Replacing RAM and storage is a little harder with the ultrabook style, since you have to take the whole back cover off, but repasting and cleaning the fans is much easier. The back cover screws are captive in all P16 gens.

>>109905281
Shameless. The 8 GB is soldered with no slot to upgrade it. Look for a T495 non-s or one with at least 16 soldered.

T480 bros... it's friday and i'm watching porn and playing old classics like Doom 2 on my laptop
>>
Got a refurbished T480 about two weeks ago, but after a day of use it started having trouble charging. at first when it booted it showed the classic message saying that the AC adapter had a low wattage, but when plugged to the laptop it would charge for a moment, lighting up the LED before stopping as if unplugged, then it would reconnect again and so on. I thought it was the thunderbolt firmware but it seemed to be updated to its latest version and I already tried flashing it manually onto the chip using the CH341A. the batteries have already lost all the charge and now when I plug the adapter the LED doesn't even blink like before (on both USB C ports), it doesn't charge anymore. What should I do? what could it be? It was charging perfectly the first day I got it.
>>
>>109910419
I hope it's not doing that bullshit where the USB-C ports die because the controller shipped retarded, it's one of the things that makes me glad I have an old ass T470 with the square lenovo DC in thing because it was durable as shit, USB-C port even if it's not fried is much much more easily broken than the old square Lenovo plug mounted to the laptop chassis and I wish T480 kept it.

Also, the AC adapter could've straight up died, I've had that happen on a Toshiba laptop and replacing it worked.
>>
>>109910482
> USB C port
Yeah, I love T480 but good fuck, type C charging port has to be by far the worst design decision they could have made for the modern models.

>Also, the AC adapter could've straight up died, I've had that happen on a Toshiba laptop and replacing it worked.
Yeah, I thought it could also be that, I will see if I find a new adapter or maybe a phone charger with enough wattage to test. Praying to god its just that, otherwise I'll have to get a new mobo.

I don't mind them, I've had my T470 bottom on and off so many times and it still snaps on nicely, What I do wanna see return on the Lelnovo laptops is pic rel, it wasn't as slick as Apple magsafe, but what Lenovo did do is make a power connector you could drop the fucking laptop on and and not break, as well as a laptop that could fall on the ground and not get fucking one shotted like a Mac, usb cannot be trusted to handle the abuse a Thinkpad might see.
>>
>>109914489
>usb cannot be trusted to handle the abuse a Thinkpad might see
I looked it up because you're right, USB C isn't very robust, and you can apparently swap out USB C charging ports on the framework.
>>
>>109914577
I do like the modular ports on the frameworks despite them not having been around very long, I like my Lelnovos but you bang a USB-C port and break it it's fucking done, you're doing a board repair or just swapping a system board which shouldn't even be something we're discussing, and it's bad enough the USB-C standard is what it is and not very durable, but it cannot be the only way to get power into a business laptop that is supposed to be durable and handle "the bumps and bruises of everyday life"

>now when I plug the adapter the LED doesn't even blink like before (on both USB C ports)
I can't be bothered to check, but I read in passing that there was a recent wave of thinkpads dying due to failure of some component relevant to its charging circuitry. Might be an issue with the mosfets not being adequately cooled. IIRC, mosfets dying were a problem too, with that one Chinaman's drop-in motherboard, the one that got disappeared or something.

Only way to avoid this would have been to use thermal pads to cover the components not adequately cooled.

Normalfags' T480s are about to start failing en masse LOL!
>>
>>109918483
>Normalfags' T480s are about to start failing en masse
Kek they might, and it's not even a thinkpad thing, but this just shit that happens when you have an old laptop, and why I tell people to not pay a shit ton of money for these things, I don't like it when normies are told by autistic people in YouTube shorts that the T480 is just the greatest thing, because normies are not technicians who can deal with crap that pops up, guys like us don't give a crap about our beat up worthless schizopad, I literally run a T470 with the batteries gutted out that bitches about what time it is when you unplug it, but I don't care, it was $75 for a sexy NVMe ultrabook with a 1080p screen and I'm not expecting a brand new laptop experience, but with the money people are forking out for a T480 these days, they will be underwhelmed by this old ass laptop that may not work perfectly due to age when the port(s) break or whatever else.
>>
>>109917574

It's called Googlebook OS and it's pretty much Android running on a Core Ultra processor with 16GB of RAM so it can handle Gemini.

I just hope you can get around it and put Linux on it if you come in contact with one of these fuckers, and you should never pay money for one of these fuckers.
>>

>if you come in contact with one of these fuckers, and you should never pay money for one of these fuckers.
Don't worry, I just spent 800+ leafbucks on a new laptop that I don't even really need, I don't think I'll be coming near one of them any time soon and I certainly won't be spending money on them
>>
>>109919500
Based, it's a real shame too they're even wasting a nice little ultrabook on a fucking Android-based thing which limits it's functionality in an age where people pretty much live out of their Galaxy phones, My Galaxy S26 has 12GB of ram, what the fuck do people need a 16GB of RAM ultrabook with Android for? Just sell a dock that plugs into the USB-C on the phone and blows everything up on a monitor with an attached keyboard and mouse.

Man, thank fuck for the German wiki. Recently got an X301 to use as a dedicated CD rippling/vinyl recording/legacy windows machine and for the life of me I couldn't find drivers for it. Lenovo's current support site doesn't recognize the serial number or have it as an option to download drivers for, and the English wiki page wasn't helpful either. German page thankfully has a link to the driver matrix, which is still hosted on Lenovo's site but none of their current webpages point to it.

Thoughts on the X280? I want a small reliable laptop and this was the last one that uses a 12.5in screen.
>>
>>109921356
It's based as shit, but don't overpay for it just because it's the last of its kind, for some reason 8th gen laptops go for silly money compared to 7th gen and even newer than 8th gen Thinkpads.
>>
>>109921382
16GB RAM models go for $250-300 which is probably overpriced. I may consider going up to the X390 though it's 13.3in, so idk.
>>
>>109921402
Yeah a 13.3 inch is probably your future when it comes to reasonably priced smol laptops, but I think that's a nice screen size, I consider the 14 inch T series little guys with a lot of resolution

>>
>>109922155
>>109922190
The novelty of the x280 goes out the window when you look at 13.3in since the market is flooded with 13.3in laptops. You might as well look at something else entirely.
>>
>>109922286

I have a thinkpad e15. What's bad about it?
>>
>>109923146
It's gen 2. It's solid. I recommend it if you find it for a decent price.
>>
>>109921356
It's nice and libre/coreboot compatible. Soldered RAM isn't much of an issue since you should always buy a system that already has what you need, as well as the fact that it's rather inadvisable to make any upgrades at the moment. If you really needed more than 16GB, chances are you'd be better off doing whatever workload requires that on a desktop instead.

Be mindful of issues with the TB controller firmware, and thermals. Go for a FHD display.

>>109921382
>for some reason 8th gen laptops go for silly money compared to 7th gen and even newer than 8th gen Thinkpads
Unsoldered RAM (soldered RAM is only an issue if you have 8GB), Windows 11 compatibility, and libre/coreboot compatibility. I'm not sure which of those three is most consequential. Windows 11 compatibility only affects normalfags, and libreboot compatibility only affects performative fags.

I am planning on upgrading my W520 very soon as it's gradually falling apart and it's at a point where I'm better off either getting a new W520 or a new computer entirely.

What is a newer Thinkpad like it in terms of durability and at least having socketable ram and CPU performance that won't shit the bed when playing a 1080p video like many late 2010s T or Xs?
>>
>>109925829
The last socketed CPU was during the T440P haswell era Anon, they're really old, and I wouldn't go out of my way to use an old socketed CPU, just to get smoked the T460P/T470P (laptops you should look into because 14nm quad core beast), it's to the point where my old ass i5-7300U gives the 2720QM sandy quads a run for their money it's 10% slower on benchmarks then an old W520 but we're talking 12.48w of power used when I'm maxing it out compared to a 45w TDP CPU, that's pretty insane efficiency compared to 32nm.

Just get a T460P/T470P/T480 (reasonably priced) or newer Anon, you're gonna be getting such good performance you wouldn't even be thinking about upgrading the CPU because it's destroying what you have now.
>>
>>109925923
To clarify, I meant socketable RAM. CPUs have indeed long since not been socketable and it's been a good five or so years since U class cpus started outperforming older M cpus. I just want a CPU that isn't a radiator but doesn't throttle to hell like the x260 I had did.

I actually had a t460 for a few years during college and I found the CPU to be a bit lacking even though it didn't throttle a lot. I heard literally right after those models did the CPUs start to actually not be shit. So I think that I'll be looking at something newer than the t460. Do you have any experience with P series or is that too expensive to really be worth considering?
>>
>>109925983
Ah yes, T460/T460P/T470/T470P/T480 were all socketed RAM with both of them for matching dual channel, get something nice but do not overpay just because of the RAM slots like a lot of people are doing.
>>
>>109925983
I've never had a "P" model but my T470 does what I need, if it was my main machine it would be ideal to have a quad core but you can get by on the 15w Ultrabook CPU.

The "dual core" meme comes from the fact a T470/T570 will typically perform 40% worse overall than the T480/T580 with the quad core 8th gen CPUs (when they are being fully leveraged), the problem is that the 8th gen laptops are overpriced as shit compared to the dual core kaby lake laptops as well as newer than the 8th gen laptops, I personally think it's a bummer how low the performance uplift is on the T480/T580 considering it's a doubling of cores and you're not even getting double the performance due to the same 14nm technology operating in a 15W thermal envelope, that's why I tell people to not overpay for them and skip over T480 and get something newer unless the price is right.

Framework consumers pay big bucks to buy new in the hopes of being able to swap parts out one day when the CPU and RAM get old. Thinkpad buyers stalk ebay and local marketplaces to find a cheap but high spec 5-10 year old business surplus machine, then haggle to get a better deal and put in some old RAM and SSDs from their last machine. Similar desires but for vastly different reasons and goals.

Also, only four ports ever on a Framework? Lame and gay, the worst Thinkpads worth looking at have at least 3 USB ports (mix of USB-A and USB-C) not including other ports like HDMI and micro SD.

Years of Apple conditioning the industry to have fewer and fewer ports, and most normalfags not actually needing them. Bluetooth is so omnipresent and the airpods + clones sold so well that people no longer need to sacrifice a USB-A slot for a mouse and many don't care about 3.5mm jacks. Printers becoming wireless and a lot of paperwork going digital means that's one less reason to care about USB. Omnipresent wifi and proliferation of wireless displays means less emphasis on cables to connect a laptop for a presentation. Applel spearheading the rise of USB-C docks means that connectivity is offloaded from the machine to another brick that either stays on the desk or can get packed in the bag next to the charger.

Framework is meant for people with Macbook money, not so much the Thinkpad thrifter crowd. Four slots (realistically 1's always going to be USB-C to at least charge the thing, so pick what 3 you want) sounds appalling but it's about on par with Apple laptops. The real hope for repairability is other companies copying the design philosophy of Lenovo's new T14, and the incentive's there thanks to the EU passing more edicts to make computers more serviceable (it's part of why the Macbook Neo's so easily to mess with). I have more hope in the big enterprise companies to modify their design ethos than I do in Framework scaling up and claiming any significant fraction of market share.
>>
>>109933142
don't forget framework design attempts to mimic macbook levels of sleek. think macbook air
even more so than thinkpads

these people sell upgrades to a chassis that is constrained leading to a faster rate of obsolescence which necessitates a need to upgrade sooner

and the best part is the fanboys take this feature as a moral win over apple

Get 830 G8, best value for money here by a long mile. Best CPU, best speaker, best build quality (yes even against the T480), dual sodimm slots. The downsides are subpar keyboard, cooling and 45% NTSC IPS panel. but should be decent for office. Avoid 5420 like a plague, dare I say build quality wise it's comparable to E series thinkpad. Nothing like its predecessors the Latitude 5400 and older

Are thinkpads even good deals nowadays? I can find a similarly spec'd precision for ~2/3rds of the price that a thinkpad costs on the used market. Are they actually that much better? Was it always like this or is this a result of the memes becoming too popular, thereby increasing demand for them?
>>
>>109941160
I'd say that's a bit expensive, also with only 16 gb ram it's not going to last you a long while, and it's non-upgradable iirc
I bought one with better specs for less than $600
>>

as long as you buy the ones companies are getting rid off, which are the T14 gen 2 and 3 right now
newer are too expensive because they're not abundant like the older ones, and the T480 and similar are a bit overpriced honestly because of hype and shilling. T14 gen 2 and 3 give the most bang for your bucks, though the AMD gen 3 only has soldered ram
at least my impression is that they're still affordable

I don't see the point, just turn the thing off when you're not using it, not only that you could leave the thing running and let the screen go to sleep and it would barely use any energy, Intel CPUs go into such low power states and have since haswell that it's insane how little more power it uses than being completely off, all while being able to immediately be used, I've got an old ass T470 and that thing when left with the screen off, nothing going on will shut off the CPU fan, go into its low power state and the bottom of the laptop will start to become cool because of how the CPU is literally using 0.6w of power or even less because 0.6w was the haswell spec and I've got 14nm Kaby.

I asked about it here when I saw offer and was told to go for it. It has 32GB of ram and 512GB SSD, I'm happy with it so far. 32GB isn't as much of an improvement as expected it to be though, my last laptop was an old machine with a regular hard drive and 4GB of ram, things take significantly longer to load at first but I don't see much of a difference for once things have been fully loaded. I'm accustomed to the patience needed for my old machine so it's probably harder to feel the difference for me though. One thing I noticed having two config so far apart in terms of specs next to each other is that a lot of delay is actually baked into websites. For example I always have a slight yet noticeable delay when changing a video's quality on youtube and always thought that it was due to my old config being old (I have 500Mbps ethernet so I ruled that possibility out) but turns out I have the exact same delay with 32GB of ram and an SSD.
>>
>>109945042
Yeah internet is so laggy and bloated on my 500mbps connection as well, that there's basically no difference in web browsing between my i7-8700 with 32GB of RAM, and my energy sipping T470 with less than 1/3 the CPU power and 32GB of RAM, bloat is a serious problem because it used to be that you could buy your way out of laggyness with more hardware, but things are so vibecoded and shitty, even beast computers hooked up to half a gig ethernet or better are lagging.
>>
>ryzen
why
>>
>>109945086
Because some people like to have good quality hardware that doesn't self-immolate, brick your laptop, or corrupt your memory while also saving a lot of money and getting better performance out of it despite a lower tdp.

Because virtualization and chrome is bloated, it sounds retarded to do on a dual core but my T470 edits 1080p60 clips in Vegas Pro on Virtualbox with Chrome tabs open, its very easy to be using 12GB of RAM or more, thats why I spent as little as possible for the T470 at $85 for a 1080p ips one, and then slammed 32GB in it for an extra $100, you end up with a laptop that's cheaper than a T480 that would be overpriced and come with 8GB or a budget laptop from the store with a horrible screen and maybe 8GB of RAM, the T470 with 32GB of RAM is weak on the processor but extremely usable because it won't slow down compared to an 8GB 16GB laptop when you load more stuff into memory than they have.

>>
>>109950281
>spending money on tech at all right now is being irresponsible with your money
Depends on the platform and its price to performance.

For the most part, yes, but there's still the worthwhile deal here and there. I'd rather stubbornly wait months at a time waiting for a sanely priced listing than encourage scalpers. Unfortunately, the majority of buyers do not share this sentiment.

>but on the other hand the situation probably won't ever improve either
You're absolutely right! That's why it's a gamble on my part. Even if prices do come down (whenever that'll be...), they won't return back to what they were before the end of last year. That's a given.

The ideal scenario would've been for flash chip manufacturers to compensate by building more fabs, and shortly after having the entire AI industry collapse under its weight of false promises, exacerbated by Altman defaulting on his mass purchase. Unfortunately, they've been burned one to many times in the past, and if the AI industry were to collapse, it'd bring the entire economy down with it.

I had a t480 in the past and it was chink plastic of the worst kind. It's why I'm asking, I was assuming it was some kind of generational thing, like older t480's might have actual metal or something? I touched the touchpad with a moist finger once (not wet, just moist) and the touchpad just went. I opened it to fix it, but the chink plastic fissured.
Some time previously I had a shitty full-abs dell inspiron. That was maybe in 2005 or earlier. Despite being plastic, it never broke the way this thinkpad did, and I bet I could have dumped a glass of water on it no problem.
Otherwise I had a dell latitude with a real full-metal cage that was really nice in terms of build quality. Only flaw was the hard drive would cause the whole cage to vibrate. Otherwise decent temperature distribution, no fan noise issue, decent price, great specs except shitty screen.
Given chinkpads' reputation compared to my only experience with them, I had assumed I must have received a dud, as in maybe there are secret good batches to watch out for?
>>
>>109962078
I can't speak for T480 but the multiple T470 ive come across have been amazing, my main beater one with the non HD screen works amazing despite having been roughoused previously, I actually like the T470 because it had the old school Lenovo box power plug that's not soldered to the board like the T480's usb-c power connector that you absolutely cannot drop the laptop onto like the old days or it will be fucked, so unfortunately the T480 did give up some duruability at least when it came to being USB C charging only, the T470 can be charged via the usb c thunderbolt port, but should that break you always have the trusty square connector.

It also wouldnt surprise me if someone previously spilled shit into your track pad previously, the water drain channels in a ThinkPad are made to save the motherboard from death, not the track pad, I remember Louis Rossmann dumped a bunch of shit into his P50 and his track pad buttons and fingerprint thing died, but the laptop did stay working as a laptop and that's where the durability is, you can kiss an apple laptop goodbye if water gets on it or it drops.
>>
>>109962108
I've done some quick reading and found that it's definitely possible that there are batch differences. First, there's a t480 25th edition, which is said to have at least a different finish if not different material. Still seems plastic, though.
Second, I read that some t480 actually use magnesium instead of plastic, though most use plastic. People note that the magnesium ones are better built including with in-bored screw holes which break far more rarely. It is not yet clear to me how to find the right one.
I thought t480 was just "a better t470" but from what you're saying it might be worth investigating this kind of question with t470's as well.
>>
>>109962126
Yeah the 25th anniversary was a T470 based laptop, it was really silly at the time becsuse its a $1900 "collector edition" of an ultrabook whise base configuration in late 2017 could be had for $685 on sale, but in 2026, I dont think a nicely configured T470 with a 1080p IPS screen is something to discount if you can get it for like $100 dollars or less, people often get into thinkpads and think its either T480 or nothing, or theyll be on a budget and spent more than a T470 costs upgrading a T440P with stupid shit like 1080 ips screen and cpu, when they could just got the non memed T470 with the ips screen already in it and it not be overpriced due to memes.

Are all thin modern laptops like this? My L13 is so flexible and bends so easily it doesn't feel like a thinkpad. It's hard to imagine the consumer laptops are worse. Is X13 is huge improvement and turns into a tank like the x230, or not really?
>>
>>109962164
Yeah, they're virtually all like this. Personally I'm very interested in the panasonic let's note and the vaio laptops for these reasons, they seem to be some of the last laptops with any reasonable build qualities, but I can't get them easily over here. Will have to look into imports, even then options are sparse.
>>
>>109962164
Chinkpad X, T, P and whatever else expensive series are the ones you want anon, Lenovo found out they could dress ideapads as chinkpads becsuse people like the lookout want a track point but its not the same, just becsuse a laptop is thin does not mean it can't be solid as a piece of wood.

L13 is shit, get X13 instead. X13 is basically T14s in 13 inch form. Dare I say X13 feels slightly more premium than regular T14.

Of course it won't be as rigid as X230, still a worthy improvement from L13

370 eurobucks. I have a 16gb stick and 1TB ssd laying on my thrash heap I can insert.

The second hand chinkpad market in my country is fucked, is the above still viable or should I cave in and get an Elitebook with slightly higher specs for 50 to 100 eurobucks more? I won't be able to larp with the red nipple.

Makes sense why my mom's work T480s felt so much sturdier than my T470 despite it being gimped with 8GB of soldered ram, the solid as a rock magnesium feeling is the only thing I miss about my latitude E6400 despite the slowness, the thing was a brick, the carbon fiber infused plastic of a T470 will get sorta deformed of even crack off when the laptop gets dropped and smashed into stuff, its still durable as shit and the laptop is light and sexy but my god is mag alloy nice compared to the reinforced fiberglass snap on cover of a T470, its very common to see chunks missing if its a beat the fuck up unit meanwhile ive never see a mag alloy laptop get a dent.

T460s through T480s have a really nice build. Magnesium bottom and middle, CFRP lid. Feels almost like X220/X230. T480s is the best of these having two SSD slots, one large battery instead of two small ones, and easy-to-source replacement keyboards and touchpads.

Sadly all of the later Ts models remove the central sheet of magnesium and make the keyboard a structural element (and do away with the RAM slot too).

Is t14s that much of an upgrade compared to regular? And is gen 3-4 that much of a jump? I’d be thankful for advice anons

All the holes on the bottom (besides the drainage holes) are air intake/air flow. The main ones are under the actual fan though.

Swapped the main board on my e15 gen 1, went from the cheapo i5 with integrated graphics to the i7 510u with Radeon rx 640, popped in 32gb of ram too since I had it sitting around. Aside from forgetting to make the u1 usb I had zero issues. The board cost me 60 bucks so I’d say this was a great deal, and the setup is surprisingly snappy considering the 640 isn’t exactly top of the line, a lot of games run pretty well on it. Overall I feel like my money was well spent.

/tpg/ how bad are the OLEDs in something like P15 G1/G2? Is the PWM flicker really bad?
>>
>>109971396
It's depressing, the P15 Gen 1 with OLED 4K usually come with a 8C cpu but all the IPS 4K ones I find have a 6C cpu :S

>inb4 who needs 4K on 15"

I want the 4K display for the better contrast, it's 1400:1 compared to the 700:1 of the base FHD model. The higher FHD model has 1200:1 but lets be honest it's probably all the bottom spec displays out there.

I'm a bit worried about going OLED. Burn-in is one thing, but I read a lot about the supposed pwm flicker...
>>
>>109971263
t14s has better chasis, magnesium just like your t450s. lacks ethernet and you won't be able to upgrade the ram. regular t14 is plastic (but feels ok). for daily driver t14s might be a better option afterall.
amds are rare af compared to intel in my easternyuropoor area.
basically you can get:
t14 g1 - $200-250
t14 g2 - $300
t14s g1 - $300
t14s g2 - $350+
11the gen intel is about 30% faster than 10th gen, igpu should be significantly faster.
tough call. would love to have t14s chasis, but 16G ram would piss me off.

Bro who cares about burn-in.

Older OLEDs suck because their PWM frequency is low (240Hz).
The newer OLEDs on ThinkPads(new as in just last year) have PWM frequencies around 1,200Hz.
At 1,200Hz, it's much easier on the eyes.

I've found the OLED panels on ThinkPads to suck dick as they're very grainy on gray backgrounds and have ugly green tints on all the ones I've used.

Why bother with a thinkpad? Macs are practically the same price and their CPU blows anything else out the water, even destroying high-end desktop CPUs. Typically come with more, higher-quality ram than thinkpads can muster, much better screens, and npu is a bonus. Better battery life, too, and the build quality trounces any thinkpad.

x86 has way more use to me than arm even though I wouldn't mind playing with it. so samsung is meh.
t14s only selling point to me is magnesium chasis, but 16GB is not much these days considering memory leaks in browsers and virtualization.
so the t14 with ryzen wins. iris xe gpu is somehow slightly faster, but ryzen has more cpu power... thunderbolt might be interesting to some, but I like old school docking stations like 40aj that will work with it.
upgradable ram wins in the end imho.

>>109943776
>doesn't that make more sense tho? u never say "dollars 300" it always "300 dollars" :\
No, it's one of those proper rules of English. For example, you don't type the digits of the numbers zero through nine when writing. On a document for numerical reasons (like page numbers, or maths) you can use 0-9. Otherwise you type out the words if they're less than 10.
>>109949622
The cent sign should also not be used in written English, you would express everything less than $1 as nine cents, or 55 cents. The sign is only used on currency, or in a ledger referencing currency.

p.s. the original 'dollar sign' has it's own history

Funny you mention the T570, I have the T470 and the CPU performance increased by 9.4% on Geekkbench just by having another so-dimm in it for dual channel even on an old ass laptop, dual channel is a big deal because of how in inherently bottlenecked by RAM computers are.

The 3x more cache on a 7800X3D would make is perform considerably better than the 7600X because there's more to CPUs than MHz, it's only a contributing thing.

Looking for some help for a fan controller on the Thinkpad P15 Gen2. All I could find online was to change the power settings rather than the fan itself and a few sketchy fan patches that did not really cover my model specifically. is there a recommended fan controller that would work well with P series laptops?
>>
>>109991920
My only concern with supergluing it is the risk of the glue going down into the thread and into the motherboard, and then having to deal with a motherboard that's stuck to the chassis. Idk how effective IPA would be in unsticking it.

If I were to drill the head shmoove off, Idk if there are any other components that would be stuck in place due to the thread that remains inside the chassis. I'll have to look at the manual.

Are the amd t14 gen 1 and 2 different enough to matter. Only difference I can see is 4650 vs 5650 but the price difference between the two is often $100-$150 more. Doesn't seem worth the extra $100 for a processor that's marginally better.

I found a Refurbished (Excellent) ThinkPad T14 Gen 3, AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U, 16GB DDR5 RAM, 256GB SSD selling for $420
Or I could take a T14 Gen 2 with a ryzen 5 pro 5650u, 16gbs of ddr4, 256gbs for $350

fuck that sucks that the gen 3 has soldered ram. Would you rather have soldered. 16gbs ddr5 or 16gbs ddr4 with the potential to get 32gbs in future?

The meme about KBL-R i5 being better than i7 is just a meme. At the very worst they perform the same, and the i7 is better in 14" and bigger laptops as soon as you repaste.

Gen 3 is a downgrade in every aspect except the taller screen and newer CPUs. Worse keyboard, worse ports, more flex, soldered wifi and RAM in the AMD versions. If you're coming directly from a pre-2017 thonkpad the keyboard will be deeply disappointing.

Gen 2 all the way. You can upgrade it to 32 GB for the price difference.

I mistakenly installed it first and didn't even notice until I saw message in Windows Update about being able to update to 11.
It was because I had windows 10 IoT LTSC ISO right on c:\ and windows 11 IoT LTSC ISO on c:\office, huge confusion.
I got used to 11 IoT LTSC already so no harm in upgrading.
Also they have 8 separate 2 GB banks, quite interesting.

I just got a T14 G3 coming straight from a 7row modded X230 and I actually don't mind the keyboard, it has a nice tactile feel to it still and the layout is not ideal but quite functional regardless. The only thing that really bothers me about it is the increased spacing between the trackpoint and its buttons, it's just not as comfortable to use, especially with no soft rim trackpoint available. Pretty happy with it otherwise, I expected much worse from modern Lelnovo.

Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3, i7-1280P, 48 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD for ~$400. Good deal or avoid non-AMD?

It's a beast Anon, you're not gonna struggle with 48GB of RAM and a 1TB drive for $400.

I find myself accidentally pressing keys just resting my hands on the keyboard, especially G/H/B when using the trackpoint, and the trackpoint itself has drift and bias on a level I haven't seen with older ones. The cramped keys next to Enter (ISO layout) are annoying too.
