I spontaneously bought used E495 for ~$150. Specs:
>Kingston 32 GB RAM 2400
>256 GB + HyperX Furry 480GB
>Cooler from E595
>Fully AMD (3500U and Vega 8)
>Flawless condition
because previous owner was drafted
Was it a good deal? I'm still biting my elbows to find used T14s Gen 4 (or later) AMD with reasonable pricing - that shit costs like $1000 in my country, lol.
Nevertheless, I also want to install Mint XFCE to see if I'll switch to loonix.

that alone's already worth more than the laptop itself right now lol, good buy.

How much did you pay for it at the time? Because I got a refurbed T14 G2 with 16 GB for €300 two months ago. Adding another new 16 GB stick would cost €120.
If you really paid €420 for a then-current G1 with 32 GB, I want in on whatever scheme you used.

>b-but that will cause the entire market to crash
Aww yiss.

>>
>>109824685
>How much did you pay for it at the time?
A little over 1,000 american freedom credits (including tax). I must add that it's an AYYMD system. I am noticing an AMD tax on 2nd hand systems. I can't find a used (in good condition) AMD T14 G1 with similar specs that's not beat to shit.
>>
>>109824932
>I am noticing an AMD tax on 2nd hand systems.
Absolutely. Resellers know how far ahead AMD was during those years and adjust their prices accordingly. I think AMD models were also sold in lower quantities, because the T14 G2 AMD is nearly impossible to find in my country.
>I can't find a used (in good condition) AMD T14 G1 with similar specs that's not beat to shit.
I found one in great condition for €280, but it only had 8 GB RAM, a 256 GB SSD and a badly stickered keyboard. It was worth it for me because I had a spare 8 GB stick and 512 GB SSD lying around and Lenovo had a new keyboard on sale for €16, but that kind of illustrates the problem. Buying used laptops is only worth it anymore if you can settle for the minimum specs and upgrade them yourself.
>>
>>109825045
Two years ago, I snagged an open box X13 AMD G3 with 32gigs ram and 2TB SSD for $933 plus tip. It was mint. It had no WWAN module, but I was able to install a WWAN card that takes e-sim and rig an internal antenna that I had to cut to fit. I wish somebody would make the call and cut this circular financing bullshit.
>>
>>109823333
What would be a good laptop to buy? I just want min 16GB of ram, an SSD, decent battery life and not too pricy.
I don't even need it for gaming. I have a desktop but I'm afraid of buying a laptop in 2026 with less than 16 GB of ram.
>>
Buying Dell Latitudes and Elitebooks might be cheaper nowadays because sellers have caught on to charging people more for thinkpads. Actually, I used to have a Toshiba Satellite but I threw it away after installing linux mint on it. I don't remember why

Based E6410, I really regret not getting that in 2015 instead of the E6400, at least I would've been on then current DDR3 for a little while and only one behind during DDR4, Having a Core 2 duo with 4GB 800MHz DDR2 was painful even since Sandy bridge due to proliferation of ultrabooks, but it hurt even worse when the sexy ass T470 dropped with 15w and I had a freaking chud laptop with Windows 7 on it because I didn't Linux like an idiot

Good times though

>Also e6410 was the last laptop that dell make really robust and simple to service
The design of it was the last time they looked like serious business laptops, the E6420 that came after looked like a goddamn consumer laptop from Best Buy, Lelnovo has done some stupid ass shit but they still know how to make their business laptops look the part in spite of how thin and ultrabooky they are, they look fantastic.

Yeah the blockyness makes it for me, my T470 is total ultrabook and everything that people wished old chunky ass T series could've been due to limited technology, but it's got that boxy look, they made the case black like the old days instead of that grey shit the T440-T460 was, it was the classic thinkpad look, but thin and good.

Sure, it's not the best international pricing but it's reasonable I think. I'd prefer to avoid international shipping, on top of which I would have to pay tax, making the hassle-free 400 USD deal much more attractive for me.

You guys know the typical runtime with the 3 cell battery on a U class chipped thinkpad? I'm debating to get the 3 cell or 6 cell, I wish it didn't make the laptop sit at an angle but if it's that much more battery life, it's worth it as a replacement.

I've done a shared folder on my T470 then folded it up and placed it somewhere like some sort of solid state blade server temporarily, it's such a low power beast that was built for work, but go ahead and put 16GB of RAM in that Sandy T520 Anon, it deserves it, that's still an awesome laptop for Linux shit.

>>109829397
My T480 draws between 5.5 W (reading a PDF, medium brightness) and 11 W (watching FHD video, full brightness). So about 2 to 4 hours with a single 3-cell battery and the other battery slot empty. With a single 65 Wh 6-cell (it's hard to find true 72 Wh ones), about 6 to 10.5 hours.

Holy fuck that's really impressive, my 7300U said it was using like 12.48W on HWmonitor under Prime95 small fft, I should be fine because Kaby dual core is such a power sipper even though it's weaker than the coffee lake.

In that range you can probably get a G5 with 32 GB, maybe a G6. G5 and G6 are the same chassis with mildly different guts. Avoid "refurbished" offers and just go for second-hand, best if you can physically go there and test it before buying.

Not really. Ireland doesn't have many options, sadly.

In my country Norway T14 gen 2 and 3 usually go for around $300-$400. The gen 2s a bit more refurbished than the gen 3, but both feel worth it.

It's the last AMD gen without the notchshit AND upgradable RAM. Gen 3 AMDs is soldered, and Gen 4 onwards is notchshit
>>
>>109836144
It's all about what you're getting for the money, that's why the "best thinkad" always slowly moves forward, it's because new stuff comes out, old stuff drops in value immensely and becomes a great value on the used market, That was the case of the T480 for a while before social media told even non computer people to buy this thing and the value went crazy despite the computer getting older and older, fuckin thing's 8 years old now and people want almost as much money as a newer computer from the store that has working battery and is newer technology, totally flipping the value prospect of why we like these things on its head.
>>
>>109836159
>without notchshit
I didn't notice that, would be worth for some indeed.
>>109836169
Yeah, I understand that it will move forward naturally but I thought ease of maintenance is also taken into consideration. Like I get modular RAM is there but wouldn't the G5 trounce it soon enough since it has that too yet without the hassle of accidentally breaking your chassis' pins when opening?
>>
>>109836180
Yeah the modular RAM is based but stuff like the T470/T480 can officially only go up to 32GB of RAM, and the later ones with with their whack ass soldered DIMM can go up to 40 or 48GB of RAM and they've got faster everything overall, that's why I tell people to get the newest fucking computer you can afford, and don't overpay for something that's old.
>>
>>109836159
T14 didn't get the webcam notch until Gen 5.
The notch isn't even bad, it makes opening the lid easier.
Your bitch ass should really be worried instead about the rounded corners on the LCD bezels that are now with the new Gen 7 T14.
Square IPS LCD has rounded corner bezels blocking off the active corners of the LCD.
This happened because OLED retards complained the bezels didn't match the OLED panels native rounded corners, now IPS panel chads got fucked with rounded corners.

And I don't get why you niggers bitch about soldered ram so much. The battery life and iGPU gains from going soldered are very noticeable. Get the max amount of ram from the start and you'll be fine. The weak ass CPUs will be obsolete way sooner than when you'll run out of ram.
>>
>>109836300
Not only that, the soldered CPU alone has made thinkpads so much slimmer without that damn socket sticking up off the board, and then when they deleted those stupid DVD drives they could have two DIMMs not stacked ontop each other like the old days and making the laptop thicker for no reason, so not everything that Lenovo does apart from going away from 7-row keyboard was without its benefits.

The soldered ram trope is SAID to be about ram failure functionally bricking the laptop. It's SAID to be a user-serviceability issue. But what they never say is the actual failure rate of soldered ram, much less its comparison to ram socket failure or other soldered motherboard components. There have been at least 4 or so instances of ram socket failure that I'VE seen /tpg/ posters confirm in the last year, and zero "soldered ram bricked laptop" claims. Yes, this is anecdotal, but it's what I have personally observed. I'll wait for the (You)s giving their anecdotal rebuttals.

That aside, the ACTUAL problem with soldered ram is the ewaste issue. If the model has fully soldered ram, there's no upgrade path. No "buy cheap business laptop with 8gb and upgrade it yourself, like we all used to do 10-15 years ago. /tpg/ sees dozens of the "IT Department Special" models on eBay with 8gb of soldered ram for $100 and the 16gb/32gb+ models for $200-300 and get pissed because they can't buy the $100 one. Lenovo fucked THEM PERSONALLY and soldered ram is to blame for them having to dig into their pocketbook so now "all soldered ram bad".

And I get it. The enshittification inherent in designing paper-thin laptops has tradeoffs none of us like. I like seeing business hardware get a second life as "prosumer" hardware with yesteryear's specs, as much or more than the next guy. All of the tech at my house is old or at least shit I bought used and cobbled together.

Blame the internationalen finanzjuden that foist this environmentally wasteful shit upon humanity. Soldered ram, in and of itself, isn't bad or more failure-prone than anything else soldered to the motherboard (CPU, chipset, ram socket, nvme slot, gpu, various I/O or power ports, etc) that - if it failed - you wouldn't throw it away anyhow and not screech Yiddishly about that specific component failing.

I was very lucky to find it, and the timing was perfect. A local not for profit computer recycling place that sells used computers and parts donated to them just checked through this machine and it was up for sale eight days ago. They do not list their stock online, you are encouraged to drop by or e-mail first to see what they have. Originally came with 8GB ram but I asked if they could upgrade it since their prices were more than reasonable in these crazy priced ram times. They even offered me a free laptop bag but I said keep it for the next person as I already had one. It feels nice knowing my money spent goes back into their not for profit business to help others get affordable computers. I bought what was their newest (8th gen) and most expensive laptop. The average cost for a few other Thinkpads and Dells they had that were just a bit older were $108 USD. The lowest priced laptop they had was $57 USD.
I made my previous post, the first post ever, with that t480 I just bought on Firefox - and then I get smacked with a "your ip range has been temp banned for abuse". This rolling IP blocks this year are a royal pain in the ass and they can last weeks/months. Now I am back on old desktop to make this post (presumably it has all the 4chan cookies I need).
One little neat thing with this laptop with Linux is that the backlit keyboard turns off after a few mins of not using it and turns back on when you use it. Under Windows it always just stays on. I wonder why? I haven't used Linux in over ten years and I'll be keeping it for a now with this fresh install it has.

Yeah you got real lucky, I just had a T470 complete with name drive for $80 arrive and that's getting lucky now because people are straight up parting these things out with ram and SSDs and selling what's left, so you're depending on a seller not knowing any better and selling the complete laptop for $100 to $150.

Disregard that last bit of text on the bottom.
So my post worked fine on my old Windows desktop. But under the same house wi-fi, I make one post with my new device and now it "temp" blocks me from posting, forcing me to verify e-mail to continue.
This site has gone to the dogs. I've had so many "temp" range ban issues on like four different IPs since the start of this year.

>>109836803
$80 sounds pretty good if its a complete t470. How much ram? Battery life?
>and that's getting lucky now because people are straight up parting these things out with ram and SSDs and selling what's left
It really is terrible what's happening out there these days.
I feel sorry for the poor machines getting ripped apart for no reason and people who are getting ripped off. It doesn't make it worth it to buy used when you have to overpay for the basic laptop "shell", then by overpriced ram and SSD.
If I was an asshole, I could likely flip what I just got, but I will be keeping this thing until it gives up the ghost.
Perhaps purchasing a laptop from a not for profit place would be a good option for people, if they have such places located near them locally.
>>
>>109836863
It's got the factory single 8GB DIMM and a 256GB NVMe drive with the 1080p screen and backlit keyboard, typical nicely configured T470, the battery doesn't hold a charge and I didn't get a charger but this is still what a "Good deal" on a T470 looks like at the moment, most of them are NO RAM NO SSD, keyboard missing because they sold it, etc, and then the rest of the laptop is hopefully recycled correctly, but it's still tragic to lose any usable T470 because it's a beautiful little laptop..
>>
Why does every laptop coming out now emphasize being huge and having a massive screen? In my experience smaller laptops are better

Bought this X270 for $40. Fully working, with 8GB of RAM. It didn't come with an SSD, but I already had one lying around, so I put it in. It has the original Lenovo battery, with around 80% health.
Overall, it's in nice condition. The only caveat is the cracked palmrest, but it doesn't bother me too much at this price.
I love how it has an easily removable battery and USB-C charging.

I have this exact model. It's nice. The CPU can probably last you >5 years and RAM can be expanded to 40 GB. Comfy keyboard. Screen is IPS and reasonably bright but color accuracy is a lottery. I have the worse 45% NTSC version but it doesn't hurt my eyes or anything.

Weak points are battery life (expect 6h of reading, 4h of actual work, <3h of video call in an Electron piece of shit) and trackpoint lag on Linux. Latter can be fixed with these patches: https://github.com/Paul-Eau/smoother-trackpoint-fix

I'd say repair is generally easier than with older pre-ultrabook laptops. You almost always have to take the bottom cover off, and it's tough to unclip it especially the first few times, but its screws are captive, and once it's open you have access to everything. Keyboard can be replaced without opening the cover, but its screws need a smaller Phillips head than the rest. Dark side of repairability: soldered USB-C charging ports (but at least there's two of them).

Basically a gaming laptop.
He wants £800 for it which is about £300-400 less than that spec is selling used on eBay.

The soldered RAM, soldered WIFI card and stuff I've heard about Dell build quality are kind of putting me off though.
Also the screen is only 350 nit which doesn't sound like enough for a glossy oled.
Anyway I'll get to see it in person on monday and make make a decision.

Even though it's soldered, 32GB is a shit ton Anon, you can spend like $900 on an Acer gaming laptop in my country and get only 16GB of RAM and a 1080P screen, 4K OLED and an i9 is a badass computer

Framework makes better keyboards for their Framework 13 than what you get with modern ThinkPads.
I'm talking in terms of audible noise and key press consistency.
The Framework 13's 2nd Gen keyboard uses plastic stabilizers instead of metal ones so the key presses (space bar too) are relatively mute.
Meanwhile, ThinkPads keyboards are loud and obnoxious.
Every key sounds different, there's just no consitency.
Huge lack of quality, Lenovo just doesn't fucking care.

I removed the CMOS, which just made date/time reset, but the password lock screen was not removed. It turned out it was not only the power on password that was active, but also the supervisor password. I could only remove it by shorting two pins on the EEPROM chip during boot.

For anyone reading this post on (desu)archive:

I identified the EEPROM chip on the X61 tablet with the help of this archived webpage: https://web.archive.org/web/20210507130925/http://ja.axxs.net/x61_s_t.htm
It's a PS08 Eeprom chip behind the modem card, at the left of the LAN card. I need only to remove the keyboard, palmrest and the modem card to access it on the X61T. On other models it may be at the back of the motherboard (and you're screwed).
That page also shows where the chip is in other thinkpad models.

Then, I used this indian guy video tutorial on youtube on which pins to short, when to short (and unshort) during boot, and what to do on the BIOS setup: https://youtube.com/watch?v=FW-RLkzjAS8
The pins are the SCL and SDA ones, at the opposite end of the circle thing (see archived webpage).

I was trying to use a programmer clip to short the pins, but the clip was too big; then i tried a copper wire, but it was too clumsy to hold; then i rembered i have a multimeter, and disconnected its test probe and used its tip to short the pins.

It's all right now :)

I have a T420s lying around that I haven't used in a bit, it still works fine but the battery is shit and it only has a 128gb SSD in it iirc (I used it for high school). I need the instantaneous indexing without input from me, so my team only tells me the file name for any document needing my review, instead of either (1) them messaging me the whole directory (we have a lot of subfolders); or (2) me going through said subfolders. Search Everything has been ingrained in my workflow so deeply it's insane.
>everyone thinks I'm a wizard the way I pull up files
>I tell them just name your files properly and use SearchEverything
>wow anon youre'are a wizard

On my 7500U/32gb ram using a standalone client (Freetube) got me better performance than in a browser, although I do get hit with the dumb sign in anti-bot prompts more often. Not too big a deal since I'll just reconnect to my VPN server, but it's an annoyance I put up with. I can't really speak for Intel 8th gen since I went from 7th gen to an AMD AI 9 370, but so long as you're modest with your video playback demands I suspect T480's could coast along for another 5 years before things really start to hurt.

I do miss Everything, fsearch is close enough but after like a decade using Everything I still have muscle memory for my old keybinds to pull it up. Luckily I don't need it for work stuff so hitting Ctrl+Shift+R to manually refresh my directories for personal use isn't a dealbreaker.

>I suspect T480's could coast along for another 5 years before things really start to hurt
Kek I'm keeping my T470, my 32GB problem solver for the next decade I don't give a shit
>>
Is there anyone here that has a Gen 14 X1 Carbon?
>>
Does the X1 Carbon Gen 10 suck? Is 750 CAD (~530 USD) a bad price for one? I saw one up for sale for that price with 32gb ram

>ultrabook with 32GB
It's worth it Anon, even a non ultrabook laptop brand new is a dumb amount of money, and a brand new Ultrabook with 32GB? Forget about it.
>>
>>109860686
It's used, not brand-new, but it looks to be in pretty good condition. I'm only hesitant for a couple reasons, firstly because it would definitely be a bit overkill given the things I would actually do with a new laptop if I got one, and secondly because I've never had a newer thinkpad and I've heard nothing but negative things about the newer models.
>>
>>109860722
A used thinkpad is better than anything you can buy from the store Anon, and the complaints about new thinkpads have to do with design and keyboard changes, nothing to do with their durability as business machines, you can still drop it on the ground or get a little liquid on the thing and it's not gonna be insta-killed like an Apple Laptop, Would it be nice if they still had the old 7 row business laptop keyboard? Yes, but technology in a newer thinkpad blows away what was available a long time ago, and the classic design isn't worth using older technology that doesn't do very much with the power it consumes for no reason.

>>109851636
Thinkpads do this thing where they don't leak power when nothing is plugged into the HDMI port. Its very useful for getting actual work done as opposed to larping.
>>
>>109860675
Sounds fairly decent for the price. A 12th gen intel cpu will last for a long time still, and 32 gb ram should also be good for a while.
I mostly go for the T models, and T14 gen 2 and 3 are probably the best overall buys right now. But the X1 is pretty decent for a more light weight model. Never really used the pen I must admit.

so I revived my thinkpad
though I'm not sure about the OS ... I think I'll try omarchy next

Wtf Anon a quad Core Kaby refresh laptop should never be put in a situation where it's not used, that's a goddamn beast.
>>
>>109862714
yeah anon i had to use macbooks on my last job but luckily I got laid off due to AI and now can get back to linux and proper hardware :D
>>
Any good Laptops with HDD ports? I got a 1TB HDD/SSD hybrid I'd like to use.
>>
>>109862812
The T470 and T480 are pretty based laptops that could have a SATA caddy installed and a hybrid drive put in
>>
>>109862812
Some but not all L14 G2 Intel had one too, if T470/T480 are too slow for you
>>
>>109862687
framework better
>>
>>109862821
there's an extra mini NVME slot! maybe i should slap in the hybrid SSD from my PS4 into the caddy and buy an NVME for the other slot
>>
>>109863454
that's the WWAN slot my nigga
>>
>>109863501
It's the same interface Anon, just a lil shorter and they make shorty NVMe SSDs
>>
>>109865956
>and they make shorty NVMe SSDs
Good luck finding one in sufficient size.
>>
>>109866035
They're good for a secondary though
>>
>>109866194
outweighed by the usefulness of a WWAN card. Use keepgo and you'll always have backup data.

>However, the thinkpad cannot recognize any battery, and only works on AC.
Actually, it recognizes, just does not charge.
When i connect the battery while laptop is on AC, the Windows tray icon shows that a battery got attached, and the charging LED starts blinking. But it does not charge: led keeps blinking yellow, and the tray icon says "0%, not charging".
May it be a problem with the DC-in connector?
>>
>>109867090
or the battery failed and refuses to charge
