It's actually funny how this 45W portable meltdown just gets shit done. Almost without fail it beats the budget garbage almost everyone in my class runs, even if it uses an order of magnitude more power. Feels snappier and never struggles with enterprise-ware (ever used Cisco packet tracer?).
Also having actual ports just makes this laptop invaluable for half the hardware projects we do.

Some dude in the previous thread told me if you're buying a thinkpad nowadays the best price to performance is the t14 gen 2 usually, avoid any earlier models if possible.

p14s seems to be the best overall option, rather than the t14/t14s. And definitely no t560 unless you're looking to dumpster dive.

>>109998030
Yeah, I can't really see any reason now to get anything from after the --30s and before the first generation of the new naming schemes. Maybe an X395 if you can get a good one for cheaper than an X13. Otherwise you're spending money on laptops that are neither fun to fuck around with and mod extensively like the 30s and earlier nor remotely good by current hardware standards.
>>
whats the difference beteeen the T/E/L/P versions of the thinkpad. Have the option beteeen a newer L14 for $300 (ryzen 7k) and an older T14 with the ryzen 4k for $200. Also see a few e-series ones in a similar range.

Do I buy these or not?

T470 + T470s bundle for $110, so $55 each. Both are tested and working. The 3rd one is a T460s, but it doesn't turn on, so I'm not counting it toward the price. The $110 is for all 3.

T470: i5-7200U
T470s: i7-7600U

They don't have RAM or SSDs though

I'm basically building a ThinkPad stockpile for the AI wasteland era. Future laptops will probably have AI hardware or some other shit that won't let you do or watch anything without an internet connection and paying a subscription.
>>
>>110002360
>I'm basically building a ThinkPad stockpile for the AI wasteland era
Literally me, I thought I was crazy for hoarding AMD FX DDR3 shit new in box, Coffee Lake DDR4 shit new in box years ago, never would I think that DDR4 or even some high end DDR3 rigs are becoming relevant again because it's all people can afford, not to mention my collection of T470, those things should've been made irrelevant years ago with progression of technology, but because people can't get RAM and laptops are pathetic, a T470 or T480 with 32GB of RAM shoved in there is literally better from a laptop from the store, it's insane. While I'm not sure hardware itself would become locked down by AI, the people who did hoard a bunch of stuff will at least have computers to use should hardware just become prohibitively expensive.

Can the screen in a t480s be swapped into a t480? Or would it be better to use the t480s over the t480? I have both and the palmrest in the t480 feels nicer than the one in the t480s but it doesnt have a 1080p screen while the t480s does
>>

Hell yeah anon, the 1080p screens are the same panel and connector, go and give your T480 the good screen it deserves.
>>
>>110002960
I'd just buy a better panel off aliexpress for the T480 personally (which is exactly what I did) but yeah they can be swapped
>>
I recently purchased an customer returned HP with an *advertised* battery capacity, both in hours and Wh. What's the best way/software to test the capacity so that I don't get fucked over?

Is there anything else I should remember to check? Display is blemishless, it doesn't have a dead smell either
>>
>>110003510
Or if it's the wrong general because the laptop is too cheap, where should I ask around instead?
>>
>>110003510
To check for battery fishiness I boot a Loonix live image and let it discharge from a full battery, screen on with some light workload running, while it logs battery data from sysfs (/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0) every minute or so to the internal disk or another USB stick. If the percentage doesn't jump and it doesn't shut off early then it's fine.

>because the laptop is too cheap
Kek a laptop can never be too cheap for /tpg, our goal is fucking free if we could.
>>
>>110003370
Any recommendations where to look on aliex for the panel?
>>
>>110003977
I bought mine from there: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005004607643355.html
but it seems it's not available anymore. you can see if you find other sellers that sell the same panel, just contact them first to make sure they are sending the actual panel and not an equivalent. you'll need to get a pair of brackets like those too: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005007102433351.html
the panel itself is great, 1500:1 contrast, 400 nits, low power. I have it in both my T480 and A485
>>
>>110004086
>400 nits

>>
Is a a485 for daily drawing, web surfing, and retro gaming still viable?
>>
>>110004116
yeah, was the same with the original panels on my Thinkpads, I just wanted nicer ones. not sure if that applies to the T470 as well (I assume it does) but the default panel on the T480 only displays 6-bit color (262k colors total) instead of the 16.2M colors on a normal 8-bit display. it's very noticeable
>>
>>110004129
yeah, should be. the CPU is slightly weaker than that of the T480 but the integrated GPU is a lot better. battery life is about the same, maybe very slightly lower

>>109998518
How true is this and would it fit into the op post? Also how do s models usually fit into the build quality rating
>>
>>110009098
It's pretty true, I have the most beat to fuck T470 and it still works and feels absolutely beautiful when you handle it and type, no flex even at 0.78'' thin, it's all the brick of an old T series, without the bulk, I wouldn't go any cheaper than a T series, even if I could get an E480 for the same money as a T470 I wouldn't do it because you're giving up so much in the way of build quality, and you will feel the cheapness every time you use it.

nothing. >>
>>110009098
Mostly true. Some T/P models don't live up to the name and some L/E models are built just as well as T/P (e.g. L440) but it's hard to go wrong buying a T/P. T4xxs/T14s are a little more rigid and premium-feeling than base T but lose a good amount of modularity (T480s and earlier: SATA bay and different battery sizes, T490s and later: Ethernet port and replaceable RAM and keyboard).
>>110009199
Agree. My E490 lasted less than two years before the first cracks in the case and my T470 is still doing fine.
>>
I hate the rubberized coating on my X13, shits so fucking hard to clean
Why can't we have METAL COMPUTERS or at least whatever they used back in the IBM days
>>
>>110010469
it was metalised rubber
>>
>>110010469
It's because they dent Anon, that's why rubberized coating on reinforced fiberglass, magnesium/carbon shit was chosen, because it is so resistant to being dropped and scratched, The Apple Macbook pro is beautiful compared to a Thinkpad when it is new, but after several years of being banged around, the Thinkpad will look like it is minor scratches and scuffs despite being thrown around as a work machine but otherwise in good condition, meanwhile if someone hasn't babied their Macbook Pro, it will become covered in dings when it is dropped, the corners can become bent if it lands on the corner, the anodized finish becomes fucking horrible when scrached, that's why the color black and rubberized material are so fantastic.

Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon or XFCE, but then updated to become 22.3 so that you stay on the stable 6.8 Ubuntu LTS, for some reason when I've tried the 22.3 ISO with the 6.14 kernel, software update will take you to the 7.0 Kernel, which breaks software like virtualbox in the software center and who knows whatever else, as well as straight up breaking the OS upon reboot on my T470, but when I installed the original 22 and then updated while staying on 6.8 Kernel, it never broke.

Got myself a nice P15 Gen 1, about time to retire my ZBook 15 G1, although it's gonna stay in reserve since I guess it's still in good working condition. But the lowest tier TN display was just atrocious, I couldn't hande it anymore. It had like 15 to 40 degrees viewing angle depending on direction.

I was considering slapping some cheap IPS on it but they're a bit of a gamble in terms of parameters (contrast, brightness, angles? Who cares, right?) and compatibility. Although I might still do that eventually since Good Old Haswell with 32Gigs is still a perfectly good web browsing machine.

Always wanted to try a ThinkPad though, since I've always been using HP's business laptops before. Although later gen ZBooks were also tempting.

I replaced optical disk drive with HDD. What can I do to prevent it from spinning up when booting or waking up from sleep? I only intend to use once in a while
>>
>>110029616
remove it when not in use
>>
>>110029616
have you tried changing your boot order and disabling waking
>>
>>110029683
It's internal SATA so not removable. The disk is inside drive bay enclosure
>>110029892
I don't think it's included in boot order. I think firmware simply starts up everything connected. Maybe corebooting would allow more tweaking?
>>
>>110029616
Try the boot order in BIOS settings; try putting the CD drive after your boot drive.

If that doesn't work, set up fstab (in Linux) so that it doesn't get mounted; write a script for mounting it.

Finally, if neither of those work, just unscrew the drive bay and pull it out like a based retard whenever you don't need it. Probably not hot-swappable though...

Coreboot doesn't just magically allow you to do whatever you want with your system lol.

>Thinkpad T14 Gen 2 arrives in 3 days
This is my first ever thinkpad, what's the first thing I'm supposed to do with it bros?
>>
>>110034087
Blow it out, whie it down with a little isoprobyl and put whatever you want on it, Anon.
>>
>>110034088
Okay thanks. Are the SSDs they come with any decent speed wise? I have a random spare gen 4 ssd but not sure if that would work in it.

Anon, I have a piece of shit from like 4 years before the Gen 2 and I'm getting like 1600 MB/s on the NVMe, so you're gonna be fine.

I've been stuck on this for a while, and this isn't even a step that's supposed to be challenging. Can't find the exact issue documented anywhere, and LLMs keep trying to send me on a goose chase. I also tried to finish this on another machine, but ran into entirely separate issues getting the dependencies to even install lmao. I guess I could try just scrapping everything and starting over? Maybe I bungled something along the way

Poast the commands ur using.

If ur using the right commands, then I assume you probably have the tar.xz in another directory. If you don't want to add the ./mk script to your PATH, then just use the absolute path to it (I assume it's in ur downloads, so it'd be ~/Downloads/*tar.xz

Gen 4 will work at gen 3 (x4) speeds ie ~3.2 GB/s.

How fast a drive it comes with is a lottery. Resellers are stuffing their laptops with anything they can get so it might be an ancient drive barely faster than SATA.

Here's a good video demonstrating the symptom. It's coil whine from the VRM.

Rechecked the libreboot docs:
>./mk inject libreboot-RELEASE_targetname.tar.xz
Expected to be run from inside the lbmk/ directory, with the tar.xz in there I suppose. I did try the full path, but that also did not work unfortunately. But oh man if that had been it. Smoove off etc. Also tried copying the tar to Downloads/ just to see and got the same error.
Anyway I scrapped the whole lbmk/ folder this morning, all of my downloaded files so far and just started over. Somehow it now Just Works!! I definitely did something wrong last night. Missed a command or mistyped something. Anyway thanks for your suggestions. pic unrelated it's a guy's 'bread' from /ck/
