i aint sourcing u shit. fuck apple.

also the anon who says macbooks cant game is wrong. they can play hundreds of games. but apple doesnt want you to so you still cant. so you're kinda right too.

but yeah are macbooks good? if you can snag one of the new airs on sale for $800 or $900 maybe. but those are trash for gaming because no fans. but they can play indies n shit.

so apple is a meme? overwhelmingly yes. only redditors and discord users will defend apple. even people who own apple products hate apple.

they are student and "work" laptops. while you can technically use them for more you're asking for a bad time. essentially, apple silicon does some insane lifting and they unironically do not need fans. you know, until you start doing actual computer stuff.

i will admit apple silicon is revolutionary. but every other company will just invent their own silicon that is not apple trash. hopefully.

Howdy folks. I found this XFX 9070 XT for sale. I managed to convince this broad to sell it for $450. Is it worth it? Never bought a used GPU before but im stuck with a 9060 XT 16 gb and feel this wont be enough power to last me until the PS6 generation. I heard the XFX cards have coil whine and poor cooling, is that true? If so, should I just pay $750 for a Powercolor hellhound since I heard its the best 9070 XT card?

Im on Linux btw so KikVdia is out of the question.

This is more than enough VRAM and the 9070xt is also 16gb. The not-so-obvious baseline for playing games on linux are steam machine and steam deck hardware stats and they're far below modern hardware today. You're wasting your money. If that 9070xt had 24-32gb of VRAM I would take it. Never buy a lower VRAM gpu compared to your current gpu, especially in this age of stagnation.

idk all the charts show a pretty significant jump in performance from the 9060 XT to the 9070 XT. But, I get what you mean. I dont even play AAA slop, the most modern game I own is Batman Arkham Knight. I mainly emulate retro games and have a lot of fun.

I guess Im just afraid of my GPU dying 1 day and having to shell out $1000+ for a 5070/9070 equivalent in the near future once they jack up the prices. In this age of PC price uncertainty, I mainly wanna hoard hardware and have spare parts. I already bought tons of SSDs and HDDS late last year in anticipation of price hikes and im glad I did.

>>109386138
Damn are Nvidia cards really that inconsistent? I bought a 5070 TI MSI Gaming Trio on black Friday for cheap just to hoard it, but its still sitting new in plastic. Lowkey thinking of selling it and using the funds towards a 5080 but doubt its worth the hassle.

Do SATA SSDs have any real differences in speed like NVMes do between generations and sometimes the super fast ones vs. regular speed, or are they all pretty much capped by the 6Gb/s cable? I'm wondering if I need to think about any other factors other than size when getting one to use for video clip archive / backups.

>a pretty significant jump in performance from the 9060 XT to the 9070 XT
Still not worth it. If you're going to benchmark, benchmark games you actually play, and you said you don't bother with AAA slop either. That 9060xt is plenty good enough, upgrade to the next generation with a wider bus and more VRAM when it comes out.
>backup GPU
Then I suppose you have a reason to buy, but I'd rather buy new myself for peace of mind. You'd better not be hoarding mindlessly like an idiot.

>>
>>109386438
K. I guess I'd have to worry about speed if I was going for a phsyical hard drive but I think SSDs are fine for long-term storage at this point. What's the DRAM even do for it?
>>
>>109386443
I think your right.

I also think I'm hoarding mindlessly like an idiot. Fucking RDNA5 better be good. I want 24gb of VRAM minimum to flex on negros.
>>
>Kill jew

>>
>>109386472
>What's the DRAM even do for it?
speeds up data access, reduces wear where your data lives.
imagine both are OS drives, you click on something on your desktop. the one with dram can process the request on its own immediately, the dramless has to interrupt the cpu to poll your system memory so its a bit slower but if your cpu/ram is already fast you wont notice it.
>>
>>109386581

Not going to happen. The material logistics bottleneck as well as the "demand" from data centers is going to keep prices up for a long time. Valve was the canary in the coal mine when they raised steam deck prices. Yes, it's unfortunately true.
ASRock boards seem to have a higher rate of reported Ryzen CPU failures compared to other AIBs'.
X870E Nova's discounted to $230 in the US; it's great value spec-wise, but you have to accept the higher risk.
I think ASRock trusted AMD's reference specs too much compared to other AIBs.

A significant number of enthusiasts/hardware OCers default to ASUS ROG boards because of their Silicon Prediction (SP) algorithm (+ some hardware & sensor features).
These are the kind of people who are willing push voltages near/over the edge even if it means they'll need to buy another CPU.

they like easy things.
setting memory speed and timings was a bad thing until it became easy in the form of xmp.
setting tertiary timings will become good when amd's expo+ whatever gets to be more mainstream making it easy but they wont go further than the one setting of course.
now is a little different because xmp is bad again because nobody can afford better than really bad xmp bins so you would have to set them yourself which is hard.
the cope is phantom degradation that will never be observed ever but, you know, what if i guess.

>>
>>109392109
Overclocking memory has never been that great of an idea, unless you're trying to get competitive benchmark results on OC leaderboards. You're basically just risking instability for a performance upgrade that rarely shows up outside of benchmarks. If you're gonna risk instability anyway, you might as well do your memory clocks and timings manually. That way you can fine tune it to perform better than stock even without increasing voltages at all which in turn reduces the risk of stability issues later on.

>>109392264
It's not the TDP, you can have 200W TDP and never have any degradation if your voltages are low and the chip is big enough not to cook at 100C from that. Degradation in ICs is caused by higher than normal voltages.

TOP KEK!!! Even the AI disses the AI-GPU. You really need to be retarded to buy it.

Yes that would be considered a memory overclock and I don't know. JEDEC profiles are the non-OC profiles for RAM but my memory modules for example do not have a JEDEC profile for anything above 4800 MT/s and that's dumb since you can easily run 5600MT/s on AM5 using (near?) stock voltages. I had to manually set up my RAM to run 5600MT/s with timings and all to avoid the nasty EXPO profiles.
There was a 5600MT/s EXPO profile which wasn't too bad, but it was still unusually high voltages for some things. Like why do I need my memory voltage to be more than 1.2V?

Found 9070xt for pretty close price price as 5070. Definitely better choice. Thanks anon
>>
>>109392457
which 9070XT?
If it is anything but XFX Swift / Quicksilver you're good to go. Those two cards have 47db fans.
Other 9070XTs have 29-35db fans.

Of course I have it turned on, that's why I bought it, but now reading about degradation it made me confus.

AM5, it was a bit funky when setting it up initially but I've had it for 3+ years at this point
I've just let chkdsk etc. go to work a bit for now and will wait to see if that did anything
hadn't really changed anything recently but it became a bit more unstable, I feel like it must have been some fucked update to something if it wasn't my bro bumping into my PC which I do not think happened
>>109392365
it's not happening under load (or rather that's not what's causing it)
either way I hope the little bit of disk repairing was enough though I seriously doubt it

CPU degradation issues are reported for all manufacturers.
I run a PBOed 9950X3D in an AsRock X870E Nova WiFi for quite a while now and I have never had any issues.
It's just like it was with Covid: if a risk is way under 1% it doesn't matter the fuck if you double it. So even if AsRock had two times the burn risk of Asus it wouldn't make a significant difference.
>>
>>109392858
because tvs are pc displays now a days too
tvs already offer 288hz modes unc
240hz native panels are coming next probably, 120hz panels pushing 165hz non natively and fucking up processing and colors due to them being shit
doubling the hz makes sense when they fiux their processing garbage and native panels
maybe
depneds how long they wanna sandbag it
165hz is the standard now
going up

Im late but it looks perfectly fine.
Dont bite for the 9800x3d if you are already working on a budget, its literally not worth it and also boosts a concerning rate of failure. It runs a bit colder tho
The 5070 is the only controversial point (as other anons have pointed) its a fantastic card and it got an smaller price increase when compared to the 16gb vram cards which makes it more appealing.
If you can find the extra 70-80 i would pick a 9070xt over it but thats it, im not picking a 9060 (xt or not) for the extra 4gb of vram
Its just a solid build, it just shows that you are working within a budget, it is what it is
>>
>>109392445
Its crazy how this board changed its mind on the 5080
Not a year ago every post about the 5080 would mention it wasn't worth it paying the extra 300-400 over the 5070TI
Now both cards are 150-200$ more expensive so i guess these 300-400 arent as much of a difference (relatively) and you see a lot of people praising the 5080
>>
>>109393243
be Quiet! coolers aren't the best @ AMD CPU cooling, their cold plate design seem optimized for Intel CPUs.
I wouldn't buy the Dark Rock Elite & Pro 5 unless you want to pay the brand/design premium.
Pure Rock 3 Pro is frequently discounted in the US, plus they have better fans than Thermalright or other cheaper coolers.
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/be-quiet-pure-rock-pro-3-cpu-air-cooler/7.html

>do you think Red Devil could fit in that setup
I don't think so, Red Devil is one of the largest 9070 XT models (352mm*149mm*69mm(with bracket)).
You'll want to verify clearance with anyone who has that exact case and GPU combo, do some online research.
>>
>>109393484
the thread's probably invaded by 5080 buyers
it's still a shit card tbqh, 378mm2 midrange die (slight smaller than ad103) that's marketed and sold as a highend gpu
>>
>>109393453
>165hz is the standard now

>>109393484
Most of the 5080 hate came from YouTubers who got one for free, compared it to the unobtainable 4080 which they got for free and completely ignored the RRP of the 5080 was $200 cheaper.
They also compared it to the 5070Ti and claimed it was a minor uplift, but intentionally only compared raster scores.

When the 5080 dipped to MSRP (or below) last year a lot of people bought them because it's just a good card at a price people are okay with paying.

Probably wouldn't recommend one with the price increases though, desu.

>>109393564
on tvs*
with pc use*
the tvs are still natively built for 120 and cause various errors by pushing over 120
thats why maybe next gen of tvs will have native 240hz panels with hdmi2.2
