You know that 3600 is about the same as xeon e5 2680v4, right? If you want better than that, go for 5600. x3d is an overkill if you're not doing anything over 1080p.

>>109834590
>$1700 14 cores CPU from 10 years ago

Damn that's crazy.
My point is that apparently the 3300x performs about as well at the 3600 despite having less cores, and the 3100 gets close enough when overclocked as well so I'm wondering if they're good enough cheaper alternatives. I don't have any interest in any recent AAA UE5 slop anyway.
>>
>>109834573
i would save some more bananas ,invest into a 5500x3d and use it for like 10 years (im planning to use my 5700x3d at least that long)
>>
>>109834573
You're going to be buying a new motherboard too if you buy the 5500 and 5600?
I say get the 3600 since it's only 21% worse than the 5600, but you're paying 1.4x the amount than the 3600.
>>
>>109834749
I can just update the bios so that shouldn't be an issue anyway.
I guess I'll just keep waiting until I find the 3600 for 300 bananas (or if that 5500F they just released reduces the price of the normal 5500) for now then.

I want to bring up a topic regarding display sizes within the context of modern PC use. I use a respectable IPS 32" 2160p 144Hz monitor, but have contemplated OLED upgrade options with a variety of screen experiences. Bearing in mind I have a 9070XT and a 7900X:
>Latest 39" 5120x2160 ultrawides look cool and immersive, but are too high res to run well except on a 5090 (and even then), and have the typical aspect ratio issues
>Similar 34" 3440x1440 ultrawides would run even better than my current res, and having up to 360Hz would be absolutely awesome for improved clarity in motion, but then I'm dropping in resolution for everything from games and text to films and artwork
I'd probably have to sit further away too, and again, there may be potential aspect ratio problems
>Could get a 240Hz 31.5" OLED, basically the same size I already have, getting a better panel technology but effectively the same screen experience and not even as good HDR as on TVs anyway
>Consider the "OLED TV as a monitor" chill meme path, thinking the size and HDR performance could be cool for both games and films, but know how widespread the privacy/security issues are and how limited refresh rates can be, not to mention latency concerns with some models
I've given serious thought to all the cool options out there, done my research, looked at benchmarks; everything. Yet, it's really like nothing seems to hit the sweet spot outright. There's always something that just makes each type seem impractical somehow instead of being a solid performer I wouldn't have to fuss about. There's also the deal of balancing viewing distance for optimal PPD and immersion...and that's its own can of worms that I think needs effort to balance. Does anyone feel similarly? How would you approach this topic, anons?

You don't have to connect it to the internet, if you want to control it from your OS, you can have a straight up TV to PC connection with just a cable without sharing internet to the TV.
But yeah, you're stuck with like 165Hz and 42" if you want still decent PPI. No idea about latency issues, most have game modes, even extra LLM modes and support VRR.

I like ghelper over the standard asus management software.
you can even typically push +100 core + 200 memory. just make sure you've got proper ventilation underneath and are using the correct power brick (usb-c doesn't always work).

It just seems restrictive, you know? Wouldn't be able to use a bunch of its advertised features at all, may not be able to update its firmware, and so on. I also think the 38-42" range looks ideal for desk use as far as TVs go, and 165Hz with an OLED panel is technically an improvement over my 144Hz IPS I guess, albeit modest. Maybe it doesn't matter except for competitive games I play, since it's hard to hold 165 FPS in many modern games anyway. It'd be cool to get a glossy RGB stripe TV in that size range if they have any out yet.
>>109835504
I've heard about that one. Looks cool (albeit expensive), though it's a shame it has a matte coating. I'm not a fan of matte coatings on displays, and my room is comfortably light-controlled. I can't even imagine PC gaming on something that huge unless my desk was in the middle of my room with it on the wall, lmao.
>>
>>109835618
>and 165Hz with an OLED panel is technically an improvement over my 144Hz IPS I guess, albeit modest.
One benefit of OLED, TV or monitor is the response time, it looks smoother than IPS even at the same refresh, even without BFI and other fuckery.
Still have sample and hold blur but slower motions is very clear.

If you use it as a monitor it's mostly set and forget anyways, I'm scared of firmware updates anyways, if it already works when I first get it, I leave it at that. There's been shit like LG fucking up VRR with firmware updates. All the features you'd want for PC use like HDR, VRR, low latency mode work fine anyways otherwise, unless you also want to use it as a TV. Also nice to be able to control things like brightness from the OS with keyboard hotkeys.

Haven't some OLEDs implemented options for that? Since even the latest ones don't hold a candle in peak brightness to TVs, I imagine that's got to be SO fucking dim. No wonder not many people are likely to use it on OLED monitors even if offered.

It sucks it has to be this way. I imagine there could be modest improvements to latency or brightness, HDR performance, OLED care features, etc over time with patches. It just sounds nice to have all multimedia look great on one display with easy remote control to boot, you know?

https://github.com/JPersson77/LGTVCompanion/blob/master/Docs/Commandline.md

Open source, fully scriptable. I don't have it (my 42" C4) hooked up to the internet, only ethernet cable from TV to just a cheap 1Gbps USB ethernet dongle to my PC, just for direct control.
Can't remember last time I touched the remote, automatic on/off, suspend, blanking, works like any monitor plus literally every feature and key on the remote can be pressed, scripted or even make custom profiles switchable by shortcuts.
Really simplistic yet powerful program that runs as a service and only takes 3MB of RAM, must for any LG used as a monitor IMO.

Properly calibrated on a proper screen, like OLED or high end miniLED, it's just a overall nice effect.
It's something hard to explain, even in stores when you check it out, the floor is usually too lit to really experience it but you'd get a point.
OLED phone gives you slight idea too, watch some of those LG OLED demo videos on YouTube with quality set to HDR not normal 1080p etc.

Not a deal breaker to not have it, but having played with HDR for a few years now, going back to SDR does feel like a downgrade.

I was using it on oled phone screen, it was noticable but nothing jawdroping for me, in many cases it was overdone just to show tech, bit like OLEDs had saturation cranked up for years just to show how they are better than LCDs. But in games, I only associated that effect with stepping outside from indoors, and I figured all HDR will do is blind me even more in those situations—so I wrote it off as some useless crap. But desu it may be due to my habit of watching flat LCD screens. For me its just another gimmick that could be used but overall not a big deal for me.

Supposedly windows 24h2 has the same issue using autohdr in 10bpc with sdr games, but I'm still seeing as though I'm using the wrong color space or something, it always gets revealed on organic textures like foliage or human skin, you can feel it looks wrong or if you just installed reshade and sweetfx from way back for the same deepfried look

Might be better to just run sdr on OLED or mini led with local dimming on for old games for this reason

Depends, like UT'99 looks absolutely mint with the modern Vulkan renderer on a OLED with HDR.
Just had a match after the picture reminded me >>109837629.

It's hard to capture without the blacks looking crushed or the brights overbright and obviously it's a SDR picture of a HDR screen and depends on what you look it on too.

Yeah, Window's AutoHDR sucks in every case, either RenoDX or RTX HDR.

Don't know what version you're on, might need to update, the all-in-one pack is better than adding all the extra APIs yourself.

Make a copy of your game folder and just extract the zip file from github over it, you can always go back quickly if needed then.

This is awesome, native settings with HDR brightness maxed out for me seems to work best since increasing contrast crushes and deep fried everything, given na Pali is overcast it is probably how the game is supposed to look accurately anyway on the map versus this
>>
>>109838035
Very nice, you can try lighting mode OneXBlending too instead of normal, I remember it looked a little better for me.
IIRC some setting did want a game restart too even though they didn't say it.

Yeah in spectator cam mode when you fly over the light between the wooden beams towards the skybox, it also had grayish overcast lighting, I didn't try some other maps before. Probably would look really nice in OG Unreal in outside maps.

Welcome, have fun.
It's nice it's so easy to implement APIs into UT'99. I mean lots of games had 3rd party renderer options even ones not though about by the developer originally because there were so many standards, but it's easy to forget. Much nicer than with some later games where you have to use external wrappers.

Very interesting difference is that I'm not really noticing any of the crushing or deep frying so far, I'll have to try more games but the na Pali maps look pretty much like I'd expect them to texture wise despite them being soft along with the lighting

Depends what versions of the games you use too, I know Valve used to bake in DXVK for Vulkan into their updates for games like Portal 2, which works better with HDR and stuff than DX9. But you can use DXVK with pretty much any DirectX game manually too. There's like a period of games in general where things like DXVK work much better than their original DX9 renderer on modern GPUs, including for things like RTX HDR, I use it for a few games, like OG Crysis (not the remaster) or Borderlands 1/2, but DXVK might require some configuration (done via a file you can create next to the .dll) to get proper HDR, etc.
>>
>>109838133
Swapping out like outright replacing? No, not if your current SSD works. You will see effectively 0 difference in day to day use, if you want to buy another SSD then you should just use both for extra storage space.

now that the image dims too much or has too low brightness yeah, tvmaxxing solves that

remember the larger tv you get the larger the physical area of the highlights also become

that is, a 2% window on a 77" tv is larger than on a 55" tv

Imagine if you had like high contrast ratio display technology back in 1960's
The idea of proposing "sdr" would seem insane wouldnt it.
What advantage does limiting the brightnes and color range have to the viewing experience. Youd capture 4k nit outdoors footage and remove 95% of the color data for what.

No it isn't, HDR implementations are just overwhelmingly shot along with bad monitor calibration and tone mapping and dimming algorithms out of the box
