I have a 5411 with the H series cpu. It's great. I upgraded from my 5400 and it's identical, keyboard, screen, ports. The newer ones swap the barrel charger for another USB -C. The silver ones have paint that falls off pretty badly, but they're good quality. I have heard the 11th gen H series ones overheat, mine doesn't get above 90 even when I'm gaming. I got my wife a 5510 for her school and the battery lasts 6-8 hours. They're common enough you can get new batteries or fish out the ones with good battery health

You should get a 14nm laptop from 2016 onward Anon, the Intel HD graphics are decent for an integrated thing and they are reliable and use less energy, also the entire platform while dated at this point are better than what was available in 2013, I personally don't even like dedicated GPUs in laptops because the failure rate is higher and it uses more energy and makes more heat, also the 14nm laptops (bar T480) have fallen in price so hard, we're talking less than $100 for a T470 thinkpad with 8GB of RAM (upgradable to 32) an M.2 SSD 256GB in it, stuff 2013 laptops didn't have, so unless you absolutely want a socketed CPU, dvd drive from the era, get a 2016 skylake laptop onward.

Display quality is subjective because your eyes are, but brightness, contrast and color deviation are more important to subjective image quality than pixel density or display tech (IPS/OLED).

300 nits is the minimum.
400 nits is good enough in any home or office environment.
500 nits is better for outdoor use in bright sunlight.

Higher contrast is always better.
Matte looks better than glossy in most real world environments.

Good sRGB coverage and low color deviation are more important than higher color space coverage like Adobe RGB or DCI-P3/Display P3 unless you're a professional graphic designer.

P14s has slightly better cooling from what I hear, and comes with an ethernet jack. I don't think there's a meaningful difference in wattage, you just get to sit in the boost clock more because the cooling is slightly stronger. The difference is minimal though, just pick based on whether you want an ever so slightly thinner aluminium chassis or an ever so slightly thicker plastic chassis with an ethernet port.

My Dad had a number of E series and one small L series.
All of them held up well, besides the battery. But no freezing, crashing or anything like that.
The keyboard felt about the same as my P50 at the time, but your milage may vary obv.
In my understanding E and L are just not as well built as T/P/X series and offer less "cutting edge" specs: Not as optimized as an T series, no dGPU like the P series and not as small/light as an X series.

- L440: solidly built base unit, comparable to Sandy/Ivy Bridge T series; lid is flexier than usual
- L460-L490: slightly better lids but base unit is easier to crack, especially on L480-L490

I want to learn how to do basic Laptopt/Computer repair and diagnoses. So far I've only salvaged parts from non-functioning thinkpads into other slightly more functional ones to some success. So far all I've learned has been from searching and reading whatever is on the forum for my extremely specific question. Sometimes it works but many times it doesnt.

What resources/apps exist to help me understand more of my laptop? For example why does my T440p goes faster with a specific HDD than with another one? What exists that could help me read the "health" of an HDD?

I tried adding a 4gb ddr4 ram stick to my daily T490 but it's completely invisible even in the bios, as if it wasn't placed at all, I gave up on that as well

Also, I read that some laptops can only be upgraded to a specific resolution. How or why?

I just feel like I want to learn more but don't know what i need to learn or how, and am simply a cumbersome retard

service manuals is the first thing you should get before tinkering - helps with dismantle/assemble process. smart for hdd health, but I wouldn't bother with it too much. hdds are tricky, they keep going for years without issue a and one day they are dead. when it dies, it dies - you should keep backkups instead of worrying about the failure.
ram sitcks are usually non-issue, but sometime they are, could be failed module, damaged pins on mobo or some incompatibility - try upgrading bios.

So my 2015 zenbook its showing its age, i want something to install linux on and code some video games on the go on godot. If i'm reading correctly if i want something that will last, is repairable, cheap and actually has some 2020 perf i should be aiming for T14g1 right? How long does it last on battery? Thoughts on touch vs non-touch displays?

I'm looking for a (relatively) new model, but all the ones I've seen either have a low resolution display, have a touchscreen display, have 8GB of total RAM, or are unreasonably priced as a consequence of the RAM shortage--most of the newer models have soldered RAM ffs; it's not like you can reuse the modules elsewhere. A lot of them are priced high, while having a wasted battery--if any--and no NVME. The best you can hope to come across is a 256GB NVME.

I might just go with a T480s for a guaranteed high-quality display, and hope I can get one with 8GB soldered RAM so I can upgrade it to at least 16GB total later on.

This might seem kind of unintuitive, but the best gaming laptops that give the most bang for your bucks are actually the low end ones. They create far less heat and noise, and cost the same as their respective desktop versions. The more expensive ones have severely reduced performance compared to desktop versions while costing the same.
You can get refurbished/outlet rx6500m/rtx 3050 gaming laptops for around $400, usually with only 8 gb ram and 256 gb ssd but they're usually easy to replace. Though sometimes you find bargains, I bought several refurbished Lenovo LOQ gaming laptops with rtx3050s and 24 gb of ram for $400 each last year. I guess they had too many of them in stock or something. Gave two two my nephew and niece, two to my friend's kids, and I still have a couple of them left. And in total they cost pretty much the same as a high end gaming laptop.

All the criticism the TP25 got was valid, but with where I'm at in life I value being able to have all the same keys and layout when I have it on a USB-C dock or when I've got it around the house. Coming from T450 etc the main downgrade is in the trackpoint buttons which are much shallower and need more pressure to stay in the pressed state. The keyboard keys are a little shallower but easy to get used to.

I fell for the meme and tried a T480 a while ago and thought it was pretty good, but nothing mind blowing. That broke after I spilled water on it, so I bought a T530 instead. I don't know why this wasn't recommended to me instead, this thing is fucking amazing, genuinely I can't stop using this machine as my daily driver and I even prefer it over my Lenovo Legion 5. I've started doing my gayme development on it since I figure targeting a weak computer means it will run on anything. Might try a X220 sometime but this thing is definitely my favorite laptop I've had probably since my first ever laptop I got as a wee lad.

I recently charged my Thinkpad again and the battery on it got so impossibly hot I thought it would explode. I left it outside at night to cool down. Should I just throw it away? It's for x230. Is Kingsener good for replacement X230 batteries? I bought one from Greencell 4 years ago and it's already degraded to fucking 53%. Any other third party batteries you would recommend?

That's a generous estimate for li-ion actually. But only if they mean full 0-100-0 cycle.
ThinkPads should all have bios or thinkvantage settings to limit max charge and significantly prolong battery decay.

What’s something small and lightweight that i can take with me easily. Currently my everyday carry is a 2015 macbook air i got gifted when a friend upgraded. It fits really nicely in my small bag that i carry everywhere. Is there a machine that has a bit more beef or battery life than my current machine at that size? Thank you for helping.

All the thinkpads are being replaced by nice sleek silver hp machines.
Old machines get sold on to some third party.
But the IT guy in charge of managing it has been laid off.
Most the it stuff has been out sourced to India.

Its tragic, my mom's work T480s got traded for a T14 Gen 5 and the IT guy acted like it was the oldest notherfucker ever, sure its outclassed by new stuff but it wasn't unusable, it had a single sodimm slot for a goofy 24GB of RAM, but it still was fine, I hope some autist gets ahold of it down the line because my mom had it docked with dual 1440p chinkvision 165hz screens and never touched the keyboard or track pad, looked fuckin mint when I rubbed it down with a little isopropyl.

I've ordered a couple of these from Denmark now, T14 gen 2. They've been pretty aggressive with the prices this week, probably to sell to students. You also get 2 years warranty.

i checked local marketplace. t14 gen2s are 1.5-2x price of t480s. going to buy i5 8350U t480

how possible is it to upgrade the motherboard on a x220? I found one for cheap but don't want to use it's slow processor. I thought of buying a more recent laptop motherboard on ebay (at least one with DDR4 ram support) and replace it with that.

The ones I bought were 1.6x the price, but I think that's totally fair considering they're three years newer. And they had the i5 11th generation cpus which pretty much were the last usable intel cpus before the estrogen cores.

Well you need to connect the keyboard, trackpoint, trackpad and x220 batteries.
Also make the cooling system and ports work, possibly cut away some structural keyboard supports to make the mobo fit...
For the panel it's probably easier to just use any newer, eDP compatible panel.
It's really better to just start with a new mobo design.

Libreboot's new site layout looks super gay. Wonder if they at least made it more readable.

Why didnt lelnovo stop at this? Clearly removing a layer of keys and fucking up the layout isnt a necessary compromise to make the laptop thinner like soldershit, they could done the old layout but chiclet and everyone would've been fine, because chiclet does feel and look better, same with deleting the dvd drive which drastically made it thinner and gave space for more batt and not having a cpu socket sticking up off the board or even ram slots on the carbon made it stupid thin, but clearly messing with the keyboard doesn't give us anything because it can fit on a 25th retro meme, a 2017 ultrabook

Which of the T14 thinkpads do you prefer between T2 and T3? They're pretty much the same price. There's only intel ones with upgradable ram and ssds where I live. I'm probably going to buy the T3 since it's newer although I'm not particularly fond of the 12th generation intel cpus. Which I would guess is the reason they're the same price.

So what exactly happened to Thinkpads that they are no longer recommended post-T480 era? Worse build quality? Way more expensive? Soldered or proprietary parts? Not upgradable?
Heck, why is the likes of the T480 even getting recommended? I remember years ago that the "ggod" models were the T430 and older. I understand that you cannot get much done with a 15 year or older laptop so you probably have to settle for the next best.

Something about libreboot nonsense as well as having two RAM slots for equal sized SO-DIMMs, for my needs a sandy thinkpad with the goat keyboard or ivy chinkpad with 16GB of RAM would actually serve me quite well even to this day, the problem with old thinkpads is the price of them is still sky high for the capability of the laptops, a slow ass dual core T420 still goes for a dumb amount of money ($90-$150) meanwhile you can get the T460/T470 which come with much faster dual cores (literally 60% more performance, a 256GB NVME drive, support for up to 32GB of 2400MHz all for the same money, meanwhile the T480 is triple the price of a dual core T470 for 60% more CPU performance on eBay, meanwhile the T14 Gen 2 is similar money and destroys it.

Also youtube destroyed the T480 by meming it to death, same with T440P, you're paying fuck tons of money upgrading an old ass haswell laptop with 1080P IPS, 16GB of RAM, T450 trackpad, etc just to be stuck using old storage technology and have a thicker laptop for no reason when you could go T470 for less money and get newer technology in a dual core, or just skip straight to a thinkpad from 2021 and actually get some performance for the money.

my indecisive ass just bought both a T14s AMD G6 and a P14s AMD G6 - they both have 30 day returns so one seller is going to be unhappy with me. I'm probably overpaying, they were both around 1k USD, but my current laptop is on its last legs.

The T has a WWAN card and 8c/16t CPU, and the P has a 12c/24t CPU. both have 32gb ram and a 512gb SSD. I'm leaning towards the P because I have some CPU-heavy workloads for work but something about having 5G built in to my laptop really tickles me the right way.

Either way, this is my first thinkpad because i'm damn sick of how shitty and unrepairable rgb gaymer slop laptops are.

you're not kidding, it's a pain how bad mediatek is. I've had some of their cpus in my phones and tablets and even if they're affordable, they're sometimes completely useless. One of my phones would just turn off when I used the camera. and my dad's tablet would just freeze, and you couldn't turn it off and had to wait until the battery ran out to recharge it and use it again
