i've been waiting for the flint 4 to come out, but over time doing something like a unifi cloud gateway ultra + a wifi 7 ap. i now don't give a crap about ubiquity privacy because there's a dozen other vectors of privacy invading tech we already have. Has anybody done the math recently on upgrading your system to lower power costs? Is it worth it these days, or are prices so fucked that you shouldn't do it if you also have to buy new RAM?
My homeserver still runs on a DDR3 AMD Athlon(tm) X4 845, which is enough for my needs, but even a DDR4 build could save me between 30 to 80 dollars a year and would run significantly faster.

I want to expose Calibre-Web so my ereaders can access my OPDS feeds.

Do I need more security than ensuring that my passwords are good if I'm running this through Caddy and using a Cloudflare Tunnel? To be clear, I'm not exposing anything beyond http://localhost:8083, and frankly for extra security, I might see if I can just expose http://localhost:8083/opds or something. I'm basically relying that there's no attack vectory in calibre thta would allow them to fuck me, but I do suppose I wonder what I could and would do to beef up security here. Seems like they'd have to either A) Crack the admin password or B) find an exploit to allow uploads, but neither of these things SEEM all that likely to me. I'm just not clear how I'd protect against any of this however, and I thought that the cloudflare tunnel would protect me from a lot of garbage already anyways.

I access the rest of my server via tailscale so I'm not exactly worried about anything else

Yeah with CW I think all the defenses that are available to you are the network (tailscale etc) + strong password. You can probably look into running the application in an unprivileged container but that's defense in depth, a lot of things have to go wrong for this to become relevant.

It all depends on the security practices of Kovid Goyal. Most software is largely secure because no one is allowed to interact with it, but once you put it online you're asking "has Mr. Goyal made his web app properly? Has he made the opds endpoint secure?" and if the question was easily resolved into a yes/no answer cybresecurity wouldn't exist as a field and there wouldn't be any vulnerabilities left.
That's why people use WireGuard or TailScale, because the question then becomes "have the developers of WireGuard or TailScale secured their software properly?" and the answer is more likely to be "yes" because that is one of the core purposes of the software. RCEs from being able to edit basically any text field is one that stood out to me. If you could upload a book you could set the description, title, etc. and so execute code like that. Of course that isn't an attack vector right here as long as everything is working how it should, but I share it just to illustrate that the gap between "OPDS isn't supposed to expose the ability to do anything but [...]" and "OPDS actually doesn't expose the ability to do anything but [...]" is not guaranteed to be nil.
All these vulnerabilities got fixed, but because it is non-trivial to find these in the first place there could be more in there, there could be more introduced later. If there's an option to get the ereader on TailScale, and so move the vulnerability set to theirs, which is more closely watched, that would be the better approach. I didn't spend too much time looking into it, as I don't own a Kindle, but it looks like this is possible with two plugins (one for TailScale and one for ODPS) for KOReader on a jailbroken device.

It's not as simple as picking a generation because I can very much pick a modern CPU and a "decent" (by pcbg/gaymer standards) motherboard and power supply and be worse off than something 10 or even 15 years older in absolute idle and it's all because the current market values zero about idle efficiency with sub 70% efficient PSUs or Mobo VRMs that only start hitting their efficiency peak at 200w

I have a haswell system that consumes 28w with a few SSDs. I cannot replace that system solely based on power savings because the possible savings is pretty low to begin with and it's unpredictable as to the improvements.

Same with the E5-2690 v4 system. Even if I were to blow hundreds on getting the absolute most modern DDR4 platform. I cannot be sure what the improvements will be. The only way to guarantee any savings would be downgrading from a server platform to a consumer/low power platform but to me that isn't savings and more giving up.

I think it might be possible on my Kobo, but I bought this Xteink to use and it's pretty cool but too painful right now to get it on the tailscale network, so I figured I'd just expose CW with a cloudflare tunnel. Strong passwords, the OPDS password itself won't even allow uploads, so I guess you and the other anons call it that it just depends on if CW has an exploit, AND people are willing to track down that I've got it exposed, AND exploit it. I don't think the market for that kind of exploit is all that large when you can just go back to scanning the common open ports out there for idiots seems like a pretty small attack vector. I have a 80 PLUS Titanium PSU and it has 90% efficiency rating even at 10% load. Costs a pretty penny though.

Unless you have an extremely specific need for 5000+ RPM fans. Most FDB fans don't take a large amount of current. You can run 3 fans on one header without going over and will last plenty long.

I have a 4u case with 3 120s and 2 80s with arctic plain p12 (~55cfm) and p8 (~25 cfm) fans and it just doesn't have enough airflow, I can't keep my 65w cpu below 80c under light loads. I was looking at some deltas because I know they are very high quality, pretty cheap used and move a ton of air. I also looked at arctics pro/max fans but they are about the same price or sometimes more expensive (when they are even in stock) for less max cfm and pressure and also their actual server fans are about equivalent to used deltas in price and performance but after watching a couple review videos holy mother of fuck they are LOUD even at 50% (and legitimately a hearing hazard at full tilt) and use 3-4 amps meaning I would have to get a separate fan controller anyway, and if I'm going to do that then again I might as well get some used high power deltas for cheaper.

5600x with pack in wraith stealth. The cooler isn't the problem, it's that I moved it into the 4u from its old case so it can be my server, in the old case that had like 7 p12 fans (3 in 4 out) and in there it would pretty much never reach 85 even at full power.

Dude home servers are such a cool hobby. This baby pirates movies and tv shows, fetches subtitles, re-encodes the file for web players and burns in the subs, then uploads it to a digitalocean bucket for me so I can drop them in cytube to watch shit with my friends. Got all of IASIP processed while I took a long nap today. It's taken months of on and off tinkering, but now I'm finally feeling like it's pretty stable and am trying to think of what I should do with it next

Ok so I might be getting a Dell PowerEdge R750 with 16x 2.4 TB drives for free. I don't know anything about servers and I have no experience in networking other than playing with my router settings. Hi guys newfaggot here, I just upgraded my pc and now have an old one with ~7TB of data I’d like network access to at least while I’m home. New PC is win11, old is win10.
Is it even feasible to set the old one up as a constantly available server/network drive? I tried when I first built the new one by linking them with a lan cable and following some youtube tutorials to set it up as a local network, and it worked for about a day and then stopped and I never was able to get it working again.
That was 4 months ago though and now I've forgotten how it was even set up.
I know servers are usually a linux thing but I lack the qualifications.
Any tips are appreciated thank you.

Self-hosting email is not really doable, at least not at home, unless you have an ISP that will set the PTR record properly, etc, then expect all of your emails to be filtered as spam.

You'd need a VPS somewhere to properly self-host email although you're likely better off just paying someone to host it for you.

Lost job, revived my miniserver due to writing logs to EMMC memory like an idiot, job searching is awful, have been coding in Rust, Java and Python the latter being the one that paid the bills.

I don't think so, I turned off everything that would cause CPU or HDD load like applications and shares and then let the system settle for 10 minutes after booting before checking the killawatt, and both readings were steady state with maybe a +/- 5w swing. Even confirmed it this morning after turning everything back on as normal the night before and just letting it do whatever, still 90-100w idle with both cards installed. It doesn't make logical sense and I don't understand what's happening, but I'm certainly not complaining.

Glinet routers are good, they run a custom version of OpenWRT on them. They're made by a chink company though so you can't buy them right now because of the FCC.

You could get something like the OpenWRT One:

I like the software now that I've been using it for a while, and I think I'm inclined to use it for the future instead of trying to go back to Mealie. It's got some parts that feel a bit clunkier, but the package itself still comes across as being more intuitive and overall better.

The Good:

I was retarded and bought a Synology NAS that has 1 GB RAM only. Basically it just has jellyfin, sonarr and qbittorrent but I can't run jellyfin and sonarr at the same time as jellyfin keeps crashing and I switch between them manually. I've read somewhere that I could use RJ45-to-USB-C adaptors for this, since it does have a USB-C port. And since it's basically running Linux with this modified firmware, I assume it could work.

Quite explicable, the ones you buy on ebay for $7 are at a minimum 10 years old built with 10+ (more like 15+) year old technology and design philosophy. In fact the main reason the 4 port (16i/e) versions suck so much juice is that they used to just be a pair of 2 port (8i/e) chips on one board with a plx switcher which is easily the hungriest and hottest component. Newer single chip designs cut the power and thermals by 1/2 to 2/3 of the models they replace and only cost marginally more used.

What is a good docker alternative to steam-headless? It's first boot initial install something or other bullshit has apparently been broken for months now with no fix in sight. I did set up a vm and it works well enough, but that requires me to isolate my gpu so no other app can use it (on truenas) so I would prefer a docker solution to a vm if possible to keep the gpu available for transcoding and whatnot for the 98% of the time I'm not gaming. They replaced some of those OPS pluggable computers at work and I managed to snag an old one. Got an actual i7-10700 in a socket which I didn't expect, 2x16GB sodimm sticks of ddr4, has a normal barrel jack next to the 80pin so I was able to plug it right in with a laptop power supply. No drive so I gave it a 128gb SN520 I had in the drawer. I feel compelled to make this my new NAS but I don't want to stick a SAS controller on a riser and cuck myself with a USB 2.5G ethernet adapter. Guess I have to build a 10" rack to slot it in and pretend I'll find a real use for it.
