Working stresses me out so bad bros, how do you deal? I only ever put like 10% of my best effort in to my job, and it's starting to genuinely make me neurotic. I fuck up constantly. I'm not charismatic or overly social with my coworkers. I'm CONSTANTLY on edge that I'm finally going to get that "Anon, why is you computer literally asleep for 80% of your working hours" message, but instead I just get praise. I end up leaving every job as soon as I get another decent offer because I'm so sure that my past laziness/complete disregard for responsibility is going to catch up to me if I stick around too long.

Bumped into my old IT Director today at a fishing convention of all things. He was actually really nice and seemed normal, although he didn't recognise me at all. He's officially retired at 55, said he started at helpdesk and stayed with the same company until he became head of IT at 48. Did it for 5 years and then one day on the way to work though he'd hand in his notice and quit. He's a single guy with no family and said he has all the money he needs, would rather spend time enjoying things. I thought this only happened in American movies.

You guys ever thought you reached the perfect point to die? I'm getting laid off this month, and the job market is looking worse than ever. My dog recently died too. I'm married but without children. However, I've managed to save up a considerable amount of money, enough for my wife to live comfortably until she finds someone new. I'm wondering, is this the perfect point? Only downside I'm seeing is that I'll be, well, dead, but other than that there's nothing really negative. I won't have to suffer months or years of unemployment or the pain of starting over in a new career, and the money will last longer supporting only one person.

They're giga paid and command respect by default, so they aren't going to try and big dog you. They don't have any reason to be weird, insecure, or bitter. As far as coming in and making cuts: also unlikely. I guess it ultimately depends on whether your old boss LEFT or was FIRED. If he just left: don't sweat it. The new guy isn't going to have an incentive to shake things up- as far as his superiors are concerned, the department already meets expectations. And it's not like he can get a promotion for really knocking it out of the park. But if something fucks up, there's nobody above you to take over and drive a fix, you have to do it yourself. And failure can mean killing the startup outright and thus your paycheck. But because you have this ability to drive things, you also get to learn things and do things. In big tech companies you get stuck using this portal to offboard people and that portal to restart a machine and that's it. You get to learn nothing and do nothing useful. Some people prefer this, especially since you get the RSUs for this. That said, doing nothing and learning nothing does not mean you get to work 2 hours a week. If you're lucky, yes. It could also mean you're working 80 hours a week doing nothing useful, which is very common. Up to you if you prefer doing that toward something interesting and new, or something useless and boring.>why wouldn't i pick the job with higher TC, and if i fancy, invest the surplus into state bonds and index funds?RSUs also need to vest and you can also be laid off before then.

>>109771092has anyone here dealt with a private equity buyout? It happened at my company about a year ago but there's only been 1 person laid off in that time, they're pushing everyone to use AI as much as possible. The thing is I know I could automate 90% of my job if I wanted to. I wouldn't really say it's a "tech job", it's wfh and I do emails/calls and sit in a CRM all day. I wrote some browser extensions that make me work twice as fast as anybody else on my team and am consistently the top performer, the rest of my team is pretty tech illiterate. Every 1 on 1 with my boss he asks how I'm using AI.Obviously if I automate my job and show them they won't need me anymore, but is there any path forward where they realize I'm not retarded and want to keep me on doing some kind of automation shit or something? I don't care about my job, I just want "a" job.
>>109780854>frankly, the thing i like doing most is troubleshooting. gather evidence, straighten it out, find the missing piece, get thanked by the person for solving the issue.>i don't mind building something like a script or stuff to automate repetitive things but if you told me to gather requirements and build something big from scratch i'd probably panic.Yes, this is a much better fit for a big company than for a startup. It's just a question of preference.People like me are the opposite: we die inside when we have to just maintain and debug shit, we strive when we can build things, especially but not necessarily from scratch. Bonus points if it involves product thinking instead of just being given some specs.
>>109780882If its PE then they know how to make money on a failing company. Consider saving every single paycheck from now until its over. If you want to put it somewhere safe where it makes you money then do a CD/T-Bonds that don't have a penalty for pulling it out if you need it. My company fucked up its finances so bad the CEO got drunk on a company wide meeting(he was wfh) to tell us why the company was sold. Our larger company right now is praying for attrition to weedout higher paying employees to replace them with cheaper employees.
>>109780898>CEO got drunk on a company wide meeting(he was wfh) to tell us why the company was soldlmao, well that's never a good sign is itunfortunately it's not a super high paying job, like I said I'm just some email/CRM guy. I save a bit from every check but it's not much more than the cost of living. If I lost my job today and got no severance I could survive maybe 3 months before I'd have to lose my apartment, but yeah it definitely is looking like it's a sinking ship. I just know that out of all the people I work with on a daily basis I'm the only one who could actually automate shit if I wanted to, and since they're pushing AI on us all there's maybe a path to staying on. I'm probably just fantasizing though, it's probably over for me no matter how I try to spin it.I think I'm just gonna automate my job and keep it to myself, and then when my team is on the way out I could show my boss what I came up with and hope that's interesting to them. If they're laying us off anyway then there's no loss for me there
Unrelated, but I wish industry leaders behaved more normal. My company pulled the trigger and adopted ai coding tools this year. I've been using Kiro for about four months now. It's a pretty neat tool. My team had some long collaboration sessions to figure out how to set up appropriate steering and hooks for Kiro. It reliably outputs 80% of an ask, and honestly the remaining 20% is mostly correct too simply because Kiro infers that those spots come from applications we don't have access too, and that's fine because we can quickly work through those bits it can't.But the fact that leaders are so high on their own bullshit is really really off-putting. They definitely don't understand that, if they just acted like normal fucking humans, the pushback towards ai would be far less.

Looking for serious replies, and maybe a couple of stupid ones. What is the standard when it comes to working with AI these days? I'm convinced my CEO is suffering from AI psychosis and my boss and team manager are joining the ride. The guy spends all day reading articles from AI "expertes" (Linkedin midwits and a varied breed of snake oil salesman) and is constantly rushing us to implement the latest meme shit and burn tokens like crazy. Recent claims of his include that programming is dead, that you no longer need to know anything about the codebase and that reviewing PRs is a waste of time simply because Claude codes better than you.
>>109781370well, we're all here working in "ai-first" orgs, struggling to deal with the massive changes that the slop generatesthe management are scared of falling behind but nobody is doing 100x numbers with ai yet, if anything, we're all being slowed down by this culting
>>109781370I use Kiro, which is a IDE integrated with lots of AI models, works great, but I also code review whatever Kiro is doing every prompt and ask it to document whatever it changes. Now about you boss, he can probably create CRUD apps or simple reports without needing to actually know how to code, but good luck doing anything complex, you need to tard wrangle Claude until it does what you want.
>>109781370I don't use it that much, but some guys in my office do. Mostly analysis and help with debugging, possibly generating small pieces of code or boilerplate. Generating larger pieces of code tends to lead to slop code, and you always need to double check and verify what it spits out. It should be thought of as an assistant rather than letting it take wheel. I don't sleep, I eat like shit, I have no friends, No social life and I'm fucking miserable. There it is, I code for fucking money and I didn't make it.

I joined Company X recently as a staff software engineer and I’m starting to feel like they hired me at a level that’s too high for me.They actually hired me one level above my previous level even though my YOE didn’t really justify it. I had two competing offers at the time, so I feel like that might have played a big part in it.I don’t think this is just imposter syndrome. I genuinely feel like I’m underperforming for my level.I asked my manager how I’m doing and he said I’m doing well because I’m “very agile,” but it felt like a pretty generic answer. Also, just from interacting with him, I don’t feel like he’s very excited about the work I’m doing. I think I execute the things we agree on pretty well, but when I finish something, I never really get the feeling that he’s excited or particularly happy with it. At the same time, I don’t feel like I’m working on anything very impactful either.I really like the job and the salary, and I don’t think I could easily find another job paying this much. But asking my manager directly if I’m going to pass probation feels really weird. What would you do in my situation? Just keep going and see what happens, or start interviewing now as a backup?
After a long battle with my boss, ceo and team manager about how they want us to use AI I finally gave in. They said understanding the codebase is no longer necessary. They don't want me to "waste" time reviewing prs if Mr. Claude can do it better. They said it was time to evolve and embrace AI, so that's what I did.I haven't read a single pr, plan or claude question in a month. Rest assured, all of my prs are approved by my manager in case there's any trouble, which I doubt, because AI is wonderful.Today I just finished crafting a custom agent that pulls tasks from Jira, work in erratic time lapses, leaves comments using my writing style. Mouse jiggler is working like a charm and if anyone calls me on Teams I just pick it on my phone. They must be proud of me.

Career advice please!I'm going into my CompSci Master's soon. I work as a tutor on the side, am considering creating a small business for a minor project me and 3 friends are working on, and I got an offer to work as a student worker for the city's fire department's software engineer group. All of this sounds fine, but I honestly prefer working with people rather than solely coding, and I honestly don't have any morals outside of making enough money to wife up a hot chick a few years younger than me. What should I do? Reject the city's offer? Desperately look for internships at big companies during my master's? Go into a niche field?I'm very social, decently looking, and a quick learner. I prefer CompSci theory over praxis I'd say.

I fucking hate dealing with other people that have something that I want.
