Depends upon the organization. My helpdesk deals with Active Directory, Account Management, & basic troubleshooting where possible. Everything else is made into a ticket and sent back. Hence why most are getting 60k a year due to that being the floor for IT jobs. Most never worked at a PC repair place or Geeksquad equivalent so this is their first job in the industry. It's basically what happened with easy to obtain hardware for CNC machines. Cheaper software, hardware and a glut of ME/EE/CE allowed for distributed manufacturing that traditionally required hundreds if not thousands of cooped up labor in large companies to complete.

What larger corps should be doing is doubling down on the productivity gains and hire more to corner more of the market/fix what they have that makes them money. However naively they decided to cut manpower to scoop up a bunch of money for themselves.

I think their idea is that once the dust settles, almost all software engineering will be "solvable" by throwing compute and data at it. Larger companies will easily outcompete smaller ones at that, not in every niche or application, but certainly in most "standard" ones around today.

Its really situation dependent. I work at a do nothing job that isn't remote so i have to compensate with my lack of work for something. Even reading random books is better than just rotting. If your current role is engaging and teaching you alot then the most i can recommend is spreading your wings abit with more responsibilities so you can tack it on your resume. I did that to great success even if it meant me being whooped at the end of the day.

On my initial talk with the hiring manager who is a senior level software engineer, I asked them what style/format their technical interview consists of. The hiring manager told me the technical screening will be a question to see “how you work with repository, it won’t be a leetcode question”.

I was moved onto the final round and just had my 6 hour onsite with back to back interviews. Did pretty well on the systems design interview and then the technical interview comes. Before the interview, I am reviewing all the possible Git commands and any github things I should know. The technical interview starts and it’s a leetcode medium level question simply hosted on a github repository. That is all the repository was used for, to host the question. I asked the interviewer who is a different software engineer if they want me to do anything with the repository and they told me nope, just do the question on an IDE of your choice. I was in the habit of doing 1-2 leetcode questions a day prior to this interview and stopped a week out to focus for this interview. When I realized what happened, it threw me off and also not having practiced for the last week with leetcode style questions, I basically spent the first 5 minutes just trying to adjust and focus on the question and before you know it, time is up. This was my most interesting technical interview.

My company had an "incident" and decided to reset everyone's passwords and told our thousands of users to call the IT helpdesk to get them reset, now, since Monday, every single user and their managers have been freaking out because everyone's in the same boat and everyone is high priority to get this sorted out so all of the IT staff has been on nonstop calls verifying user info to get back in. I have directors giving out my cell phone to random losers to get in, one guy texted me part of his social.
