I've been out of the laptop market for a decade bros
Have to give up my P53s and need to replace it fast
I'm looking at a T14 on ebay. Gen 2 AMD is supposedly best bang for buck but I can get a Gen 3 and get onto ddr5 for $100 more. Or should I just go gen 1 amd?

I can get a gen 3 right now for $325. It's just to hold me over for a year or two while I enter a different career where they might give me a work laptop for all I know.
>>
>>109650080

And if I don't get a work laptop than this is to last me a few years as the work laptop. If I do get a work laptop I can just resale the one I get and only lose like $100 max which is nothing to me.
I'd just be doing basic python/matlab type stuff on it nothing crazy. Was using the p53s as my work laptop and need to return it before I leave next week.

>Wear?
Supposedly it's alright
>Battery health?
At least 90%, but I might replace that as well.
>Is the display 100% srgb?
No, only the 4K display is 100% sRGB, but I'm not going to watch movies or do color stuff on it, I bought it for Uni which is 80% coding and 20% reading scripts because I'm in Comp-Sci.
>Do you need mx450?
Nope. But buying a version without the MX450 would have been more expensive because of the RAM prices. Available units without the MX450 have 16GB of RAM (most often 2x8GB), cost the same as the units with the MX450 and a 16GB Stick costs 100 bucks right now.

I have 14 days to return the thing if I don't like it though.

>>109647662
Also where do I get pic rel? The ones sold on red bubble are trash.
>>
>>109654219
Interesting, is it refurbished?but I'm guessing if the outside looks good the inside is as well... Probably... Hopefully...

Replacing an at least 90% health battery reminds me of a sin called vanity.

>Only the 4k display has 100%
Yeah you're right I wanted to really say that it should be at least 72% NTSC because I used an HP laptop with a shit TN screen and it was fucking depressing just looking at that shit. But since yours is IPS it should be ok enough.

>Mx450 is cheaper
Sure, but just know that it can another thing you will have to juggle if shit goes wrong, while not being of much use most of the time.

I got my t14 g3 for the price
I7 1270p
24gb ram
512gb m2
400 low nit touchscreen
Mx550
83% battery
Condition is excellent

My only regret is not being able to find amd models at a reasonable price in the fuckass eu. And the fact that I miss the numpad a lot. So basically an amd t16 is my 10/10 laptop probably, (if everything else is right)

>My only regret is not being able to find amd models at a reasonable price in the fuckass eu.
THIS. Did Lenovo just not release the AMD models in large enough quantities in the EU? Does Intel bribe European business customers? Are EU resellers somehow more aware of how superior AMD was during those years than their Burger counterparts? Make it make sense.

I mean I got conflicting information, on the phone they said at least 90%, on the website it says that I can expect a battery life that is not significantly impaired compared to brand new.
>Yeah you're right I wanted to really say that it should be at least 72% NTSC because I used an HP laptop with a shit TN screen and it was fucking depressing just looking at that shit
Yeah, my T540p has a TN panel and it sucks.
>But since yours is IPS it should be ok enough.
Dunno, my W541 also has an IPS screen and it also sucks. I'm considering doing a panel swap to something like a B156HAN10.2 or ATNA56AC02.
>Sure, but just know that it can another thing you will have to juggle if shit goes wrong, while not being of much use most of the time.
I'm aware and I'll send it right back if it screws with me. Thanks for the heads up though!

The equivalent option would have been the T16 Gen1 and I really would have preferred those because I'm a sucker for 16:10, but those are still at 1000€ which is insane.

One is a 15" mobile workstation (which I considered buying yesterday), the other is a 14" office device.
If you got a desktop, get the T14.
>>
>>109654933
I don't have a desktop, I want to replace my old Legion that is making more heat than a thermal plant.

I would use the laptop for programming and for scrolling the web with trannyfox.

I'd like it to be relatively comfy. I have a large 32inch 2k monitor which I use as a main screen, and my laptop as a secondary screen where I type as well, so a good keyboard is useful. I don't care that much about battery, but I'm used to this piece of shit.

Anyway, I've been mostly looking T14, but maybe some P model might not be too bad, I'm in EU.

>Wut

>Make it make sense
Don't worry bro I sat down and analyzed the mechanisms of corporate Thinkpad procurement just for you

Lenovo did release the T14 G3 AMD in Europe—it wasn't exclusively an American model. The problem is that distribution was clearly much worse than for the Intel version.

A few things probably explain it:

AMD was positioned more as the "alternative" enterprise platform. Intel had Thunderbolt 4, vPro, and some platform advantages that corporate IT departments cared about.

The AMD version was arguably the better machine in several important ways. Ryzen 6000 gave you 8C/16T, a much better iGPU, and excellent efficiency.

Lenovo's AMD configurations were often less common in reseller inventory. Intel was the safe default SKU that companies and distributors stocked in much larger quantities.

Europe wasn't completely Intel-only—the AMD T14 G3 absolutely existed there. It just seems to have been produced and distributed in much smaller quantities depending on the country.

Business procurement is also incredibly conservative. If an organization has standardized on Intel for docks, management, deployment, validation, etc., "AMD is faster and more efficient" doesn't necessarily convince them to change platforms.

And the really annoying part is that the good AMD configuration existed. You could get the Ryzen 7 6850U, 400-nit 1920×1200 low-power display, etc. It wasn't some mythical US-only configuration.

So I wouldn't go as far as "Intel bribed European businesses"

The more boring explanation is:

Lenovo treated Intel as the default corporate platform and AMD as an alternative SKU, even during the generation where AMD was arguably the better laptop CPU.

And because corporate procurement overwhelmingly bought the default Intel configurations, European resellers ended up with tons of Intel machines and comparatively few AMD ones.

Hope that clears it up twin

>Yeah, my T540p has a TN panel and it sucks.
In my experience, the screen specs that actually affect your quality of life are the panel type (OLED > IPS >>>>> TN), PPI (around 160 is ideal for me, but it depends on your eyesight), color coverage (100% sRGB is the minimum for me), brightness (300 nits is fine indoors, but I recommend 400 nits minimum outdoors), and contrast (mostly matters for video and games in an environment with good lighting, not so much for office work), roughly in that order.

Sounds more like inflation, the same can be said about everything. (value of money going down = the perception of commodities appreciating in value).

You're looking at ok increases for the CPU and no real increase until you hit the A4000 on the GPU. A3000 P15 go for around 1100 to 1400€; there are none A4000 P15 Gen2 being sold on ebay right now.

Pull the PSREF for a ThinkPad and just take educated guesses, there's clues scattered that in 9/10 cases tell you what spec you got.

Honestly, the current AMD CPUs that go into ThinkPads are absolute dogshit.

With ThinkPads I don't really worry too much about the CPU, I just want something that runs fine and that's that.

It's an okay ultrabook if you can find one in a 16GB configuration, and for a good price. It's otherwise outclassed by any of its modern counterparts with regards to its price to performance ratio--obviously. 8th-gen models are ridiculously overpriced for some reason. This doesn't just apply to the T480, for which it is understandable in light of its universal popularity (shilling, or otherwise exaggerated admiration), it applies to all systems of that generation. Which is odd, since as I mentioned, they are otherwise "outdated"--though not entirely obsolete, mind you.

Framework laptops are shaping up to be the GOATs, spearheaded by the 13 Pro. Modern Thinkpads (T, X, P series) are still quite decent. The only thing they lack compared to Thinkpads of old is UltraBay and several legacy ports, both of which nobody uses anymore unless you're into retroshit.

>>109659707
frameworks build quality sucks. i was not impressed when i handled one. they need to be using more glues and fasteners. and stronger materials. they put repairability before structural strength. this is a problem most laptops have though. I would skip over carbons due to soldered RAM and get something like a T470 for about $100 or less if you're on a budget and want a badass Ultrabook, mainly because SO-DIMM slots, also the early X1 carbon was like 0.74 inch thick, barely even thinner than a T470's 0.78 in thick and you get a T series, you get the ultrabook benefits without the ultra compromises.

I don't have an NVIDIA GPU which is annoying when I want to GPU accelerate something and find out it only supports AMD GPU if you follow this 3290158 step guide so having a decent NVIDIA GPU bolted onto a nice laptop would be a good thing to have, but on the other hand I don't truly need to do such things that often to justify the expense, but on the other other hand I'm extremely curious, I've never owned a workstation-tier Thinkpad and I can easily afford it or even buy a maxed out P series new, but I don't like wasting money for *no* reason,

Not the guy you are replying to, but I was wondering about getting the same thing, however;
https://www.quora.com/Why-hasnt-a-magnetic-breakaway-design-become-the-standard-for-USB-C-cables-yet
> A magnetic breakaway cable might save your laptop from a fall, but as it tears away at an angle, 48 volts can surge into a 5-volt data line—instantly frying your device's motherboard.

Because of this severe risk, the tech industry has refused to embrace a magnetic breakaway standard for USB-C. The core issue is pin density. An older magnetic connector like MagSafe 2 used exactly five large, widely spaced pins dedicated almost entirely to power and ground. USB-C is a vastly more complex standard. It packs 24 microscopic pins into an opening roughly the size of a tic-tac. These pins handle power, ground, configuration data, and extremely high-speed data lanes all in close proximity.

So I decided not to risk it. I did find pic rel though. But idk if that’s safe either.

My T510 would like a word with you. WWAN has been whitelisted at least since Lenovo took over. WLAN was also whitelisted until 2015 or so.

I think the best upgrades without losing too much build quality or modularity would be T480s or Yoga 370. Everything newer is either much bigger and heavier, has a mostly plastic case, or has everything but the SSD soldered.

Honorable mentions: T460s/T470s (but they have two small batteries instead of one large one for no reason), T460p/T470p (mostly plastic but still sturdy; noticeably heavier)

Well you already spelled it out: My brain gets dopamine when buying things.
I know a laptop that was almost 10k new must have some fancy quirks inside, but it's still 1.5 k for that config.
Which is right in the ballpark of a much more usable P14s Gen 6/P16s Gen 4 and P1 gen 7, which feature the same GPU series as the newer ones I mentioned.

They probably sent the wrong model as they give you choices what works and what not. I bought one with working ports but rough shape. The fact that one of the USB-C ports does not work tells me that it is not the same device I ordered.

I'll just send it back, they even included a return label free of charge.

You can remove the camera but built into the same flat flex cable is the light sensor which determines when the lid is closed, so if you remove the camera the screen doesn't turn off when you close the lid. This is pretty shit, but the laptop has a shutter anyway, and realistically microphones/speakers are more privacy invading than cameras.

How are you guys recommending these t480, T14 gen 1/2 when they have these really horrible viewing angels, bad contrast, and low peak brightness. Same can be said about dell/hp versions.
It it really fucking bad. It is only like 10-20% of the models that have decent panels built in.

You get thinkpads for repairability and reliability and the fact that corporations throw away tons of perfectly working machines like trash, and it crashes the second hand prices, so by buying them you get more computer per dollar.

>What you need, what you want?
Yeah so I have a Legion that I haven't really maintained that well, and it is slow to load at startup, slow to open terminal after boot, slow to open Firefox, etc. so I suspect that the HDD is also bad, but I'm not an expert by any means.

I just use it for web browsing and programming in my free time. I have a Dell at work, but I don't really like it. We had P14s (I think, it didn't have a GPU) at the last company I worked at, not sure what Gen, but it was really great, so I want to go into Thinkpads or try to repair this old piece of shit.

The battery is also terrible on the Legion, it is very heavy and large and the charger is also heavy. I don't like this laptop at all, but I suppose it has better performance than any refurbished Thinkpad under ~700€.

I've had a 17 inch laptop in the past back when laptops were chonky and very fucking heavy, so I'm quite aware of the pros and cons of Big Laptop.
The P series nomenclature is quite confusing. Like P16 makes sense, workstation-tier laptop with 16 inch screen, but what's the difference with P16s? Is it "slimmer"? What does the slimness sacrifice? And wtf is P1? Also why are there so many models with just integrated graphics? Isn't dedicated graphics the reason you go for P series anyways?
If I ever pull the trigger on buying something like that to satisfy my autism, I would be willing to pay up to a ballpark of 1k euros.
>>
>>109671636
Just drop in a replacement panel of your choice costs like 60 to 100 bucks. That's literally the whole point of the 2nd hand ThinkPad market. Usually shit is so cheap that you can afford to mess around and be creative or build your own without ruining something expensive, if you're in the US the T480 is actually the best value laptop you can get because they're just 100 bucks.
The fact that they're damn reliable is a godsent on top for students who know their stuff.

>>109671920
>Yeah I might do that.
Try TG PhaseSheet instead of paste. It's like 10€ for one application but it seems to be worth it.

Like for a ThinkPad? Right now high performance stuff is expensive, so as I said earlier: stick with your Legion for now.
>Yeah so I have a Legion that I haven't really maintained that well, and it is slow to load at startup, slow to open terminal after boot, slow to open Firefox, etc. so I suspect that the HDD is also bad, but I'm not an expert by any means.
HDD? Your Legion should not have an HDD but an SSD. Check the remaining life on that thing, SSDs wear out with every write.
>I suppose it has better performance than any refurbished Thinkpad under ~700€.
You won't find similar performance until you hit 1600€ and at that point you can buy new I guess.

It's got a HDD and an SSD. / is mounted on SSD, and /home is on the HDD. But now that I think about it, I'm not sure which one is to blame.

Yes, slimmer, lighter, smaller cooling system, diff. MoBo: P14s and P16s share the same one. P1 was the workstation version of the X1 extreme, which was meant to compete with dell XPS15, which also had a workstation version.
Yeah I really don't know why so many spec their P series without a GPU, maybe it has a slightly improved cooling system compared to the T series, which allows for greater thermal overhead when running prolonged CPU intensive tasks or something support related.

Sure it's chink and the bit selection is not the best, but the driver MOGS the puny iFixit driver.
Get a anti-static silicon mat, a magnetic bowl and a magnetic mat for screws as well and you should be set.
Probably get a thermal pad kit and some evergreen thermal paste like MX-6 for common repastes.
For cleaning you should have non-static brushes, an air blower / electric duster or if you have the moneys an air compressor with a nozzle, tissues, smooth microfiber cloths and isopropyl alcohol.
K&F Concept has most of the gear I use for cleaning my stuff (glasses, phone, laptop, camera, etc.), but they're actually selling camera gear (https://www.amazon.de/stores/page/C10BD14D-C070-4C11-9032-BD9AA57112B1)

G6 is more expensive, I think they also put in a lower class, but more efficient iGPU on Ryzen 7 350 models.
So your only option to get a beefy iGPU on a G6 P14s would be to take the Motherboard out of a P16s G4 with a Ryzen 9 Pro.
You could also look for the intel P14s G4/G5, specifically the ones that feature Quadro A500 dedicated graphics.
I just wait until someone lists the right model on my local Craigslist alternative and buy it from the seller directly, but be careful and check everything before you pay, look at their reviews. I'm looking to get a very, cheap, low power, and small laptop/netbook to use as a chatpad and the like.

So far, I've been using my upgraded elitebook 2570p, but that's more heat and noise than i'd prefer for the basic tasks this would be for. I previously had an X220 and that was even warmer and louder for less.
So far, the smallest low power device I could find with a decent keyboard and is recent enough to do what I need is the dell latitude 2120. Any other similar x86 laptops or netbooks with a non-chiclet style keyboard out there that can still be found for reasonable prices?
>>
>>109677052
That's pretty hard to find Anon, the non chiclet era of business laptops really go as new as Sandy Bridge on Thinkpads, unfortunately the stuff you want, like 15w ultrabook processors pretty much all have chiclet keyboards, but what about chiclet laptops Anon? I think going to something like even a kaby lake or Coffee Lake chiclet thinkpad would be a beautiful machine for chatting, I had a standard 35W ivy bridge like what would've come in your 2570p, and the reduciton in heat and power consomption going to an ultrabook processor was amazing, also the laptop weighs a lot loss because it's thinner, you're not lugging around a DVD drive that you may or may not need, you should give it a try, check out eBay Kaby lake and Coffee lake laptops that are cheap enough, you'd be surprised how much better the performance is for the power the ultra low chips use, just smokes Ivy Bridge, I cannot suggest Anons to use older technology just to get a keyboard.
>>
>>109673276
Why have both a magnetic bowl and a magnetic mat for screws?

Not sure if this is the right thread anymore, but what is a thermal pad kit and how is it used? I though you just apply thermal paste to the component and it sticks to its heatsink?
>>
>>109677103
I currently use an ultrabook with a 13th gen i7 for daily, an elitebook 2570p with an i7-3632QM for tinkering and ripping, and a thinkpad t60p with 2gb of DDR2 running windows XP (offline) for actual at-home productivity.
this in no way would be a serious use machine. if it were to do anything performance heavy, it'd be play fallout 2.
I do a bit of laptop refurb and reselling, sitting on about 30 laptops in total, so i can safely say an atom that shitty would handle the programs i'd throw at it, so performance isn't the concern.
so far, that latitude is still looking like the one ticking the most boxes. Small, low power, luggable, cheap, good keyboard, can still buy batteries for them. My alternative would've been a cheapo jailbroken chromebook running linux, but those keyboards often aren't very good.

Just got my first Thinkpad (T14 Gen2 AMD), is there a general idea of what's bloat in picrel? https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t14-gen-2-type-20xk-20xl/downloads/driver-list
I checked the wiki but the driver page last edit was in 2010. Windows Update pre-installed the following (or at least they can be seen under the apps & features menu): AMD Radeon Software, Dolby Access, Realtek Audio Console, Synpatics Fingerprint Reader Preboot Manager, Synaptics TouchPad, Synaptics TrackPoint.

On my previous laptop (asus) I wouldn't download any driver from the OEM website because it'd make many things worse and I'm not qualified to identify the cause. Don't get stuck too much on me using windows please, I'm installing linux on my previous laptop to goof around / get familiar with it but just don't feel like daily driving it blind.
>>
>>109679703
idk just install the stuff you use and ignore the stuff you don't fingerprint is bloat for some and not for others BIOS and display drivers are probably the ones you should never skip

It does, MXM 3.0 Type-A, you can put a Type-B in if you're feeling sporty, and don't want the CDROM drive.

/g/ I have an issue with my PRecision 7560 that will force me to replace the motherboard, I have the option of upgrading from the 6-core Xeon w-11855 to the 8-core Xeon w-11955, should I do it? I do a fir bit of gaming but I'd like the 8-core setup for Photoshop and Lightroom and media processing.
>>
>>109681349
For gaming, there will be no difference. Multicore, you're getting a 15-20% boost. It's not a life-changing difference. But having two additional cores doing background shit may make some noticeable improvement in everyday user experience when multitasking.

What's the delta in cost? If it's wildly more expensive I'd pass. You know your use case best tho. Might be worth it if you're committed to the machine long term.

Man I hate laptop clips. Always a pain to work on, and I've taken the back cover off my 25 enough that more than a few of them are broken now despite my best efforts to guitar pick them lose. But with the 2280 out of there now I don't really have a reason to open it ever again.

Putting in the 2242 (red) was pretty annoying, the clearances on the frankenpad are tight enough already and the specific model I chose had a tough time fitting with the mounting bracket. Got there eventually though. 2280 installation was easy although I had to grab a spare screw since the board didn't come with one. While I had the keyboard off I figured I'd align the 2.5" SATA while I could easily see the connectors.

Hmm. My CMOS battery might be a little too thick, keyboard felt like it had a little too much interference sliding back in. Thinking back on it I guess the 3M pad on the back was likely the real problem, that seemed way thicker than what I've normally seen on OEM CMOS batteries.

Figured I'd toss some more stickers on the bottom for fun. Finally using this Lain sticker I've had for years now, thought it was appropriate. It's nice seeing that the old OEM laptop labels are still on the chassis, the Windows key sticker's still on the RAM cover all these years later.

Well, it's way too late for this and I give up for now. Been tearing my hair out these past few hours over the 2242 and 2.5" drives not being recognized. I was eventually able to install Mint onto the 2242 after placing it in the 2280 slot, and while it will boot while inside the 2280 slot it won't boot while in the 2242 slot so I suspect that it's not being read. Haven't even done anything with the 2.5" yet but I suspect it's just not being read as well.

2280 and 2.5" are currently outside of the system, figured I'd grab a neofetch from the live USB. Thankfully all the RAM is properly recognized.

Dear lord it's 4:30 AM. Thankfully I had nothing going on today but damn.
