PhD comp bio. The academic market is so shit that I couldn't even get a postdoc after >300 applications (basically every single lab in my specialization in the world) despite having young prof-tier stats. I was even told by a prof with 15 years as a prof and fewer citations than me that I should give up on a postdoc because I didn't have enough citations (he had 1/500th my citations at the time he got his first postdoc).

Academic pay outside switzerland is total garbage, not enough to survive in the vast majority of the world. It is widely regarded, including semi-openly by profs, as a form of slavery. Some countries like in the nordics have livable, though barely, wages for this though, so it's all good.

Industry research jobs in comp bio are nearly non-existent. The few that exist have wide ranging pay grades depending on if the org sees comp bio as a cost center (you don't want to work there anyway, you'll be clicking a button all day and that's about it, just working as a pipeline monkey - but you can't work there even if you want to because they want bio exp and put 0 value on compute exp, which is why everything is broken and nothing is reproducible in the field), or a value driver. The jobs are hyper competitive because they're so few, and not stable employment.

That said, if you do luck out and go to a real serious biotech that has actual bio that you can interact with while you work on the comp, and real comp where you build new algos, it's amazing. Everything I've ever wanted. Impactful work that actually gets to patients, extremely interesting discoveries, huge breakthrough potential, work on real algos and not saas bullshit, intellectually stimulating. You typically don't make bank, but it CAN happen. 0 potential to make your own startup though, too high upfront costs and VCs expect that you have bio proof first (comp proof is ignored) before they give you a dime. Career wise pretty limited advancement potential.

On my physics course we did a practical which was to work with a very simple computer, programme it in machine code to do numerical operations etc. Then at the end wrote a simple compiler to make the process 10x faster. The sleep thing could have also been that two nights previous I pulled an all-nighter to try and fix my schedule, staying up around 33 hours straight, and even driving halfway across town both ways near the end of it without dying. I'll sometimes call myself a functional alcoholic for sleep deprivation, but I don't know how well that actually holds up for anything that requires memorization or focus.

I take the Core 2 test tomorrow. I studied for them both together.
I had the cert about eight years ago, when I was a much more lax student, not paying for my own classes, and generally not caring about my future.
Now I'm 27, sharing a workspace with other highschool dropouts, and kind of slowly panicking about it.

Reality of the matter is that A+/Net+ is straight resume padding that is both a waste of time, money and effort. I always recommend reading both then getting Sec+ because sadly a bachelors in IT barely covers the content of those 3 certifications.
