Seeing I hacked together a tool to format the memory card back to 32MB, I tried wiping the 128MB card as well to see if my assumption that having the correct specs in the memory controller would allow the official firmware to reformat it correctly, and it did.
This made me wonder if the 32MB chip was potentially a relablled 8MB chip with the 32MB filesystem forcefully written into it, so I wrote more than 8MB to it but the filesystem still seems intact so I think it really is just a mistake in the specs loaded into the memory controller.
Formatting the 128MB card did not move the fat table outside the first block, though.

Something that is of interest to you and your field of choice. If you don't know your field of choice, I'd wager you will do some level of web development whether you want to or not...

>also who has that huge list of programming projects you can do
When I was job seeking I was looking at this: https://github.com/codecrafters-io/build-your-own-x
I didn't actually do any of these since I got a job soon enough.
Whatever field you're interested in, just do something that you can discuss.
Just working on a personal project and having discussion points about your code is important, you don't need to show them your code (and they probably won't read it anyways).
>I had XYZ concerns with my database implementation and solved it by doing A, B, & C. Or,

>do they even look at your github when you apply for jobs?
I have no clue if they look at your GitHub, that is probably somewhat random & depends on who is reading your resume. 9 out of 10 times, HR is reading it & has no clue what GitHub is.

So stepping through my auth process I have found that early on when reading bytes from the card for sending to the mechacon, the first one reads normally but the second delivers a bunch of zero bytes, which is abnormal and does result in the auth process failing when the mechacon sends back challenges.
However, I was looking at the 32MB card in particular and decided to check the 128MB card (which has the specs set up correctly in the memory controller) and my auth routine worked with it.
So I'm wondering what's under these blobs in the memory cards. There must be different revisions of these knockoff memory controllers out there.
>>
Why is Rust requiring types for function declarations superior?
>>
>>109337106
What do you mean?
If you mean why the syntax, easier parsing.
If you mean why the semantics, easier inference.

Nevermind I just remembered from my own experience typescript doesn't like forgoing them because it takes forever for the compiler to infer types.

This continues to be weird.
So if I send something like getspecs before starting auth, CardMaterial is all zeros or something else, but if I send probe before starting auth, I get a consistent value from CardMaterial.
Both the knockoff cards send the same values back for Card Material but it should be a unique value per memory card.
Mechacon clearly does not like the values I'm getting from the memory cards, because it returns zeros, and that throws an error when you get to step F0 09, but because I'm only checking for RECV1 to go back to 1D100 (which happens on official cards and the 32 and 64MB cards), the 128MB card that keeps returning 1100 just keeps going through the auth process.
But all the cards work with official firmware, so there must be something going on whether timing or order or type of commands or something else.
>>
>>109337701
Well, have you looked at official firmware then?
>>
File: ps2fagcard3.png (38 KB, 711x657)
38 KB PNG
Ha ha, what the fuck?
Ok, so sending the probe command does seem to be important before starting the auth process with these knock offs, but the real issue was handling this 0x8F message to the mechacon.
Unlike the other mechacon messages, in the sdk this one has a loop where it will retry if it gets a 0x01 result and I had put a TODO in my routine to handle that later but it wasn't an issue with the official memory cards.
Apparently with the knockoff cards, this is an issue.
Hilariously, when I first put the check and loop in, I didn't add any delay and the loop was locking up the mechacon such that when I sent a dump memory command it would interrupt it enough to actually advance, so sending two or three dumpmems ended up with the card getting authed.
Waiting on a vblank in there is enough delay to work, but I'll probably use another timer instead. But even though it was my fucking fault, that 128MB card was still authenticating even though it was getting null responses from the mechacon and literally throwing errors. Good times.
