Greetings friends. I work at a hotel and have no affiliation with anything tech related. My childhood friend got a mortgage recently, I would say right before the huge layoffs and AI boom. I tried giving him friendly advise that it might not be the best idea but he didn't listen. He's been looking for an UI / UX job for the last 8-9 months with no luck. He's at a senior level with a lot of projects to showcase. What type of advice should I give him? Are any of you hiring a senior UX designer? Is it completely over for him? I don't want him to go into foreclosure
>>
>>109425581
he should develop a good working portable windows-like gui for Linux and make it open source. Make it good. Make it non-shitty. Cinnamon and KDE Plasma are ok at best, but this needs to be as stable as actual Windows.

I'm going to watch a couple videos on dynamic programming this weekend. And hype myself up to get back on the leetcode grind so I can get a new job some time

Anyone seen/read any good system design content lately?

At our company we devs are supposed to eventually do all the UX and UI design ourselves with AI.

>finally move to the most modern client using nextjs, ts and all that shit

How are you even supposed to learn something while doing this?
I remember I had no trouble learning react, vue or svelte because I was comfortable with js because I had lots of practice, but I seriously doubt I'm learning shit just using AI.

How do I make more money as a SWE? I'm stuck in a job that pays just under $100k and it's a small barely profitable company with tight budgets so I know I'm never going to get a raise here. The one positive is that there are no jeets and all of my coworkers are white men.
>>
>>109428139
Amazon but it ain't fucking chill. Also you really should learn server shit in lieu of programming since you are really dealing with the entire stack.
>>
>>109428143
FAGMAN is not for me. I'm not smart enough to solve hard leetcode problems on my own and I don't have the lack of morals required to cheat to get the job. I imagine if I did though, most of my coworkers would be jeets who cheat and lie about everything.
>>
>>109428159
Its a 5 stage interview process they will rack and stack your skill set out to either section. Its easier to do bulk interviews like that at amazon than it is to roll the dice on every specific role.

You can do it Amazon has a crazy churn rate. At least double what your making.
>>
>>109428222
>Its a 5 stage interview process they will rack and stack your skill set out to either section.
What does this sentence even mean? I know for a fact that if you can't solve hard leetcodes (or cheat) you're never getting hired at any large tech company.
>>
>>109428248
It means if you are barebones leet code medium tard with only frontend experience and nothing else they will still hire you. If you have more experience they will hire you for a different position. 5 stage interview rack and stack means its a giant filter for positions.

I could probably solve medium leetcodes but I'd have to spend a significant amount of time studying and re-learning DSA. I'm like 15 years (with a few multi year breaks in between) into my career at this point and I've never had to do anything resembling leetcode at any job I've ever had.

And yeah frontend is most of what I've done in my career, which I personally think is a more valuable skill than ever today with the barely working unmaintainable spaghetti code everyone is shitting out with AI now, but I know most people don't agree and see frontend as a worthless skill now. So I know my future career prospects are looking grim.

amazon asks ridiculously hard leetcode questions that less than 0.5% of people could solve in their OAs. you literally need to cheat to get in.

When you're driving on a road where one lane needs to merge into the other, and traffic is bumper to bumper, in the lane that goes straight, but in the merge lane that's empty, people are being assholes and just driving up to where the front of the merge is. Why do you, in that scenario, why do you let people who are being assholes not queuing and just going to the front of the merge into the merge lane? That's something I'll never understand, so I want to understand.

Yeah the term for this is 'elite overproduction'. When a society produces way too many people with bachelors/masters/PhDs while the number of jobs requiring those credentials largely stays flat.
It's a major cause of revolutions, since you get tons of over-educated people who are under-employed and want to rip the system down. You can see it starting in places like NYC, etc.

amazon is by far the worst company to "interview" with, they treat you like a nigger.
my experiences have been so far:
>submit resume, either 1-4 weeks to hear back or 1 day to 3 months to get rejected
>recruiter doesn't even contact you, they just send you an OA link

OA 1:
>leetcode medium-hard, greedy solution, only passed 12/15 cases (rest TLE'd)
>leetcode hard, prefix sums + top down dp:
>you have 1 to 2^n servers, some of these servers can contain secret files in secrets: Vector<Int>, the formula for the cost of the servers is p if servers i...j do not contain secret files. if they contain secret files the cost is k * u, where k is the number of files contained in i...j and u is the secret files cost. If i...j is even, you can split the array in two and calculate the costs of each half, then add them up. Return the minimum cost to store all servers.
Couldn't even pass a single test case, this was months ago before I started really going hard into leetcode. The question isn't crazy but why the fuck are they asking this for a role where 90% of my work will be framework slop? I've never had to touch DP in any project I've ever made.
>rejected

OA 2:
>leetcode ultra hard (pic related), could only pass 8/15 test cases with a brute force solution https://leetcode.com/problems/sum-of-total-strength-of-wizards/description/
>AI "bugfixing" round, except you have to choose 1 of 4 languages, none of which I actively use. I chose python (django), solved 5/6 bugs.
>also the AI won't tell you where the bugs are, what the bugs are, or generate code, I spent 15 minutes fighting with the AI trying to figure out what it actually could do (all it can do is read the failing test cases, tell you what function is failing, and generate "generic" code)
>rejected

and from what I've heard, if you pass these humiliation rituals there's a 70% chance you'll get interviewed by a jeet with an unintelligible accent. Fuck amazon.

Any industrial controls/PLC programmers here?
How is your job? Do you enjoy what you do?
I've been a SWE for 5 years, my company has an opening for a SCADA programmer position. Have been considering taking it because it seems much less likely to be automated by AI
>>
>>109431892
The entire field is boomers and jeets. Every single service provider, information source, whatever you could think of - jeets. Companies only need one or two SCADA devs, and they're always either 80 year old boomers, or jeets. The only reason it looks less likely to be automated by AI is because boomers gatekeep all of the useful information on how to solve problems. Also, if you don't know shit about mechanical or chemical or material engineering, you'll be completely reliant on an actual engineer to help you out, who may or may not be retarded, and you'll get blamed when you fail to deliver.

>>
>>109432187
>Will they know you cheated?
don't make it obvious and they won't.

>Do they also require an in-person leetcode in another interview round where you can't cheat?
yes, but all the interviewers know that candidates cheat in the OAs so they ask easier questions and force you to explain the solutions. You need to cheat and know leetcode.

I’m in a pretty bad position within this field at this point, and I’m wondering what actions I could take to fix things.

I’ve had one interview a couple years ago now which I failed, it was with Epic Systems in Wisconsin, and it was a pretty lucky thing to get the interview as it happened within only a few applications. I continued to apply but the luck didn’t repeat itself and my mental health worsened considerably.

So here I am a bit later with no recent projects and no experience in the field, I have had a couple jobs over the past two years, 10 months as a CAD technician and 6 months as a store manager for a retail location.

Very recently a family friend at Truist referred me to a couple roles, and of course my resume was quite bad for them at this point so I didn’t get any interest back when I applied.

My mental health has been improving lately and I’m receiving clinical help with adhd and depression. And well, I’m wondering if there’s any way to move back toward the field at this point for someone in my situation.

Specifically,

Given my situation:

Is a 6–12 month portfolio rebuild a realistic path into SWE?

Would you target adjacent roles first (QA, support engineering, IT, etc.), or go straight for SWE?

If you were starting from my position today, what would your plan for the next year look like?

I’m planning to start doing projects again and networking regardless, but I appreciate any advice I might receive in advance.

Not sure it matters at this point but my degree is a BS in CS from UNCC, my GPA was 3.55. Graduated May of 2024.

I joined a big tech company as a SWE (2yoe as AI/MLE) a few months back, got reorged, and got picked up by a team that i worked a small project with. Now my new team needs to work substantially with the CEO’s focus team (ex OpenAI guys), and i’m dragged along with it.
They work insane hours, and frankly I’ve never done proper SWE work, only MLE, and I still use a lot of AI assistance and haven’t shipped much production code. Not sure what to do here, it’s a great opportunity to learn but i feel like i might not be able to keep up and i’ll get laid off. How can I set myself up to not fall behind?

The most efficient way to move traffic through as a whole is to use all the road that's available to you and zipper merge at the pinch point. If you merge earlier you're doing exactly the same thing, but doing it arbitrarily early and leaving a whole stretch of road unused. My personal rule is I'll let exactly one car in front of me, but I will fight to the death to prevent a second motherfucker from squeezing in after them

I don't fit in your category but.. absolutely do not put your high school diploma on your resume.
>Why?
It's assumed you have it for any tech job. That is a very very low bar and it's embarrassing you'd think it would matter enough to warrant space on your resume. and even then, it's not even a requirement for most tech jobs probably. and/or, some very rare programming autist unicorn dropped out of high school to just code all day and he has a GED or not. In all cases, you don't list it.
>Would you ever list it?
Some jobs are very entry level and require little experience or education, like forklift driver, factory worker, truck driver, retail worker. etc. . Though, they may require a highschool diploma as a general barrier to entry just to filter out complete retards. For those jobs, you would list your high school diploma.

If you have some certs, they may warrant an "education" section if they are very good and well known. But certs are becoming less and less impressive today. I personally wouldn't. And if you don't have any certs, the most well known ones cost money and time, and I'd instead just recommend to contribute to FOSS or start a project.
>>
>>109431712
nta either. Some people in the US drop out of high school because most public high schools are complete shit and really just daycares for older teens (not all, but). You learn everything you need to know by 9th grade or so, and can teach yourself the rest much more efficiently. A GED is the superior option for a capable and intelligent young adult. I had a friend who was very talented in tech, and he dropped out of high school right away, programmed until he could legally take the GED, took it and got a huge head start on college. He then got a BS and MS in Computer Science, and then immediately got hired by a big company and continued hopping until today, where he's in FAGMAN. This all works because GED's are equivalent to a regular hs diploma, and unlike college degrees, they don't have any names behind them. Also if you do get a college degree, that easily overtakes your GED, and even then, the GED stands out as a cool/good thing if you then went on to knock out college with ease.

I really want to know how big companies recruit and screen people.

I got assigned to be on an interview panel to hire for an embedded software job.

A glance at the resume I can already smell the curry without even seeing the candidates name or work locations. It's heavily padded out to two full pages. Only jeets think a long padded resume is good.

Jeeta gets on the call, providing shallow answers to all my colleagues questions.

For giggles I ask the jeeta what build systems she has used for embedded C. She replies she doesn't understand what I mean Fine, I ask her how you add a new C file to a build.

Her response is "I just go to the project manager and add it".

This jeet claims to have 12 years of c experience and has not edited a makefile.

At least I got to do gods work and keep a jeet from further shitting up another job. Really though I would have never even bothered interviewing based off the horribly padded resume alone.

Those FAGMAN jobs are really not the bulk of the jobs anon. You can get the job since by seniority and breadth of experience you outclass the new grads they get mass applying daily.
>>
>>109425998
You get a device expressly for whatscrapp.

But if you make that device actually secure the failure to be able to establish side channels to rape data triggers alerts that prevent login until you download the 'real' whatscrapp.

Aren't you specifically talking about entry level jobs though? I wouldn't be applying to those jobs, I'd be applying to positions where all the other candidates have even more experience than me. Anyway I'm looking specifically at big tech because I'm tried of being paid less than 6 figures with no equity or bonuses and I know these companies are paying like $300k TC minimum these days.

>>
>>109437173
Entry for FAGMAN is like 6 figs normally. You might be able to swing mid level or manager position after you have been there for a few years. in which case TC 220k for mid level is what your looking at on the low end.

I still do 2-5 interviews per month from whores bothering me with fake job offers in linkedin but already gave up on IT 2 months ago.

Now im choosing a new carrer between: nurse, pet groomer, bricklayer, welder, carpenter, eletrician.
I know nothing about any of these fields so i will just pick one at random, spend 6mo to feel it, then keep going or choose another. Have no better idea.

And yeah, it is possible that the ai craze looses steam and we see a small boost on jobs in the next year, but im not crazy to count on this. Ive been unemployed for 5mo now. I could be doing uber eats but dont like riding motorcycles since you can easily get fucked up in some accident.

At Amazon we started tracking AI usage in hours kek. First it was how many team members use AI at least once per week, then once per day, then they started counting how many hours per week we "engage" AI, apparently 8 hours is the goal???? How the fuck is this sustainable or affordable? I understand AI usage okay I use it daily but 8 hours per week thats 20% of your time having a clanker doing something, take out meetings and shit and that jumps to maybe 30%. You literally have to mindlessly vibecode everything to reach that target

I think I'm just going to quit on Monday. I have 4 years of savings. My resume got traction for a few jobs just this week, but I'm beyond exhausted. There is a type of engagement in big companies where some team handles something and another one needs to do something on it but the first team doesn't have the bandwidth to do it so the second team does it with """"support"""" from the first team - remember it's the same team that doesn't have bandwidth.
In amazon we call it away team but I'm sure there are identical concepts in other companies, basically it's the most humiliating, soul crushing humiliation ritual there is, imagine basically begging pajeets to review or approve something, it can be as simple as pressing a button that takes them 2 seconds to do but you can't do it from your side and they will keep ghosting you until you escalate the entire fucking org. People should absolutely be promoted with no managerial experience, that's how you make technically competent people into managers. >>109449501
not every individual contributor is cut out for management, especially when I have to be the one to make major revisions to their work and make obvious suggestions they haven't even considered. companies have already created more levels in the IC track for this reason. the market is so shit it would not be difficult to find someone to fill that role.

My issue is less with the promotion and moreso with the expectation that they are now my manager. I don't have anything to gain from them. I do think we needed some sort of leadership, but I would have preferred if we hired someone from outside the org to fill that role rather than just promoting someone to it because they've been here the longest.
I have a meeting with the director this week and will need to think of the nicest way possible of expressing this.
>>
>>109449454

I don't get it. even in this general we've discussed many times that company don't really want their competent goy workers to become managers, BECAUSE they are competent. a manager presses the workers to stay productive.
>>
>>109449640
It is also very annoying that companies and recruiters treat role titles at face value. They are supposed to correlate with your experience, but in the majority of companies I've worked for the gymnastics you have to perform to get a promotion rarely have to do with actual skill or experience. My last company stiffed myself and teammates of promotions because of budget issues. We had an associate who had clearly demonstrated they were ready to move to mid-level but the org kept promising they would get a promotion and behold, they got laid off

Reminds me of my former tech lead who never demonstrated any leadership qualities nor was he was particularly good with coding, planning, or design. He rarely talked to the team, rarely helped the team, and rarely guided the team except in rare instances of imposing hair-brained decisions. Somehow he charmed his way into becoming an engineering director at another company that was much larger.

That's not the point, rather that there is no path between IC and management at all right now. Only people with 0 knowledge or experience are getting management roles. That's a huge reason why everything is so shit nowadays. Not to mention that what you describe is the typical failing upward scenario, those people shouldn't have been hired in the first place and failing upward is caused by inexperienced mba-only management at the top.

A little interesting juggling meetings, but very doable, but that could have been the fact I was on my way out of one and being given stupid easy tasks and documentation and the other one just being onboarding stuff that they fucked up so took forever.

>all those overcomplicated cloud-focused software infrastructure that stacks layers upon layers of abstractions
cloud heroically struggles with problems unknown to on-premises infrastructure.
We've known for years that distributed systems are complex, slow and expensive, why does everyone keep pushing it over centralized systems, especially at places when distributed systems offer no advance whatsoever? Cloud for the sake of cloud, as if cloud was a value in itself.
Managements literally split the budget in half for on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
Cloud budget MUST go to the cloud, despite barely anyone at the company using it and begging for more on-prem compute.
We could buy twice the compute, instead we are forced to spend that budget on pre-paid credits at some cloud company we most likely will never use.
Make it make sense.
No wonder clouds like Amazon, Azure, Google etc. are doing so well when you have mandatory cloud budgets inside companies.
The whole market is fake, gay and rigged.

>wtf there was a power outage, all of our shit went down
>users in europe are reporting 400ms delays when refreshing the application
>>
>>109451402
The reason is it allows "hardware resources" to be spun up or down at any moment, so it means no procurement or purchase decision required. What's more, cloud providers offer tons of credit in practice.
>>
What does it take to even get an interview at FAGMAN at the mid to senior level? Seems impossible without connections.
>>
>>109451663
Literally this is what happens with cloudshit, while for centralized you'll colocate when needed. People are moving out of github majorly for this reason (constant outages while the world heavily depends on CI/CD-based bullshit provided by repo hosts nowadays).
And even "blind" you won't get 400ms from even east yuropoor to west coast, more like 120ms tops. Furthermore, the delay limit is 2s, which is a far cry from 400ms (beyond that limit, users can decide not to use the site just on psychological inconvenience alone).

>SOLID
how do you stay SOLID after 50?
>>
>>109451663
lol, our cloud compute provider has issues almost weekly, it took them over a month to fix a slow storage issue that made running any compute jobs impossible. No one gives a shit at clouds, to the point our employees would literally wait for the local resources to free up than to deal with cloud shit. Now you have to use different tools too, frequently very limited, you have to pass data back and forth between locations etc.
Compare that to centralized compute cluster with fast networking, all services local as well, K8s customized exactly for our users needs, centralized NAS storage available anywhere.
>>109451689
>it allows "hardware resources" to be spun up or down at any moment
while costing 10x as much or more, on-demand pricing is absolutely crazy, even long-term contacts (that's 3 years!) are ridiculous, a local server would already beat renting after a year and a half (that already includes cost of collocation and power), and you get to keep the hardware at the end.
Cloud can act as an extension of on-prem in a pinch if you momentarily really need more resources, but basing your whole infrastructure on it is crazy to me.

They'll still push. The trick is to stick to your positions. When they ask "Well what about..." don't let them write down something that's not true or semi-true, as the person doing the adjudication will only see the reports, they won't be talking to you. Context will be lost. As for the FSP, don't admit to anything, no matter how many times they say "I'm seeing some weird data on the chart that indicates you might not be truthful..." Just say okay and go again. It's all scripted.
But also, the work is going to probably be boring as fuck anyway.

>no one gives a shit at clouds
I work at cloud. It's not that we don't give a shit, it's that it is incredibly complicated. In the core compute org, which includes engineering for networking, OS, drivers, firmware, VMs, storage backend there is something like 30k employees. There are so many individual components it takes forever to figure out what even went wrong in the first place sometimes. We get tickets that just say
>my network turned off for 1 second 3 weeks ago, this is unacceptable fix now!!!!
and they refuse to provide more help than that, refuse to help us get a reproduction of the issue. And it's some small artisinal cheese store in spain. Well guess what, no one gives a shit about your small ass company if you won't even help us. We're instead going to focus on debugging the issue blackrock or walmart is having on 10 of their 30,000 VMs.
We had a customer complain once that the node they landed on was at 80C and demanded answers and an RCA for what that was causing their configuration issues

Yes, but businesses are not rational systems so it's still more beneficial for the shareholders to do this. Terrible in general but can depend on jurisdiction. If you use an EOR they'll make you pay employment tax on the full amount on top of your normal employee taxes (plus other fees for things like benefits). If you have your own company you will have to tax optimize and can't pay yourself the whole amount. Any contract at less than 100/hour is not worth doing even as a noob. Even in my yuropoor country I bill USD$150 minimum (given that I'm skilled and experienced) and if I were in the US it is estimated I should be able to get around $400.
