only worht it if you are using high res without upscaling or supersampling

Meme connector, bad price performance, still the best buy (at the time)

This isn't quite the ideal thread for this, but there's not really an obvious better option:

Does anybody know anything about MST hubs?

I have two monitors, but I don't wanna have two cables running from my laptop to both displays, and would rather have a single cable going from my laptop to a hub, and then a displayport (or USB C to displayport) cable from the hub to monitor A, and a HDMI cable from the hub to monitor B

Is that possible? I looked at some hubs on Amazon but I didn't see any that seem to have both Displayport/USB C and HDMI outs

In general I can't find much info about MST hubs and I'd rather find someone or a guide that explains what to look for or avoid with them rather then just buying one at random

You don't realize that all these AI labs basically have their own copy of the entire accessible Internet for training.

While they are willing to burn money, they don't have money to burn to store all of it permanently on SSDs. Hot storage is still prominently HDD with SSD caching and will be for a long time.

Finally bought my own big rig recently. Has an XL sized sleeper cab that'll allow me proper room for gaming on the go. I play single player games 99% of the time and have been on the fence about building a PC or just buying a gaming laptop.

I know I know, but it would make things far more convenient. Power efficiency is a real concern of mine as well as reliability. Would I be better off building a lower power PC or just getting a laptop from a company like Sager? Are laptop "RTX 5070's" actual 5070s or just vastly cut down ones? I was looking to build something with the 7800X3D in it and a 9070 GRE, downclocking it all. Would have to be an ITX build.

>>
which hdr mode is better true black 400 or peak 1000?
>>
>>109826572
>SDR: 200
>HDR: 400 (Typ.)
It has the lower bin panel, the costlier QD-OLED monitors can guarantee at least 250 nits maximum SDR brightness.
The official spec sheet is claiming it can't guarantee all panels can't hit 400 nits peak brightness with HDR enabled, but most can (typical peak HDR brightness).
https://www.msi.com/Monitor/MAG-272QP-QD-OLED-X24/Specification

You should read the store's monitor return policy carefully before you unbox the monitor (restocking fee etc.)
The brightness specs don't matter too much if you usually keep SDR brightness near 100~150 nits.

Found out my PC was randomly restarting with a kernel power 41 error because of a faulty CPU. Serves me right to buy one from a physical store. Just bought the same model online and haven’t experienced any random restarts for 3 days. It’s too bad I didn’t try this 4 months ago. So much potential gaming time has been lost, and I won’t be able to spend much time on it now that college started again.
>>
>>109826649
Peak 1000 gets brighter highlights like explosions or sun glares, but it can artificially brighten dark scenes.
True Black 400 prioritizes accurately displaying dark scenes, but highlights won't be as bright (400 vs 1K nits peak highlight).

True Black 400 tracks the industry-standard PQ (Perceptual Quantizer) reference curve with higher accuracy in dark-to-mid tones, ensuring shadow detail isn't crushed or unnaturally boosted.

Try out both and pick whichever you prefer.
Monitor Unboxed HDR performance review section covers this stuff.

>>109826746
Yeah Sager is basically Clevo in the US. They use basic Clevo chassis and are very plain compared to companies like Alienware for instance. My buddy has a very basic Sager with an RTX 3050 Ti in it he bought years ago that is still going at 100% with no downsides or problems so far and he's been using it for gaming and actual school work. That was only a $1500 laptop then, so surely a laptop 4 times more expensive is just as reliable? We'll find out.
>>
>>109826658
Yeah if I want to return it I'll just let the monitor at the pick up point until it's resent to them.
I actually usually keep the brightness very low, in that case does the HDR peak brightness specs matters?
>>
>>109826721
Not yet. My second CPU is still within the refund window, so I can still send it back or keep it depending on whether AMD gives me a refund or a replacement part.
>>
>>109826792
>in that case does the HDR peak brightness specs matters?
That monitor appears to not support Peak 1000 nits HDR mode, so maximum HDR brightness will be capped to 400 nits.
I'd only keep the monitor if you got it at a really nice discount.
Return it if you spent a decent chunk of money.
It's not "bad", but it's hard to say whether you'll be fine with the HDR 400 nits brightness cap without seeing it for yourself.
I use TB400 for HDR but many other ppl, including Monitor Unboxed Tim, prefer the peak 1000 option.

The monitor is TB400 certified, at least MSI's official store page claims it.

About the TB400 certification, I've seen a lot of people claim it's not, on multiple seller pages it's not mentioned, and the specification PDF does not mention it either compare to the X28.

Paying 45 EUR more for the guaranteed TB 400 certification is worth it, even if you find the 1K Peak HDR mode to be a meme.
At least read the conclusion of the TFT article I linked (full screen content can be overall dimmer in 1K Peak mode vs stable TB 400 HDR).
The faster refresh rate might be worth something as well if you play online shooters.

I just realized something ridiculous.
I could sell my used RTX 3090 and 64GB of 128GB DDR4 ram to upgrade to a brand new RTX 5080 and have a little leftover cash.

I skip all the risk of a failing card and get a performance uplift, isn't this a no brainer?

I bought 128GB for 200€ just to experiment anyway. 4 tk/s is way too slow for my taste. 20€ subscription is more than enough for me.
As for the VRAM loss, it'll be fine, probably. Ultra video settings are overrated imo.

Yeah I read the full article, and considering I usually turn my brightness very low, I probably won't enjoy or need 1k peak mode. Just installed a 5800x3d to replace a 3900x, and I'm having trouble figuring out what's normal for the hotter chip, and what might be me fucking up the thermal paste or the cpu cooler being too loose. (NH-D15S, Arctic) Or maybe some kind of fault/defect.

CPU usage % always seems a lot higher than the 3900x, obviously because it only has 2/3 of the cores, or is this is a "positive" result of the 5800X3D taking up more tasks due to being moderately faster and having the X3D features? It seems to spike a lot in certain uses, and plateau at a level that I literally never saw with the 3900x even in stress tests.
For instance, with a low-speed fan curve the HWinfo stress test would get the 3900x to around 79C, cinebench something similar. In HWinfo the 5800X3D with the same fan curve seems unworkable at 86C. I didn't work out an ideal fan curve for the 5800X3D because I'm worried it's not working as intended, but with CPU and case fans at 100% (not a long-term solution), it's stable at 75C, still a few C hotter than 3900X would be, but expected.

In-game performance is peculiar - when loading games it spikes up over 80C and if I have a youtube video in a browser it glitches out with crackling pauses. Is that normal in a core-limited scenario or is this CPU weird in throwing all its multi-core attention at games?
In 3D games (SM2, 2077, RDR2) it seems hotter but relatively moderate at the high 60s, but in CPU-heavy games like EU5 it spikes over 82 regularly and the steady state is 75C (admittedly this was observer mode testing max speed, but slowing it down didn't change much).
The 3900X typically was in the 60s when gaming, worst case ~74C in a heatwave

Idle temperatures are reasonable - it gets as low as 43C when nothing is happening, maybe spikes to 60-65 when web browsing. Wattage doesn't seem particularly high when drawing these temperatures, worst I've seen is 125, but it gets in the 70s C when it's barely 80W, and 105W spikes it over 80C

If you use Ryzen + Windows you have to learn how to use process lasso or task manager, else you get all these problems.

For starters unblock your browser and/or games from core 0. That will solve all the stuttering.

Temperature is normal the L3 cache sits ontop of the CPU cores acting like a heat layer. They changed it with 9000 series where it sits at the bottom.
>>
>>109827983
My 9700x never stutters whereas my previous intel desktop stuttered a lot, it was bad, the sound got distorted, every intel cpu ive had did that

>>109827940
AMD's thermals are kinda just dog shit across the board.
They use cheap IHSs and it completely nukes the thermal performance. Your only real solution is to either delid it, or accept that the thermals are bad-but-not-overheating.
They run fine, it's not going to thermal throttle unless you use a tiny cooler, but the number is just higher than it really should be for what they are.

AIOs don't last forever. The liquid volume decreases over time due to permeation even if the pump continues to work.
Keep the D15 G2, that thing is supposed to easily last you over 10 years.
>>
>>109827938
>It's not foam though, it's very solid.
Yeah, because most case makers (Fractal, Cooler Master) use the cheapest possible panels that don't actually dampen any sound. Be Quiet has the Silent Base series which has actual thick dampeners and a custom side panel that curves on the top panel which also helps blocking noise.

>>109827945
Mass loaded vinyl is the outer most layer you put on soundproofed walls, on top of layers of fiberglass or foam or wool that actually absorb most sound. It's the same concept as snow creating dead quiet in the winter: all the small empty pockets in a semirandom structure will dampen the amount of movement the air can do, hence silence.

I haven't heard of that, I'll look into it, thanks.
>Temperature is normal the L3 cache sits ontop of the CPU cores acting like a heat layer
Yeah, that was really apparent in HWinfo, the L3 cache temperature was up to 20C cooler than the CPU cores. And the Tctl/Tdie was always around five or up to ten C hotter than the cores.

>>109828001
>or accept that the thermals are bad-but-not-overheating
I'll see how it goes in actual use before trying to repaste it a third time, having made a bit of a mess with it (the pictures on the Arctic website showed a lot more than is needed). I was a bit spoiled by how little fan noise the 3900X needed (it would have been even less on a 3700X), so getting used to a hot CPU will be a new experience for me (apart from back in the day when I knew nothing about computers and the noise they made brought a positive Pavlovian response). Tuning the fans will be a hassle, I might set it to a continuous moderate speed instead of spiking when the CPU is going crazy.

I did notice HWinfo never said it was thermal throttling, though with how PBO works it probably does self-limit in the 80s. Its clock speeds go all over the place compared to the 3900X where it spun up and then stayed relatively steady according to the demands of the game.

I don't think there's any stuttering within games, it was only starving the web browser that annoyed me. The brief period of running games for fifteen minutes at a time seemed to suggest the performance was where it should be - space marine 2 was night and day, no stuttering/framedrops.

I'd be curious to hear from anyone who went from a 5800X3D to a 9800X3D if they've ironed all this out.

so i bought a USB DAC amp for my IEMs and they worked well on my phone.
so i tried using it on my PC and i hear this popping/distorted noise when i play games or click through a video on youtube.
i tried all the bullshit solutions I've seen and went as far as reinstalling windows to see if that did anything and it did nothing.
did anyone else have this problem?
and if you did do you have a solution.

just so you can understand i'll just give a scenario:
I played Euro Truck and turned the radio on to listen to music, while i'm driving i hear random pops in the audio that happens for like 0.5 seconds then audio goes back to normal. and it happens a few more times while driving and even if i parked the truck.

What does this mean, how would I check for it, and what should I do about it? The CPU is stock, the RAM is 3600mhz on XMP.

What I mean by crackling is that if I have a youtube video in the browser, and then something else pushes CPU usage to a high usage, the video just shits the bed and stutters. This seems reproducible, eg: running a youtube video and then starting the HWinfo cpu stress test, though I also noticed it when loading up EU5. It stops as soon as I stop the CPU-stressing programme. It doesn't seem to produce a WHEA error in HWinfo or event viewer.

I found the curve optimizer setting in the BIOS and it seems stable at -30 negative, but it didn't change the way the web browser stutters in video when the CPU is fully stressed out by some other program. I get the sense that could be like >>109827983 said, a software issue, where the web browser gets sidelined undesirably when more demanding programs want all 8 cores.

I'll return the CPU to the factory stock settings to get used to those and see that it works, it was mostly the temperature that had me worried, but if it wants to run in the high 70s or even mid 80s instead of the low 70s, I'll just let it and have my fans faster.
Thanks for the inputs.

whats causing all those hard pagefaults my dude?
your dpc is sus ntoskrnl.exe is taking up 600us, the highest thing should be either the gpu driver or the program itself around 200-300 us.

my dude, the processes tab in the program literally tells you whats causing all the hard faults.
its when something cant be found in ram and has to access the drive. excessive hard faults means the cpu/ram is basically locked down as its searching from disk.

get rid of it then. theres dozens of disable windows antivirus shit out there. you can also take ownership of the exe (because microsoft wont let admins remove it normally) and rename/delete it.

nah I love VR games, in fact just about the only reason I might get tempted to buy a beefy GPU is for playing VR mods of certain games, like the Resident Evil and Silent Hill remakes:
https://rototrobot.github.io/VRMods-List/
And VR of course needs very high resolutions and very high framerates...

But the Frame can also play a lot of regular PC games via FEX.
Even on my shitty old Quest 2 I can run a Playstation 2 emulator, plenty of good games to keep me busy there.
Question is just if the displays and optics stack are good enough to do text-heavy work for several hours a day.

both, you can either play games on the thing itself or stream PC games to the headset via Wifi (which sounds horrible, because it is if you do it like the Quest implemented it, but Valve has done a lot to improve the experience)

C programmer here,
How does one ""solve"" cache misses? did they suddenly make RAM as fast as L3 or L2 cache?
Regardless, most competent programmers will have cache locality in mind when optimizing, I guess maybe webdevs and shitters who use linked lists can benefit from this but other than that it seems like hardware is trying to compensate for bad software designs which is awful, I think we need to stop trying to make hardware better and learn how to write software to utilize existing hardware properly, heck, a lot of shitty software could run 10x faster if it was multi-threaded or used x64 extensions like AVX2

I already told you before that using both 6+2 pin power connectors of the pig-tailed cable is safe for that Sama G- PSU.
Higher end PSUs (that Sama G- is A- tier) PCIe cables are most likely spec'd to safely deliver up to 300W (or more accurately 25A) per 8 pin PCIe connection.
http://jongerow.com/PCIe/index.html

The important distinction is to use at least two separate 6+2 cables
>GPU with 3x 8pin PCIe power headers: One 6+2 cable + both connectors of the pig-tailed cable (if higher end PSU)
>GPU with 2x 8pin power connection: One 6+2 cable + one connector of the pig-tailed cable (not single pigtailed in this instance).

>GPU with 3× 8-Pin Headers ( 300W+)
Use at least two separate physical cable runs from the PSU.
One dedicated single-connector 6+2 cable
One pigtail cable (using both of its GPU-side 6+2 connectors, assuming your PSU isn't garbage)

>GPU with 2× 8-Pin Headers (300W or lower)
Use two separate, single power cables if your PSU provides them, or one single cable + one power connector of a pigtail cable.

I want to pirate games. I don't exactly 100% trust the Denuvo hypervisor crack so I was thinking about building a dedicated, offline, PC just to play games. But computer parts are so expensive right now. While I do have the money and I can spend $3k-4k CAD on a new PC I wanted to ask this first.
Is playing modern games on a SATA SSD really bad? The PS4 uses SATA SSD and I actually didn't mind the speed. If possible I'd also like to put the OS on the SSD so I don't have to buy an NVMe just for the OS and a SATA SSD for my games.
>>

>Is playing modern games on a SATA SSD really bad?
It's fine for most games. A handful of new titles leverage NVMe SSD's faster loading, but NVMe storage aren't a strict requirement for these games.

On my IPS monitor it made things look worse for me. But I like the high contrast look of srgb mapped to the maximum gamut.
The weird thing is that firefox and edge have a different results. On edge, it will treat all the color spaces the same and max out the gamut. On Firefox, it will adjust srgb tagged content to be less colorful than true high gamut content.
This is with HDR mode OFF.
https://www.wide-gamut.com/test
If I turn on HDR mode, edge behaves similarly to firefox. But then firefox looks more desaturated (the colors are completely different than edge now, the hdr content is not correct either).
But I probably have a weird setting I enabled and forgot about in firefox, and I didn't restart my PC. You should just test it yourself and compare. Also I bet while gaming, the nvidia auto RTX HDR thing is probably worth using, but then I would probably turn off HDR when I'm done gaming (but I don't have an RTX nvidia GPU).

>>
>>109833907
A "real time" PC never bluescreens. It has perfect pacing between every component. It doesn't trip on itself like a fake time PC. Want to tell your PC is not real time? Go check your hw clock.
>>
>>109833922
you are still waiting on light to transfer between components and hitting your eyeballs
you need a faster-than-light-pc to be real time....
>>
>>109833889
nta but my pc autoruns firefox with catalog digest, opens all pinned threads, and starts preloading images, all before I even login.
so even if there was a power failure or other reboot, I get home, smile at camera (strictly locally processed) and it unlocks 4chan that's already there, waiting for me.
>>
>>109833972
>I get home, smile at camera (strictly locally processed)
your daily mandated smile... sir.

>I think it means he has been using the connector normally since it released and nothing has happened until now
"Trying for years now" doesn't mean he's been using the GPU & connector normally since release in that context.
Good on you for outing yourself as an ESL. Your thoughts don't matter.
>>
I bet this guy fried his shit the one time he tried overclocking and it really hurt his ego
hence the "noooo it's not funnnn" and "you're gonna breaaak it" anytime somebody brings up the subject lmao
>>
>>109834000
>"Trying for years now" doesn't mean he's been using the GPU & connector normally since release in that context.
making assumptions to fit your agenda, you are reaching to fit your narrative like a mf
again, you are still behind debunking every techtuber
stop being hung up on HUB steve

his use case is not "Normal" in the sense he is doing testing and unplugging it more often, you are again jumping to him purposefully trying to sabotage the connector on purpose, if that's the case why hasn't he been successful until now?

>Your thoughts don't matter.
Cope and rope you haven't debunked anyone yet and Jensen won't send you a free 5090 either
>>
it takes a PC far beyond extreme overclocking to get the going into games machine running. It's a lost art that barely anyone achieved in first place.
>>
>>109834024
He's an ESL as well, can't keep up with English-speaking OCing community.
>>
>>109834028
>making assumptions to fit your agenda
You are the ESL assuming "trying for years now" means he used the power cable normally, when native English speakers communicate the latter intent differently.
You lost.
>>
>>109834057
Ok, explain exactly what things he has done to try to fry his connector on purpose? Oh wait you don't have exact details on everything he tried? Sounds like almost you are reaching and making stuff up in your own mind as to what he did or not

no, "He did not use it normally" with assumptions does not count or imply anything

He has been plugging it in and out more than a normie because of test, that's about all we know

do you know more?

You made everything up in your mind so far by the way, waiting on the debunks on other techtubers also

>>109834024
Enjoy your bios screen lil bro
>"you're gonna breaaak it"
stop making up stuff I never said HAHA
>>
>>109834110
>Ok, explain exactly what things he has done to try to fry his connector on purpose?
You don't seem to understand that's not the important part of that comment.
He's clearly expressed an intent ("tried") to cause a melt on his power cable, for years.
It's not surprising that a guy who's "tried" to get his -90 series GPU power cable to melt eventually caused one.
I wonder why HWUB Tim never managed to get his -90 GPU power cable to melt. Probably because he never deliberately tried to exacerbate it.
Typical ESL.

Now explain exactly what he did with this intent to cause it? (You have zero ideas here btw)

Steve does the hardware testing as far as I know vs tim and the unplugging and wear is the only thing we can realistically assume has a point

the rest of the shit you are just making up

the connector is rated for 30 plug in and unplugs or something so you could say the connector is already fucked

have you debunked all the other techtubers yet also?

>MOTHERBOARD
>Avoid ASRock AM5 boards, CPU degradation issues still reported
Am I still safe with this combo?
ASRock B650M-HDV/M.2 AM5
AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3,8GHz
I did update the bios to the most recent version, so far so good. (It's been two years)
>>
>>109834211
You can continue to obsess on the part that doesn't matter.
The guy who expressed an intent, with a financial/business incentive to cause a GPU power cable to melt eventually succeeded in doing so.
These tech tubers you consider to be highly trustworthy all continue to use RTX -90 series GPUs afterwards.
>>
>>109834261
Every reply you have made so far has had 0 value or proof in them
>You can continue to obsess on the part that doesn't matter.
you are the one making assumptions out of a single line of text btw
>The guy who expressed an intent, with a financial/business incentive to cause a GPU power cable to melt eventually succeeded in doing so.
maybe because the connector is suspect? you still have 0 proof of what this "intent" means by the way to remind you every post, no your proficiency in English does not count as evidence btw

0 techtubers disproven
0 proof given
I gave you every point in regards to HUB that actually strenghten your argument btw
you lost by the way

>These tech tubers you consider to be highly trustworthy
more assumptions, did you disproven any of them yet?
>>
>>109833293
>every techtuber
Not even lienus tech tips has fucked one of these up that I recall. Are you sure you're not conflating absolute mongoloid tiktoks with actual tech people?
>>
>>109834329
>more assumptions
It's your job to refute my claim. These guys all have replacement RTX -90 series card back in their workstations.
I win because these guys still use RTX cards in their PCs.
Let me know when HWUB Steve switched over to a Radeon Pro card.
>>
>>109834252
Should be fine with the latest BIOS.
Not many Ryzen 5 CPUs were affected.
That board probably has safer auto settings to begin with.
>>
>>109833482
I see your line of thinking, but, the core issue is that ammo (games) from 10+ years ago still function fine in new guns as does new production ammo function fine in old guns up to 70+ years ago provided it's not some Bubba's pissin hot levels of firepower.
New Winchester white box 9MM Luger works in a Browning Hi-Power from 1972 the same as it works in a Glock 19 Gen 6

But with games; that is in no way true. We're being effectively shoehorned into near mandatory upgrades for critical components to keep up to par with new games (ammo); at exorbitant rates entirely due to the rise of AI and adjacent sectors kneecapping the production capabilities of major manufacturers in terms of consumer components.
>>
>>109834353
we already went through their names here

>>109834393
>It's your job to refute my claim.
Your concession on behalf of you being retarded has been accepted

>I win because these guys still use RTX cards in their PCs.
most of all techtubers had them replaced when they burned and continue using them, this has zero to do with the connector being fucked or not
Protip you are retarded

again, 0 of value has been added because you have 0 points to make, again retarded

you lost.

Still safe enough to continue using the replacement RTX -90 series card after a burnout. I win.
Let me know when one of the techtubers you worship swap out to a Radeon Pro.
>>
>>109834644
Great to save on stuff nobody wants. If I manage to snag a 5K monitor for a significant discount, I just might get a 9070 to power it (for 1440p dual mode hurr durr)
>>
>>109834636
You mean that amdunboxed guy who admitted to intentionally disconnecting and reconnecting the connectors until it finally failed? Aka the same thing that causes PCIE brackets to fail, as well as the other connectors inside a system?
>>
>>109833257
SATA SSD's are fine, I have both an nvme drive and sata ssds and it's really not that noticeable in practice. Just stay away from spinning hard drives or you'll get raped by high random access times.
