I'm considering getting my data hoarding server back up and running after about a year of not using it and want to know if yt-dlp has been fixed yet, because I remember a year ago it stopped working for archiving entire channels which is why I stopped running my server in the first place. I saw someone use some argument that makes yt-dlp use its nightly build instead of the stable build, has that helped with archiving entire channels at a time, or is archiving YouTube still fucked?

I'd test it out myself, but right now I don't have the free time to mess with my server.

but his cpu probably degraded or something. they run quiet high voltages at idle which degrades them esp in serve use. buildzoid documented the issue and narrowed it down to the higher clocked i7s and i9s from the 13th and 14th generation. he had examples from a game developer who found that most of his game crashes came from 13th and 14th gen i7s and i9s. there was also a minecraft server hosting company which had very stock running i9s from the 13th and 14th gen fail just idling 24/7. he also plottet the voltages those cpus run at idle and you can basically think of them as a spectrum of very low running i9s and i7s being not affected while the high running ones are and depending on use (how many hours per day the idle for example) they degrade faster or slower or not at all. i think the server hoster even experimented with turning off e cores and certain p cores to make the servers run again and in some instances it helped while in others it didn't which meant the ring bus was probably burned out on some and not others.

Intel's CPU blowing up isn't new news. It happened like, 2 years ago? So always avoid buying Intel's 13 or 14th gen CPU if it's used. It might have degraded too much. You would need a motherboard that has undervolting features to safely use it. I'm running a 14700K but I undervolted that shit on day 1. Never had a problem with it so far on my main rig. If it ever dies on me I'll be switching to AMD which means new CPU and new motherboard, which sucks.

The microcode was so motherboards stop running at high voltages at default. It's why a lot of people have degraded CPUs. They weren't undervolting it and just ran it stock.
I think the issue is 'fixed' as in they won't degrade anymore because it can now handle voltages within spec. But this ruined a lot of extreme hobbyists that likes to overclock the CPU. And overclocking a CPU always voids warranty anyways.

Storage prices are straight up scalping at this point, right? There's no way even shitty SATA 3 laptop drives are inflated in price stemming from datacenter purchases. A seagate external crapped out on me recently and I was looking to get a 2.5" SATA3 hard disk to slot back in there (relevant: the caddy still works, powers through USB only so only 2.5" will fit and work, and the caddy's adapter is SATA 3 locked) and the least shit prices I've seen in that field is $20, for a refurbished 250GB, 1/4 of the size of the drive that I'm replacing. but yes, it can operate as an HBA (the Dell HBA330 is also an LSI SAS 3008), but the H330 firmware doesnt support it, it only has pseudo-IT mode, which can occasionally make software raid complain, especially proxmox+ZFS.
people often flash the H330 with the HBA330 firmware to turn it into a true HBA. to be honest im not sure if the two cards have any differences other than their firmware.

You can look at examples but if it doesn't make sense to you then don't follow it.
This is what I used when I was the only one using my NAS at home. Then my collection grew and I had to change my folders. Then my family wanted to use it to so it changed again. There's no one and done setup for this.

Best I can tell you is to consolidate your disk into one big drive using mergerfs or something. So you don't have to keep guessing which HDD has what.

Oh and I'd create a top-level /media 'Shared Folder' for your movies, music, TV shows, basically anything that' likely to grooooow to fill the space. I go the old fashioned way and I still print my photos physically. So, I have one digital copy on my NAS, one digital copy on my cold storage backup HDD, one digital copy on another cold storage HDD that's in my parent's house, one physical copy in my closet and one physical copy in my parent's house. This is for photos. If it's a family video I don't have it on any physical media.
Seems really overkill, but I'm not taking any chances.

I've been meaning to scale back my server. I don't need a rack and rack mounted machines and stuff. Been thinking to sell some of them. Right now I think I can make do with one PC (baremetal NAS) and maybe 2-3 mini PCs.
This means I can sell 3 rack mounted PCs, a rack mounted UPS (will just switch to a consumer one like CyberPower), a network switch (just use a 5 or 8 port switch from TP link) and my fuckass huge power bar. Like 8TB in, 2TB out. Is it possible to ensure the writes to the cold storage are completed prior to the cache clearing?

Yes. It will slow down your CMR too, since RAID will split the data and parity between the CMR and the SMR, and the SMR sucks during prolonged writes.

SMR drives work fine in some conditions, but RAID is definitely not one of them. I have one old SMR drive that I've had around in my Unraid server, and in there it's not a big issue because a) Unraid never writes any parity data on the SMR drive, and b) I have an SSD cache to absorb large writes, and the SMR can be filled slowly later as a scheduled overnight job.

I'm getting into proxmox because I want to host more than my home assistant is capable of hosting.
It's a mini pc with a 256gb nvme drives that I plan to host all the vms and containers on and a 4tb (bought before prices went ballistic) nvme drives that i want to use as a NAS drive and storage for frigate and qbittorrent. I want everything those two containers save to be available in the NAS smb share. I also plan to host my music collection on the share it with mpd.
From what I've been told, each container using the drive as a mount point is creating their own virtual disk, so none of the containers are sharing data.
I'm told it's possible to have containers point thier mount point to another container's mount point (albeit unpriveleged), but I don't know how. Should I do this or should I have the other containers just save to the NAS share itself? I'm worried about qbittorrent having write errors.

I saw a bunch of possible options on amazon but apparently 2.5in HDDs with CMR are non-existent, so i'm going to have to go with SMR anyway and "suck up and deal with it" i suppose. I'm not paying these insane prices for SSDs, and I have to go with 2.5in drives due to chassis size constraints.

The host OS will be on two SSDs in RAID 1, i can just also use those for the faster file operations, and the SMR HDDs would be reserved for long-term unlikely to be touched shit with the exception of reads, like media. I think that would be a valid compromise

Ugh I decided that I don't have fuck you money right now so my new network I'm building will be a 100g core switch for stuff like the desktop, the nas, the couple of servers, probably use a breakout cable down to 10g for the Internet feed.
Then the out of money part kinda forced me to get a shitty C3850-12X48U and a 2x 40g module for it, so that will be my general purpose networking.
That will at least give me 12 ports for the APs and a decent amount of 1gbe ports for random garbage.

It just sucks having an 80g link between the core and all the wifi. What if 200 friends come over and all of them want to simultaneously download stuff from the nas while spread evenly across the 10 ish APs? It might not be enough!

Usually you don't want to do that. Passing through individual drives is a pain in the fucking ass. And PCIe passthrough just sucks. It's doable but it's just best practice not to do it. I had an OMV VM in Proxmox and adding new drives was always a pain in the ass. Reading SMART data also didn't work.
If you're using a Supermicro board you can check fan speeds in the IPMI. If not use Grafana or something.

Sure, my own setup looks something like
>/fap/celebs/celebname/IRL
>/fap/celebs/celebname/AI
>/fap/OF/performername/gallery1
>/fap/OF/performername/gallery2

...set up a 'Performer' named celebname and performername, and it'll tag everything as needed, with galleries linked to that individual.

You'll probably need to give it a little thought, but, Stash is more or less built around the idea that there are Studios producing content; there are Performers that feature in that content; there are Galleries which bring together that content; and there are Tags that are, well, generic tags. The way it works is that you create a Studio, or a Performer, or whatever, hit 'auto tag', and it'll look through your filenames and directory names and join things together as needed.

There apparently exist 'stash boxes', which are like public-facing sperg-maintained metadata repos that you can scrape and match up to your own library - so that if you're a freak who actually pays for commercial porn downloads, you can have everything tagged in a jiffy because someone else put in the work tagging up everything on BangBros or whatever ... but I've not bothered with exposing myself like that, and I like to curate my own metadata my own way anyway.

if it doesnt have IPMI or BMC (or the dell server equivalent) then no, but having ECC RAM, dual CPUs and a serial port is sort of indicative that it has something like that but honestly ive never looked into consumer mobos with two CPUs so who the fuck knows. I'd also want it rack-mountable but that just personal preference because i have a rack

But even if all those checks pass, the thermal efficiency on that build is ass and if you have an electricity bill to pay AND you want to run it 24/7, then you can toss at least $50 down the drain every month

Just a VM playground or do you actually need them on 24/7? Same goes for the LLM. If the answer is "no" for both, I'd recommend either using it as a personal desktop (i dont play videogames much nor know if you do so it might be ass) or just building out a home desktop that can manage that. All your jellyfin and torrent requirements (idk about nextcloud ive never looked into it) can likely be handled by something that consumes far less electricity. But thats just me, if you need all that, and local inference 24/7 then go for it i guess

random Stash virtue: noticing a filename looks like a md5 string, then noticing that the filename and the image's actual md5 don't match. select filename, right-click, search the usual suspects (paheal, e621, danbooru, gelbooru) and bingo, md5:%s turns up a hit. Delete the old image, save the original in its place, tag it up with characters and the artist while I'm at it. It's like gardening, lol.
