I'm considering switching to Linux.
Yes or no?

What makes you want to swap?
If you game it can be tough because small indie companies like Riot, Epic and Ubisoft aren't staffed enough to allow you to play everything there.
If your computer is nothing more than a browser bootstrap you can switch today.

Are you just looking for affirmation or distro recommendations?
CachyOS if gaming but stay away from the AUR.
Mint/Fedora for light gaming

These were both my replies because I forgot to answer all your questions.
I want both and maybe some beginner tips?
Is Cachy legit? I always thought it's a meme distro and to stay away from those?

Should I disable secure boot and TPM in bios on a new computer if I only plan to use Linux? Genuinely no clue if either of these is useful or if they just get in the way since my current PC doesn't have them.

You can but there is no need

What gamepad should I get if I use Linux and do not want to deal with configuring and remapping shit?

I play both native games and emulators up to the WiiU generation.

I remember using a PS3 controller years ago which "worked," but the buttons were mapped incorrectly/unintuitively, don't want to deal with that again.

Had a wired Xbox 360 controller for years and it worked like a charm, but it just broke. Would buy another, but Microshaft doesn't manufacture them anymore.

Right now I'm leaning towards an 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless. Any other suggestions?

Cachy is fine. It's a bleeding edge distro forked from one of the big Linux distros, Arch Linux. Not sure how much all the tunes like the custom kernel actually matter but it seems to only offer margin of error tier gains. If you have a recent CPU the packages specifically compiled for your architecture do make a bit of a difference in the overall speed of your system though.
The "meme" status comes from it being fairly new and a gamer oriented distro (many long time linux users see the influx of clueless gamers into the ecosystem as a menace). Basically anything new, targeted to a specific audience and with a smallish team is a "meme" in the sense that it has less quality control and there is no guarantee it will keep being supported down the line when compared to big boy distros that these smaller ones fork from but tl;dr is that CachyOS is just fine at the moment. Easy to set up, up to date and it has an active community. If your main focus is gaming then it's probably easiest to get help here when you have questions.

Personally I went with Fedora and I have not regretted it. It has a long history with many contributors and is a very "normal person" oriented distro with sane defaults. Packages are pretty up to date but not absolute bleeding edge (I prefer this, lower chance of issues). Only thing is you need to install some codecs from a separate repo since they don't serve copyrighted stuff on Fedora repos. There is no such thing as distro you can game on and distro you can't game on, for the most part what matters is not being too outdated, you can put Steam and launchers for non-Steam games on anything really. Honestly if you are new you can just hop around trying different distros and settle on whichever you like the best, it's what most people do.

Video files (mp4s, webms) in the kde plasma file picker don't show video previews like you'd expect, they just show the generic video icon. this doesn't apply to image files. tried changing the default video player (tried haruna & mpv) but it doesn't fix it. this issue doesn't happen in dolphin
>>
>>109487390
Not that guy but it's not like it's a huge task to just install a different distro if your current stops being supported so being anxious about the future is kind of pointless. It's why I will always recommend having only a small volume for your system and keeping most of your data separate. Easy to format.
>>
>>109487251
"light gaming"
You are a retard. You can "game" on any distro. But if gaming is your only reason to switch over just stay on windows. Don't give any advice because you are clearly unqualified for this as you believe that a distro is a separate operating system.

If you chose systemd during installation it will use systemd-boot which is a bootloader. If you do not want a bootloader you have to follow the manual steps from the arch wiki. In that case using a UKI is recommended because of compatibility reasons.
>>
>>109488813
Thanks. Would you recommend doing this post-install, or install Cachy manually/immediately with a UKI through pacstrap or something?
>>
>Arch
>Bottles for running Windows shit
>can't get external optical drive to be used by all programs
How do I fix this? It works in one of them, but not the other two.
>>
>>109489248
If you are using the cachy installer you have to install a bootloader first and then remove it after. Once installed you can follow the arch wiki on how to set up a UKI and direct kernel boot. Be prepared to chroot into your install with a live usb if you fuck something up or wipe the nvram with a bios update.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unified_kernel_image

I personally wouldn't do it because of the added hassle with bios updates.
>>
>>109489384
You can install the UKI in the default UEFI path and avoid bios updates making your system unbootable. But you are missing out on kernel select on boot and btrfs snapshots.

Found the problem. Man up and use QEMU/KVM.
>>
>>109487364
8bitdo is a great temporary/casual controller because it's so cheap but it's not really nice in the long run, analogs are not precise enough and the form factor isn't comfortable enough. I do have one but I don't use controller that much. For example, after playing fighting games for a while the d-pad began to 'lean' and I was producing accidental jumps...Right analog stick has strange issue in which it accelerates faster than the left analog stick at certain point and so on.
I don't think you need to configure any controller on linux these days no matter what you end up choosing.
>>
>>109490139
It's cheap but also miles better than other cheap controllers that sell for a similar price or lower.

You can spend stupid money on a controller these days if you really wanted to. Razer has ones that are $200, shit's ridiculous but I think you do get good analogue sticks for that price at least.

how do i change where my taskbar is on gnome? I don't like it being at the fucking top like it is.

It seems like my Fedora install started shitting itself after two months of usage. Whenever I put my laptop to sleep, there's a pretty huge chance my extensions stop working properly, they either reset to defaults or require a complete reinstall, I don't see any errors in the logs though. Is it just the Linux hibernation that sucks or am I retarded? Or both.

When I save a file in the KDE file picker there's a checkbox that will automatically add the right extension if I rename the file. However this does not apply to .mp4 files for whatever reason. >>
>>109490663
>open source software used and audited by milliions

It's monolithic. It's great. Everything is interconnected that way.
>>
>>109490597
No?
Steam works fine on Gentoo. All games I tried do. Since Artix is really just Arch but with different repos, I'd expect it works there too, but I have never tried Artix.
>>
>>109490676
Being monolithic is largely what makes it not so great though (regarding security and backdoors).
Look at, for example, how the Xz supply chain attack was able to cleverly exploit Systemd to open up SSH access to an attacker.
>>
>>109490663

ZX utils is everywhere. Not just systemd. Everything could be attacked.
>>
>>109490740
No, it specifically targeted libsystemd a library that many programs link to, including OpenSSH.
The attack wouldn't work on a system without Systemd since it's not there to be exploited.
>>

X isn't present on high security fucking servers though, is it?
Having this huge God library that most of the world links to and can potentially be exploited remotely is maybe not a good idea.
>>
>>109490726
Ackshually... The Linux kernel is incredibly modular and has an absurd amount of configuration parameters. You could build any operating system you want on top of it.
It's only monolithic in the sense it becomes a single file when you compile it.
systemd, on the other hand, is just silly. It demands that its services are run as PID 1, with root privileges of course. That only makes sense for the init, not for services like resolved or timesyncd.
>>
>>109490840
>You could build any operating system you want on top of it.
who the hell would even want to use an operating system build on linux?
>>
>>109490840
Nobody cares. Really. I'm sick of this "monolithic bad" debate. It works? Yes it works. Is it great at whatever it does? Yes it is. It applies for both systemd and kernel itself. There is a reason distro maintainers collectively chose to use systemd.

IMO the point of NetworkManager is the nice applet for various desktop environments, not much the ability to set an IP address for a network interface. What I really hate about NetworkManager is the fact that various desktop environments have it as a hard dependency but on Gentoo you can disable it as it's a build option.

It doesn't, it can completely handle everything related to the wifi device on its own including configuring the interface (if you set EnableNetworkConfiguration=true).
I just intentionally choose not to let it handle configuring the interface because I prefer to utilize networkd.

At this point Linux is so easy to use and install, game on and do regular tasks that only the most die hard people will stay on windows.

Fedora KDE should be the default Linux distro. It has all the modern features and just werks.

Mint should just take LXQT’s apps, a Wayland compositor and login manager of their choice because LXQT lets you build a DE like Lego and is compatible with a ton of things, then fill in the blanks to make Cinnamon-qt. Cinnamon and xfce are facing way too much work that has already been solved. I can’t think of a bigger example of the pain of duplicated work than all of these old desktops deciding they have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and write their own compositors and everything else. I know Muffin is based on Mutter but why not just use a desktop that lets you use whatever compositor you want? I don’t understand why Mint or xfce can’t just shove in an existing Wayland compositor is it a legal thing or are they not built for that?

Lads, I've reached the end of my knowledge.
I want to upgrade my Laptop's Debian from 11 to the newest version (13.whatever) and keep failing at creating a backup disk image.
What I've done so far is to boot from a live boot medium (Debian 13.whatever) and then just

 dd if=/dev/sda bs=8M status=progress | gzip -1 > ./LaptopBackup.img.gz

on a samba share that is running inside a ProxMox container on my HomeServer (16TB raw space). The share has 1.1TB provisioned space left, the SSD is a 1TB Samsung EVO 870.

After 29452402688 Bytes transmitted I got a

gzip: stdout: No space left on device error
, which prompted me to go around and fuck with samba for the past 32 hours.
Got frustrated and switched to ssh

 dd if=/dev/sda bs=8M status=progress | gzip -1 | ssh <username@serverip> "cat -> /home/<username>/Laptop_Backup/Laptop_Backup.img.gz"

Exactly 29452402688 Bytes later I got this error:
 write error: Disk quota exceeded.

Actual size of the file on the samba share in both attempts: 8.1GB.

Google has become fucking useless and no LLM knows what to make of this and I'm fucking done asking them about it. I've theorized that 29452402688 Bytes is the hard limit of what my 32GB RAM on my Laptop can buffer but LLMs have shot that idea down every time real quick.

I'm stuck and have no other ideas short of yanking the SSD out of my laptop and putting it in my server to rip it that way, but I'd have to fuck around a lot with it which I don't want to do.

Any leads for me? I just want to backup my shit and upgrade my laptop ( ;_;)

Hell, you don't even get thumbnails at all on 4chan
>>
>>109501627
Because Mint is actually built on top of an old GNOME stack and they don't have that.

It would be very easy for them to make their own XDG desktop portal with a Nemo (their file manager) inspired file dialogue but they're busy working on things nobody cares about.

Cinnamon is a half assed desktop. They should work on defining their own design language that's different from GNOME but they're not a serious desktop.

If you're using it because you want something like Windows then use KDE Plasma instead. It has none of these issues.

I wanna just point out one thing from my own personal experience the GPU drivers for integrated intel got dropped for really old hardware in debian 13 specifically my t61, so if you wanna watch youtube and get the most out of the machine debian 12 will be a lot better for this era of machine(if you're not using like a freetube tier client in replace of browser).

I can play 720p 60 on this machine 0 dropped frames and even some 1080p 30 but when I tried debian 13 my graphics capabilities totally went to shit with even 480p videos running like shit, when I looked it up in detail it said debian graphics stopped supported my gpu so you either have to use 12 or migrate 12s GPU system into 13 manually.

I installed GNOME on CachyOS post-install and I straight up do not have a lockscreen. GDM is installed, the autologin isn't set. I looked around for solutions and found out about the nopasswdlogin group but even after finding it in the system files and removing my user from said group in /etc/group & group- I still don't have one. grep shows that there's a nopasswdlogin in the /etc/gshadow & gshadow- files but I can't open those files to edit them for some reason. Has anyone else had this problem before? I saw an issue in the cachyos github where a Cinnamon user had the exact same problem but no one gave any solutions/workarounds there, and it's still open as of now.

No, however I do leave my NTFS drive mounted with ntfs-3g, I found the ntfs kernel driver super unstable when it comes to unexpected outages (causes a dirty bit that leads to the disk not remounting properly).
The downside of ntfs-3g is its performance is piss poor since it uses a FUSE driver. Also permissions suck.

Ok but the solution is literally just to run ntfsfix -d /dev/sdXY then mount as usual. Or I could just use ntfs-3g which is rock solid and has no issues with unexpected outages, nor unexpected corruption (so far).

I heard transferring files form linux to a portable hdd used on windows can corrupt the drive. So if I wanna transfer the files I have off a 64 gb usb that also was only used on windows before, would that cause issues for me if I tried to move those files onto my phdd since my laptop isnusing linux? If it would or has a chance of it I guess I just gotta find a cloud storage I can use for free for a couple days to toss the files on while.
>>

Adding onto this, after I connected my hdd to my laptop and moved some files from the hhd to the laptop awhile ago whenever I plug it in now it doesn't mount, and it kinda feels like the hdd isn't spinning up properly like it used too. What the hell is happening and did just copying some images fuck up my hdd.

>>109504561
never do this. the dirty bit is set on purpose and you're intended to run chkdsk before mounting it r/w again. running ntfsfix -d just clears the bit without checking anything. no different to skipping chkdsk when booting a crashed windows system.
ntfsfix is not chkdsk, it can't check or fix anything
>>
>>109504973
Exactly. And there's no way I'm booting windows to get a proper chkdsk after a power outage. So I'm just going to use ntfs-3g which doesn't cause these issues.

>>109504726
I mean you could but my actual answer is that I don't recommend NTFS at all unless for some reason you cannot put a native filesystem on the disk (actively shared with windows dual boot, no space to backup data before wiping the filesystem).
But yes, you could very easily and safely do that. I actually use my ntfs-3g mounted partition for a lot of stuff, it's fine it's just not performant and is incredibly feature poor.
>>
>>109504976
you can use a VM running any form of windows (even just an installer) to run chkdsk from.
this isn't a matter of ntfs3 vs. ntfs-3g either, a dirty fs is a dirty fs no matter what driver is used. if you aren't willing to use chkdsk then you shouldn't be using ntfs

>this isn't a matter of ntfs3 vs. ntfs-3g either, a dirty fs is a dirty fs no matter what driver is used. if you aren't willing to use chkdsk then you shouldn't be using ntfs
Either ntfs-3g doesn't do actions that might cause a need for the dirty bit, or it fails to apply it when it should. Regardless, I've never had any problem when remounting the drive despite not chkdsk'ing it, and I've been doing it for years now.
I agree that ideally no one should be using ntfs, and I'd love to change the filesystem, unfortunately I don't have another disk to move the data to to achieve such a transition at the moment.
>>
>>109505030

>>
>>109505001
i share that partition between windows and linux
thats why i want to keep it NTFS
>>
>>109505054
It should be fine, especially if you're not constantly writing new data and are just reading the same few big ROMs for usage. In fact, I'd be very surprised if you ever encounters any problems at all doing read-only actions, it's just slow with ntfs-3g.
Kernel ntfs is faster, but as previously stated has annoying stability issues, it also has weird naming and permission changes from 3g's behavior, but this could be a user error issue on my part.
>>
>>109505030
the dirty bit is set on rw mount, and cleared on dismount. the purpose is so a driver can tell if it was dismounted cleanly or not
>>
>>109505092
Then ntfs-3g doesn't set it. Go ahead and pull the power on a machine with an ntfs partition mounted with 3g, it won't get dirty.

you would just run the commands in reverse
>sudo dnf remove libva-nvidia-driver.{i686,x86_64}
>sudo dnf remove akmod-nvidia
>sudo dnf autoremove (just removes any extra packages those may have installed)
and install picrel

Context on a guys saying putting linux file son a portable hdd that was used on windows corrupts it or the issue I have with mounting the drive? Either way, the hdd is brand new so i highly doubt it's an issue with it, but no matter what I can't get it to mount again for some reason, just gives me the same error, and it's not even a specific one, just a generic error message that lists everything that could be a problem (wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock, missing codepage or helper program, or other error) so it's not like I can look up how to fix it either. The only reason I can think of it might not mount is if I accidentally hit the icon to eject the disk instead of safely removing it but even that I doubt would start causing this problem after one time.
>>
>>109506380
Glad you said that. After dealing with the issue I just went to play vidya and didn't think to check. There is data on them, including the snapshots. So I need to port them over now. Then again if I can't really go back to previous snapshots due to kernel mismatches then I'm not sure what the point of it is then.

Another anon said another bootloader called Limine can get around this issue, but replacing a bootloader sounds kinda of annoying.

>>109506543
Noted.
>>
>>109506629
>There is data on them, including the snapshots.
There is data, of course, but is it unique? As in, have you lost data by recovering your new active root? If there's no new data to lose you can delete them, if there is you can copy it out to the new subvols.
>Limine can get around this issue
A hook exists for Limine that can list bootable snapshots and tie them to a backed up version of their associated kernel in /boot (gets cleaned as it fills up), so that would prevent the mismatch issue. You could have also manually rematched the kernel or the system modules I suppose.
>but replacing a bootloader sounds kinda of annoying
It's actually very easy to do, however if you're using Grub (ew), I believe it has a similar snapper hook, though I'm not familiar with it.
>>
>>109506624
If windows' native chkdsk cannot fix it then something is very, very wrong. And it's not that you wrote a file to it from Linux.
>>
>>109506685

>>
>>109506700
If the disk will not mount but the partition reads as if an ntfs filesystem exists on the drive the only thing I can recommend is a chkdsk, and I wouldn't really trust non microsoft alternatives to do it properly.
You could install a Windows VM and pass the device to it if you really get stuck. Or you could try a linux tool I suppose (at your own risk).

Does the partition table seem undamaged? Have you rebooted the PC since unmounting it? (This is not strictly necessary but is easier than me telling you how to properly reset something on an active system)
>>
>>109506629
>There is data on them, including the snapshots. So I need to port them over now.
No you don't. The subvolumes you see are the snapshots (btrfs is a bit of a mindfuck), but you can delete the broken subvolumes with the btrfs command and it won't touch your other snapshots.
>Then again if I can't really go back to previous snapshots due to kernel mismatches then I'm not sure what the point of it is then.
You probably have /boot on a separate partition so it doesn't have snapshots. One solution is to add a pacman hook that backs up your /boot partition (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/System_backup#Snapshots_and_/boot_partition) or you need to move /boot back into the brtfs root partition and use a bootloader that suppports booting from btrfs like grub
>>
>>109506722
If by rebooting you mean turned the laptop on and off then yeah, even after resetting it or shutting it down and turning it back on again it doesn't let me mount the hdd. I can't see how just mounting it a couple times before would've fucked up the hdd when all I did was move a few video and image files from the hdd to my laptop but somehow that's caused problems. The partition itself seems fine from just a quick look at it.

Yes, syslog-ng is another common one. The logging daemon will dump to /var/log/<THING>.log in most cases but you can also configure it to write to a database or something if you feel like doing that.

Usually, it's only /var/log/syslog you care about anyway though which will contain anything and everything.

If you have an actual problem with a service then logs are almost always useless in my experience. It's either some extremely complex problem that you can't easily re-create or it's a startup issue you can fix easily in 5 minutes.

Oh, and also only protects the firmware properly if you revoke the Microsoft keys which barely anyone does and then establish your own chain of trust with your own MOC keys, etc, and sign your kernel and bootloader yourself.

Just because many deploy it poorly, doesn't mean its inherently ineffective.
>>
>>109510232
You have to go into your BIOS settings and revoke the Windows keys yourself. If you don't do that then anyone who manages to convince Microsoft to sign malware can still get it to load on your system.

But yes, Canonical does use their own platform key. It even comes preloaded on some laptops and desktops alongside the Microsoft keys.
>>
>>109510249
>You have to go into your BIOS settings and revoke the Windows keys yourself.
You do not, you only have to enable setup mode and enroll keys that do not include the microsoft certificates.
Although, perhaps this varies between firmware.
>>
>>109510267
It does vary between firmwares, yes. If you did that and can no longer boot Microsoft Windows or anything else Microsoft has signed then congrats, your system is more secure than most.
