We need to autoban the discussion of linux for a few days, /g/. Not forever, just for a few days, until the over zealous Linux users realize that they are only 1% of that market and it is NOT fair that 1% of the market gets half the threads and discussion here. This isn't representative of the populace and is NOT FUCKING FAIR. I come here to discuss technology, particularly computers. Why is such a small minority in this arena practically owning the fucking board?

I do use Windows, and while I have apple, at least the Macfags and the threads here are representative of population and market of OSX users. Unlike the tiny Linux using minority here that seems to make at least 3 threads a piece, because I know there is not that fucking many linux users.

Pretty much any "tech literate" friend I know IRL has considered switching. Me and another guy already have. Going by Steam statistics, something like 7% of English-speaking users now run Linux (up from like 2% just five years ago).

Dear god people.

If any of you (and i know you faggots are) are using linux as your everyday OS, you are fucking stupid. None of you are important enough to warrant needing some super secure thing. One of the reasons it's good for security is because if you want to open a .txt you need to write a whole new fucking program just to open it. If I want to install a god damn internet browser, i dont want to have to spend 4 years learning C## to look at some fucking video on youtube.

It's not compatible with any games, it's nothing special for programming (unless youre looking to practice coding by writing new programs to open your fucking browser). So, what else is there besides the internet? Use something that doesnt take 8 fucking years to learn to use.

If youre using it to run a server, great, I can see that. But you faggots using it as a daily OS are so fucking stupid.

Sure, it looks nice. But even if every time I took a shit, it came out looking like a perfect goddamn sculpture, at the end of the day it's still a pile of shit.

I guess you might be able to impress your friends with your super badass computer knowlege, but you probably dont have any. Thats not a personal thing against any of you, but I really cant imagine having time to socialize when you have to spend 18+ hours a day to learn how to install a fucking program.

But do what you want, if you enjoy having to type SUDO SUDO FUCKMYASS every time you want to check facebook, be my guest.

Tell me you've never used Linux without telling me you've used Linux. I've never had an experience remotely close to this. Please describe exactly how you need to learn to program to open a text file or your browser because of security restrictions or this is just bullshit.
>It's not compatible with any games
I turn on the "Linux compatibility" checkbox on my Steam library and I still have 246/246 games listed. This is not from collecting Linux compatible games, this is from using Windows for gaming for years. Linux compatibility in 2026 is just that good, your info is years out of date.
>it's nothing special for programming
It comes with programming tools installed, it comes with packages to install virtually every programming language, many distros have packages that allow you to install multiple versions of different libraries you might need or compile them from scratch with some special flag you might need.

Would now be the time to tell you DOS started as a cheap clone to UNIX?

If I'm so stupid, why does this run so smoothly, so consistently?

>None of you are important enough to warrant needing some super secure thing
Just because you never do anything interesting doesn't mean this applies to everyone. Sure, most people don't need ultra security - and most people don't actually get that from *nix, they just get something reliable. Most of the 'security' obtained is simply not being in winhoes.

> if you want to open a .txt you need to write a whole new fucking program just to open it.
You *can*. This is your choice. Anyone with any sense will fire up an existing text editor or just tap: cat /you\ Are\ Full\ Of\ Shit.txt.

>If I want to install a god damn internet browser, i dont want to have to spend 4 years learning C## to look at some fucking video on youtube.
Again. You *can* do that. If you want. Otherwise you just do what everyone else does an just install the browser you want. Apart from a few niche offerings, they all have native *nix flavours.

By which you mean the games have gone out of their way to not be compatible with linux.
And the hundreds of games on this system alone strongly suggest otherwise.

>So, what else is there besides the internet?
What was there before the internet? Your lack of imagination is what limits you, that and your lack of intelligence. Which you have proven yourself with:

>Use something that doesnt take 8 fucking years to learn to use.

If it took you 8 years to learn how to use *nix, then that shortcoming is yours. I've experience of well over 1000 normies ditching XP and pickin' up *nix before the end of the week.

>Sure, it looks nice.
It can do. But the theme the user applies isn't exactly *nix, now, is it?

>at the end of the day it's still a pile of shit.
Because you started with shit.
When you start with something that powers everything serious, almost everywhere, then you end up with a reliable platform.

> guess you might be able to impress your friends with your super badass computer knowlege

>but you probably dont have any.
Oh. How I wish that statement true.

>I really cant imagine having time to socialize when you have to spend 18+ hours a day to learn how to install a fucking program.
Just because *you* have to spend 18 hours learning how to install a program - then spend another 18 hours learning it again when you want to install something else - this doesn't mean everyone else suffers your retardation. Most just install it.

I personally feed a text file into the package manger and after a little delay on downloading that much crap 4000+ packages just seamlessly roll into service.
Fire up 4k installers in winhoes and watch it shit the bed as you spend the next 40 hours dealing with the entire payload one by one.

Once the system has been configured you should be able to count the amount of times you type 'sudo' a week on one hand. And have no danger of running out of fingers.
Anything else suggests very strongly what your're doing, or how, is very wrong.

Never understood that point. If you buy a prebuilt PC then it already comes with Windows and the upcharge for the OEM licensing is negligible since they buy them in bulk. Windows user here. Is it true you can't just download and run an executable on Linux?
Are you forced to compile from source or rely on the distribution's packet manager?
>>
>>109481905
>packet manager
>he can't use a package manager
>he can't even spell it
Grim.
>>
>>109481905
there are many ways to run a program. from the package distribution like you said. you compiling from the source like you said, flatpaks that is like an universal store like windows store but for every linux distribution and appimages and linux binaries, Linux binaries usually are how these programs run when they are installed. you can just double click them like an exe file but most linux programs want you to use package manaer or make these binaries yourself. appimages also work like an .exe but they are very rare.
>>
>>109481905
To assume these is genuine questions...

No. It is not true.
If it's an executable not intended for linux you might feature some difficulty, but if it's for the same processor architecture there's usually some sort of translation layer available.

As for the source/package manger ... The package manager exists so you don't have to bother compiling from source, you can ofc do so if you wish.
But many 'popular' projects, for example firefox, independantly publish not just compiled binaries, but install packages intended for specific distributions...
What is provided is dependant on who is providing, and why.

>>109481993
Thanks for the answers and it is a genuine question.
I like that on Windows, programs come with dlls and whatnot so you don't have to worry how to run them.
How common is it for Linux programs to come with their own binaries?
I assume not very common, if the package manager is the intended default.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll have to figure out why my graphical session doesn't start anymore since the newest update. I expect it to take all night. who knows where it logs. Certainly not the screen.
>>
>>109482044
Flatpaks will install the necessary files, package manager will just install that program and you might have problems to run it in some distros. Appimages i'm pretty sure are intended to run like an exe where everything is there to be able to run.
>>
>>109480211
Generally true. I daily drove Arch Linux for a few years. When you have an issue that is also obscure or hardware related, goodluck. You have to spend time. Most of things are solved via Arch wiki or forum. It's just a minor incovenience.
The "time wasting" critic is real since Linux is generally used by 14 year old retarded toons who need their hyprland catppuccin neon glowing themes and "rice" their desktop to a "cosy and comfy" theme instead of doing something actually fucking useful.
I was also using hyprland, but I just yanked pre-made dotfiles that "just work" so I can focus on being productive. And yes, hyprland helps very much in that.
>>
>>109482044
There is a couple competing implementations. I use appimages for a few things, particularly steam because I'm not gonna install 32bit libraries for one fucking program just cause a game [that I wouldn't even pirate] requires them.
>>
>>109482044
>How common is it for Linux programs to come with their own binaries?
Difficult question. Likely due to poor phrasing.

Typically they is all binaries, I'll assume you meant libraries as that's what is in the Dynamic Linked Libraries.

Open source is essentially a toolbox. You need to smack in a nail you pick up a hammer. There's lots of different types of nail, and a few different ways you might want to hit it so there's a few types of hammer sat on the shelf ready to pick up and use. Or you can build your own if you think you can do it better.

Most can't be bothered to build a hammer each time they occur a nail, so just pick the closest one off the shelf. More complex product will be using more tooling. Tooling made by lots of different people.

A example here is VLC, at first glance it's a stand-alone product, but on the back end other open source projects have just been snapped together like lego.

In the case of VLC it'll be bringing things like ffmpeg in with it. Things like firefox etc use the package definititions to grab all the 'non firefox' things it wants and put them in the 'right' places.

But the majority of things in a package manager when you select an entry it'll auto-select anything it leans on - this differs from the winhoes installer by the content is preincluded and static with the installer, as opposed to grabbing fresh from the project at install time. The end user doesn't ever have to know about 'em. Unless they want to.

>>109482053

You have tried /var/log
???

Tho you may be 'better' served with: journalctl -xe
The -e starts it at the bottom of the jounal, and the -x opens more explaination.
You can use -b -1 to view the previous boot's logs.
-p err might be of use.
As can -g "string" to grep for a string.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux,” and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
