This is how I like to organise my ports: an arbitrary start at 6000, each project gets assigned a multiple of 10, and if that project has multiple containers that I need to access then they get multiples of 1. it doesn't matter at all but it looks nice when I look at them like this

I've been thinking about adding tailscale sidecars to all of my projects, but I don't like the idea of being unable to access my stuff if there's an issue with the VPN or something

this might be more of a /sqt/ vs hsg but is it genuinely idiotic to take 1ru rack mount stuff (motherboard etc) and slot it into a tower chassis?
I already have an overkill older tower server but have essentially been given a 2-3 generation newer equipped 1ru servers (essentially top of the line/maxed out R640 with enough extra ram to populate all the dim slots with 32GB sticks) that is a pretty big upgrade but it is LOUD as all fuck.

id presumably get a cheap EATX if i can get some full tower heatsinks and figure out airflow over the ram etc, bare metal T640s would maybe make more sense but the issue is a lot are missing the heatsinks anyway.

you guys told me to get an HBA SAS and recommended the 9300-16i and I did and I line every bit of it and it's been good to be for an entire year. i ate the power consumption and it getting really hot bit, because I had cooling options and the power draw wasn't an issue at the time. then I mentioned, last week, needing to do a new build just for a jellyfin and qbittorrent downloading and seeding server that has a very low power draw and I intimated to you fellas that I'm getting a b660m d4 mobo with a 12500T; that I already had ddr4 ram. you guys gave me the okay and told me to get the 9305-16i which I got and I'm keeping, but the other shit, like the mobo and the CPU has been nothing but fucking hell! i repurposed my Arctic CPU cooler, the ram and the CPU and the shit killed THREE of my SAS drives one night, the RAM wouldn't work in dual channel only b1 and b2 slot and...and...it's just been fucking hell!!! and I blame you guys. i need for help

You can make your own custom mount for the motherboard. Drill some plexiglass, add some motherboard spacers and you're done. Then mount that plexiglass in your tower case.
However proprietary connections would be a pain. Usually those 1U racks have the PSU that just slot in without cables so that's going to be more difficult to work with.

Why can't you connect a mini PC <-> NAS? What's stopping you from setting up Jellyfin and have the files hosted over your NAS? You already mentioned that you're building a machine JUST for Jellyfin and a seedbox so I assume you already have a NAS.

thanks for the suggestion! i appreciate you looking out, but I'm about power efficiency and reducing electricity consumption footprint. the main reason i can't go the mini pc + nas route is my existing drives. i'm building this machine around 6 sas drives and a 9305-16i hba card that i already have, because it is what I was recommended to get a year ago, i can't use a standard consumer nas or plug them into a mini pc. this custom build is actually going to be my all-in-one nas and seedbox combined. I'll be streaming to my ugoos am6b+ which handles all the media decoding and playback natively, this server will just sit at pure idle most of the time. i just need something that'll do everything I'm about with the least amount of power draw

Should I be worried about fragmented files?
How do different NAS OS' handle it?
I know OMV + mergerfs + SnapRAID doesn't do anything about them. Since I delete files should I be worried about it? How does unRAID or TrueNAS do it? Or do you guys just rawdog it?
The files I have are mostly write once and read many. But there are often some big files I have to delete because there's a newer version instead.

How slow is LSI-9200? I can get one for half the price of a 9300/9305. I'm not doing and sequential read or writes and mostly only has one active disk at a time. Or should I just get a 9305?

HP ML350 Gen10 anon here, for some reason my GTX 3080s are stuck running PCIe Gen 1.0 instead of 3.0 like they should be capable of. Any ideas why this might be happening? I've made sure they're set to "auto" (which should put them at max speed) in the BIOS, and the BIOS has been updated recently.

It's running Ubuntu Server 26.04 if that matters.

I don't think defragging has really been much of a thing on Linux for ages? You can defrag your drives if you want to, but the common wisdom seems to just be "don't worry about it". Especially if you just store media on the drives and use an SSD for system/application files.

Personally, I'm just rawdogging it. I also have an SSD cache in front of my drives, so the HDDs are mainly getting files added in bulk, and all of the fast changes happen on the SSDs.

do anons vibecode anything useful for their servers? I vibe coded the equivalent of disk locator for TrueNAS. The UI shows exactly what each disk in the bay is, what pool it's apart of and so on. Makes it really easy to swap out failing drives. Yeah, it doesn't exactly look pretty but its very informative
