Goddamn...thread has been up all day and has four replies. /g/ truly is dead.

Thinkpads are truly dead. All the good ones are nigh unusable for one reason or another in the current year.
>>
>>109723519
when ram/ssds are more than half of the price of a decent thinkpad it was bound to happen
>>
>>109723519
because of rising prices, actually buying thinkpads and elitebooks or I guess just older business laptops in general, ordinary people and not just tech guys are also starting to buy thinkpads like this, especially also switching to linux
I've seen several places where people have recommended normal people to buy these on social media
so the concept is not dead, most likely it's going to be trending sooner or later
only shitty thing about this is that refurbished laptops will probably become more expensive, but I guess it is what it is. at least there's a ton of thinkpads where they come from, and prices are cheap for now
>>
>>109724150
>because of rising prices, actually buying thinkpads and elitebooks or I guess just older business laptops in general, ordinary people and not just tech guys are also starting to buy thinkpads like this, especially also switching to linux
Regardless of that, there are no replacements. New laptops all have soldered on stuff except framework which is still very expensive. $100 for a new battery. It's all the same hardware slop.
>>
I have nightmares about not knowing what I'm going to replace my T480 with. I don't see myself feeling comfortable with a newer model, and Framework laptops will never have a TrackPoint.
>>
>>109724196
If it's fast enough for your needs in the foreseeable future, stock up on T480s if you can fine em I probably got the last few T470s with 1080p that were in good condition and had drives in them for reasonable price because I liked the machine and it was more than fast enough for everyday shit.
>>
>>109723519
Economy's not as strong as it once was a decade ago, laptop hardware is pretty locked down these days, redesigns have eliminated a lot of the line's unique features compared to its competitors, and existing hardware has long been able to do what the average normalfag needs. The T480 is STILL touted as the best babby's first Thonkpad and that shit's nearly nine years old now.

A decent laptop bought any time in this past decade can still be daily driven even if it feels slow, so upgrading is less necessary. With SSDs being the only swappable major component buyers are just waiting for desirable SKUs to pop up on the secondhand market and the undesirable hardware configs just shelfwarm until they're scrapped. USB-C docks are super prevalent in offices and in homes as well so ports aren't as big a selling point any more, and a slightly nicer chiclet keyboard is still a chiclet keyboard lacking the practicality of the old 7-row layout.

Honestly if the X230/T430 came with proper FHD screens people would probably argue for those as an even more budget alternative to the T480. The hardware's old but it can still handle video/media playback well enough.
>>
>>109724284
>A decent laptop bought any time in this past decade can still be daily driven
It's true, I went from Core 2 to a T470 and the thing is an absolute monster at 9 years old, even when I got my Core 2 Latitude, it was 6 years old and firmly obsolete compared to Ivy or Haswell laptops that spewed out the same heat, things have just slowed down so much, 14nm is still usable even if it's dual core, laptops like the T470 and T480 hold a stupid amount of RAM, you're not gonna be struggling with your 14nm lake chip and 32GB of DDR4 compared to some e-waste laptop with 4GB of RAM or new gaming laptop that only has 16GB of RAM and is $900 for some reason.
>>
>>109724219
>stock up on T480s if you can fine em
this, also other models you like. They will never make laptops like this again, and the existing stock is limited, so if you want your ThinkPad stack to last, you need to buy at least a few

realistically speaking if I would get myself a used older gen T14, do you guys think it could run Rocket League smoothly? I don't really play any vidya besides emulators but I want something that can at least run rl, and other than that just a cheap-ish laptop for uni tasks
>>

T420 and T430. The bottom and lid are fine, as in the smell isn't strong and anything nauseating, but it's very noticeable specifically with the touchpad and keyboard. A not very pleasant plastic type of smell or something, T420 has it less thankfully but it's there. They look clean enough to me after I did some cleaning work but yeah the smell persists sadly

Have you looked at Lenovo's part clearance?
https://support.lenovo.com/[2-letter country code]/en/parts-lookup/clearance-sale

If they don't have any T490s parts in your country, look at T14s gen 1 (same parts with different part numbers), or as a last resort P1/X1E gen 1-3 (where you'd have to screw and unscrew dozens of tiny screws to move the keyboard from the 15" to the 14" palmrest)
>>
>>109728934
oh my god i didnt know this existed, they also offer parts on my cunt at retardedly low prices, lots of 6/7/8th gen stuff

I've heard x1 carbon gen 6 had the best keyboard (or at least was the last one with a particularly good keyboard) and I care more about a keyboard than anything else.
there is one locally for $200 with 16gb, i7, IPS. should I go for it or shell out for something more modern?
>>
>>109729530
$200 is almost free, if it's good enough for your use I'd probably just try it out.
>>
>>
>>109729530
For this budget you can also consider T480s if you're anxious about the RAM, or T14G1A if it's the CPU (and you're fine with losing the metal case and corebootability). All three have the same sort of keyboard with 1.8mm travel and a 4mm Elan trackpoint.

I have a T490 running wayland, that supposedly has a good thunderbolt 3 support, so I'm looking for an external monitor I can use like this.

Anyone using a setup like this? I'd like to know if it it plug and play or did you have to troubleshoot here and there?

Should I take a gamble on ordering a laptop from another country? Or should you only buy used thinkpad from your local shop.

everything else have gotten so expensive, while thinkpads are cheap
I'm fairly certain it's going to become fairly common for regular people to soon buy refurbished business laptops like t14 g2/g3 and elitebook 840. People don't really need more for most of their daily work and living, and linux will work on those machines for years and is getting more popular
so I somewhat expect prices for refubished laptops to increase as well. they've been cheaper than usual now for a while, probably 25 percent cheaper than usual, but I don't think that'll last

This, and theres good reason normies should buy new, us as ThinkPad niggas are willing to put up with a laptop that isnt perfect or new, may or may not have a working battery, or come with an os from the seller, but the normies need a laptop that just works, and even if its consume trash that isnt as nicely built, theyre getting to inbox a new laptop that they know has good battery health, and has the windows 11 on it (eww) and is going to do what they need, so the market will never go away, and im okay with that, I wouldn't want normies buying a business class computer because social media artists told them to, and then being underwhelmed by it or even facing problems that the people who made the laptop can't help them with, or a store to return it to easily, they either gotta work it out with eBay sellers or deal with it themselves, which is a hassle, and why it makes sense to buy new.

Pic rel is cringe, but for a normal this is the best damn $700 you're gonna spend because of things like battery life and being able to buy Applecare.

My T470s had an Alt key that was constantly inputting Alt even though I wasn't pressing anything and at this point it has started to affect multiple keys. Sometimes I can't even type anything on the keyboard but things like Alt+Tab still work. Literally just numbers and letters and also enter don't work. It's definitely not software related because it was even happening outside of Windows. Is it over?
>>
>>109739223
You might want to try cleaning the keyboard with compressed air and isopropyl alcohol first. If that doesn't fix it, try unscrewing it and cleaning the contacts too.
If nothing works, you could always replace it. Another anon already posted the clearance sale link: >>109728934

Apple laptops have been so shit since they soldered even the drives that my sister doesn't even fuck with them anymore, She thought having a 1466 Macbook air with integrated HD6000 would just not fail but even that thing died for no reason, if it was some T2 soldered SSD nonsense we would've been even more fucked when it came to recovering data, would've went from a $100ish dollar purchase of 9yo computer to put the drive in, to a board repair on a 9yo computer which makes no sense unless you really need the data, but you still shouldn't have to do all that.

I know X60 for certain. As another anon mentioned, apparently so to, the X200. Not sure about their T variants, but I'd assume so. All other subsequent iterations can only be "neutered"; they require blobs used for booting, after which the IME is kept in a reset loop, as I understand/remember it.

There are also desktop/server motherboards that may achieve a similar result as the fully libre laptop boards, though they're also likely to be C2D era.

Alternatively, just don't be a pedo.

Get a T14 Gen 2 with the AMD Zen3 processor anon, the T480 is massively overpriced for what it is these days due to social media recommending non computer motherfuckers to buy them for some bizzare reason even though they'll never benefit from such a machine.

>T480 still the meta for used Thinkpads or is something newer recommended these days?
in general it's the thinkpad t14 gen 2 and 3 that give you the most bang for your bucks these days. these are the four-five year old models the industry is getting rid of these days. the gen 3 amd only has soldered ram, so avoid that one though. also the gen 3 is 16:10 and is a little smaller, so the keyboard is slightly smaller which is noticeable
they're not particularly good for gaming and get really hot like any laptop that's not a gaming laptop with a proper cooling system, but they work for wow private servers and stuff like that
>>
>>109745717
Yes, as long as you set every related BIOS setting to Legacy/Compatibility, especially the SATA controller
You'll then have to search for the primary and secondary I/O ports for your HDD to be able to install, unless you're keep with running it only from the CD-ROM
you have to make sure that you have a HDD, not SSD, otherwise the SSD will die because TOS rewrites the same bytes over and over
all Thinkpad models from the 60 series up to x30 series are able to boot and install TempleOS natively
it is prefered to have a T60 with a 4:3 1400x1050 screen because the scaling is the best (in my experience at least), maybe even 16:10, but 16:9 is ultra uggo
t. 4:3 T60 dualbooting TOS and Windows XP

It's not MX-7 being good it's HP using the cheapest shittiest paste on everything, but MX-7 is good though. Everything I have put it on has seen a decent drop in temps, even weird shit like old Pentium 4 laptops, made a huge difference on my IBM T30.
>>
>>109737658

also for some reason the cooling on the ZBook G2 is pretty beefy, I bet when I upgrade that GPU it will go up a little, there's almost as much metal in the heatpipe setup as my Alienware M17 r5. I did get it to 61*C today but that was basically heatsoaking it for an hour in Warframe.

Now when I did all of this I did a little extra, I re-taped the area between the heatsink and the fan to help channel more airflow into the heatpipe cooler and when I did the repaste I cleaned all contact areas with alcohol. I was surprised too at how well it stays cool.

I think the AMD gen 4 also has soldered memory. But from gen 5 forwards both intel and amd should have two dimm slots and no soldered ram. But they're far too expensive now to be bought refurbished.
I would think skyrim would be no problem, but not sure on emulating switch. But in general they're not that great for gaming, they're primarily made for office work and get fairly hot when running games like any regular laptop that's not a gaming laptop does. Their cooling solutions are just not made for tasks like that.
The only game I've played is wow on private servers and even that gets hot.

Why are Thinkpads so overpriced these days?? I used to hear people say they are dirt cheap because its mainly old office laptops that are sold refurbished but the prices even for older Thinkpads are insane.. Ain't no way I'm paying 200 bucks for a 10 years old laptop with below average specs...
>>109752301
I got a non-thinkpad laptop with a 6th gen i7 and it works good enough for just internet and coding.
>>
>>109753523
200 is way overpriced for what it is. There are no longer any corporate laptop fleets using old thinkpads, and there haven't been for some time. They've moved on to the new lenovo chinkpads or chromebooks since 2018. And resellers have clued in to the fact that these thinkpads are hip and cool to tech hipsters. Try looking around on used markets around you because older people don't know that what they're selling is valuable. Or go for a Dell Latitude or HP which should be cheaper because they don't have the thinkpad name
>>
>>109753523
>I used to hear people say they are dirt cheap because its mainly old office laptops that are sold refurbished but the prices even for older Thinkpads are insane
They're classic cars of laptops now. HP and Dell have replaced them as cheap garbage laptop that gets replaced every 3-5 years but they rarely last longer than the warrant. Thinkpads that last forever are now in shorter supply and people know it.

This, due to internet everybody knows what they have, try buying a known reliable car, it's getting factored in the price, the days of buying that 13 year old 100,000 mile Honda with lots of life left for 5 grand are gone, be prepared to spend $5000 or more on one that's 22 years old or more if it's running.

Why cant we just get 1 durable thinkpad laptop with a dgpu? Do I really have to get a omen or tuf or something?
>>
>>109755027
>durable thinkpad laptop with a dgpu
It's because it's an oxymoron Anon, having a dedicated GPU puts more heat in the laptop and it's another point of failure, the carbon fiber infused shit and magnesium skeleton of a chinkpad are wonderful, but part of what keeps them going for a very long time are the shit specifications, like U class chips and low power Intel or Vega integrated graphics, Look at some of the great Macbook Pro GPU failures like Nvidia 8600M, AMD 6750M, if they didn't have those piece of shit cards, the laptops would've lived forever, but they didn't because they chose to put a dgpu in it, where Lelnovo leans toward integrated graphics in their rank and file 14 inch business machine, and it's worked brilliantly for them, the failure rate is very low.

>My old PC just died and I need a new one
Lol, were you still on C2D?

>>109753523
>Why are Thinkpads so overpriced these days??
Normalfags becoming aware of them, and them becoming trendy as a result. This is largely an extension of lockdown trends where everyone suddenly needed a computing device other than a smartphone, yet being too poor to buy anything new.

Also the whole flash chip shortage; resellers now often take out the RAM to sell separately, the present-day equivalent to coin clipping lol.

>>109750890

The keyboard is still good, but any T430 you're likely to find in 2026 will probably be visibly damaged, have a worn-out battery, and have a worse price/performance ratio than 2018+ models because they're becoming collector's items.
>I want something cheap because i don't have money right now.

It works but the T470 with 50% more performance is like the same money on a similar dual core setup with 15W instead of 25w-35w Ivy CPUs and goes for the same money, skip over the T480 because meme if you're looking to spend over $200 and get a T14 Gen 2.

(unrelated to thread but kinda related to u ig) I bought a non-thinkpad 14'' laptop that has a undervolted cpu and a quite crappy dGPU, but its a dGPU. I haven't extensively tested it but it seems like a good compromise to play some easier games without the laptop eating all your battery life in 4 seconds
>>
>>109755612

If you can get one for free or cheap, do it. They are upgradable to quad core, mine has a 3610qe out of a network appliance and 8gb of RAM and does basic browsing well. Shit, I can even play old games on it, with the Intel graphics too, it does UT99 and UT2004 exceptionally well. Q4 even runs on it. Microcenter has a battery for it for 40 bucks and it's pretty decent. I use it for my racecar it's got Megasquirt Tunerstudio on it.

If I had to spend money on a Thinkpad right now though, and was broke, it would be an E590 no contest. Any of the E models are basically T models that you can't drop and expect to survive more than once. The battery life is amazing and the i7-8265u can keep up with the modern internet, shit, my Alienware has an 8th gen Intel chip and it's fine. There is a backlit keyboard option too for the E590, uses the same keyboard as T480/490. And it has a metal lid on it too. FHD screen.

>>109757710

Gamer here. I'm gonna shill Alienware HARD, fuck what everyone thinks. I used to meme people who bought them until I was gifted an M17 R5. There is a TON of metal under these things to soak up all the heat. The heatpipes on the back are almost two inches tall. If I turn off Turbo mode it will struggle to get above 70*C load sitting on a table with no help. The non-gaming brand laptops with gaming GPUs are a compromise I had a TUF, pic related, and they get too hot. There's just not enough real estate on a 15" laptop to spread all of that heat out.

If you want to game, spend your money on a 17" screen it has more heatpipe material to dissipate heat. Gaming laptops are something you do not want to skimp on shit if you want it to last. That M17 R5 was built in 2018 and I spent 4 hours playing Warframe on it last night. It survived a 10 foot drop out of my semi-truck, no shit. I'm not going to lie about some shit like that. You get what you pay for, it doesn't have to be an Alienware but spend the money and get something nice.

Is it a good idea to get a thinkpad yoga from the used market? I'm having second thoughts about it even thought it's a thinkpad, since it feels kinda like a tablet and they're usually not good used. Specifically X1 Yoga Gen3 (8th gen i7, 16/512). Battery is the part I'm most concerned about, since these models are supposed to be thinner? (as far as I know). >Battery is the part I'm most concerned about, since these models are supposed to be thinner?
54 Wh compared to 57 Wh on X1C6 and T480s. Adjusting for the touchscreen and pen digitizer you can expect about 1h shorter life than those two models.
>Seller says the battery health is good but I doubt that on a laptop released in 2020.
Original batteries in good shape aren't as rare as you might think. I have a few as old as 2014 with 80-85% health. Newer ones where they overcharge the cells by design will obviously be worse but I still have one from 2018 with 88% and a few from 2019 with 85-90%.

I want oooooooone. It's pretty much the perfect retro machine for XP-era and earlier shit. Unfortunately in my local market I've only found R-series equivalents, and in online marketplaces retro models are horrifically overpriced. I saw one T30 selling for 190 euros.
>>
>>109776417

There's nothing wrong with the R models, I actually prefer those because the rubber material on the XP era laptops comes off easily. T30 has native serial port so I can run the ECU off it and the wideband runs off a PCMCIA RS232 card.

The problem with the T30 is a lot of them have issues with the memory slots and they have to be reflowed, it's a common issue. Still a great laptop though, but my perfect XP Thinkpad has to be the T60p with the ATi X1700 graphics. It took me a minute but I did find one.
>>
>>109776459
I'm aware of the memory slot thing and I have the tools (and I hope the ability) to fix it. I was hoping there would be someone selling someone as "not-working" because of that but no such luck yet... Most likely these were thrown in the shredder.
>T60p
I have a T60 with an ATi X1400. I found it on the flea market for 10 euro on shockingly good condition to the point even its OG battery holds a charge after all these years. Perfect machine for mid-to-late XP era shit, albeit not as good as the T60p obv.
>>
>>109776459
Aren't the R series less durable and with less premium materials? The worn off rubber is annoying but relatively manageable.
>>
>>109776546

Not really, I still wouldn't drop one. I have an R60 I have been hoarding for an X210ai build, it's pretty similar inside to my T60p. The R models usually didn't come with premium graphics, the highest on the R60 you could get was the x1300 and on the T60p was the x1700 or the FireGL V5250 which is the same thing, we used to softmod them back in the day.

I have 4 T30's and two work and I'm fairly sure one of the non-working ones has the memory issue, where are you?

Don't be foolish with your money, Anon... price to performance is what we're after with the chinkpads.
>>
>>109785595
Fuck no! 16GB is admittedly rare, but 256GB NVME, FHD display, highest-specced CPU and it being """refurbished""", does not warrant a $329 price.

For that same amount, you could get a well-specced 8GB X280 and swap out the motherboard, even though that's also ill-advised, since they're around same price as what a 16GB X280 system SHOULD go for, if not higher.

Just wait™ until you come across a system that isn't priced out that ass. A more abundant alternative is a T480s; it's slightly smaller than the regular T480, has a better build quality, and a good display by default--FHD or QHD.

>>

>u think it'll hold in the next 10 years?
I don't know what that means.
Are you asking if it will last you 10 years?

The latest Gen 9 got the new Intel X7/X9 Panther Lake chips which are a big jump in terms of efficiency and iGPU performance.
The P1 always had dogshit battery life, but with these newest chips it seems like that's not as much an issue anymore.
The chassis is unchanged since the Gen 7. Gen 9 has WWAN now after it was removed in previous generations.

I'm personally looking at getting the latest X1 Carbon since the chassis got a huge redesign and USB-C ports are easily replaceable now.

On the US Lenovo Pro Business Store, the X1 Carbon is much cheaper than the T14 for the same config (i5, 32GB, OLED); $2,050 for X1, $2,560 for T14.

In the US, custom configurations aren't available yet for the P1 / T1g Gen 9.

I only use the X201outside, in events and at the uni, to mog thinkpadlets; and only for web browsing and writing, i never use the tablet for anything other than showing it off. At home i use a T430.
Downgrading to a X61T would make me lose resolution, DDR3, processor threads and frequency (not that i care too much, to be honest). But I will get cool points in the rare ocasions i go outside. Is it a fair exchange?

Skylake coreboot still isn't very libre. It's beholden to a 0.5 MB blob from Intel for raminit (one that they accidentally released with a BSD license, but still a blob) and 1.1 MB of residual Intel ME. Haswell and older have libre raminit and strip the ME to less than 100 KB.

No way around Skylake though if you want >16 GB RAM in a <=14" laptop.

So what's the go to mPCIE Wi-Fi card that'll work on Linux/BSD out of the box? I'm on ProBook 640 G1 though, pretty sure it doesn't have a Wi-Fi whitelist, but some chink sellers say that Intel Wi-Fi cards (in particular 7265) don't work on HP and Lenovo.

You shouldn't use Libreboot not because of asinine considerations, but instead because its configuration is objectively ass, and its release schedule is inconsistent. You're better off using Coreboot and building your own config. As I understand it, it has the benefit of having fewer blobs, but it's not entirely libre.

Based Kaby lake enjoyer, considering that 2017 chinkpads are about as modern and not classical as a thinkpad could be, I don't see any downside to getting something newer, especially if you're into hardcore thin and light ultrabooks like the Carbon X1, efficiency is the name of the game, Would it be cool if my T470 had a classical keyboard? Yes, would I use a 35w piece of shit that goes 60% slower and uses 2.33x more energy? No. Also, you're not even losing anything like upgrade-ability because the Gen 5 Cabron X1 has soldered RAM.
>>
>>109785595

why pay that much when you can get an E590 with the same hardware for 100 bucks? I have one and it's pretty good and the UHD 620 is more than enough as long as you aren't doing AAA gaming, hell I think I got mine to play Warframe.

If you don't need a touch screen just get the E590. I love mine, the battery life is pretty good. The screen is fine, you don't need to pay hipster tax.
>>
>>109801939
Intel 8-10 gen are basically identical. They're better than 6-7th gen in certain multicore workloads and the igpu did get better, but if it were me, I'd either keep what I had, or skip right to 11-12th generation. Skip 13-14, and anything newer is too expensive for /tpg/ anyway and should be ignored.
>>
>>109802514
Don't underestimate the power of /tpg/, there were some real big swinging dicks who had a T470 with 1080P screen when it was brand new if you go back in desuarchive, it feels like a baller laptop right now with it's keyboard all lit up, I would've been the motherfucking man if I had one back when it was a supported business laptop.
>>
>>109801939
The most cost efficient are pretty much the ones the companies are getting rid off, and that's pretty much four-five year old laptops. So you most bang for your bucks is pretty much intel 11th and 12th gen, like T14 gen 2 and 3. The AMD gen 3 has soldered ram so watch out for that, but in general it's the Intel ones that are in abundance and with good prices anyway.
The gen 3 has a 16:10 screen and is slightly smaller and the keyboard is also slightly but noticeably smaller, so you might want to check it out first before you buy.

That's kinda how enshittification goes Anon, it's little by little, first they fuck up the home end insert pg up pg down delete keys on the chinkpad, and then the CPU is soldered, the one of the RAM slots is soldered, then the wifi card is soldered, then both of the RAM slots are soldered, and next thing you know you're just using a less polished PC version of a MacBook Air because you chose to ignore trivial shit that Lenovo does to the laptops that no one asked for.

It's kinda like those autistic ThinkPad videos Rossmann was making in 2014-2015, where he's like "These durable business laptops are fucking chuds that ship with Windows with shit displays and battery life, why are you fucking with the keyboard when nobody asked? Instead of making them smaller thinner with better battery life and screen, I have never seen a thinkpad user bitching about the placement of the webcam on the top of a laptop, the notch is just copying other companies just to change something.
