I just got a second monitor. I didnt want to not use a perfectly working monitor so I have this cramped awkward space atm. Is a monitor arm the only way to kinda fix this? The left is a curve and the stand cant turn vertically.

I've done everything under the sun; it's not worth discussing further to be honest. It's just a wasteland now. I'm genuinely really disappointed.
>when I was working at goodwill back when I was 19 it was a real paradise for that stuff.
That sounds like a good time. Personally, I usually avoided Goodwill since they never had worthy stock near me. Local thrift store chains used to have amazing finds even if they'd be messier. I'd find shit like pricey PS1 RPGs and other rare games sometimes, CIB model kits, cool foreign books and music CDs, nice clothes, etc. Nowadays, most thrift stores just copy the Goodwill model, so everything is basically pre-sorted, most of the good shit sold elsewhere (or stolen by employees), and all the remaining shit is priced up accordingly. Treasure hunting is almost non-existent.

There was a neat IBM keyboard for an eBay-competitive price at one I visited recently. Except, it was gummy with a fucky-looking cable, stuck in the boutique section (no discounts apply), and I already know that shit would have been like $5 or less otherwise. Same shit for stuff like controllers and games. It's not fun to go because you already know some cunt is gonna pre-sort* (*screen for good shit) and eBay-match everything anyway. availability is just...less, except if you like, I dunno, Bible CD-roms. I guess that counts as 'technology', but the whole "thrift up your setup" thing just doesn't seem reasonably probable these days.

This is a basement, in an older house (no newer than 1975, if I had to make a guess). Light mildew smell, along with the old paper smell of cardboard boxes with dead relatives documents and things sitting on shelves to be gone through someday (the funeral was in 1988). Guarantee there's a box with 78rpm records and super8 films. There's also a smell of old gun oil and cosmoline from the shooting irons in the closet, assuming they're real steel and not airshit. On top of the expected smells you wanna make fun of OP for.

It's not only placement, all of you have shitty $20 speakers. It's not even a Battlestation, it's a pathetic piece of shit. But also, the placement is horrible for listening. The 4080 shouldn't struggle with 5120x1440 games you have something else going on. I used to game with a 2080 super in that resolution and now I use a 5080 for 7680x2160 with no issues. You should switch the screen positions though, that's dumb as hell for a curved screen.

It's great for productivity and media basically like having two monitors in one, gaming is where it can get a little iffy but the games that support UWHD actually look amazing. Issue is really just size and mounting it alone is a hassle (need an arm that can hold 49in + 43-44 lbs) but because of the curve, it's a perfect viewing angle at all angles. Comfy cockpit feel for sure.
>>109355977
I just swing my FoV with my eyes up and down, and then left and right on the top. Not a huge issue for me, but I see what you mean.
>>109355990
I just want a more manageable sized single screen on the bottom for gaming. I guess if I upgrade my GPU or find out what the bottleneck is, I could just swap the big monitor down and put the small one up top and game up there. I just like the top monitor to be secondary and bottom primary so active gaming I would always want on the more natural direct in front, and I can glance up when I want to look at something.

Thanks for the suggestions, it's gonna be fun swapping the monitors around.

What kind of places do you actually go to that allow you to sift through stuff? I tried some places, but either it's a no-picking recycle center or is highly restricted otherwise. It seems like if they let you in, it's off-the-books kind of shit. I wanted to try a local neighboring city's monthly recycling event, but it was listed as for exclusively members of that city. Unless you're visiting the dump and have an in-guy who'll let you in, I don't see how I'm getting much.

Man, that's nice too. I've heard the DiamondTrons in Iiyama's Pro series monitors have great color saturation too, on top of some of the crazy high scan ranges.
>officially its not allowed anywhere.
Yeah, that's why it's seemed really difficult to get into. Basically an irl CHA stat check. I hear some people even resort to bribing workers to let them in or keep an eye out and message them about recent drop-offs. I think that's what a lot of the flippers are doing nowadays, with there being more people flipping them with zero idea about them than actual normal owners. I'm not really sure if I should try looking at 'transfer stations' or some other kind of e-waste facility, nor if I should bother calling first or not considering the regulations behind everything. Do you have any advice in this regard?

Diamondtrons are the absolute peak CRT technology had to offer in terms of sharpness and brightness.
Trinitron is close, but they have so many issues (every single high end curved trinitron is dying from faulty ICs) and you have to use annoying 20 year old software to calibrate them
If you are in the US its possible to find ewaste centers that allow you to take, if europe best chance is taking some scrap to drop off and taking a CRT when no ones looking
And definetely look at local listings every now and again, found so much cool gear from old people getting rid of it for a few euros
The difficulty also heavily depends on how poor the area you live in was in the 90/2000s, richer areas will have alot more high end sets obviously while in poor countries finding any half decent CRT can be a problem
>>
>>109360085
>Diamondtrons are the absolute peak CRT technology had to offer in terms of sharpness and brightness.
I've heard great things. Besides Iiyama, I know Mitsubishi had a few really good tubes across several brands. It'd be so sexy to have a dark NEC-branded one on my desk. Surely less of a pain in the ass to deal with calibrating them than having to use WinDAS on Trinitrons at least.
>If you are in the US its possible to find ewaste centers that allow you to take
The weekend is coming up, so I'll just have to give it another go.
>And definetely look at local listings every now and again
I do check regularly, but I think demand has been rising steadily. So, even though I live in a relatively good area, stuff goes fast and quickly flipped even on the same day. I think e-waste centers may be more promising...if they'll let me in.

In any case, thanks for the cool discussion and neat pictures. It's fun talking to someone who's really into this stuff. I'll post a picture in one of these threads if I find anything. Wish me luck!

I am a computer audiophile, but to be perfectly fair, a lot of people especially gamers are using headphones and the speakers are just there to make email dings and system sounds if they aren't sitting at the computer with headphones on. You also kinda have to choose between decent speakers and comfortable side monitors unless you get creative.
>>
>>109363370
Yeah headphones suck, gaming with an awesome sound system is better. Same as you would have for your TV. Like, play games with a proper speaker sized in a decent position and good subwoofer then put on your headphones, it's like using a toddler toy. You don't need to choose between anything at all, you just buy good speakers and place them in the correct spot.
>>
>>109363405
I prefer speakers too and use them most of the time. I have decent speakers and subwoofers at my desk, in my bedroom, at my TV, and in my cars. But sometimes headphones are indicated, especially if you're playing online games with voice communication. That is the main use case for some people. I DO have to choose between using my speakers and being sociable sometimes.
>>
>>109363473
>specially if you're playing online games with voice communication
I still prefer a proper condenser mic going into my interface. In fact, that's another issue I hate with headphones. Everyone refuses to use push to talk because of them and you hear all kinds of stupid shit while gaming with people I don't want to hear. A desktop mic sounds better and is best used with PTT.

People used to use headsets when gaming because it was the only option, but now that we have cheap interfaces and they have good pre amps built in it's crazy to not just not get the best of both worlds. Like, I honestly find it hilarious when I see someone with a overpowered PC then they slack in other departments, desk, chair, audio, etc. either go all out of stay within an equal budget for everything.
>>
Even cheap headsets mog speakers, especially for le gayming. Enjoy the music, hear footsteps and moar.
>>
>>109363555
False.
>>
>>109363588
he's actually right about the gaming part, but that's it.
>>
>>109363537
Personally I use 1DD IEMs and a basic USB desktop mic when chatting. I think the mic quality is less important than having a good acoustic environment and good etiquette. I'm not recording an album, it's just voice chat.

I will say the absolute worst, most annoying audio I've heard on VC was people badly using omnidirectional condenser mics with poor etiquette. You can pick up a lot more shitty noises with that than with a low sensitivity directional headset mic.

>>109363555
It is much more expensive to get a good speaker setup and that includes having a good acoustic environment to use them in. For a lot of people in a lot of situations, headphones/earphones are really the best option. Even then, the quality in terms of raw signal to noise ratio, distortion, etc of an affordable IEM setup cannot be beat by speakers at any price. So that's a legitimate preference that I'm not going to argue with.

I like my speaker setup, I find it more immersive and I like to be able to feel the bass. They are much easier to calibrate and ear cup / ear canal resonances are not a factor. I wouldn't want to use earphones or headphones for an extended period unless I've had hours to painstakingly equalize them, and it is always necessary because everyone has their own ear canal resonance.

You only think this because you've never used properly set up speakers in a well treated room. Sure if your $20 logitech desk speakers in your bedroom are going against a headset then a headset is fine.

>>109363623
Nope, not even close. It's not exactly going to be any worse, but the best thing for gaming is really ear training which has nothing to do with speakers or headphones. With speakers and a sub you're actually going to experience gunshots and explosions, etc. way more vibrantly than through headphones though so in terms of enjoyment speakers win as always,
>>
>>109363703
Have things you enjoy and like and purchase things relating to it to place in your room. It's pretty simple.

nah, you're retarded. it's not about dynamics it's about spatial awareness. a driver per ear in a neutral position has been shown to outperform every other setup (incl. 7.1 surround speakers) in terms of being able to identify the direction of sounds in a game.
>>
>>109363623

Thank you for your kind reply, to my rather provocative statement. My headphones are really important, not only can I enjoy decent sound, but they also protect me from the screaming and fighting from my parents.
>I find it more immersive and I like to be able to feel the bass.
I bet that must feel great, but such a setup is not feasible at the moment.
>>109363642

>>109363727
>You only think this because you've never used properly set up speakers
definitely
>>
>>109363789
I'm not retarded at all. If you're sitting in between 2 speakers correctly set up at proper level and distance it's going to sound better than headphones and have the same clarity for your ears. 7.1 setups are pointless except for movies so it's pointless to bring that up and the fact that you did in reference to your argument shows you have no idea what you're talking about. Go kick rocks kid.
>>
>>109363813
you are retarded
sounding better is not the point of headphones in multiplayer games
the point is being able to directionally locate your enemies. speakers are dogshit for this.
>>
>>109363824
Which as I stated has nothing to do with headphones vs speakers and is more ear training you fucking idiot. You only think this because you're a child who watches streamers and esports bullshit and don't actually do anything for yourself or can afford to. Obviously if you're sitting at essentially a LAN competitively everyone is going to wear headphones, how the fuck would you properly setup speakers for everyone without isolation rooms.

This is like the retarded argument kids have that 4k, hdr, rtx, etc. doesn't matter. It's like, yeah, of course you think that, because you've never experienced the other properly. Because you're a poor fucking retarded kid in your parents basement or you just moved out into the world and can't afford shit.

I'll never understand the zoomer phenomenon of bitching and arguing about stuff you guys never experienced or understand with such confidence. Quit ruining the internet and fuck off.
>>
>>109363860
no, this is not an issue of ear training you blithering retard. it's literally the position and proximity of the drivers to your skull. two front facing speaker will always image as audio ahead of you. no "ear training" will correct for this, and even minute changes in the position of your head will completely skew your positional awareness. I played CS 1.6 on release, and this has never changed.

If you want to play with speakers and you have a vehicle, you might try getting into car audio. That can be a lot of effort, and at least some expense, but it's not too bad of a hobby. You're free to make as much noise as you want on the highway.

>>109363727
Just for localization of sounds with HRTF vs. speakers, even surround sound, I think earphones have an advantage because the complete lack of reflections.
>>
>>109363989
With 100 bucks you should get something used in your local area. There is nothing you can buy new for that price that beats a pair of used KEF or Polk speakers that sold originally for $500. If you're lucky and persistent you could get speakers and an amp, maybe even a basic sub, for $100.
>>
>>109364146
Yes, speakers should be properly setup and that includes handling reflections and diffusion for a room. My point and argument is not against half assed measures. People accept headphones because they are cheap and easy, not because they are the best. Anyways this all stemmed from people having $20 10-20 year old speakers on their desks in terrible positions and that's just the worst and most pointless thing you could do. Might as well have no speakers and extra desk space.
>>
>>109364173
>There is nothing you can buy new for that price that beats a pair of used KEF or Polk speakers that sold originally for $500. If you're lucky and persistent you could get speakers and an amp, maybe even a basic sub, for $100.
maybe 10 years ago, but at this price range you will get shit tier quality when an amp is required in the equation. you aren't finding good polks or even KEFs at that price range except maybe a polk center speaker no one wants.
>>
>>109364196
Headphones are absolutely the best for positional audio. "Ear Training" cannot beat drivers inches from your ears, that maintain a consistent orientation regardless of you head position and posture. Human sound localization is accurate to <5 degrees, and it takes very little to get the geometry of your setup outside of that tolerance (deep breath or glance at screen edge is more than enough). The best ranked players use headphones and IEMs even for quiet environments like home use.
>>
>>109364210
It maybe depends on your area and how persistently you search. Just a few months ago, I got a set of KEF speakers about 15 years old, in seemingly perfect condition, for $40 each. They are installed in my car now.

>They are installed in my car now.
you mean you ripped drivers out of tuned enclosures and just jammed them in your parcel shelf or something?
this sounds pretty stupid
>>
>>109364264
No, and what gave you that idea? Just assuming I do a bad job, what's with that? Does it not seem like I know what I'm talking about from my other posts? They are installed properly in pods in the corner of the dash and A pillars. What's more, the mid woofers are installed in enclosures behind the dash which I had to completely strip. This was a serious installation to get the best front stage possible in a car. If I were to post pictures of it I would be doxxing myself.
By the way, these particular KEFs had the rubber surround and aluminum woofer, so they probably will survive the automotive environment. I had reasons for choosing the particular model I did and was lucky to find them so cheap actually.
It's a little odd to take drivers from home speakers to put them in a car, but it's not that easy to find other good coaxial mid/hi drivers. I mean, in a better world, that would be the standard format because you sit so close to the speakers in a car.
>>
>>109364280
>If I were to post pictures of it I would be doxxing myself.
ah, so another work of creative fictionâ„¢
>Does it not seem like I know what I'm talking about from my other posts?
no, you pretty clearly looked like you were out of your depth when you thought that speakers with inevitable crosstalk and reflections (you aren't gaming in an anechoic chamber, even with the best wall treatments and a bespoke room) could compete with headphones or IEMs in terms of angular resolution, positional (mainly center and rear imaging) and binaural cues.
>>
>>109364305
I don't know why you're confusing me with the anti headphone guy. In the last post that mentioned car audio, I said earphones had the advantage even over surround speakers for localization.

>I don't know why you're confusing me with the anti headphone guy

>>
>>109364348
idk man making custom pods is one of the main skills involved in car audio installation. If you goto a meetup you'll see quite a lot of that. It's easier with 3D scanning and printers these days but people have been doing it with wood and/or fiberglass for decades before that.

There is no pink, it's purple and blues. The main light is usually green(you can see it on the ceiling) but I had to turn the front ones off to get a good picture. Normal lighting behind my desk (which sometimes I make like an icy light blue) then the neon signs are red and orange. I have it on a cycling pattern and for some reason the phone camera just blurs it into a new pinkish color more than the purple or blue, regardless of iso/shutter. I also sometimes just have everything as a warm light and sometimes change the colors. I find this mixture of everything to be the most optimal though. My companion room has no lighting at all except the soffits I installed when I built it.

It is quite a tough market. I currently use a 32" 144Hz 3840x2160p LCD display for reference, but even if I use BFI, the perception of motion persistence really bothers me. Rather than just nostalgia from when I was a kid, I've wanted a CRT monitor because even OLEDs rely on sample-and-hold technology that will continue to exhibit this issue. I know OLEDs may exhibit it slightly less, but that is still largely dependent on maintaining very high frame rates, which is often a challenge these days.
>dont worry your not missing out on anything
I thought about OLEDs before, but since they're sample-and-hold too, and didn't have RGB stripe subpixel arrangements until just recently, I didn't want to commit to it. Some of the newer ultrawides like Asus' XG34WCDMS look cool. All the modern features and benefits aren't lost on me, but it all comes back to that issue of motion clarity for me, and that's why it sucks to be in this situation, you know?

It's frustrating, but I may have to accept the current state of affairs. According to CamelCamelCamel, that monitor I listed hit $650 new like a month ago (despite releasing pretty recently), so maybe I could get one pretty cheap during Black Friday. Idk.

Relieve me of my IKEA Renberget 1897667-1, I beg you. I've been using it for over a decade now, I think. I hate faux leather so much, it cooks you. And it's not that comfortable either.

Is there anything better I can get for $100-$200 these days, be it new or used from the office?

your primary monitor is a joke that was marketed to poor retards too stupid to buy a proper 16:9 display back when they were more expensive for a larger 16:9, 4k, 144hz+ OLED display. They are so cheap now there is no reason to ever get an ultrawide of any kind. Now you're stuck with a joke display that doesn't properly support 99.99% of all media ever made. All this effort; nice speakers, a good chair, a proper man sized desk and the PRIMARY DISPLAY is an absolute joke. Utter fail.

Speakers are setup properly but no room treatment.
>>
>>109387169
What is you talkin about? My display's purpose is to replace having 3 individual monitors with 1 bezelless monitor and it does that amazingly. It also is used for tracking audio which no other screen type does as well. I'm not a 12 year old anon, I watch TV in my theater room with a proper display and speakers. I watch youtube, hockey, and maybe some tv shows on plex in their proper format perfectly fine on the right side of this screen while doing stuff in the middle of the screen. Also most games these days support 7680x2160, 5120x1440, etc. so I have no issues there if I want to game in fullscreen although typically I game windowed as it's the best way to do everything. Also when I'm not doing stuff in a DAW and working and I'm doing stuff in Blender or Godot it's also fantastic to have all this screen real estate. My computer isn't for watching movies like a teenager.

>>109387275
I am not taking the time to iron flags lmao, I don't give a shit, the room is going to be covered in flags and shit probably one day those have been stretched on the walls for years. Also I don't really show off the space, it's a companion space to the main space the only people that enter that room are acoustic instrumentalists, drummers, and vocalists. It's just a sound proof live room anon.

Things are in fact not wireless yes.
>wall is empty as fuck and gray
It's a basement, behind me are 12 trees with about 2600 watts of grow lights, I'm honestly more concerned with the light damaging things on the wall and my monitor.
>shit ass kitchen chair for the desk and it doesn't even match the wood color of everything else in the room
It is infact from the kitchen, we had to take all the chairs from upstairs away because the twins are now able to drag them around and use them to climb on things.
>weird ass coffee table on the side holding things strewn about
The PC is over 100 lbs and the amplifier is about 50 pounds, I needed something sturdy and underneath is my electric ignition system for professional fireworks.
>mic sideways on the table and not on some sort of stand.
It's on a stand, if I use it I'll put it up otherwise it's best to avoid making more things tempting to push over while I have a toddler in my lap.
>Speakers are setup properly but no room treatment.
The trees work fine for that as do the lights hanging from the ceiling, however because of said trees there are no good places for the subwoofers to go.
I'm surprised you didn't notice and complain about having two keyboards
>>
>>109388490
>Things are in fact not wireless yes.
Things aren't wireless but you can run wires better.
>It's a basement, behind me are 12 trees with about 2600 watts of grow lights, I'm honestly more concerned with the light damaging things on the wall and my monitor.
No excuse, you don't stare out the back of your head. Having a bland wall in front of you is bad and it doesn't matter if it's a basement that's meaningless for decor.
>It is infact from the kitchen, we had to take all the chairs from upstairs away because the twins are now able to drag them around and use them to climb on things.
Parent better.
>The PC is over 100 lbs and the amplifier is about 50 pounds, I needed something sturdy and underneath is my electric ignition system for professional fireworks.
I know, I have that same lian li case for my plex server for maximum drive storage. You could still do better with it's placement the old coffee table looks bad.
>It's on a stand, if I use it I'll put it up otherwise it's best to avoid making more things tempting to push over while I have a toddler in my lap.

>The trees work fine for that as do the lights hanging from the ceiling, however because of said trees there are no good places for the subwoofers to go.

>I'm surprised you didn't notice and complain about having two keyboards

>>

Oh and I left out, the sub just goes under your desk and put bass traps in your corners.
>>
>>109387210
>no numpad
there is numpad
>single, small display
eh it's 27 inches. rather normal
i had multiple monitors. the way i use a computer at home doesn't benefit from it, so i went back to only one. with my desk depth it's also not really too comfortable.
>more space for shit on display than utility/computer
shelves above the desk were added mostly for decoration, to not have blank wall there.
i have other places to actuallty store things (like these 2 alex drawers for example)
>Your desk is extremely shallow
i'd like it to be like 20 cm deeper, but this room limits me somewhat
>I don't see a subwoofer
it's in the living room with my audio setup
>so why pretend you care about sound with your little speaker stands?
stands were more about having these speakers in somewhat permanent position instead of moving around the desk and saving space on desk itself.
>>
>>109388598
Removing things that are tempting to knock over or that can be used to climb is considered good parenting.
Light bleaching things on the walls/room is a real thing so I don't see the point of putting things around just to destroy them by having grow lights on 18 hours a day.
12 fruit trees are fine room treatment, there is a lot of foliage and fruit to disperse sound.
Subwoofers don't go under desks and mine are too large to even be placed under them.
>>
>>109386807

You can easily parent without the kid being in range of knocking shit over. It's bad parenting having that excuse. Put the grow lights in an enclosure so it doesn't leak the light or get frames that are UV resistant or buy things that you don't care about getting UV rays it's not hard.

Room treatment as in sound treatment you dingus. Trees don't fucking do anything for reflections and shit which is your actual issue especially with a sub. Sure maybe diffusion but hardly, otherwise tons of studios would use foliage lmao. Subwoofers absolutely go under desks with traps in corners. There's no way your sub is bigger than your desk lmao. That would make it over 30" tall.
>>
>>109389211
Do you have children much less twin toddlers?
You're right, I could put them in grow tents but I don't want to, I am happy with them where they are especially when they are on 12/12 for flowering and fruiting as they smell and look lovely.
Most people don't have an indoor fruit orchard to try, there are literally hundreds of pounds of leaves and branches to help diffuse mid range and higher frequency sounds.
I rarely use the subs so I don't care about having bass traps in the corners that books cases don't occupy.
https://www.svsound.com/products/pb17-ultra-revolution-subwoofer
I cannot physically fit two of these under my desk nor do I want to, subwoofers are not meant to have placement like that anyway.

>Do you have children much less twin toddlers? No I'm not retarded enough to bring a child into this shit world at the moment and will wait until things get better or won't at all. Your trees are dumb and don't do shit for sound. Also two sub woofers is fucking retarded why the fuck do you have 2 subwoofers for a total of $5k that aren't being used? Just sell one and buy room treatment and one is only 21" tall it fits under the desk literally just fine.
