>>109346334Anons, I am a 44 year old NEET who kind of likes computers after being addicted to the internet for most of my adult life. I have a felony conviction which causes me to need to register and report my location every 5 years. Can I make it as a programmer? I would settle for 90K starting but I would prefer to make it at FAANG. If I get a computer science degree will that get me a job? I am smarter than everyone I know, so please answer with that in mind.

>>109346360>Database Engineer>Database ArchitectYou know what? After seeing a couple of database schemas designed by "software engineers" I'd want a "database architect" if I were doing a greenfield project.
>>109346423the only possibility this is real at all is that it involves basketball americans hired on DEI doing pretend work. nobody in the world could be this clueless to say that during a probation period.upvoted for such an obviously real story. and take my gold while you're at it gentlesir.
>>109346423LMAO
>>109346399>felony convictionYou will never be trusted with Software Engineering or Information Technology. I would suggest you apply to be a mechanic through whatever school program they got at your local college. Pay is decent if you specialize in stuff like Dieseals but you will never be trusted around aircraft and barely trusted around naval vessels. If you were under the age of 39 you could still try applying for the military but a felony is a hard no majority of the time.
>>109346449Oh relax, it's funny.
>>109346456Eh. Not at a FAANG. Some smaller companies never do background checks. Although I don't know how you bootstrap as a junior like that. Hell I don't know how you bootstrap as a 22 year old college graduate with no convictions and a portfolio of side projects. The only reason I got most of my jobs is because I already knew people.
>>109346473Yeah but nepotism and friends supersedes everything anyways. If you have a felony conviction you have a near zero chance of getting started. Especially since he claims to be a NEET so any major gap between work longer than 2 years is almost blacklisted which is why most normal people get their masters degree to make up for that lack of work.
I just started an in-person course for cyber security. The lecturer just played for us an EliTheComputerGuy video on Windows Server Active Directory Directory Management. Then asked>Who here's head is exploding?I thought the video was a good basic introduction. Eli is always very clear. Then the lecturer drops a bombshell>We are going to spend the next 10 weeks breaking this down.My ears were ringing, I broke a sweat as a wave of panic rolls over me.I'm going to be so fucking bored.

>>109346541ELI's older stuff was pretty decent but he never updated those videos so its going to be as outdated as any college degree program.I hope you didn't pay for that course it sounds mediocre.

We are now down to 3 people on my product team. My job has been reduced to compiling requirements, feeding them to an agent to be written up as work items on ADO which are then automatically fed to implementation agents. I assign pity tasks to the other two team members who take a week to perform a task an agent can do in 30 minutes, and the only bugs coming out of testing in the last 2 months have been from them. My boss understands this, but needs them billing the project to justify our budget.I've spent the last 3 months having agents build all the internal "nice to haves but never had the budget" tools and interfaces. I've tried increasing the product scope, with minor success, but am limited due to not scaring the clients and "keeping the status quo" from management. Any increased scope I've won has been shred through by the agents. At this point I'm just on autopilot until stakeholders wake up to the reality on the ground.
>>109346917thank you ranjesh, upvote!
Agentic projects are a fad. All the early adopters say AI is the future and will only get better. If that's the case: What happens when AI gets good enough that you don't need to fumble with agentic projects? If you believe in hyperscaling, then you already understand that agentic projects are a stopgap, and agentic stuff will soon become deprecated. You have to bet *against* hyperscaling to think agentic skillsets will survive long term. The only use of agentic skillsets is to convince someone to give you money for your work or your business, while the fad is still going. If you're only in it for the money, then you are smarter than the rest of your peers.
>>109347074On this note, if you're not already good at cloud architecture, then it's time to learn.Enterprises are already at the API-primary phase because local hardware just cannot compete, and this disparity will only get worse from hyperscaling.Compute facilities will also improve and diversify their offerings, allowing physical and logical segregation of resources as desired.Harnesses and frameworks are already mostly drop-in, and the current loose ends will certainly be tied off in the years to come.Together, this means cloud architecture pros (that can orchestrate work while keeping costs low) will be the new hotness.Of course, in the distant future, even cloud architecture skillsets will eventually also not be needed. If you can follow a guide today on agentic projects, and have any sort of charisma, then you can get an immediate massive pay bump. While the fad is running its course, get better at cloud architecture, including managing models and agents and etc in the cloud. So you're ready for that to take off.During all this, you should be forking money between building a homestead and investing. No one is trying to avoid the consumption crash (where a critical mass of consumers have no income to buy goods/services), so a crash is definitely coming. There are verbal promises for a "robot tax" (UBI) but that framework has seen zero development/legislation and is unlikely to be in place in time.I think it's inevitable that companies with all this power complete take over a random powerless country (like how unions take over a town). This would allow them to operate outside of regulatory environments on all fronts, including creating "utopia" (dystopia) with gatekept immigration. This would be a form of modern colonialism, the same way that colonial-era powers exploited foreign nations, "utopia" would exploit first-world nations. There's already precedence with ocean vessels "buying" flagging from certain powerless countries.
>>109347074>>109347230TLDR today's agentic model is not permanent, hyperscaling cloud is next, get money while you can to homestead and build investment capital, society will crash from lack of consumption, companies will exploit the crash to establish full legal independence, and the world will enter permanent poverty and slavery under techno-feudalism. Get ahead of it, do not fall victim to it.

>>109352816Yes. They are pushing it hard in my company. When AI wasn't as powerful (like copilot's autocomplete or early chatgpt) I didn't feel it hindered my skills in any way. Auto complete saved me a lot of typing and I could use chatgpt for concrete, small bits of code. They we started using Codex and Claude. Models were better but still needed a lot of guidance and planning so you more or less staid in touch with what you were building. Then we got access to Opus and Fable and people either just don't plan at all, if they do no one bothers reading the plans. We had a chat about gigantic PRs with our manager because people just blindly approve them but the truth is thar absolutely no one actually knows the code base. Also everyone acts like they're hot shit, self proclaiming them AI "experts" when you can learn pretty much everything you need in a couple of days.
>>109352816It's just going up a layer of abstraction. Syntax/standard library intuitions etc. are probably atrophying, although it's only been a few months so the jury is still out. In terms of overall architecture, understanding the system as a whole and how the pieces fit together, that's basically the only remaining part of my job. I just delegate the implementation to a clanker. I assume that as the models get better, the level of abstraction that I operate on will increase. You get to a point where you know what a specific module's role is and the general shape of it's input and output is, and increasingly delegate the ownership of it's specific implementation to an agent. Until you get used to the model's capabilities, it sounds terrifying to do that, and up until a few months ago, it was irresponsible. I would not trust an agent with that level ownership 6 months ago. With the latest models, I do.I think the light bulb moment happens when a developer becomes intimately aware of what the model is capable of, allowing them to comfortably defer to it within those bounds. Doing that requires spending a lot of time with models, it's a skill in itself. I have no idea how much more ownership they will be capable of 6 months from now. This could all change completely if there is another step function increase in capability.
>>109352816I mean maybe if you are only using AI for programming entirely. Doing outside programming without AI kinda keeps your skills up. I just dont care enough to try at all at my current job it's all retarded anyway
>>109353002I also want to clarify that my current set up only works because I am effectively a 1 man shop on my project with two developers that I hand fake tasks to. I WFH and upper management expects me to become great friends with our stakeholders and customers in order to secure more business deals. But first of all, I'm kind of autistic and not a good people person, and second, our customers are mostly engineers and silicon valley managers who also aren't very social - they don't like talking about the world, games, movies, the World Cup, sports, or anything outside of work. They keep everything strictly business, and whenever I have a meeting with them it's over in 5 minutes.I actually got chewed out by my boss today because he saw some of my meeting recordings and said I'm too cold and need to bring more warmth to the relationship I have with our customers. So in today's meeting I tried to be more sociable and it went like this:>welcome back from PTO, Sir. I hope you had a wonderful time>"thank you">so what did you do during the weekend?>"nothing much. I stayed at home.">did you watch the world cup finals>"no">it's really hot today>"yes"At that point I noticed he started getting annoyed with my questions so I just got started talking business and finished the meeting in 10 minutes. This is the hardest job in the world

>>109357403All the models have their strengths. I haven’t been using Opus much since Fable came out. Probably the best for having a view of the entire project and doing planning/architecting with. I don't like using Fable for code reviewing other people's PRs though, it sure finds a lot of shit that it will tell you is definitely a problem but actually isn't or is pre-existing. Fable and Opus also go way overboard on the comments overexplaining shit in a way that is hyper specific to a particular context too so I prefer to use Sonnet for the actual dev agents once the work has been split up into bite sized epics/stories by Fable or Opus.I don't have gippity at work but I use it for my personal projects due to being a bit more generous on token usage. Sol makes a pretty great dev agent, really good at autistic details, but it gets extremely focused on little shit that doesn't matter for planning while missing some big picture stuff. Fable is a bit better for planning imo.

>>109364425how would a fledgling company find clients? what would you start as a small business owner?
i graduated with a 4.0 in CS from my state school on a full ride and i feel like the whole experience was worthless.my whole life i wanted to work for a big company like apple or google, and instead i work for a small family owned firm where i barely do any engineering. i like the company, and i make 75k doing nothing most of the time, but i feel so disappointed, like i failed.i probably could've grinded leetcode but i guess i just didn't have it in me anymore. i did all that while i was a student in the early 2020s during peak h1b and layoffs and i had so many bad interviews and i got ghosted by so many employers that it demoralized me.the bright side is i'm only 22 so i guess i could pivot but i feel like every day i spend at this local company lowers my odds of ever breaking into big tech.i already took the lsat so i might just pivot into law at this point. i love computers but i hate the tech industry right now.

For them, they had a jr dev making a technician salary ($20/hr). I then straight up quit during the crypto boom and lived off bitcoin for 10 months until they called me back and offered me an actual SWE role at $80k starting right as everything was crashing.

Has been useful more times than I can count.
>trying get a job for 5mo now>apply everywhere>get 305 interviews each week>never go to next round>reject by hr 17 times already>my application to interview rate is 6%>find a guy saying in reddit he found a job in a month by applying 20 times a day>his application to interview rate was 4%>he got 13 interviews with hr but proceeded to next round in 6 of them>this is a 50% pass rate compared to mine which has been 0%>talking to him>learn he is blackIsnt a bit weird that 2 people have a similar application to interview rate but after the round with mandatory video where the cunts can see your phenotype the experience can change so much? Also this guy told me to work on social skills bro. Everytime you say you cannot find a job, here and there people you say that it is your social skills.
>>109356433Brazil is great for me because I'm a hikikomori. High-quality meat and food are really cheap here. Also rent and housing are cheap as hell. I'm barely 35 and already about to buy my third house sometimes it feels like I'm cheating at life. The downside: if you're a normalfag who likes going out, there's roughly a 1% chance you'll get stabbed by someone trying to steal your phone. People here can be brutal and getting robbed often ends with you getting badly hurt or killed, not just pickpocketed. It's not petty theft you have to worry about, it's people willing to seriously harm you because of $100 bucks.Electronics and similar goods also cost about 70% more than in the US, because imports get taxed at up to 100%. So my $200 anime figs ends up costing $400, half of it goes straight to the government.Surprisingly enough the actual taxes I pay to the government from my full-time WFH job are only around 10% year so that's also not too bad
>>109365311Honestly. Don't think too much about it. Getting a job is 99% about luck if you don't have connections. Also we're in the worst job market ever, I was getting job offers daily during the height of the pandemic and now it's 100 applications per interview.
>voice concerns multiple times that what i'm working on is shit, it will confuse users and reflect badly on us, it's gonna be a bitch to maintain, it's based on previous shitty work that was half baked and i'm inheriting the mess and i'm the one who has to actually bring it to the users>i hate working on it but now i've sunk too much time into it to push back again>makes me dread working at all, procrastinate>it's gonna reflect bad on me because i should have just refused to work on it, now i'm responsible for it
>>109363145Will you then finally fuck off with your cringe?
>>109363752You apply.
>>109364470If I were set on that path, I'd cozy up to a local shop and get to know their problems before doing anything. Then as part of the cozying I would propose an idea and sell my skillset. For example helping set up POSS. And maybe I'd do a little bit for free. Then propose more, and ask to be paid. While doing this I might go to multiple other local shops and point to another local shop and say I'm already doing it for them. Stretching the truth. Maybe one would bite. That's how I got my current job, I was a "hot candidate" because my agent told my employer I was interviewing for other positions (completely true but they were shitter jobs). You don't have to take it from me. Take it from another person with my mindset, a very public and successful figure that talks about grassroots-level building goinf from zero to established... Gordon Ramsey. This faggot >>109364474 thinks everyone here is a retard like him but he is incorrect. I was just suggesting an alternative mindset but people like him think in terms of black and white and constantly get burned for doing so.

>>109364582>and many people (especially immigrants and international students in china) were cheating the system through disability accommodations or by literally cheating on the test remotely using paid services out of chinaits so great everything is like this. third worlders pillaging anything they can get their hands on, exploiting it, or defrauding it. lots of positions of responsibility in the future are going to be occupied by brown people who have zero integrity and honesty.cant wait to see more bridge collapses and buildings falling apart because we decided to mass import the third world to save boomer pensions.
>>109366483it's funny because I thought I would feel better after my promotion and raise (10kish more) but honestly..... I just ended up spending more due to work stress on dumber shit. Now I honestly would rather get fired so I can pull all my money from my company savings to pay some bills and go for a trip. Everything also increased in price significantly so it's like... alright thanks?
tech WORKERS general? >>109364653 >>109365311>>109367308people can't find a job with a degree, and you think you are better than people with no degrees because you followed an academic path and thought it would land you a job with 100% certainty (and probably remote, and with a >$100k salary). how can't you see how delusional you are? kek

I feel bad for you tech bros working in actual tech departments. I'm the only tech worker in my office and I'd much rather deal with idealistic fresh out of college cuties and milfs going thru menopause than beta bitch redditors and pajeets.

Why don't these fuckers just expect more from people instead of firing them? Like I can completely understand expecting x2 of without AI assistance me but they just keep axing people. It feels like shit trying to ping someone you were talking with yesterday and their account is suddenly archived and nobody in their team can follow because they didn't have the time to handover shit or all your coworker talk about is when will it be their turn
>>109360561Even a misdemeanor DUI years earlier, you'd be surprised how much it changes people's trust in you. People who've never gotten into any trouble will assume you're a total scumbag. Unfortunately, that's a lot of people, especially in office environments. You don't need everyone to think you're scum for it to inhibit your career, you just need like one or two key people at a company to. But a felony is next level. Even if it was for drugs, a majority of people will find that off-putting and not want to be around you.>>109361175It means have an email exchange with your boss for any meaningful decisions that would fall outside your responsibilities, and save anything extra you've accomplished or added to the project for meetings where your boss's boss will hear you say it, ensuring you get credit for it.I've had this situation before where my boss is underqualified and basically takes credit for whatever I get done. Blame rolls downhill too. Hence subtly getting major decisions in writing by emailing them.
>>109369249Like I said: people wonder why anyone with a record winds up desperate enough to reoffend. What a trash system designed specifically to generate profit for private prisons.
>>109369494Kill yourself evil bastard, the old system was cutting off the heads of reoffenders and we should go back to it. It's not the world's job to suck your dick for being a criminal
How can we purge these threads of normies (that includes utwg)? Basically we have slow utwg and utwg mixed with barely tech blogging.I'm sorry for normies who bought into tech meme, but what did you expect? For past 5-10 years tech has been almost like janitors buying stocks. If everyone is doing something then it's a scam or about to collapse. You clearly no capability to get a skill based job, if you thought it's any different from law, med, architecture or real engineering.
>>109369515NTA. You fucking moron. It should be in your interest so that those people are rehabilitated and back to being a productive member of society but you're too stupid to understand this.
Looking for a sanity check, hopefully this is the right place. I'll keep it short.I work for a small, federally-regulated company in an IT role. Since it's small, IT means everything, plus some non-tech projects as needed. And since it's regulated, there's a lot of compliance to everything I do and touch.I've been at this company for about 15 years now, total comp is $200k. We formally have a 50 hour work week, but it's typically 55-60 for me (onsite only). The hours are starting to feel long, and I've run out of mobility in either title or salary. How reasonable is it to find another position that either pays similarly with fewer hours (I'd love 4/10 or 9/80), or pays more with similar hours? I'm in the American northeast.
>>109369743Opinions are irrelevant, either higher a placement agent that will find a position for your or start applying yourself.Be prepared to pay 5-10k to the agent but he will find you the job you want with the hours you want.
>indian uses white thumbs up emoji in slack
>>109369895>Opinions are irrelevantI haven't interviewed in over a decade, so I'm mostly interested in what the current job market looks like relative to my salary level. It's difficult to tell if I'm overpaid, underpaid, or about average by job postings alone, so any anecdotal feedback ITT is valuable.
we need a new bread>>109369743I'm not american, and also don't know much about IT, but here's my opinion:>total comp is $200k>50 hour work week, but it's typically 55-60 for me (onsite only)>find another position that either pays similarly with fewer hours (I'd love 4/10 or 9/80)I doubt you'll be able to find something similar...can you lower your living standards? if so, how about asking your employer to halve your working hours for half the pay?also, does your company offer severance to the employees it lays off? the future of the whole industry looks grim IMO, so maybe you could endure your working conditions a bit more while preparing to get a lower pay or maybe even be laid off.
