribution I'm surprised at how an older model handles itself better just because of the OS, because spec wise it should be in the dirt
>>109410827Honestly Anon you should stick with Windows 10 as long as it does what you need, because the performance is better on Windows 10 than 11, it's like they put al the bloat in it or something, cause my old dual core T470 was zooming on Windows 10 before I put Linux on it, I'm considering setting up a dual boot of 10 myself and using that for the Sony Vegas and Photoshop with no wifi connected, instead of using 7 in a VM because the performance is that decent.

>>109410752>What's currently the best gaming laptop money can buy? While still being fairly portable (14 inches) and having a fairly good battery life? This might seem kind of unintuitive, but the best gaming laptops that give the most bang for your bucks are actually the low end ones. They create far less heat and noise, and cost the same as their respective desktop versions. The more expensive ones have severely reduced performance compared to desktop versions while costing the same. You can get refurbished/outlet rx6500m/rtx 3050 gaming laptops for around $400, usually with only 8 gb ram and 256 gb ssd but they're usually easy to replace. Though sometimes you find bargains, I bought several refurbished Lenovo LOQ gaming laptops with rtx3050s and 24 gb of ram for $400 each last year. I guess they had too many of them in stock or something. Gave two two my nephew and niece, two to my friend's kids, and I still have a couple of them left. And in total they cost pretty much the same as a high end gaming laptop.
>>109410487>this is a based fuckin laptop for everyday usage.Yeah. All the criticism the TP25 got was valid, but with where I'm at in life I value being able to have all the same keys and layout when I have it on a USB-C dock or when I've got it around the house. I could get by with my X230 w/ 220 keyboard, but I just want to play FHD videos without resizing so I gave that to my parents and I didn't want the W530's bulk. >>109417437>500-800 charge cyclesThat's a generous estimate for li-ion actually. But only if they mean full 0-100-0 cycle.ThinkPads should all have bios or thinkvantage settings to limit max charge and significantly prolong battery decay.
What’s something small and lightweight that i can take with me easily. Currently my everyday carry is a 2015 macbook air i got gifted when a friend upgraded. It fits really nicely in my small bag that i carry everywhere. Is there a machine that has a bit more beef or battery life than my current machine at that size? Thank you for helping.
>>109417501X1 Carbon gen6 has coffee lake chips, its a computer with soldered ram like an air but its stronger and thin.
>>109417673Thank you bunches, I’ll check it out
So I just got an old laptop from the place I work, for free. T14s gen 3. pretty neat
>>109418063it's not even that old, only four yearsnice
>>109418406It's a weird situation to be honest. All the thinkpads are being replaced by nice sleek silver hp machines. Old machines get sold on to some third party. But the IT guy in charge of managing it has been laid off. Most the it stuff has been out sourced to India. He was just giving stuff away.
>>109418529>machines get sold on to some third partyIts tragic, my mom's work T480s got traded for a T14 Gen 5 and the IT guy acted like it was the oldest notherfucker ever, sure its outclassed by new stuff but it wasn't unusable, it had a single sodimm slot for a goofy 24GB of RAM, but it still was fine, I hope some autist gets ahold of it down the line because my mom had it docked with dual 1440p chinkvision 165hz screens and never touched the keyboard or track pad, looked fuckin mint when I rubbed it down with a little isopropyl.
>>109418529My workplace buys these thinkpads, half of the staff have refurbished thinkpads. Of course I ended up with pretty much the only HP in the building.
>>109418529>Old machines get sold on to some third party.I've ordered a couple of these from Denmark now, T14 gen 2. They've been pretty aggressive with the prices this week, probably to sell to students. You also get 2 years warranty.
i checked local marketplace. t14 gen2s are 1.5-2x price of t480s. going to buy i5 8350U t480
>>1094200311.5x is very fair imoPosted from my 8350U T480
how possible is it to upgrade the motherboard on a x220? I found one for cheap but don't want to use it's slow processor. I thought of buying a more recent laptop motherboard on ebay (at least one with DDR4 ram support) and replace it with that.
>>109420329I think it can only fit an ivy bridge 230 board in there
>>109420031The ones I bought were 1.6x the price, but I think that's totally fair considering they're three years newer. And they had the i5 11th generation cpus which pretty much were the last usable intel cpus before the estrogen cores.
>>109420329Well you need to connect the keyboard, trackpoint, trackpad and x220 batteries. Also make the cooling system and ports work, possibly cut away some structural keyboard supports to make the mobo fit...For the panel it's probably easier to just use any newer, eDP compatible panel. It's really better to just start with a new mobo design.
Libreboot's new site layout looks super gay. Wonder if they at least made it more readable. So much for 6-month release schedule.
Why didnt lelnovo stop at this? Clearly removing a layer of keys and fucking up the layout isnt a necessary compromise to make the laptop thinner like soldershit, they could done the old layout but chiclet and everyone would've been fine, because chiclet does feel and look better, same with deleting the dvd drive which drastically made it thinner and gave space for more batt and not having a cpu socket sticking up off the board or even ram slots on the carbon made it stupid thin, but clearly messing with the keyboard doesn't give us anything because it can fit on a 25th retro meme, a 2017 ultrabook
>>109420467>>109421114I was looking at x230 motherboards with i7 cpu's on ebay and they're all over $150 so that's not worth it. I think I'll just upgrade the screen and storage.
>>109325724Have a skhynix 2tb 3gen ssd, want to install void linux using limine as a bootloader for other installs + snapshots. What do you recc?
Which of the T14 thinkpads do you prefer between T2 and T3? They're pretty much the same price. There's only intel ones with upgradable ram and ssds where I live. I'm probably going to buy the T3 since it's newer although I'm not particularly fond of the 12th generation intel cpus. Which I would guess is the reason they're the same price.
>>109424019I mean of course gen 2 and 3, not T2 and T3. I should probably go to bed.
Would the thinkpad T14 gen 2 ryzen 5650U be worth it for ~$100 more than an L14 with the same specs but more storage?Anyone here had an L14? How is the full plastic feel compared to the magnesium?
>>109424449>poozennone, go with intel
>>109424449The T14 was twice as expensive as the L14 when it was new. Build quality of another world. It's silly to not spend an extra $100 on it in my opinion.
>>109424473The ryzen is far better in literally every way though, why would I want the intel?
>>109424597I see, thank you very much
>>109424598This, the ryzen pro is stonger than my fucking i7 8700, intel was getting their fucking cheeks clapped back in the T14 gen 2 days
bam pu
>>109426603grim
>>109423367>$1488
chinkpad bamp
So what exactly happened to Thinkpads that they are no longer recommended post-T480 era? Worse build quality? Way more expensive? Soldered or proprietary parts? Not upgradable?Heck, why is the likes of the T480 even getting recommended? I remember years ago that the "ggod" models were the T430 and older. I understand that you cannot get much done with a 15 year or older laptop so you probably have to settle for the next best.
>>109432516Something about libreboot nonsense as well as having two RAM slots for equal sized SO-DIMMs, for my needs a sandy thinkpad with the goat keyboard or ivy chinkpad with 16GB of RAM would actually serve me quite well even to this day, the problem with old thinkpads is the price of them is still sky high for the capability of the laptops, a slow ass dual core T420 still goes for a dumb amount of money ($90-$150) meanwhile you can get the T460/T470 which come with much faster dual cores (literally 60% more performance, a 256GB NVME drive, support for up to 32GB of 2400MHz all for the same money, meanwhile the T480 is triple the price of a dual core T470 for 60% more CPU performance on eBay, meanwhile the T14 Gen 2 is similar money and destroys it.Also youtube destroyed the T480 by meming it to death, same with T440P, you're paying fuck tons of money upgrading an old ass haswell laptop with 1080P IPS, 16GB of RAM, T450 trackpad, etc just to be stuck using old storage technology and have a thicker laptop for no reason when you could go T470 for less money and get newer technology in a dual core, or just skip straight to a thinkpad from 2021 and actually get some performance for the money.
>>109432516old good new bad!no but seriously it's a group think thingit's why it's after better to be able to think and make decisions for yourself
>>109416932stop buying chink shit batteries from temu and dodgy chargers from craigslist minorities
>>109432743>stop buying chink shit>chinkpadanon, I...
my indecisive ass just bought both a T14s AMD G6 and a P14s AMD G6 - they both have 30 day returns so one seller is going to be unhappy with me. I'm probably overpaying, they were both around 1k USD, but my current laptop is on its last legs. The T has a WWAN card and 8c/16t CPU, and the P has a 12c/24t CPU. both have 32gb ram and a 512gb SSD. I'm leaning towards the P because I have some CPU-heavy workloads for work but something about having 5G built in to my laptop really tickles me the right way.Either way, this is my first thinkpad because i'm damn sick of how shitty and unrepairable rgb gaymer slop laptops are.
>>109433374If you're using Linux, P14s and T14s has 100% and 50% respectivelyof having MediaKEK WLAN chip. MediaKEK is a giganigger when it comes to providing usable WLAN driver
>>109433445Thanks for the heads up - I assume i can just swap it out for something else from my pile of dead laptops? or is this the type of shit i should just abort over? I can't really use intel because their p-core/e-core split and lack of avx-512 on e-cores for my work.
>>109433445>MediaKEK is a giganigger when it comes to providing usable WLAN driveryou're not kidding, it's a pain how bad mediatek is. I've had some of their cpus in my phones and tablets and even if they're affordable, they're sometimes completely useless. One of my phones would just turn off when I used the camera. and my dad's tablet would just freeze, and you couldn't turn it off and had to wait until the battery ran out to recharge it and use it again
>>109433445>wondered why my Ralink usb wifi was so slow and wonky with the speed on Linux>it's fucking mediakekThat's a real shame they're using such garbage in a rather expensive fucking computer, my T470 just saturates my 450mbps internet with the intel>>109433472Wifi has been soldered on since T480 unfortunately.
>>109433479oh well, usb wifi it is. I have ethernet at my 2 primary working locations so nbd. I guess its not enough of a deal breaker to go laptopless
>>109433541YMMV, maybe the wlan driver has improved since then. Who knows?
Think old Framework laptops will eventually replace buying old Thinkpads?
>>109325724is the best combo deskstop + old thinkpad ?can't think of anything more sturdier than that
>>109435107no, severely doubt that. framework is just another gimmick and a way to make a niche group consooome. you’re far better off buying a business pc and upgrade it when it comes to value, environment, and quality. the only ones who’ll be duped by it are the easily influenced trend chasers
>>109435167Yeah something like that.I had a P50 as a desktop replacement, now a docked Z13.But if you do anything demanding, more that twice a week you kinda need a desktop, mayyyybe Thinkpad + eGPU if it's just for casual, non PvP gayming.
>>109435167if you want to work with demanding stuff it's pretty much impossible to avoid a desktop. especially if you need a powerful dedicated graphics card for AI or somethinga laptop, even how much you spend on it, would be inferior to a desktop in that regard
Man I goofed up, I ordered a couple of thinkpad t14 g3 thinking I'd upgrade them when I got them, and just now figured out they had ddr5 and ddr4, and I don't have any extra ddr5 sticks lying aroundI guess it's my own fault for thinking it was so old that it was obviously ddr4, but still. A new stick of 32 gb ddr5 ram costs as much as I paid for a laptopluckily they were 16 gb ram so they'll ast least be usable I guess
>>109437692scratch that, it’s ddr4, the amd has soldered ddr5 and I’ve ordered intels. really thought I’d goofed up there
