What do you do when they won't hire anyone for you? I maintain a monorepo at work which has grown to become pretty central to the company's revenue. the repo I wrote is the frontend for the product I designed. That product is now the main thing that the company markets itself as. previously our website said "We are a marketing analytics company" and now it says "we are a thingamabob company" (thingamabob being the product I designed). It's maybe 40,000 lines of code, 90% of which were written by me, and has been fully refactored from scratch 3 times now, so it's more like ~100k lines of code ever written, with some users on older versions I need to keep track ofI know LOC doesn't really translate to effort, but across 5 different packages targeting 3 or 4 different end user platforms, I have to keep the entire state of this product in my head at all times, and I feel like I'm at the limit of what one person can reasonably be responsible for.

What should I do as a manager if my direct report has started acting very stupid? I know he's been acting because he went from being a rockstar employee to someone who can't seem to do a single thing by himself. Almost every task he'll forward it to me and ask "what do I do here?", anytime I ask for his input or advice on something he'll be "I dunno, looks okay to me!". In office, I rarely see him at his desk but when he is, he's usually muttering something but I have no idea what it is. Most of his research task I keep getting one word answers, like if I ask him can you research on X he'll be like "Looks doable from the documentation" and if I ask him to test it, he'll be like "Yeah I think it works according to the documentation". Any idea what to do here? I'm genuinely confused why he's been acting this way because he won't open up.

It's fucking over. I had a very decent job working remotely earning low six figures in europe; they got acquired by fagman and I was relocated into a position that was basically hell. I only lasted 6 months before I quit and returned to my previous job, reducing my salary 30% and locking me out of any possibility of ever accumulating a reasonable amount of capital. If that wasn't humiliation enough, this current company is starting to fail quarterly earnings, with a medium chance it turns into a death spiral that puts me out of work in one year or so. There aren't other remote jobs available after this, I'm out of options. My job is already automated by AI anyways, it takes me 10 minutes to do the job of the whole day and I just need to copypaste what gemini/claude tell me to after sanitising it a little. What's the fucking point of anything.
Everyone in my family is telling me to give up on apple and take the offer I already have. I already accepted the offer and they really want me to start next week (it's in person, 5 days in office).>$200k a year exactly>swe contract (2 years, could be extended, maybe not)>sponsoring a clearanceMeanwhile I'm only at the verbal offer stage with apple (~215k TC) and I still have to do the background check and all of that other stuff, wait for relocation approval, etc. It might be like a month before I can start and it's not 100% guaranteed. Like half of my family works in government so when they heard that I'm getting a clearance sponsorship they flipped and told me to cut the shit and take the job. But I REALLY do not want to go back to job hunting in a year and a half.

I hate the culture around personal projects. Or rather, about the underlying assumption.I got a bunch of toy projects, where I learned say OpenGL, or memory arenas, or a bit of NES emulation, sure. I didn't finish them, because the interesting part was just learning how it worked, not creating a useless NES emulator. If I can brag about those I would. But I always have the impression that what's valued is coming in with a fully featured project, instead of a project as a means to learn a concept, and that's what's frustrating me. Because the real truth of the matter is whatever programming I do at home, is not going to be as interesting as the stuff at work, and if the stuff at work is more interesting why wouldn't I work on it?
>>109706650>Because the real truth of the matter is whatever programming I do at home, is not going to be as interesting as the stuff at work, and if the stuff at work is more interesting why wouldn't I work on it?For most people it's the exact opposite.

>>109706077unfortunately the stated policy, which of course is always subject to unilateral change, governs such things. so yes it is up to the company to decide. one guy I know had something like 6 months of unused vacation acrued by carrying it over year after year. corporate changed the policy to take as much vacation as you need (which means if you take more than 5 weeks you are fired) and they zeroed out his accrued vacation with no pay out at all.In America the only employee protections that you get in America is that you have the right to quit without giving any notice, and cannot be held liable for whatever goes wrong as a result of you quitting. In other words: if you don't like the new policy then you can quit and still get nothing instead of deciding to stay and be robbed.
>>109706077here's another one you probably didn't expect:Pension obligations can be discharged (fancy lawyer word for wiped-out) in Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of the company restructuring and continuing to stay in business.
>>109707325Everyone says this sort of thing but the reality is that your employer is probably as desperate as you are.I got fired (like actually fired) and still got my vacation paid out.
>>109707370Nah, don't try to rationalize. In both cases it was just executive greed and the companies were fine.>Case no payout of PTO on layoff was about 8 years ago.>Case 6 months of accrued vacation wiped out was about 3 years ago.America used to function on the honor-system as a high-trust society. Building things at a company that get acquired and not getting fired in the acquisition process makes it easy to jump ships, especially since you can now have big company exp on your CV without doing the gruesome interview gauntlet they normally reserve to white men.

>>109710525Ricing your terminal (with which you do nothing except of "sudo apt update") is not work, Pajeet.
>>109710527no honey big companies can only invest in consulting companies, AI and AI (actual indians). nothing for anyone else.
>>109710535You've clearly never worked with someone who's not indian.

>>109710657i guess i can. give me a moment

>>109710672>You've clearly never worked with someone who's not indian.>Works at microshit.KEK
>>109710604You're not a woman, tranny.
>>109710711That's how I know that you only work with indians: I, too, am forced to endure their smell, but that allows me to clearly see the difference in how they work and how humans work.Another protip: basically half the non-admin work higher levels do is figuring out ways to optimize productivity. Satya didn't wake up one day deciding to let everyone use linux and macs, this percolated from the ground up.

Things I give zero shits about:>the weight of a laptop I will only carry to and from a car>the quality of a touchpad I will never touch>the battery life of a machine that will remain plugged into a dockThings I care about:>annoyingly loud fans>overheating and throttling performance I prefer a tower if given the option. At my current job I have a ubuntu tower as my main dev machine and a dell windows clone of a macbook for remote work. I might get mad about the thin light laptop if I was using it to build stuff on but since I can just ssh into the tower and use that for everything I am happy with this setup. It remains cool and quiet. At my previous job there was a period for a few years where I had this piece of shit thin dell as a dev machine that would be at full fan all the time and would get slow as shit after a couple hours of work, I wanted to chuck that thing through the window. Then they later gave me a giant fat two fan dell and I was happy as it was a more suitable desktop replacement. I don't really care about the OS, they're all fine.
>>109708519Anon if you rather have my 4kg windows brick then be happy with it. I wish I could have a mac and just work, instead of the brick and worry about shitty ass windows. >if you close the lid without powersupply it won‘t automatically go in standby modeI hate this piece if shit os so fucking much.
>>109710535Personally, I have a 5kg Dell running Ubuntu. By the grace of God, it has continued to do so despite IT becoming adversarial to Linux on company devices.
>>109711358>Things I give zero shits about:>>the weight of a laptop I will only carry to and from a car>>the quality of a touchpad I will never touch>>the battery life of a machine that will remain plugged into a dock>Things I care about:>>annoyingly loud fans>>overheating and throttling performanceI would have agreed on that until I needed to be present on meetings, so I need to take my laptop with me. There you don‘t have a mouse, sometimes they are workshops and are like the whole day. Going to different sites. Then you suddenly hate that shitty weighted laptops with a passion. Especially, when you use external screens. >come back>plug in>close the lidWindows>wait 5 minutes till everything is loaded inMac>wait few seconds maximum
