>>
>>109738566
You can install Steam and Wine and whatever launchers or emulators, etc, you want on any distro, even Gentoo if you don't get filtered.

There is nothing special about any particular distro that makes it better or worse for gaming. The only thing that really matters is the Linux kernel and graphics drivers.
>>
>>109738517
It may be worth trying Honeyview through Wine. I saw a single review from one guy and he said it worked great.
If not, of your requirements, the following apps might satisfy some of your requirements. I don't know since I'm not a gooner, so if my answers are bad an actual gooner will probably correct me later.
XnViewMP supports bookmarks, but definitely DOES NOT have a minimal interface, but if memory serves it does have fit image to window and customizable controls.
Nomacs has no bookmarks, but more minimal UI than XnViewMP, and probably satisfies the rest of your requirements.

i mean he's a little retarded but the reason why people don't like him is trannies spreading slander about him all the time. there's websites with 100 pages worth of text claiming how he's basically hitler 2.0, all because he's not willing to bend to the tranny agenda. i don't know a single reasonable argument why pouring money into good FOSS projects is le bad suddenly. it's just derangement
>>
>>109738647
I did think he made some good points to be honest despite him clearly being a fucking retard and maybe Omarchy being a bit of a grift (he describes it as "a pyramid").

Like, for example, the uncomfortable truth that "dirty money" can still accomplish good things. If you spend that supposedly poisoned money on parks or libraries or hospitals, etc, regardless of the source it came from (could be good or bad) it's still being used for the collective good.
>>
>>109738636
>even Gentoo if you don't get filtered
What's that supposed to mean?
You can install anything on any Linux distro, if you know how to.
Yes, you can install APT on Gentoo and transition into Ubuntu if you feel like it, I wouldn't recommend that though.
>>
>>109738700
The software will run on anything to a certain extent is what I mean. But yes, probably not a good idea to take that idea to the extreme of installing different package managers on your distro. If you're doing that then you'd likely be better served by a distro box container running whatever the supported distro is.

I don't understand. Listening to the whole interview, he just seems like someone who has his principles and everything else is just whatever promotes his principles.

He's looking at this like a business, not just an engineering project. I think that's a good thing in the FOSS world. Too many engineers and not enough business sense.
>>
>>109738681
>the uncomfortable truth that "dirty money" can still accomplish good things
absolutely, i mean i don't think there's any nefarious goals behind this foundation or funding, it's just a couple of rich guys trying to make themselves look good by giving money to the relevant thing of the month. it's basically pocket change to them but vaxry for example is gonna have years of peace not having to worry about funding work on his compositor, it's a massive win for linux as a whole.

It probably just has a desktop entry or executable that starts the gui program.

However, you actually probably want to uninstall that and instead install polychromatic.
Install it through shelly, it should pull a few dependencies including openrazer, then add yourself to the openrazer group by running `sudo gpasswd -a $USER openrazer` and reboot.

I set up a headless ubuntu server to run plex years ago and forgot everything I knew and I'm a bit overwhelmed trying to relearn. I'm trying to use pscp to copy an entire directory recursively from Windows to said Ubuntu server's plex directory. If I'm understanding this correctly, I should be using the following:

pscp -r "Driveletter:\folder\other folder\" Username@machineIP:/path/to/plexmount/

I'm using quotations since there are spaces in the Windows folder name. Does this look right, or have I missed/misunderstood/fucked something up?

`pacman -Ql pkgname` will list all the files installed by a package.
Try `pacman -Ql razergenie | grep desktop` or `pacman -Ql razergenie | grep bin` to find what it may be called.

This seems silly though, as it's certainly just going to be called something with genie in the name, if it's not showing up in your launcher that's odd, but perhaps it hasn't loaded new entries somehow.

Interdisciplinary research can be shitshow, particularly towards the translational end.

Good supervisory teams will push you to learn skills they don't have. But at the final hurdle technology gets flattened out to lowest common denominator. If you think your medical prof who's MD was written on a typewriter with hand drawn graphs is giving you meaningful feedback on your LaTeX manuscript your shit out of luck.

There are still so many people finishing their PhD with "ok" excel skills which is super concerning. Try to push them to learn just a little python/R but they flat out refuse.

It's not if you did/didn't write in LaTeX, it's if you couldn't

How would I go about debugging something going on with i3wm?
It doesn't happen when I freshly booted up the PC but sometime it may or may not happen. Right now, it did and I can force it.
So, when I open an application and put it on full screen, the display might blank out for a second. Same happens when I exit the full screen, or am just switching out of/into the full screen software.
Happens with mpv and games.
Doesn't happen when I F11 on Firefox, however.
I tried tail -f on both ~/.share/local/xorg/Xorg.log.0 and /var/log/Xorg.log.0, both don't update the file when it happens.
Anything else I could look at to get rid of it?

Flatpak doesn't from my experience. I assume Snap also doesn't considering almost half the Ubuntu users use the Snap package instead of the debian package.

Developers and maintainers, of open source or commercial apps (and yes, I have proprietary apps on my system) are just too lazy to deal with native packages. That's all. This is not a technical problem. You'd think in this LLM slop era there would be less of an excuse to dodge this but here we are.
As a user I want to:
Don't break my system
Add a package
Remove a package
Search packages
Install a package source (if available)
Easily build my own package
The fact that we've accepted a story that you need 5 different ways to do this on a popular Linux distro really speaks to the spinelessness of the user base.
Next they'll tell me I need Rust to do all this securely.
I'm fed up.
>>
if you're just after as many packages in one manager as possible is there a reason to not choose nix and move on with life
>>
>>109743067
Anon there are infinite native packages. Even discounting how easy it is to come up with shitty new package managers, every release of every distro is a different OS with different packaging semantics and a different ABI. Nobody should try to keep up with that.
>>
>>109743067
you do realize that you can become a package maintainer yourself right? if you want something packaged for a given distro then go through the process and just do it yourself. if it's so easy you should have no problems creating hundreds of high quality packages on your own.
also if you're not satisfied with a given distro's package ecosystem then you should apply for a refund and get your money back kek
>>
>>109743100
But some yet people do a fine job at it. Is it a good idea to build native packages for the top handful of systems out there? Sure. Do you have to run out and include immediate support for every obscure distro that was just weekend vibe coded and pushed to GitHub on Tuesday? Probably not.
I've put my foot down and I'm going native only one of of my systems and see how far I can go.
>>
>>109743067
>Developers and maintainers too lazy to deal with native packages. That's all. This is not a technical problem.
It literally is a technical problem because a "native" package manager is not a tool that is suited for arbitrary software installs. It exists strictly as a way to manage system-critical packages, not your fucking web browser, music player or a video game. The fact that distros added in a bunch of unnecessary packages into their repos is the real problem here.

Unless you're on something like NixOS, you will always need multiple package managers. One for your OS, and one for your user apps. It's up to you to decide which package format you personally want:
>Flatpak
>Appimage
>Runimage
>Nix packages
>brew packages
>distrobox containerized packages

You need to realize that there is no such thing as a "native" package. "Native" is a completely arbitrary term that means nothing. At best you could say that distrobox and maybe flatpak aren't native.
The issue you have is completely made up and nonsensical.
>>

>But some yet people do a fine job at it. Is it a good idea to build native packages for the top handful of systems out there? Sure.
It's actually a good amount of work to become a packager for even one 1st tier distro let alone all of them. I applaud the autism of people who do it, but they're actually a tiny minority.

>>
>>109743255
>Unless you're on something like NixOS, you will always need multiple package managers.
Not really. Arch, gentoo, void and both alpine(if you dont need anything proprietary) and fedora to an extent can get away with not needing multiple package managers. You can probably get away with it on debian as well since almost everything gets distributed with a .deb or has their own debian repo.
>Native" is a completely arbitrary term that means nothing.
Everyone knows that native package manager refers to the package manager that comes with the distro.
Also appimages aren't really supposed to be a package manager its just a way to distribute binaries the same way you would distribute an exe. Not much different to distributing a prebuilt golang or rust binary (or even python).

don't know how large your drive is but that's probably much capacity for root. all you need is 50G for a normal system, ~80-100 to be extra safe; swap 1x of system ram, 2x if you want to suspend to disk.
or you can just use btrfs subvolumes like the other anon said (or lvm).

No, not everyone agrees on what a "native package manager is". By your definition Flatpak is the native package manager of Fedora, Zorin, Mint, CachyOS and SteamOS, while Snap is a native package manager of Ubuntu. The anon I was replying to clearly doesn't consider Snap a native package manager nor does he consider Snaps and Flatpaks native packages.
The whole discussion about what a "native package manager" is or what a "native package" is is completely retarded and pointless. Every sperg out there has his own definition of what "native" means.

>appimages aren't really supposed to be a package manager
It's a package format that suits app distribution far better than root-level package managers like apt, dnf, pacman, rpm-ostree, zypper, etc. There is nothing stopping people from making a repo and a package manager for appimage packages (in fact, several exist).
The whole discussion wasn't strictly about package managers, but packages and their distribution as a whole.

Nta but turning any type of swap completely off is a bad idea, the kernel itself always uses swap even if you have a gazillion GBs of physical memory.

>zswap is better than zram if you are constantly swaping
Most people aren't constantly swapping, and zswap has the quirk of requiring physical swap. zswap is very much IBM's baby. It even has support for POWER's 842 hardware accelerated compression. There are enterprise workloads which swap regularly and benefit greatly from zswap adding a 3rd tier to the VM system before the physical paging codepath. For desktop use cases nobody cares except Arch maintainers retroactively justifying their obsolete installation instructions.

>>109745002
That's also an option, but the idea of having 10% of physical memory which can never be used for RES bothers people.

"No such interface" usually means the DBus server isn't aware of this thing / it doesn't exist.

Because no one is throwing money at it. To get things done on gahnoo/leenox, you have to do what Valve does, throw Gaben's weight around with lots and lots of money. Linux devs are like the german mercenaries of the thirty years war in the 1600s, you get what you pay for. If you're using Bazzite then you're using an OSTree system which is basically like a layered system like a stack of pancakes. Your bottom layer might have the core system tools and utilities. The middle layer might have your desktop. Then you might install some applications and they layer on top.

Rebasing is basically re-arranging those layers to a different system.

>>109741514
>I'm sure installing it will teach me a bit but also the maintaining
The manual way of installing a system is a nice skill as you can apply it to any Linux system. Distributions tend to differ on how the so called bootstrapping is done; Arch uses a program called "pacstrap", Debian and Ubuntu use "debootstrap", Fedora uses its own package manager and for Gentoo you get a Tar archive which is extracted to the target mount point. In fact many distributions hand out those tar root filesystem packages to avoid having to have a snowflake tool.
(and yes, this means you could theoretically have an installer that installs any distribution out there)

not really. the correct way to look at it is that CPUs have had a fuckton of useful features for a long time now and we're only now seeing devs enable them because devs are faggots who either don't know how useful these optimizations are or just don't know how easy it is to enable.

Why do 99% of distributions still rely on insecure network time from the ntp pool project? I'm pretty sure cloudflare could handle all of it these days including having network time security (nts) support. Google and aws public ntp do not yet support it though so we need more redundancy. SystemD devs need to improve their time sync daemon as it can only use sntp right now.

Ubuntu and Pop!_OS use their own secure time servers and chrony is now the default installed daemon I think. All other distros seem to be stuck in the past.

You said, without a thorough experience of using AMD on linux.
Go look up 'ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout' and '[gfxhub] page fault - GCVM_L2_PROTECTION_FAULT_STATUS' related errors on https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/work_items
Just because your experience is stable doesn't mean everyone's is. To this day I can't actually game properly on Linux because there's a high chance it will randomly page fault and crash my entire desktop, requiring a hard reset of the machine because AMD GPUs don't know how to reset properly.
Not only do AMD engineers seem to not know why this happens (believe me, I've spent literally dozens of hours looking through every dev response and possible fix), it actually doesn't happen on windows because the driver code base is different and the driver seems to just discard the error there rather than hang.

If it works for you, great, but they are unstable as fuck for a good number of people in a way that's actually quite unacceptable really.

Still rather this than NVIDIA though.

>'ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout'
Could be anything, this is more of a generic statement of "a problem happened" and only tells 1/4th of the story.

>the driver seems to just discard the error
Which means there is a problem, but the windows driver doesn't try to fix it.

The last time I had freezing like this was due to power/voltage fluctuations via the outlet, and that was on windows using AMD, and that was 10 years ago. Every GPU I bought - 290x, 390x, rx 480, rx 580 - ended up with either black screen or random freezing at some point before I realized it's not the GPUs at fault. Even sitting on desktop idle, once every two or three weeks it would freeze entirely. I don't know if my situation can apply to yours, but I fixed my problem by using a different outlet and it's been smooth sailing to 2026.
>>
>>109758873
>only tells 1/4th of the story.
Right, I added the other common error that I (and many others) often experience.

I've tried undervolting, underclocking, a ton of kernel driver arguments, radv debug variables that disables features, a range of mesa versions. It's been a problem for years, it's never getting fixed for me on my card (RDNA1).
It's simply inexcusable that using the GPU can cause it to randomly page fault and crash the entire desktop, especially since this does not happen on Windows.

I have no doubt that if I bought a new card I'd likely have no issues, but even that's not true for everyone, people on RDNA3 and RDNA4 report this error even today, just not many of them.

Point is, AMD sucks ass on Linux, it's just better than NVIDIA.

I use a VM to play games using a secondary NVIDIA card. However if I do boot the system into Windows on baremetal (as I have for extended periods before) and use the AMD card instead (it is the primary), no crashes. In fact I experiences no crashes under Windows no matter my config.

However, I'd argue it is actually not acceptable that simply running a game on it has a random chance to flash bang crash you with a driver fault that requires you to reboot your PC. I'd rather lose 10% fps all the time, than have whatever feature is causing this instability.

I never use KDE Meta to install KDE on Arch. It's better to install a selection of KDE groups that give you everything you might need instead of what you think the meta group gives you. Like getting kde-utilities and kde-system alongside "plasma" gives you a solid enough beginning, while also maybe adding kde-graphics as well.
>>

There is no kde-meta. plasma-meta only installs plasma (aka the desktop shell) and konsole is not part of that. kde-applications-meta contain the applications.

Microsoft Office
Adobe
Literal malware (including but not limited to games that require kernel level spyware in the form of anti-cheat)

Boring work stuff and spyware basically. For everything else there's literally no reason not to just run Linux.

>Microsoft Office
The absolutely BASED guy behind Omarchy is in talks with some Microsoft guys to get Microsoft Office working on Linux.
Newer generations have effectively swapped from Microsoft Office to Google Docs anyway, so it's a dying product almost as much as Windows is.
>Adobe
It is no longer relevant. People have abandoned Adobe en masse. There's too much good competition in this space and most people who use Adobe products aren't dinosaur office drones like most Microsoft Office users are, making them less rigid when switching between software.
>CAD
Yeah pretty much. Most CAD software you find in the wild is in one of the following categories:
- Built only for Windows and specifically sold to businesses
- Built for Windows, macOS and Linux, but is abandonware and can't run on anything more recent than Ubuntu 14
- Built for any OS, but still only used on Windows because the people using it are tech illiterate Gen X whose main PC is their smartphone

Every single indie Photoshop user has switched to Photopea citing "it's literally photoshop but free and in your browser". And yes, you can get it to work offline with Photocrea. The rest of normies who prefer paid or freemium products have gone to Canva and similar cross-platform applications.

Turns out if you only depend on a single Adobe product rather than their cross-app cloud storage, replacing it is easy as fuck.
>>
>>109763522
Those with skill maybe. There's still a lot of "artists" that can only use Photoshop and don't know how to use any other tools and can't be bothered to learn either.
>>
>>109763607
>Those with skill maybe
Nah, even complete amateurs who use Photoshop as a glorified Paint.exe switched to Photopea or Canva. Photoshop simply can't beat the convenience of "free" and "in your web browser" which is exactly what attracts totally casual users.

Photopea got popular because it almost looks like Photoshop, except it's free and you don't have to download/install it.
Meanwhile Canva gained a lot of popularity because, again, it's free on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. All the "my phone is my computer" people started using it as their first image editor, then continued using it when they started using their laptops/PCs.

To a lot of younger people Adobe is an overpriced and barely relevant old relic. It's not as relevant as it is in the minds of older millennials who grew up pirating Photoshop and not knowing anything else.
The only reason Photoshop is still used a lot in the corporate world is because corporations move very slowly. They're usually a decade behind the current trends.

Unless Adobe ends up buying Canva and Photopea, they'll probably collapse under the weight of all the new competition. And they're not just bleeding users who are doing photo editing, but video editing as well. It's very scary being Adobe right now.
>>
>>109763827
Even a "complete amateur" is someone with skill compared to some of the hacks that use Photoshop and call themselves an artist.
These are the sort of people that use all of the AI tooling and workflows built-in to Photoshop nowadays (before that they would just get template PSDs from stock websites but now the built-in generative AI can just do it for them) and literally cannot work without it.

I think you underestimate just how good Photoshop is in the hands of a skilled idiot. So many hacks out there that call themselves a graphic designer whilst having none of the real skills to do so.
