I have all that, probably a dozen 2.5" 2TB drives, and multiple sticks of that 204 in 4-8GB configs. I actually have one of these little boxes already, so I know what they can do, and they look great, tiny, etc. I use it as basically a video player and emulator, browser, etc.

Problem is I have multiple older boxes like this, and I don't want to bin them. Not really worth selling either. Some of them are atom spec, so basically only useful for cold storage management or as a firewall/router. I guess I can turn one into a torrent box or something. Just feel bad having this old junk that doesn't really use a lot of electricity, but doesn't really have a useful purpose either.

the printer loaded up would be ~26kg, cheap moving shelfs all look flimsy as fuck or list 25kg as max weight, if extended all the way, the leverage could bend the rails on some of them i'm sure, nevermind dropping the printer. I'd say my most impressive personal project is this. Earlier this year I really tismed it up with tuning my VM ZFS mirror in my NAS. I wanted to increase the life of my consumer grade SSDs that I put in the mirror by reducing rmw amplification at all costs. I researched changing LBA, compared ZVOLs to datasets (datasets are better here since they can write in variable chunks that are between the lower bound (ashift) and upper bound (recordsize), while ZVOLs only write in increments of their volblocksize no matter what), tested qcow2 files vs .raw files (.raw files are better since qcow2 files always coalesce writes to 64k (write amplification), while .raw files (especially on 16k datasets) are also more variable), and tuned an NFS share to be used as my virtualized piracy stack's (qbit-nox + gluetun) qbit downloads folder. Making that NFS share mount on VM boot was annoying, but I did end up doing it by ditching the old school ifupdown and using modified systemd units instead. I also secured it with home rolled mTLS through the kernel. Was partially along on setting up Kerberos until I discovered the kernel can do mTLS.

I think my Linux chops are well above entry level, but it's hard finding Linux gigs here in the midwest. It seems like most positions are Windows only. Maybe I just bite the bullet and try to learn Active Directory.

It is, yeah. Used a lot of printed pieces where I could. It's not the heat of the drive, it's that you are supposed to put the drives in the 2 slots by the legs so they give it a torsion box effect.
It's printed very thin with that in mind, but it was easier to put the drive on top and just let it flex. Hasn't changed in about a year so far.

I was actually worried about these drive caddy prints, but I used higher temp filament and they seem to work okay. The real test will be when I can afford the full 24 drives at the same time.

A ZFS SLOG, I'm pretty sure. It's basically just a cache for synronous writes that need to be written to disk. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it will help your read speeds. If you're running into write speed issues or are finding your drives are wearing out faster than expected, a SLOG will help (though it will then tank the wear and tear itself).

ZFS is slow when compared to other filesystems without CoW. It's actually really slow compared to them. Your best bet for read speed improvements is to use SSDs, use as much RAM as you can, and tune your recordsize/volblocksize to your usecase. For example, 1M recordsize is good for large media files. If you plan on "sending" emails from it, the provider must also allow outgoing port 25 and 465. Most do, but some you may have to open a support ticket to get them to open them up.

I put sending in quotes because receiving email is easy, sending has nuance. You can outsource sending+deliverability if you don't want to deal with that to a provider like mailgun or sendgrid.

Note that even if you want to, you CANNOT fully selfhost email at home. All residential IPs are all blacklisted due to spam (put your IP on https://www.dnsbl.info/ for funsies), so you'll always need a VPS to relay sending mail or that external provider I mentioned.
You can also relay both sending and receiving, so you keep all your email at home and only communicate with your home network, but then it all goes through the VPS.

All these relay shenanigans are just configurations in Postfix, no need for extra software. Email in the end is just Postfix and Dovecot.

What do you guys think of these 10" racks? There's a taller version I'd probably go for, also some deeper ones.

My use case is just as a glorified external hard drive, ideally with a 10GbE or whatever it's called for efficient distribution over wireless. The intent is to store market data in a binary, record-orientated format (which to my understanding is a great use case for spinning disks over SSDs, since I don't need random access). Essentially just recording the market tape, and would like at least ~100TB capacity initially to allow for sufficient backups.

Lately I've been on the fence about just going big from the start though and getting a full size rack.

Kind of regret buying a supermicro motherboard. I got it for a really cheap price and I only really want it for a simple NAS build. Every single case I found doesn't fit the CPU cooler backplate.
These fat as fuck backplate don't let me screw in the last screws. Because the motherboard is a weird orientation every single case I find doesn't work. Because even though the motherbaord is a micro-ATX, the weird CPU orientation conflicts with all cases. I need a case with longer standoffs. I can't just put my own longer standoffs either since raising the motherboard also raises the IO ports in the back.
Fuck me.
Or I can make a custom case, but fuck that. That's a lot more work.

I think the problems not necessarily the board but cases breaking specifications by having raised portions in the sheet metal for the mobo tray that otherwise shouldn't exist.
Both the board and the cooler are designed assuming a certain space under the motherboard as per ATX specifications
The case however is designed for the most common denominator. Where they can do anything with the mobo tray as long as a certain area is kept clear as they aren't expecting anything but regular gaming motherboards.

I'm fed up with my Mikrotik hAP ac2 (died on me once requiring reflash + arbitrarily removed some features that are available on Linux + WiFi issues that make me need to buy a dedicated AP anyways), I want to replace it with something based on Linux like OpenWRT.

they always assume modem use-case for USB RNDIS devices, you can't bridge or bond them etc. On Linux, USB RNDIS simply shows up as any other Ethernet device, you can bridge them, bond them etc.
They removed GRETAP and replaced it with their EoIP.
I'm pretty sure i remember Wireguard having some arbirtary limitations too.
All of those things work just fine on a generic Linux box using standard utilities.

I could use an upgrade for my current R330 though (would love a dual Xeon Scalable chassis like R440), then i could reuse R330 as a router instead. If I decide it pulls too much power, I might go back to hAP ac2 but flash it with OpenWRT, I think it's supported.

Whatever you end up using, the most important thing is to use a filesystem with checksumming, like ZFS. In the past I was burned by an AsMedia SATA controller that corrupted data, i was only able to tell because ZFS reported those errors (and repaired them online because i was running RAIDZ1 and only 1 drive was behind the SATA controller). Imagine running ext4 or NTFS and being blissfully unaware that your data is getting destroyed by the controller.
Since then i've only used AHCI or HBAs, both without issues.
For external HDDs the absolute best would be to have a proper hot-swap chassis behind AHCI/HBA and drives in caddies. Picrel is my offline backup i sync once a month (older photo, i now have 5 backup drives). But i get that it might not be easy to get a proper hot-swap chassis, 3.5" tower workstations tend to be very expensive, 3.5" rack servers are cheap, but are less convenient if you don't have a rack already.

99% of you people here could solve most of your problems by running mirrored metadata special devices on top of your RAIDZ pool. Use the small blocks property to throw tiny shit into your mirrored specials. You can set that per dataset, so you can have a dataset for performance stuff that exists solely on your mirrors. You don't even need SSDs for your specials. I ran on straight rust for years. You get faster resilvers, faster metada lookup operations (IE directory lookups of folders with thousands of files, and less fragmentation over time.

I only upgraded one of the drives each of my specials to an SSD relatively recently. You can use a module parameter to effectively force ZFS to exclusively read from SSDs within a mirror and only read from the spinners if it encounters a problem with the SSD(s).

Obviously your write performance is still going to be bottlenecked by the spinners, but you can have proper redundancy, snappy read performance, and bulk storage all on one pool for the price of a single SSD on top of the spinners. My security cameras go on a pool that doesn't have metadata specials because I don't give a shit if it takes an extra minute to pull footage twice a year, but everything else is running at least one SSD on a mirror. I haven't touched L2ARC outside of work (where we actually need it for 20-40TB hot sets) in years. There's no point. I can trivially saturate 25GbE off my NAS. Either it's large files the RAIDZ handles, or it's purely on the SSD.
