i tried for 5.8 and 5.2, but that requires quite a bit more voltage and i dont think my air cooler can hang at that point. Settled for 5.7 and 5.1, both core types staying under 1.3v, and a temperature limit of 90c. It can stay cool enough to maintain clocks for games, but in cinebench or other heavy workloads it is going to throttle.

You got a point about everyone misidentifying that LG 4K monitor's panel.
But LG's 4K LCD gaming monitors in general are known to have QC issues.
I looked into a $400 4K LG LCD when I was searching for monitors to add in the OP, user reviews were flooded with similar complaints
Even RTING's store bought LG 4K monitor review sample broke down in less than 3 years.

Check "Sold & Shipped" by section, I'd make sure it's either Crucial, Amazon, or very well known third party sellers (brick and mortar stores).
If a third party seller is offering that kit, it might not qualify for Crucial RMA refunds if you need it (depends on specific seller).
Beach Camera in the US for example is a well known physical electronics store with a reliable Amazon Marketplace & eBay account.

How can I tell? It's an ASUS HERO Z790 MAXIMUS, and from reading the specs, I should have enough x8/x8 on the CPU slots, and x4 on the chipset slot, even with all the M.2's installed - FWIW, installing 1 card on CPU slot, and 1 on the chipset slot (With the second CPU slot left empty) doesn't work either

Also, localAI
>>
>>109673647
If you are any serious into local AI then make sure you get mobo that supports bifurcation and dedicated 24 cpu lanes. This is the core thing to be able to do multi gpu setups for LLM's as the your latency will be low as long as you dont use the chipset lanes. You cant get away wthout 16 x lanes with cards and adapters but you cant fix the latency if the mobo is cheapen out and connecting an nvme m4 lowers the 2nd pci slot. This can allow you to easily keep upgrading that same pc or get a cheap workstation card with lower bandwitdth and still dont crash and burn as you just dump kv cache and the later weights into it
>>
>>109673647
to keep your expectations in check you won't run any sort of reasonable local AI on this. I have a similar setup albeit with 64GB RAM and an Ultra 7 265k, you can expect like 10tk/s on a Q3 or really shitty Q4 quant of Qwen3.8-27B and around 60k context
>>
>>109673610
Not really.
You should stop at 65535, but it's not worth re-running all those stability tests going from 65111.
tREFI values this high usually requires active cooling for the memory sticks (120/140mm fan).
tREFI 32767 or 40959 won't require active memory cooling, and you don't lose much performance at these settings vs. 65535.

>Why those values?
Mostly schizo shit. Multiples of 8192 minus one.
The memory array is divided in blocks requiring 8192 refresh cycles to complete a full refresh cycle window.
Minus one accounts for zero based indexing
>>

Talk me out of tapping into my cash savings for this monitor.

I'm already kind of pissed because researching and trying to decide between ordering this or the TCL 27C2A means it won't be ready for pickup until Monday, as opposed to Saturday for the weekend where I would have been able to try it in the real world.

>>109673827
VT3 isn't enough to validate stability.
Your system needs to test a variety of memory access patterns.
TestMem5: Anta777 Extreme, Absolut, DDR5 Intel, 1usmus v3
Prime95: Large FFT
OCCT: CPU + RAM test, new DDR5 heat soak, TestMem5 extreme emulation, Linpack
Karhu (paywall)

Go to the BIOS and confirm there's sane CPU power limits set before you run some of these tests (125W long duration PL1, 159W short duration PL2).

Performance could be fine if the system doesn't need + reserve over 32GB memory when you're gaming.
Article below is a bit old, but it says performance depends whether your motherboard supports asymmetric dual channel mode.

Supposing I want to chase CRT simulation on emulators (4th and 5th gen consoles) instead of AAA whenever I'm not working or general browsing. Acer Nitro XV275K or Dell 27 Plus S2725QS. The latter is within my $320 budget (and may get a discount during Labor Day, hopefully) but the low nits may interfere with the best shaders unless there's a workaround I don't know about. The former is a small ways above my budget but can reach the optimal nits with HDR on. However, reviews on Amazon are spotty ranging from dead pixels to ghosting. Any input from those who use these monitors for both general purpose and emulation (with CRT shaders)?

That Acer miniLED might be disappointing anyway.
The Dell 120 Hz isn't exactly a fast response time monitor, it's for workstations.
Some newer VA monitors might have better response times than the S2725QS.
>>
>>109674245
I want the angles to stay as consistent as my ASUS VS239, so VA is out of the question. I have no intention on AAA gaming on the PC. Don't want haloing when emulating (if that's even possible on 16-32 bit stuff) so I'm leaning closer to the Dell despite hearing mediocre feedback on its HDR and low nit count. What ultimately matters is if discounts happen on Labor Day. Same day delivery is also an issue but that's for me to work out.

Retard here. Is there any single definitive RAM stability test? I've gone through five RAM kits in the last couple of months.
I had a kit I thought was stable because it passed memtest86 for 10 hours but it was still unstable, and testing with y-cruncher showed it crashing out in ten minutes or less at JEDEC
I had another kit I thought was stable because I ran memtest86 and y-cruncher for eight hours each on it, but it was still unstable and crashed out under OCCT at JEDEC
I had ANOTHER kit that was stable on OCCT and y-cruncher but not memtest86
Now I'm working with two 2x8gb sets (32gb total), same model, one manufactured in 2018 and one from this month. It's done 3 hours of OCCT, 6 hours of y-cruncher and 9 hours of memtest86 with XMP on and hasn't reported a single error. I just don't fucking trust any of those tests. What do you guys think, is it good enough? Or is there a better test I can be running?
>>
>>109674285
>Dell despite hearing mediocre feedback on its HDR and low nit count
It's essentially an SDR monitor. The HDR quality isn't good enough to be used.
>>
>>109674330
I suppose anyone here wouldn't know how to tweak the CRT shaders to compensate for the sub-1000 nits? Crazy you have to get such a pricey monitor to make an old game look even older still but God knows I'm not returning to AAA anytime soon. Also note that I'm upgrading from the VS239 so even with its flaws (and budget breaking price) the Acer may prove to be substantial overall. Not like I'm familiar with HDR. Even my TV doesn't have that.

Isn’t 9800x3d overkill for a 5070ti?
>>
>>109674323
>Is there any single definitive RAM stability test?
No. There's too much variety in DRAM read & write behavior.
Even 3DMark stress tests managed to expose DRAM timing instability for my system (DRAM -> CPU -> PCIe bus -> VRAM interaction).

>I had a kit I thought was stable because it passed memtest86 for 10 hours
MemTest86 isn't considered to be stressful enough to catch XMP/EXPO/OC instabilities.
This test is used to catch defective memory modules or to move on to other potential sources of instability (CPU, motherboard, poorly inserted memory module, etc)

You need to make sure the CPU is 100% stable before you run any stress tests because the CPU is the component that is checking for memory errors (for non-ECC sticks).

>It's done 3 hours of OCCT, 6 hours of y-cruncher and 9 hours of memtest86 with XMP on and hasn't reported a single error.
>is it good enough?
Those 9 hours of Memtest86 unfortunately doesn't mean much.
3 hour OCCT + 6 hour y-cruncher depends on the specific tests you ran.
If it cycled through all y-cruncher tests for 6 hours, it's okay (not definitive). I'd run VT3 exclusively for 1~2 hours (make sure IMC & SoC related voltages are @ safe levels).
Try running OCCT Linpack for 1~2 hours if you can, it can catch some memory instabilities.

I can't for the life of me get EXPO or XMP working on this new build.
- BIOS on latest version
- EXPO DDR5-6000 or XMP DDR5-6000 selected in AsRock DRAM OC profile
- Cleared CMOS and tried again
- Reseated RAM, tried booting one stick at a time in various slots
- Verified RAM is on the AsRock mobo QVL list

One notable thing is that I got one stick in one slot to boot with 6000 MT/s once and only once. All other times it just falls back to 4800 speeds. Any ideas? The VDDCR_SOC value is set to 1.20V when I select the EXPO profile where the RAM is listed as 1.25V, but even manually changing that to the correct value seems to have no effect.

I've never used an AssRock motherboard before, but most BIOS have a way to set your RAM to whatever speed you want. If you can't get the preset profile to work, but find the RAM speed setting in the BIOS and set it to 6000.

Yeah I checked the QVL and it's there. I contacted AsRock support and so far they're just telling me my Ryzen 5 8600G doesn't support 6000 but isn't that the whole point of XMP/EXPO?

>>109675155
The profile sets it to 6000 so manually selecting 6000 is the same thing. It always falls back to 4800.
>>
>>109675206
>The profile sets it to 6000 so manually selecting 6000 is the same thing. It always falls back to 4800.
You're clearly missing the point.
There could be something wrong with the preset profile itself.
Which is why you should try setting it manually.

It takes 2 seconds to do, and it will tell you if the problem is the RAM itself, or the presets.

AsRock Support gave me something after I continued pressing and I can't tell if they're trolling me or not. This is what they said:

1) Go to BIOS/OC Tweaker to enable EXPO or XMP profile.
2) Go to BIOS/OC Tweaker to set [DRAM Voltage] to [1.4V].
3 Go to BIOS/OC Tweaker/DRAM Configuration to loss (sic) the primary DRAM timing a little bit to try.
For example;
if your tCL tRCRDRD tRCDWR tRP tRAS is 16-18-18-18-36; please adjust it to 18-20-20-20-42 to try.
if your tCL tRCRDRD tRCDWR tRP tRAS is 18-22-22-22-42; please adjust it to 20-24-24-24-48 to try.
4) Press [F10] to save the settings.

Isn't 1.4V like way too much?

8gb sticks are using memory chips that are connected to a 16 bit lane instead of the usual 8 bits per chip
because its physically different, the motherboard's bios has to have preset settings for the ram and if it's not programmed properly, it will not be able to initialize and run that ram at high speeds or low timings. and 8gb chips are fairly niche up until the ramageddon so there's a higher chance for it to be poorly supported by board vendors whereas 2x16gb 6000cl30 has been the bog standard performance tier ram since 2022 and support for it is already pretty stable

That person suggesting Intel to you is almost certainly pointing you in the direction of the 270K. It IS the many-cores value king at the moment. It’s also the singled threaded king. AMD’s only advantage is x3d which is only useful with a high end GPU running 1080p or very specialized games like Factorio.

Next gen will be really interesting because intel is adding a better implementation of x3d (but way more expensive) and apx while zen 6 is supposedly fixing their memory controller and latency issues and running at higher clock speeds

Game devs know the exact specs of the PS5 so can code and optimise specifically for the hardware. For the PC they have to code a general version which works on a potato PC and many other variations so it cant be coded anywhere near as efficiently

if anyone plans on overclocking their ram I can vouch for using windows to go on a thumb drive (unless you're proficient with linux, because as you can imagine read and write speeds were pretty shit and a lighter os would be better)

I read from here and reddit that microsoft dropped support and I might encouter problems, but I didn't get any. maybe enterprise windows is better in that regard
I had internet connectivity disabled from start up so windows update wouldn't bother me, and just installed whatever files I needed on my phone and transfered them over to windows with a usb cable

to the next gpu release it would have at minimum held same price or double in price (see all past 90 series gpus recently, see 5090 price)
so every gpu upgrade should be near free or maybe even free and platform upgrades only upgrading cpu until next major platform swap when your cpu is starting to get that old make sense
this hobby should be near free in all reality if you do this
display wise at worst you you have to wait several years before anything crazy happens too so
oled tv for hdr
monitor for high hz
but now is the worst possible time of course

You're most likely going to waste a lot of time trying to find higher than JEDEC speed & timings that works for all those sticks with worse performance than 6000 CL30.
There won't be much benefit since the 16GB modules will set the performance bottleneck.
That memory config will run fastest when the system doesn't require over 4x 16GB DRAM (utilized + allocated).
Reasons explained >>109674150

You should only add those sticks when you actually need over 64GB DRAM.

New stripe RGB QD-OLED panels with higher maximum brightness (350 nits minimum full screen SDR brightness).
That 350 nits brightness figure is the minimum requirement. Most of these new panels could reach 400 nits, which invalidates "OLED isn't as bright as my edge lit LCD" takes.

>>
>>109678753
Its actually worse than that, 2 of the motherboards that didn't fail on me, had weird problems too.

Like the AM1 Asus rog i had, b350-F, half of the sata ports were DOA, sure, there was 8x of them, so it didn't matter, but it was weird that half were dead. Otherwise it worked great, no complaints.
The MSI x570 tomahawk had an audio problem i was never able to solve, i could use a headset with a mic no problem, everything worked out of the box, i went through multiple headsets over the years aswell, all worked great. But i could NEVER get a set of speakers or a tower speaker to output audio. I could adjust the settings and test until the cows came home, nothing worked, every system on the pc, every driver, said the speakers would be connected and working, but zero audio came out.

same speakers on my x870 tomahawk work fine, out of the box. That was the warranty one as the first x870 tomahawk i got wouldn't flash and wouldn't boot. The pc tech guy couldn't get it to flash or boot either. Second one was a warranty-repair one, but it worked fine and does to this day.

Sure, for some of them it was me stuffing up the ram settings, and the mobo refusing to boot afterwards, but i wasn't referring to myself, i've heard of more stories about bugged, faulty or outright broken/DOA mobos than i do other pc components, the only exceptions being 5090s and their shitty 12-slot psu connectors.

Honestly it's luck of the draw for anything to make it 10 years.
Especially for things like motherboards and GPUs.

You can pay more but even the manufacturer isn't willing to warrant the literal highest-end board a femtosecond longer compared to the most bottom barrel board they sell.

"Long term build" in my opinion is treating certain components as disposable no matter how much you pay for them initially. My NAS has an entire spare Mobo even though it's already a server motherboard that should be reliable. Same with PSU. If it goes out I have a pin compatible one already I can just plug in.
You have no idea if you'll be able to buy the same components years down the line.

With my main PC, even tho it's custom water cooled, board swaps should be like 30 min with the way I'm going to have it set up with most of that time just moving the block/CPU/RAM. I do have a spare mobo already but it's likely I'll upgrade before the mobo becomes a problem.

>I'm looking for a bit more to run the new qwen MoE model, but maybe my best bet is to just resell both kits and buy two identical 2x32 kits with the proceeds.
Test the performance of all four sticks at stock settings, see if you can tolerate the speed before you go through the hassle of selling them.
I'd set the 2x32GB sticks in A2/B2, the 2x16GB in A1/B1.

Do you not understand what Crucial is?
Crucial is very specifically the retail segment of business where they sell DIMMs directly to consumers.

However this does not include Micron products (DIMMs or modules) sold to OEMs which produce consumer systems or modules sold to other DIMM vendors like Corsair, G.skill, etc.

If Micron is not in the "consumer" business then basically no one is as you can't buy Samsung or Sk Hynix DIMMs directly and get warranty support as an end user.

No.
https://cultists.network/9590/modern-vrms-are-stupid/

If you want to nerd out about VRMs, use the AM5 motherboard spreadsheet and find the VRM column.
1 high / 1 low VRM configs tend to be less efficient (higher resistance) and generate more heat. They're fine for low to moderate current loads.
Those should still be fine for gaming on a single CCD X3D CPU, but I'd buy one with a VRM heatsink.

The 20-30k rpm delta fans used in server chassis are responsible for enabling that
Also most server CPUs have FIVR and run fully on >1.8v meaning they're pulling way less amps than consumer CPUs

I'm not sure if they are still doing that. Their statement says Micron are only selling to enterprise now. Is Enterprise DRAM the same as consumer DRAM chips? I want to know if companies making consumer ram now really are still buying and using micron chips. Are the most recent ram kits still using micron chips? I will find out

personally, I think it tarnishes the dlss brand.
it's a filter, like reshader or something, that halves your performance. dlss is associated with upscaling that improves fps without reducing image quality.

Opening up /g/ to third worlders who think a low PPI screen like a TV is acceptable as a computer monitor was a tragic mistake.

Not sure why they had to use DLSS considering that DLAA has a different branding for a different application.
>>
>>109680495
>asking for monitor advice
monitors are displays, tvs are displays, they are essentially the same tool
the only reason why tvs were shunned was because they were slow pieces of shit compared to monitors in lcd form (see current state of VA tvs)
then oled came along and saved large format gaming, in fact, oled tvs were the go to oled displays as a cope because oled monitors were not yet out
but they were all of them deceived... since monitors were severely brightness gimped, all you got was more hz and a shittier firmware
and so.. people returned to the tv pill
they are a viable display
just make more room to the display

if your reaction times are the same, and your distance to the corner is the same, and you approach at the same speed, the guy with the higher hz will win, unless the distance makes you nearly invisible on a lower resolution monitor (a rare situation indeed)
>>
this is basically the biggest secret in gaming:
720p or even lower, if you aren't getting good fps.

afaik none of the vidya toobers point this out.

say you're at 480p. at least you can see to melee

720p with 3x integer scaling is 2160p, as well. It looks kinda blocky, but it's remediable for a console game.

>>109680902
res will definitely go up once hw will be able to handle it, there is just much more games that can run 500 at 1080p compared to 500 at 4k, and personally id choose 240 at 1440p over 120 at 4k 75% of the time

imo buy multiple displays from store with good return policy and keep what you like
