What should I do as a manager if my direct report has started acting very stupid? I know he's been acting because he went from being a rockstar employee to someone who can't seem to do a single thing by himself. It's fucking over. I had a very decent job working remotely earning low six figures in europe; they got acquired by fagman and I was relocated into a position that was basically hell. I only lasted 6 months before I quit and returned to my previous job, reducing my salary 30% and locking me out of any possibility of ever accumulating a reasonable amount of capital. If that wasn't humiliation enough, this current company is starting to fail quarterly earnings, with a medium chance it turns into a death spiral that puts me out of work in one year or so. There aren't other remote jobs available after this, I'm out of options. My job is already automated by AI anyways, it takes me 10 minutes to do the job of the whole day and I just need to copypaste what gemini/claude tell me to after sanitising it a little. What's the fucking point of anything.

Everyone in my family is telling me to give up on apple and take the offer I already have. I already accepted the offer and they really want me to start next week (it's in person, 5 days in office).

I hate the culture around personal projects. Or rather, about the underlying assumption.
I got a bunch of toy projects, where I learned say OpenGL, or memory arenas, or a bit of NES emulation, sure. I didn't finish them, because the interesting part was just learning how it worked, not creating a useless NES emulator. If I can brag about those I would.
But I always have the impression that what's valued is coming in with a fully featured project, instead of a project as a means to learn a concept, and that's what's frustrating me. Because the real truth of the matter is whatever programming I do at home, is not going to be as interesting as the stuff at work, and if the stuff at work is more interesting why wouldn't I work on it?

This is exclusive to large companies. In small companies there are no caps, and they fairly often give you like a 20% raise 6 months in if you perform well. Fairly often being 1/4 times or so. Compare to big companies where you get a 5% raise only if you're very lucky.
