Yeah, I thought about it more. Heavy lifting box (all SSD, holds the VM replications, meta data, etc. for the ceph fabric) will have a direct connection to the NAS for incremental backups. Sorting out the network, and where I want each box, now.

I understand the allure, I've used them in professional environments, and I've owned three personally for at home (all brand new). Granted, I bought the initial one because I did not have reliable power, and it wasn't that expensive at the time. All APC units, albiet smaller capacity for the home. My main question is basically how would the system react if I moved an HBA card from full bandwidth to say half bandwidth (different PCIe layout). CEPH shouldn't see the card, or PCIe fabric, just the 'object' or disk, but it will notice the drop in bandwidth. I assume there's a way to tell it not to make changes to how it manages space/replications/whatever it's doing?

I've heard CSB is the brand that APC UPS'es ship which (just white labeled), but i'm pretty sure they ship the barely cheaper black ones to make you buy batteries more frequently. Also by default their UPS'es do selftests every 2 weeks, which wears down the batteries faster, but you can disable those selftests easily from LCD.

lol, entirely depends on your circumstances, i grepped /var/log/apcupsd.events and i got 42 power failures this year alone, 2 of which were long enough to initiate graceful shutdown.
I don't care about HA, but they are a life-saver for power blips and graceful shutdown is very nice too, i still have nightmares of broken filesystems from power blips in the past (i hope in the age of journaling filesystems and copy-on-write it doesn't happen anymore, but software is complex, it wouldn't surprise me if something else would break then).

What's your backup solution like? Do you follow the 3 2 1 meme?

I looked into restic and borg but they were slow and had annoying limitations and the benefits of deduplication were not worth it for me. So I use rclone, some backends have no deletion, it's probably a mess right now but never even tried that hard to see if it works well beyond downloading a few files from mounted rclone.

I only really have around 1TB of stuff that warrants a backup. I try to prune shit as much as possible because I dont wanna be a datahoerder
Do any of you have some kind of dashboard for backups, thinking about vibecoding one, but not sure how useful it could be. Currently I have scripts that write to log files in my laptop and my pi. They push to different clouds and locally, but some scripts have stopped working i think and it might be time to future proof it

nah, just offline backup, drives in a box stored in another building, pop them in my JBOD once a month, run a script, done. Really easy and hassle-free thanks to hot-swap caddies and zfs replication (simply sends incremental snapshots).

Only 2 copies of my files
Copy and paste to an external hard drive on a Windows 10 machine. I verify the files that are copied and save the sfv file. I then chop up the sfv file into multiple files. Every month when I add more stuff to my backup I verify the files using only one of the sfv file. Then next month I use the 2nd one, then 3rd and so on. This way the drive doesn't get hammered for 50+ hours and instead it does a verify for roughly an hour instead. Takes longer to verify each file but I don't mind. To do a full verify of the drive it takes me 9 months as I have 9 sfv files.
I have them inside a DAS. I don't remove the drives unless I have to. I guess when I get more drives I would need to buy anti-static plastic and store them in a foam case or something.

What do you guys use for cable management? Not like server room type stuff, but like an office/lab/bench setting where you have multiple monitors and power cables and usb and other things running around? I need a good cable organizer too I guess, lot of loose patch cables, USB, etc.

Re data cost, due to how some vendors offer data it's initially cheap to replace but will become drastically more expensive over time. e.g, many vendors offer something similar to either a year of data or some ceiling like 20TB w/ a subscription that can be had as cheap as $200/mo, but outside that it's prohibitively expensive (like $20k/year for example for the options data I'd want). So immediately it's relatively cheap data, but the replacement cost accrues quickly.

*: Crypto exchanges are kind of weird because the data is free if captured live, like from Coinbase, unlike traditional markets where you have to pay to access various tiers of the data feed, but on the flipside the historic data for it is for some reason very expensive. So it's unique in that it's important to capture it live continuously. For all other data sources I can think of, I can get the last years worth of data for ~$200 from Databento. Ideally you would want to store/log locally to like an SSD, and then do a daily or weekly upload to the longterm storage. seconding this, i went through the rabbit hole of embedded x86 chips, ARM boards etc. They are simply not worth it, ended up with Dell R330 (same Intel platform as this SuperMicro board).
As you said, E3v5/v6 is plenty power efficient (unlike the big chips like E5v4/Scalable) while having enough native SATA ports and PCIe lanes, plus you get ECC and IPMI, i feel it's the best middle ground.

I wanted to get a few small machines for some autistic experiments with something like kubernetes, so I bought a few of pic related.

Also, I was aiming for something with around 16GB of RAM and 4 CPU cores, which is relatively close to the typical m5.xlarge node sizes used in large scale services.

I think there were some Dell Optiplex and HP Elitedesk pre-builds that might have been a tad cheaper, but they were something like 150W+ vs this thing’s 25W TDP. And I’d feel a lot weirder about leaving a stack of those running long-term than a stack of mini-PCs.

TDP is completely irrelevant when most of the time your server is idle therefore idle watts (actually measured with a wattmeter or ups features) is way more important.
also when you stack those boxes (which are not meant to be stacked anyway) take a good look at idle temps and load temps compared to them not-stacked and make sure they dont throttle during a typical load which is #1 complaint for Ryzens crammed into that form factor.

lol, surely you're remembering things wrong, 150W TDP is like server-class 20+ cores/40+ threads CPUs in huge LGA 2011/LGA 3647 sockets with tons of IO.
Socket size actually is a pretty good aproximation of idle power usage, it does not matter that much what CPU you'll put inside of it.
And as other anon mentioned, TDP is irrelevant for power usage, it's a metric used for designing cooling of a chassis around the CPU, the low power Xeons "L" CPUs for example simply have a lower ceiling to accomodate for desings with worse cooling.
Some workstations require an additional cooling after certain TDP threshold, for example my HP Z240 SFF whined about needing a second fan after putting a 65W+ TDP part in it.

Sounds like you're using a smaller PC or something and external drives (3.5" HDD?) and need something like a real rack mounted array at some point. We need to know where your current limitations are, what your caps are with data transfer, what you want, and will eventually need. Needing more disk space is a given, we all need more. You need speed, expansion, and reliability.

Buying the right stuff the first time will save you time and money in the future. Don't blow $5k on some reddit bullshit that won't fit your needs in 18 months.

I generally don't recommend these prebuilts, but in the current year they're actually not priced to bad considering everything else, which was not the case in the past (building your own was cheaper and more powerful). And as others have said, you can always keep the disks for the next 'server' and sell the box when you're ready to go to the next level.

Yes, I will be reading from this often to train statistical models (not 'AI'/LLM models). I'm not sure what the 'size of read' is here, but the data needs to be streamed and basically for any given training session I might want to use all available data which may be ~30-40TB and grow from there.

I'll get answers to this as soon as I'm able. I'd imagine reading from it but I'm unsure. Everything on that end has been fast enough for me so far though. Right now I just have the USB-C cables going directly from the drives' SATA into my Mac.

Right now the immediate thing is storage, but I don't want to keep buying the 12v per-drive power supplies and just leaving them laying on my desk. I'll try to get better answers for the remainder. Sorry I've been tired all day but appreciate the help. I think no RAID would be bad for me over time. I haven't really thought that out much yet. I might be able to get away with accessing one disk at a time depending on how I organize the data on disk though (eg if chronologically organized across all disk it might work by starting with the oldest disk and moving forward).

Not all at once, it only needs access to the data stream as it replays data chronologically from disk, as if it were listening to a fast-forwarded live market feed, if that makes sense, and I think it changes the compute requirements a bit.

Ok, I think we're on the right track. Those newer Macs are pretty powerful, so the compute likely won't be your bottle neck. Guessing it's going to be network, and whatever speeds you can get out of the HDDs.
I was looking at more the minisforum products, and pic related (on top of the disk array) would probably be your end goal type of device. It has compute, but more importantly, the 10GB networking that you'll want for faster transfers. It can plug into the array from hundreds of meters away, and all of your future expansion is just slapping drives in the chassis. I would check their website too, noticed some different prices and options available for their products on their own site, amazon, and newegg. They have some pretty cool accessories too.

Yeah I think that's closer to the route I want to go just a big expandable collection of drives + something to serve data with that my Mac or some other client will consume (potentially, in the distant future, maybe a more powerful client if needs warrant it). The 10GBe is really important imo. Basically you just need the network connection to the disk array. That small box, and the 5-disk NAS box both have 10GB. The NAS is probably the way to go if you buy it on their site, they have a pretty good deal with it and some ram. You can use that as your NAS for now, move your drives to it, and then later use it as the interface to the disk array. PCIe expansion slot for more network, or storage and additional oculink if you want to add a couple of GPUs to it. Just need to verify PCIe lanes etc. Eventually make it a SSD box, and the HDDs all in the array. There's probably some dongle thing apple sells for a ridiculous amount that will let you have a 10GBs connection, either ethernet or USB.

Not for the price and size. It's a pretty trick little box. Ryzen 7 is more than enough for a file server, you can spin up some VMs in it too, and if you hook a GPU up to the oculink it's basically a pretty modern gaming machine. Prices for HDDs, SSDs, RAM, will all fall eventually, and there's plenty of room in that thing for some future SSD expansion. For example, say in two years prices go back (or below) what prices were a couple of years ago. Just putting five 8TB 2.5" SSDs in the main bays will give you that 30-40TB of storage you need for the dataset. Have that hooked up to your PC via the 10GBs ethernet. Have all the larger capacity HDDs in the array, on the 5GBs ethernet, and it's just for bulk storage basically.
The available x16 slot also lets you use some older used hardware for the interface to the array, allowing you to save heaps on used enterprise gear.

That with the ram at $720 is a pretty good deal, lots of room to grow, and it can probably replace your mac at the same time. Working from home, or having to travel, a small box like that isn't that big of a deal to transport in a backpack or a carry-on, so that's another plus in my book.
You're also not tied down with their OS, you can install TrueNAS, Proxmox, Debian, Windows, whatever on it, and also spin up VMs etc.
By the time you need the array (two-three years from now?) I bet they will be dirt cheap and full of 20TB drives. Datacenters bought all that shit because it was cheap, but now they're pulling it out for flash. You can replace a rack of rust with a 4RU array of high capacity U.2.

While I'm at it, different board, but I've got two different boards from this vendor, and both of them have stuff on the back of them. This one doesn't have the ports terminated, but they're on the board. Anyone have a guide of how I should test them to see if they're actually connected to anything? Otherwise I'm thinking about using this shit to practice soldering expansion ports.

I just like a really small form factor and the 10" format is modular and looks cooler than a traditional case imo. I might be stubborn and still send it on that front.

I don't feel like I need a full 'computer' in the rack initially since it's acceptable for me to be solely hardwired to the Mac desktop via USB-C/Thunderbolt. I kinda look at the DeskPi thing as just shelf space for racks then with room in the back for fans, PSU, SATA bus and stuff like that with room to eventually get a mobo + CPU in there w/ 10GbE.

But obviously I dont know what I'm doing I just have this gut pull and bias so maybe to some extent I should stop asking for advice lol.

It's your money, and I get the want to tinker and try your hand at doing a pretty well documented project, because it likely won't fail (I mean it will 'work', but it won't really meet your needs, and worst case, some shit SATA controller fucks you).

Your main needs are 10GBs between the storage and client, and enough drives to spin up to saturate it if you're not using SSDs. Try to keep that as the primary focus. You can do this with an i5-2500k in a 15 year old Shuttle if you want, but that doesn't mean that it's ideal, or going to last another 10 years into the future as tech continues to evolve.

Exactly, and that's where I was going with the AIR NAS, just put whatever SATA you have in that, use it as an interim, and then hook the array directly up to it via the 5/10GB. The U.2 features, and the PCIe x16 for future expandability are icing on the cake. In the current market landscape it is a great deal considering what boxes like that would have cost in the past (hence why DIY was so popular).

again, that 'server' doesn't hold a candle to the AIR NAS. The disk array in the second link looks good from a cursory glance. That and the NAS is what you want.
The way the market has 'flipped' with ram being so expensive, actual modern mother boards and chipsets are selling for super cheap. That's why I keep recomending going as modern as possible for that piece, and not buying older used enterprise gear. You buy something now that will last 10 years, not something that was considered top of the line 10 years ago. It will limit your future, cost more to run, and add complexity (and noise) that you don't need to deal with. Not to mention that they're overcharging you for this stuff, just because it has (old) ram in it.

I used basic Windows shares for years, and still do for a lot of stuff. The main problem is accessing them from non-Windows devices. In my experience Linux and Android connectivity to Windows SMB shares is finicky and Jellyfin works as a great frontend to access from any phone or smart TV. i didn't follow the reply chain, so i'm not sure of your exact requirements, but i'm using R330 + MD1200 myself as my NAS. x86, ECC memory, IPMI for remote management, ZFS as the filesystem, all the goodies.
Started with just R330 with 4 HDD bays in AHCI, later expanded with SAS HBA + MD1200 JBOD. And you can easily expand further with more JBODs, you can even chain JBODs if you don't have HBA ports.
I'm about to move so they'll finally get properly mounted on a rack instead of just sitting next to my desk.

as for R330, not really, thing has been rock solid, it's suprisingly quiet, fans can be controlled too (which is no longer the case for 14th and newer generation Dell servers), had no issues with it running 24/7 next to my desk. Swap ODD for SSD tray for boot drive to not waste 4x HDD slots. Fitted PCIe with HBA, 40GbE Mellanox and NVMe for L2ARC.
MD1200 is cheap, but not ideal for noise, the only cooling it has is the two fans located in PSUs. Fans can be controlled, but require special serial cable. If i'd still live next to it, i'd probably look for a JBOD with a row of fans just behind the backplane for better cooling. I've only booted in once a month for offline backups, even with fan control it would be very annoying for it to sit next to my desk.
But since i'm going to put them in a rack in a storage room, noise is no longer an issue.
Dell caddies are very nice for hot-swap, but make sure to get ones with metal sides instead of plastic ones if you can (if sellers even differenciate them). Metal ones slide in/out very easily, while plastic ones stick a bit, bit harder to get them in and out.

I have a home server built with parts from my old desktop computers.
Mostly a Ryzen 3700X with 16 GB of RAM and some 6 or 7 HDDs.

What are your tips for reducing power consumption?
I am already enabling disk spin down to save power (they are old disks, I don't care about wear and tear).
What else can I do? Do you guys change the Linux scheduler behaviour to keep the CPU at lower clocks?

Pretty minuscule. Because if you download a file on a non-ECC machine and get extremely unlucky and it does a bit flip while in your non-ECC RAM, when transferring the file to a machine that has ECC that machine won't know it did a bit flip in your original machine. It's either you have ECC RAM on all your machines or don't bother with them.
Only time I think ECC RAM is good is if it's on a machine that's on 24/7. RAM errors do happen and some things will crash. Sure, a restart can fix it but it can save you hours troubleshooting a RAM error that you can't reproduce because you were just unlucky.

that's why i went full schizo and replaced my PC with ECC-capable workstation. Other devices only use the storage for consumpion in read-only, so even if they flip a bit, it doesn't affect the data on the NAS.
I even setup NFS with krb5i for end-to-end integrity, so a cheap chink switches and routers won't silently corrupt my data either. It's a shame that you have to deploy Kerberos just for this though, NFS should have had a checksum extension for this exact usecase.

Whenever I want to download something I remote desktop to my workstation and do it from there. Problem is I don't really know a good way to share links since I can't copy and paste links. At first I was using Discord and pasting the links there and opening it on my workstation, but I realized that wasn't safe. Now I just have a notepad file that I paste links to and copy from.

I have a USB JBOD 4x3.5" drive enclosure on my desk right now, and it's pretty small compared to even an ITX sized case. I don't know how tall those 10" racks are (never looked into them because they're so limited, and I don't want a rack on my desk), but width and depth should not be an issue.
One thing I try to do when 'building out' weird combos like that is just measuring and taping and folding paper into boxes to get an idea of the space needed.

The hardware is a great deal, and they are selling them with the ram option and if you do the math, they're selling the ram for cheaper than the going rate if you bought it separately, so a great deal all around.

Time is money too anon, and buying a bunch of used stuff to 'test' if it works, then buying more etc. It can get out of hand fast, and then you're left with a bunch of scrap you either spend more money on to make work, sell at a loss, or just toss.
Been doing this for almost 25 years now, and if I can spend just 10% more knowing that I have a solution without a lot of headache, it's worth it to me.

That is about the size of a Node 804. You can fit a lot of stuff in a Node 804, 23+ 2.5", 10 3.5", or a mix of the two, plus native support for ITX, mATX, PSU, watercooling, comes with fans, etc.

The rack on the otherhand, you can rack mount stuff, but it's not a real server/enterprise form factor. It's wall mountable, which is cool, but the thing weighs over 100lbs empty.

I bought the 804 because it fits inside a drawer in my desk, out of site. I'd rather look at it on top of the desk, than whatever monstrosity pic related is. I can see mounting it in a closet or something, but I'm not putting that shit in my office.
