What will happen if I raise my swap file from 2GB to 16GB or so?Is there a reason why the devs keep it that low by default? Lately my laptop has been freezing like crazy (16GB of RAM)

What OS are you using?Some people think it is best to move away from using swap as there are options like zram that can work to help with memory pressure instead.The "swap must equal physical memory" mantra is only for if you want to be able to use hibernation.As far as "what will happen", you will lose 14GB of storage, gain 14GB of swap, meaning you will have more space after zram starts using disk (because you probably already have zram on by default these days) and before the memory manager starts killing processes, although also, systemd will probably start killing processes before that anyway.You should confirm your laptop is actually freezing because it is running out of swap anyway. What you would probably be seeing in that case is just programs being killed and crashing, not freezing. Freezing could be because programs are starting to use swap (because it's slow), meaning you should diagnose and reduce your memory pressure.

so what's happening is that every time I code something wrong or I open too many tabs, my laptop goes extremely slow. If I move my mouse, it takes several minutes for it to register in the screen. This is the swap file's fault and you can't convince me otherwise

>>109419295Maybe he's referring to Windows, which has a feature to allow the OS to automatically handle the size of the page file. On my main Windows desktop I have that feature enabled and Windows chose to use 4GB for the page file, with the system having 64GB RAM.
