you know it’s pretty much microsoft themselves that are making these threads vecause they’d rather have people use windows 10 iot ltsc than linux
like the activator is hosted on github, a microsoft owned company. how telling isn’t that
microsoft has never really fought piracy, they’d rather have nearly a monopoly

Posted in the old thread accidently

I've gotten a new Lenovo laptop, and I can't decide whether to just run a debloater, or to install either Win 10 or Win 11 ltsc. I'm worried I'll lose a lot of manufacturer customizations that are actually important, like fn keys and things like that. I'm not sure what to choose, any advice?
>>
>>109554252
One thing you could do is use a WinPE live ISO like the one HirenBootCD or Sergei Strelec offer and use DISM through that to extract all the PC's OEM drivers to a USB so after you wipe the OEM install and install 11 LTSC over it you can just re-install all those drivers through Device Manager via pointing it as the USB driver folder.

I'm following the 1st guide for win11 iot ltsc, it says "At installation type, choose Custom Install. At the drive selection step it's important here to let the Windows partition take the entire drive first, then shrink it after installation if you want to add extra partitions."

I didn't see the custom install option, abd my drive is alreasdy partitioned into 5 partitions: a system partition, MSR, a primary partition, A recovery partition and a 344 kb unallocated partition. Am I correct assuming that I have to delete all these so it is 1 partition of unallocated space?
>>
Hello guys. Why is it uninstalling stuff completely until nothing is left of an app such a headache on windows? What are the best apps to help me? Wiztree and revo/geek uninstaller? It frustrates me a lot because I don't have much storage space and can't immediately see what is taking up so much.

Thoughts on portable apps? I fucking hate shit being in my registry and I'm bad at keeping my OS clean and track all the apps I have installed. I just keep downloading shit and when the storage is full I feel like I need to nuke it and reinstall.
>>
>>109555780
>and my drive is alreasdy partitioned
you mean it was partitioned BEFORE you boot up the installer or the installer partitioned it that way? if it's the later then you don't need to delete anything since the primary partition (Windows partition) should already be occupying most of the drive anyway
>>
>>109555780
Just use Shift+F10 to use diskpart to clean the target drive of all of its partitions. Then you can just install to the clean unpartitioned space.
>>
I'm still using Windows 10 LTSC. Should I upgrade to W11?
>>
>>109555888
I keep most apps on a separate partition save for a few things that are (at a glance) too much trouble to make portable, if you can do that it would save you time later but you'd also waste some time setting things up for that to work.
Most apps do need registry entries to function but rarely use them to store config/preferences and can recreate them just fine on a new system.

You can make most apps "portable" by just copying the installed program folder alongside the app's config folder (usually on %UserProfile%\AppData) to some other drive/partition and using symlinks to have the original config path write settings to your new drive/partition instead, then on a reinstall you just run a batch script to recreate those and your copied app should run fine with your saved config.

That said it's hit or miss since you have to put the effort of learning per-app dependencies and paths so you can symlink everything correctly, the more apps you use the more work you'd have to put for it, maybe there are apps that can automate all that but I'm already used to doing it by hand.

I usually only ever install things like .net runtime, visual C++, office, etc while actual usable 3rd party apps are all portable and persist reinstalls.
>>
>>109556122
You might as well upgrade to IoT LTSC 2024 if you want.
>>
>>109555888
>Thoughts on portable apps?
Windows tracks a lot of this automatically. Check out "shellbag", taskbar, or Event Viewer forensics. Even portable apps usually leave behind system traces and artifacts regardless of the developer's intent.
You should use VMs with snapshots or perhaps sandboxing applications.

Hey quick question, I tried downgrading a laptop of mine from Win11 home to Windows 10 IoT. On the installation medium, it doesn't recognize the trackpad. IoT version is 2021, the Laptop was made in 2022. Will it pull the new drivers in to use the trackpad once Windows 10 is on it, or am I better off putting Win11 2024 IoT on, because that's the OS that the laptop was designed for?

it's better using windows 10 iot ltsc as long as you don't need the core optimizer for intel 12th gen or newer, or you have programs that don't work with it like the newest photoshop versions.

In-place upgrading via mounted ISO. Just get the IoT LTSC 2024 ISO and mount it, then run the setup.exe. Just make sure to check the box to say to not update right now (do that later after you're done installing) and that it says it'll keep your stuff.

Is it worth hopping from LTSC 2024 to a GAC edition like Enterprise? I know Microsoft is making an effort in unfucking some things but I don't know if LTSC is getting any of those updates until 2027 if/when it comes out.
>>
>Windows hopping
Why are you like this?
>>
>>109569243
it's probably going to get bug fixes and performance improvements that shares with 25H2. As for stuff like new taskbar and start menu features probably not because those can be considered feature updates, which LTSC doesn't include.

I'd say that since you're on 24H2 you should wait until around next year or until 26H2 releases for those fixes to settle down, because even if they're improving things the updates themselves are still annoying some users and are a bit unpredictable. Then you can decide if GAC is worth it by then

It's definitely a bit messy, and when it's changed somehow the OP changes it right back, so whatever I guess.
Basically when it comes to what Windows to use, use either GAC 10 Enterprise with ESU activated, GAC 11 Enterprise or IoT LTSC 2021 (10) or 2024 (11), which give more overall years of updates compared to GAC even with ESU.

:windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.

Wtf do I do now?

ok so it was cause I was booting from UEFI which vista doesn't like, so i had to reflash in MBR, i swear this shit is a headache.

ok vista is up and running and i have internet with mypal but now i can't figure out how to activate cause vista doesn't have powershell so MAS doesn't work.

which one do you trust more chocolatey or scoop?

winget
>>
>>109576915
i already use winget
i just want a second option
>>
>>109576921
idk if trust comes into my decision, i think choco has more packages but i like how scoop uses the shims for semi-portable-ish apps.
use all 3, no harm in it that i know of
>>
>>109576921
but i dont like how scoop puts everything into one folder in start menu if you dont tinker with it. just one of those things, scoop is best for lean portable apps where choco tries to be a full replacement for the install system. i mean im grossly oversimplifying but i hope you get my gist. each has their place
>>
>>109576921
mixing chocolatey and winget might lead to issues so you're best second option is scoop. you can also view the manifests easily with scoop cat [package name]
>>
>>109576954
yeah using both chocolatey and winget seems kinda redundant
>>

I trust my own Portable folder.

customisable context menus have been a thing in several file managers on linux for a long time
>>
>>109573038
Better late than never but kind of insignificant. Copy, cut, paste, properties, new folder, etc. all the useful stuff has a keyboard shortcut. What do you even use the context menu for to begin with? Except for programs that you deliberately added there like 7zip, which still isn't possible on w11 according to what he says at 4:10

Hi, I had a question I was curious about. I got a new laptop running windows 11 home and was able to uninstall edge because of the digital marketa act, since I set the region as an eu country on startup.

Now, I did a fresh install of windows 11 lstc via the guide as recommended by a friend, and I apparantly can't do this anymore. I was curious if it was because the lstc iso was US? Does anyone know?
>>
>>109580951
check that your region is currently set to eu, pretty sure you can change it post-install

Getting "INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR (0xA0)" once a day since installing my intel arc b580. Before that I had been using the igpu in my 7600x with zero issues.
Did a clean install of the latest drivers, both in normal mode as well as using DDU. Still happens. The newest intel Driver from a few days ago also doesn't help.

>>
The default group policy delay from WinUtil for security updates is 7 days so I should see the lastest Patch Tuesday update hit my install tomorrow, right? Didn't feel like grabbing it and installing manually the moment it went live, and apparently it's pretty decent, Low Latency Profile for other programs and such.
>>
>>109573266
People are just squeamish about Win11. I was as well, but got bored one day, decided to upgrade. Very little broke, and what broke were my own things, not fundamentals, so it was expected. Worst part was trying to find a good working dark Win32 theme, but I managed to find one. Haven't noticed a difference since, besides being on 11 and noticing certain differences.

The worst thing IMO is that the keyboard layout pop-up is no longer instantaneous and when the Low Latency Profile update happened, it didn't affect it, so when you only tap Win+Space the flyout won't show up. Retarded oversight from Jeetsoft's they haven't rectified yet.

Bluestacks or LDPlayer are your best bets and both are fairly easy to neuter when it comes to their telemetry/ad garbage. Shit like using a DNS like Adguard/Quad9 within the virtual Android network settings, replacing their defaul home screens with something like Lawnchair or Nova Launcher, using Aurora Store or Obtainium to install apps within it, blocking some of the extraneous .exes like the updater/reporter with the firewall.

You fell for the "sign into this app only" box not being out and proud? Sucks for you anon. I finally decided to install Supermium after years of using an old unsupported Chrome version on my W7 chinkpad, only for it to crash after a few hours and it just turns out it is a common problem?
https://github.com/win32ss/supermium/issues/1803
Wasn't the whole point of Supermium to run well on old systems? I have 16gb of ram a similarly sized pagefile, with Chrome I could have literally thousands of opened tabs with the help of extensions like the great sleeper or unloader or something like that.

Why is Chromiums virtual memory usage so high? Even with empty new tabs consumption creeps up rather quickly. I don't care about privacy features if it means I can my retarded tab hoarding adhd spirit free

Can you get KVM/QEMU-level performance on a virtual machine on WIndows?
The best thing I could find is VMWare Workstation with Hyper-V disabled. That means WSL2 wouldn't work, but I guess I could live with that.
>>
>>109592560
>Wew no. Firefox is way worse with out of memory issues.
what utter bullshit
>>
>>109595467
Why does it work worse for you if Hyper-V is enabled? Having it enabled would increase performance to near-native would it not?
>>
>>109595498
I haven't tried turning Hyper-V off yet, but I've read that it works as an extra layer, so if it's enabled, VMWare would have to talk through Hyper-V instead of just using the CPU support for virtualization itself. Is this not a thing?
I've researched this a few months ago, but I'm just now getting to setting it up.
>>
>>109595523
Yes, but hyper-v is the type 1 hypervisor from microsoft, so it's a bit like KVM or Xen. I'm not sure if it's faster or slower than just letting VMware handle virtualization.
>>
>>109595467
You have to disable Hyper-V it runs like absolute shit otherwise.
