READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

when do you guys retire a server? My current server is old
>Supermicro LGA 1366 dual socket
>Dual Xeon x5690's (12c24t combined)
>96GB DDR3 1333MHz ECC RDIMM
>500GB SATA SSD
>60TB HDD Storage
>single slot Nvidia GT710 passive (HDMI hookup)
>LSI 9211-8i HBA
>10Gb/s PCIe NIC
>USB 3.2 PCIe card
I have had zero problems with this server for all my needs and I even have some spare parts to keep it going even longer, but man, my server is near 16 years old.

>>
>>109356362
and that's my problem lol, my shit just works. I've yet to find a problem
>>109356367
it was old when I bought it back in 2015 on eBay. I can easily get a new system but its not server stuff. Non Server motherboard, no ECC RAM, tiny bit of PCIe lanes, etc. I was going to possibly buy used again. There's EPYC 7742 (64c128t) and supermicro bundles on eBay for $1200. Maybe another $1200 on 256GB of DDR4 ECC RDIMM 3200MHz kits. Figure with that RAM amount and newer CPU architecture, I'd get another 10 years out of it.

I may not NEED more server power right now, but I'd like to have newer standards and what not. I feel like getting used enterprise hardware isn't as easy as it once was.
>>
>>109356347
keep it for storage and buy a new one if you need compute power
>>
>>109356451
i used to run x58 on my desktop with a 950 and then an a few years later x5675. i ran it overclocked at 4.5ghz. i actually bought two and picked the better one. sold it like five years ago when i upgraded to ryzen but i wish i kept it.
>getting used enterprise hardware isn't as easy as it once was
every one wants cheap ai and many cores and ram. cheap chink adapters exist for basically everything now so a server isn't really a problem for consumer hardware anymore too. friend of mine build himself recently an older zen 2 epic system. apart from the ram and socket itself ping a bit iffy it was easy to setup for him. he runs local ai on it now and game servers.
>>
>>109356481
Guess I'll just run this bitch until it blows up or physically can't do what I want I guess. I used it 99% of the time for NAS purposes, samba shares, occasionally fire up a VM to host a game server.
>>109356482
I'm running my dual X5690s stock and I noticed there are indeed adapters for everything. I'd say the only thing I want a newer server is the ability to run an NVME SSD as a scratch disk when I'm moving a lot of files.

Guess I'll look around and think about it but now that I'm looking, $2500+ for a new setup (half of that is RAM alone) is a lot more HDD space or SSD space I could be adding to my existing server.

You're not taking into consideration the additional overhead of processing and receiving/sending the input, plus it's not the bandwidth that matters as much as the latency

Not the other guy but is it feasible to game in a VM? Potentially using a workstation GPU instead of a gaming GPU? I'm guessing drivers might be an issue
And would you have to pass through the whole GPU and reserve it exclusively for that VM, or can you provision virtual GPUs for different VMs (in Proxmox I suppose)?

Depends on the card, if it supports SR-IOV you can provision virtual GPU's. Only server-grade cards support this. It can be done with a gaming GPU as well but the whole cards has to be passed through

mergerfs and snapraid are copes in userspace
you can do the same and more with just plain lvm. the downside is that lvm does a lot and its configuration isn’t as easy

I'll be traveling and will be taking my laptop with me and want you take my 36TB media pool (btrfs raid0) I use to seed and run a jellyfin server. Is the OWC ThunderBay 4 a good product to get and would it unintentionally format drives if I were to take them out of my desktop, put them into the bay and connect to my LinuxOS laptop? would I have you format it, or would it allow for plug n play JBOD?
>>
>>109358572
Which do you prefer for routing/firewall, pfsense or openwrt?
>>
>>109376296
True, but it's only 10-12 years old while my current hardware is about 6. Hell, I used to run the same exact server on fuckin bulldozer hardware before I decommed my gaming build. What would you suggest that is more recent but still affordable? Not looking to spend a shit ton of money especially when I'm just wanting to do it for the fun of it. And yeah I don't NEED all of those lanes per se, but I do want to add a few more things like an old quadro for transcode, my current gpu for remote gaming, possibly optical and some other shit I simply cannot physically fit on my current board despite technically having enough lanes.
>>
Question, I'm trying to get into private trackers, and it's telling me to get a seedbox for the basic tracker invites.

Anyway, how exactly do you transfer stuff from your seedbox? Or are you meant to just use sftp? Because that seems shit

I'm sorry, you want to lug around 36TB in a drive bay while traveling? What kind of special needs are you anon?
Like, there are so many things wrong with this I'm unsure where to start calling you a retard. I can't fathom how you would go through a single terabyte of media while travelling unless you were going to be gone for like half a year straight and you planned on staying in your hotel room for most of that.

For argument's sake no, these random chingchongium DAS units are not going to randomly format your drives. If they come with hardware switches just make sure to read the manual and leave everything off. It should just be pnp, and JBOD is probably the least retarded way to approach this because you don't want to hardware RAID over an already software RAIDed pool.
>>
>>109376457
I use it. I think others here do too. I use it+snapraid and btrfs on bare drives (makes backups and snapraid a bit faster due to snapshots, and you get the individual benefits of btrfs per drive). I also use a directory on my ssd as a "cache" for writes.
>>109376474
As far as I know LVM isn’t really comparable. It pools storage at the block-device layer, so the member disks do not remain independently mountable filesystems. LVM RAID provides conventional realtime RAID, but it does not reproduce mergerfs + SnapRAID’s independent disks, file-level hashing, delayed snapshot parity, or undelete behavior. It’s a different design with conventional RAID tradeoffs and benefits, not a different implementation of the same features.
>>
>>109376594
You most likely don't need a seedbox.
>>>/g/ptg

>>109376594

>>109376631
>independently mountable filesystems
correct, you make a logical volume and pin it to a specific disk or any number of disks for more copies or any levels of raid that apply. it’s just an abstraction and you can salvage it as long as a copy exists on a working disk. lets you have a bunch of disks and you can choose what level of raid (or not) for each type of data, and if you want those copies striped or mirrored. very flexible but not user friendly.
>>
>>109376647

>>
>>109376631
That’s a good use of lvm, but it’s still a different topology if I understand correctly. If I pin one LV and filesystem to each disk, lvm does not combine them into one namespace, so I would still need mergerfs then or something similar. If I create an lvm raid LV across the disks, it becomes conventional block device RAID and loses snapraid’s independently mountable filesystems, file hashing, delayed snapshot parity, and undelete behavior. lvm is flexible, but it isn’t a drop-in replacement for what I use.

Thoughts on Sync-in? (Alternative to Nextcloud).

https://sync-in.com/

Was proprietary for the past 10 years before going FOSS in 2025

>Sync-in is a French , sovereign, open-source collaborative platform for file storage, sharing, synchronization, and collaboration. It is intended for individuals, businesses, public-sector entities, and institutions seeking a controlled, scalable platform aligned with their operational requirements.

>Our ambition is to contribute to the self-hosting ecosystem with a collaborative platform built on a different architecture, designed to prioritize performance, simple deployment and administration, while giving users lasting control over their data.

>Sync-in has been developed for more than ten years by its founder and engineer Johan Legrand (LinkedIn).

>Over time, the solution has evolved with the support and feedback of several companies, shaped by concrete needs around storage, sharing, synchronization, and administration. Its development is also supported by a team including Thibault Signor and Alex Zalo.

>Sync-in has been published as open source on GitHub since 2025 and is now used by individuals, companies, and public-sector organizations. The solution continues to evolve with a focus on being useful, responsible, and community-driven.

>Rather than building Sync-in on an existing architecture, we chose to start from a blank slate. This approach allowed us to design a platform where storage remains under the user's control, files remain directly readable and usable on the file system, and access rules are applied consistently regardless of the access method: web interface, WebDAV, synchronization, collaborative editing, or API.

>This architecture prioritizes performance for file operations, limits unnecessary data duplication, simplifies deployments, and provides stronger data reversibility..

making a router requires ethernet ports so a laptop wouldn't be advised, an old workstation with an intel iGPU (for jellyfin) can do all of this though. just know it'll be a single point of failure, I like to keep my router/networking separate from the VMs.

it can, but then it’s no different than a file server in a browser ui

>I have one rj45 port I suppose I still need another for outgoing traffic, huh?
you can make it work with VLANs on the switch trunked to the router but depending on your WAN bandwidth/need for multiple VLANs it might not be a good idea since you wont get full line bandwidth between networks

Well this is where your deep fall into the networking abyss begins. For instance VLAN's are super helpful in segregating networks and routing without the need of an extra NIC. Then, by making your laptop a router with a powerful OS you can do so much more like bandwidth limitation, QoS, captive portals, adblocking, VPN access to your network from the outside, DNS names for all your pcs, you name it

Windows just straight reboots without throwing any ILO errors, a fedora install finally threw these. Thoughs?

When a motherboard says it does not support udimm/unbuffered dimm does that mean that plain consumer ram will not work, or is it referring to unbuffered ecc ram or something?

ecc can be registered or unregistered (unbuffered)
both are not consumer ram

How much power does a 3.5" HDD consume on idle?
>>
>>109399486
Something like 5 watts.

Thanks. Huh. A guy I know says his NAS idles at 60W with 2 HDDs. He usually has a few VMs running.

Because it was given away for free as if it was broken

A Seagate Barracuda does 4–7 watts spinning without activity and less than 1.5 watts while on standby.

Every day I check HDD prices on Amazon and every day I am disappointed.

So does that mean that consumer ram is likely to work or no

you didn’t say anything about the memory that it does accept, but the fact that it’s calling out unbuffered as NOT working, my guess is that you need registered ecc
Unless it’s am4 or something that CAN work with unbuffered but not registered OR non-ecc memory and it’s calling out that it can not actually work with ecc
