it was old when I bought it back in 2015 on eBay. I can easily get a new system but its not server stuff. Non Server motherboard, no ECC RAM, tiny bit of PCIe lanes, etc. I was going to possibly buy used again. There's EPYC 7742 (64c128t) and supermicro bundles on eBay for $1200. Maybe another $1200 on 256GB of DDR4 ECC RDIMM 3200MHz kits. Figure with that RAM amount and newer CPU architecture, I'd get another 10 years out of it.

I'm running my dual X5690s stock and I noticed there are indeed adapters for everything. I'd say the only thing I want a newer server is the ability to run an NVME SSD as a scratch disk when I'm moving a lot of files.

Just got a 9070XT about 2 weeks ago, been fighting it ever since. Gaming in a VM is possible. You just use looking glass + GPU pass through + spice and/or USB pass through. Linux virtualization is honestly really good. You can unironically run multiple Linux VMs at once and have them feel next to native with 3d accel and go enabled + all the spice vdagent stuff. Not sure about proxmox. Might be harder. Same with whatever GPU you're using.
