>>109938723gm sirsquick call?
Hello
new job locked in, once again in an all-male interview process, still 100% rate after 10 jobstotal foyim boycott, I'm never accepting interviews with them ever again
>Sanctity of labor. The moral and spiritual language of wage slavery. You are expected to have a career and a sense of purpose. Yippee! Be a wholesome guy with a wholesome career and a modest income. Go out and do things so you have new fun facts for the weekly meeting icebreakers. Your j*b cannot simply be the place you exchange labor for money. It has to develop you as a person and eventually become part of who you are. The pernicious corporation wants to occupy categories of life that previous societies reserved for family, religion and community.>This is deeper than corporate branding anon. The institution force feeds you vocabulary for interpreting your own life. By the time someone is fully acclimated to corporate life, they can explain their life story through the language of the company without anybody telling them to. In other words, ritualized.>Any conscious person would lament taking part in this. Some stay and relinquish consciousness. Others look to leave and can’t find the exit. There is an especially bleak point where one recognizes the absurdity of the entire performance and still has to perform it every morning. Everyone knows the enthusiasm is fake, yet the smile still has to appear. The transparency of the performance is THE POINT of the ritual. You are demonstrating that you will participate despite seeing it clearly. That’s humiliating. Corporate speak is the most offensive medium of communication one could undertake. Nobody involved is fooling anyone about their true intentions. That is the true indicator of a Baphomet Humiliation Ritual. Speak down plainly, do not even attempt to fool the subject.
>>109938748Is it possible to network out of college? I did no networking in college and now have zero real useful connections. I got a job out of college but it's not helping me get any other jobs (maintaining websites from early 2000s that are not modern at all) And I'd like to pivot from webdev to systems programming using C/C++ or rust. But since I have no real network to get into any sort of job with that I'm struggling to get interviews just based on projects and such. I am doing a grad certificate in embedded systems so will have more educational systems programming for my resume but I want to like network with people in the systems/embedded fields but not sure how to find anyone to really network with

>>109938748>>109938835
>>109938822No you should learn to Network(CCNA/CCNP)
>>109938723>Be a senior tech writer covering like eight different products at this goofy company>It's tech but it's finance so everyone is kind of a finance bro and deadlines are extremely fluid>Team #1 sets up calls to discuss enablement strategy or new feature deployment, cancels call ~20 minutes before it's supposed to happen, reschedules for next day.>Happens multiple weeks in a row>Team #2 has a product they've been planning on releasing to beta in October. Bumped from May of this year. Bumped from November of last year. Bumped from May of last year. Bumped from November the year before. Bumped from May the year before.>Team #2: "This might end up slipping into next year">Every time I get invited to a meeting I think I'm going to see something I can write about and add to our help center, but every time I ask for a build or QA environment they tell me they need to circle back with Compliance about a tiny issue that may be blocking the QA environment, then don't hear back from them for 3+ weeks and multiple follow-up emails>Last month I heard about a new product that needs documentation coverage but won't be ready for QA until "Q3 next year" (aka Q3 2028+)At least they pay me well and it's 100% remote because holy shit this job feels extremely stupid sometimes.
>>109938791I actually managed to get a job in a nearly 100% woman company. I learned later the company was initially supposed to be women-only, and the first few years it was exclusively vegan.Otherwise it's as you say, women never hire competent men, only chads.
>>109938866I'd rather do systems programming. firmware or embedded mostly
>>109938938Sounds like a heavenly 0 stress environment
>>109939020Lowest stress job I've ever had. I know I've got it good but I wish I had a little more of a tangible output so that I could stop being the bitch boy that everyone slings work onto (work that will be instantly added to the 'this won't get done because no one does anything here' pile)
>>109939042Work on something useful on your own time, bro.
we need a 200k+ tc only twg
>>109939095So /utwg/?
job abandonment is comfy to imagekinda like back in childhood the house was too messy, so we often didn't open the door to friends or strangersjust look out a small hole in the blinds to look who was knocking, sometimes I'd crawl on my hands and knees to get there without being seen (some people would come up to our window and look inside like peeping toms, like my moms Indian friend kek)one time, someone was at the door and I quietly went to look and noticed the door was unlocked!! I quietly locked it just before this random 45yo man tried opening it!! I think he was a criminal. Who the fuck opens a random persons door?Anyway, similar to job abandonment. Just purge all responsibility, and hunker down until they stop calling/knocking/seething. Not my problem
>actually a decent number of jobs in the salary range i'm looking for and with compatible skills>not a single one below 45m travel time and often 70-90m + having to go to other offices around the country pretty often>EU so salary ranges are minuscule and renting or moving would unironically make me less money at the end of the month that if i just went to work for the mcdonalds across the street
>>109939329I earn 170k eur.
Some white guy wrote do the needful in an email today to a bunch of indians. Not sure if it was ironic or not
>>109939353bro is speaking their language to get them to do work
>>109938822>sysjeet/embedjeetkek. someone needs to sit you down and have a talk with you if you think the grass is greener over there
>>109939343Good for you
>>109939353If he's ESL, he might have truly believed this was valid English because of exposure to Indians. I've had a few cases like these in companies I worked at before.>>109939400My point is, you can do it too.
>>109939406Sure mr biochem PHD
>>109939343What kind of job pays you that much in Europoor.
>>109939417How did you know!??
>>109939420A job for an american company
>>109939446It's not exactly the first time you brag about it here but fair play, you won. I don't see how I myself could do something approaching that though
>>109939343Sorry for your loss anon.
>>109939378well the idea would be getting in a defense company where you have to be a citizen so I'd mostly work with white people. also live in a pretty white state so by default most places wouldnt have many jeets if any
>>109938748That's the cyanide seasoned coffee
>>109939471Fine, I'll stop posting then. But it's really just luck, keep throwing the dice and you can do it, too. I truly believe this. European branches of US companies sometimes work, but most likely you want to look at US-based companies that are looking to hire in Europe (which is not the same thing). If the posting is public, it will probably be flooded with applicants. Backchannels like ads that are only displayed on the websites of accelerators or investor portfolio companies can work, though.
>>109939406Yeah I'm guessing he's some eastern European esl
>>109939524Doctor says i am immune due to acute parental poisoning.
>>109939420>>109939459that's not happening. senior positions around here pay 45-50khighest i've ever seen was i think 80k on the upper range of a principal architect position with 8-10 YOE for microsoft for a specific technology with certs.as a middle, realistically i can only really hope for something in the 33-36k range, with bonuses of maybe 2k
>>109938723Cute Juliet
>>109939590Really? Where? In Poland, an L4 at google earns 424k PLN.In Sweden, it is 1.3m SEK.In France, 117k eur.Are you Bosnian or something?
>>109939534I am in fact considering doing what my current boss did, which is move to the US (my globohomocorp has offices everywhere but has european roots) and then come back on a very good salary (essentially the same as yours) although he's a peculiar profile
>>109939620
>>109939523fine but im warning you that embedded sucks ass and pays like shit for a reason. theres no glory in it. any modicum of intellectual curiosity you had going into it will be crushed
Migration from legacy AngularJS to Angular complete in less than a weekHow I did it:>step 1 upgrading from AngularJS 1.5.3 to 1.8.3>step 2 toolchain swap and upgrading runtime from Node 10 to 24, setting up safetynet>step 3 hybrid bootstrap>step 4 converting services to Angular>step 5 UI components to Angular>step 6 routes to Angular>step 7 removing AngularJS, UpgradeModule, etc.
>>109939729playwright tested, i presume?
>>109939739yep
>>109938822going to meetups and conventions is how you would do it. just try not to be one of those guys that only goes to break into an industry and use people to land a job. it is really pathetic to see that.
>>109939646Good luck!
>>109939661That should be somewhat lower than France, but not much.
>>109939665defense contractors pay a pretty penny because govt money. and it'd be infinitely better than web dev im doing now. Have to constantly be "on call" basically every day. Am expected to get a text at 6 am on a sunday and answer it or midnight on a saturday and answer it. Same with any hours outside of work hours during the week. It's hell I want to go into work, do my job then go home and not have to worry about being called in at 11 pm on a friday because someone doesn't like the way a feature looks 5 years of that and I am completely over it
>>109939951lol, lmao.hard to say what would my title even be at google, but since i'm not big on coding, IT would be my best guess
I have Canada fatigue
>>109940316IT is a janitor-tier position, schizo. The term to use for comparison is "level" as in "L4 google salary".>hurr durr mom and pops underpays that means google doesn't payinbred-tier.
>>109939981defense generally pays 2-3x less than public companies and once you niche yourself into systems/embedded work you nuke your career, earning potential, and opportunities because most other devs are too fucking retarded to understand what you do. youre also trading oncall flexibility for crunch time like gamedevs do. imagine having to work on weekends until midnight in a small busy lab with no internet access for 3 months straight, debugging somebody else's shitty code and hardware. and because the hardware and software is usually outdated or proprietary, you or your dei hire coworkers cant google most of the issues you run into for answers
>>109940343go back then gurpreet
>>109940387>IT is a janitor-tier positioni'm not kidding myself, my skills are not really in line with the kind of scale google is working with.no certs either.but to be fair, checking the actual google job site, the 2 positions listed are 60k and 90k.granted, not much of a sample size but the pic i posted earlier is probably bogus.that being said, said 2 positions have nothing in common with what i know or want to do so eh. i'll keep an eye out just in case but i'm not holding my breath
>>109939620>just get l4 at google bro, it pays... 130k usd with 45% of it taken in taxes
>>109940413forgot to mention i really hope you like debugging other peoples problems because thats what youre going to be doing most of the time. might take you 2 months just to solve a particularly egregious bug while your dei hire manager(s) pester you about it in weekly hour long scrum meetings. turns out that software issue was actually a hardware issue, so now you think its the hardware guys problem right? no, now you need to quickly shit out a software workaround and shit up the codebase while youre at it so you can focus on the other 100 issues that piled up meanwhile.
>>109940657>retard can't comprehend the difference between average tax and marginal tax
>>109940715no, 45% is roughly the amount of 130k usd salary that is taken in taxes.it doesnt count the employer side taxes that reduce the total compensation and it doesnt include things like VAT which is 25% lmao.
>>109940733Ask the clanker instead of making a fool out of yourself.
>>109940771?? retard
>>109940825The clanker is literally telling you it's making shit up on the total number, and is also using old numbers. Even then it gives you a figure below your bullshit, so self-pwn.
>>109940413defense around me pays about 100k for the starting salaries, and right now I make 70k as a fullstack which is like less than 10th percentile for my state and also under the median for the country so it's still a big bump in pay. and I'd rather stay late at work than leave and get interrupted in my free time doing stupid stuff. Im also not entirely locked into wanting embedded any "software engineering" job at a defense contractor would work as long as it isn't web shit
Amerifriends I need to know: how many days off do you get a year? Not counting national holidays
>>109940846it changes based on the municipality. is this trolling or legit retardation? last bait i am responding to.there are people on here who are legitimately surprised to find out that people get taxed an insane amount in europe. theyre even surprised to find out the salary is so much less too. so your post could be retardation or just bait, its impossible to tell.
>>10994087710 days of PTO minimum, after that it depends on the companyWhen I was working at [company], the salaries were way below FAANG (senior was ~180k but everybody was senior except literally two people who were associates/mid level and a handful of principals/staff engineers) but the tradeoff was that the office was closed for all of December and we got 20-35 days of PTO off too based upon how many years you worked there.
>>109940877like 5 weeks paid time off that includes sick days. Can only roll over like 40 hours from pervious year and cant cash it in sadly
>>109940909So ~42 to ~57, nice nice nice but I imagine that's 0.00001% rarity
>>109940882>self-pwns>cries about itLol. Lmao even. The effective tax rate in commiefornia is 34.9% at $130k. Except you can barely survive on $130k.The effective tax rate in stockholm (since that's your selected country) at 130k euros is 37.9%. However, at this income level, you live like a king.
>>10994087715 days because I've been at this company for 7 years. Never had a job with more than 13 days before.
>>109940850im telling you, youll kill yourself if you go into embedded and defense is overwhelmingly embedded jobs. if you can manage to get something else maybe itll work out but i dont recommend sticking around in the industry for too long
>>109940928The point of the anecdote is that it really depends on your employer. And that you can either have an eye watering salary or a good work-life balance but you can't have both simultaneously.
>>109940947Working at small companies I assume?
>>109941056No, medium and large companies. Including microshit and meta.
>>109941063That's disconcerting, I would have expected FAGMAN to give you a lot more than that
>finally got promoted>For years thought I could get the position be "being better at coding">Finally realized the meme>Realize now all that matters is the appearance of competency in front of the people that decideThat's it. Not even delivering matters. Just look like you know what you're talking about in meetings and you're golden. Fucking clown world.
>>109938960Let me guess. No work got done.
a friend of mine called me today offering me to become part of their startup... under the argument that shit is so bad today that you either start selling your own stuff or get left behind.shit looks grim af. how are things going for you?
>>109941135The men (tech team) did some work sometimes, but yes, it was absolutely a lifestyle company.
>conversing with H-1B indian at work>works in a different and non-tech department>pretty friendly guy, is appreciative of all the times I took care of his tickets and helped him out with his laptop issues>tell him I'm studying for AWS certifications>he leans in and offers me his connections back home that will get me IT certificates for a price>I decline but thank himIm surprised, surprised that I'm surprised, but also a little flattered.
>>109941282don't be too flattered he gets a kickbackit's a whole industry

>>109940343Everything about Cucknada is dreadful, first in the list being Cucknadians.
>>109941390Whatever do you mean? You don't like a colder drearier version of California with lower salaries and double the housing costs and a husk of a national identity that simply revolves around not being American?
chasing immigrant skirt is my main pastime, I love canada
>>109941406It'd still be at least survivable if it weren't for the locals being greedier than the greediest jew, more deceitful than the most deceitful chink, dumber than the blackest gorilla nigger, less competent than the least competent pajeet, and I can keep going.
>>109939729I don't see you mentioning writing unit and E2E tests first for the old AngularJS project and only then starting the migration. With this much code there's almost no way it fit in the context window.
>>109939981Why is oncall such a problem for developers? Why dont developers just isolate their systems properly and negotiate remote work with their teams for oncall rotations across opposite time zones.
>>109941449Because as usual, devs have 0 power or say over these things, and m*nagers don't know the first thing about anything.
>work for a small software shop of less than 50 people for half a decade >every time someone leaves we prepare a farewell card and buy him a gift, some small, some ridiculously expensive like a jewelry >I chip in every time >I get laid off >receive no card
>>109941485Yup. I no longer do these activities for that reason.
>>109941448step 2
>>109941485Sorry bra. That first lay off legit hurts. Then you become the Punished Mercenary.
Mental fatigue has drained an hour and a half of my day
>>109941499I'm not saying it can't be done but I remain critical. I've had my trouble with those """automatic""" migrations assisted by Opus just a few months ago. And yes people did complain A LOT about my giant ass prs.
>>109941522Only the AI psychosed only say otherwise.
>>109941527AI is great, don't get me wrong, but the context window remains a huge bottleneck for large codebases. The more isolated a task and the more well-defined the requirements the likelier it is that Opus or Fable one-shot the task.
>>109941537Only the AI psychosed think it magically works as opposed to only being useful for tiny things with very questionable time and financial economics due to the incredible failure rate, not to mention that only 1% of the context is usable and performance degrades to 0 after that.
>>109941522There’s a reason I didn’t even think about attempting this until last week. Even Opus 5 was trash at this sort of stuff. Technology gets better
I'm relatively new to the Angular space, but wouldn't a big sweeping upgrade from AngularJS to Angular 2 potentially cause a lot of silent failures and regressionssorry to ask an actual tech question in the Indian Hate General
>>1099415685.5 is literally a disaster, worse than 5 which is worse than 4.6Take your meds.
>>109941568Interesting I'll keep it in mind. Haven't worked on large refactorings recently, only on some not-so-well defined tasks that required a few iterations.
>>109941598>but wouldn't a big sweeping upgrade from AngularJS to Angular 2 potentially cause a lot of silent failures and regressionsNta but it's Angular 22 and the most difficult part is refactoring and migrating stuff that was previously already implemented wrong or with anti-patterns. What kind of moron writes back into an input!?
>hey anon can you help us out with x>heh now you own x foreverThis is ridiculous. The only dial I have is the quality and I fully intend to turn it all the way down.
>>109941624Getting to own things is the dream dude. That's your black box to fuck up and gatekeep now and pretend like you're essential to keeping alive.
>>109941517what happened?
>>109941449it's one thing for on call but I am on a team of 4 devs and am the only one ever called in off hours because the others don't repsond or are somehow always away from their computers so it's not that I'm on call it's that im the only one on call 24/7 and am like 90% sure I make the least out of any of them and again like 10th percentile for salary for software devs in the US and in my state.
>>109941751Did you talk to management about expectations? You might be letting it control your life way more than intended by management or the team. Otherwise you need to stop letting your team exploit you and setup an oncall rotation for your team. Outside of your own rotations, its not your problem.
>>109941973management is the ones calling me lmao. and they don't want to do on call. Think im just boned in this role and need to find something new but this experience has left a sour taste in my mouth for web dev
anyone knows what github for copilot tokens translate to, monetarily? I get 10k a month, wondering how much I'm leeching off my company
>>109942000Managers are like women. If they're needy, its because you enabled them to be like that. Start out slow and increasingly ignore them when they reach out. If they bitch about it, just say you cant do oncall past a certain time anymore because youre busy. There's 4 other guys on the team they're paying. This isn't your problem. This is their problem. They need to hire more people if they expect 24/7 oncall.
>>109941702I just got to a point where I don't know how to keep up with the tracks I get assigned. I'm doing like 4 at the same time but my coworkers are also doing that + they're more important and I seem to not be keeping up with the rest.I want to start therapy because of that, plus my relationship with my project leader being shit
>>109939534Do you have to actually be a tech wiz to get those US jobs or are there still positions open for DEI if you're from EE?

anyone else work someplace where they’ve given Claude access to non-devs? We’ve had multiple outages due to vibe coded apps raping our services and bringing them down
>>109938822networking is the fake story that people tell when they got a job using family connections or some racially motived or tribally motivated DEI hiring job. I'm guessing you are one of the 99% white people that do not have family connections and are just getting fucked over. same as me.
>>109942292sorry, all the previous DEI hires were indians who only hire indians now. it's over. you're as fucked as an unemployed white man. congrats.
>>109942000you sound very junior. let this be a lesson, don’t respond outside of working hours and definitely don’t try to be a hero
>>109942705NTA but it's survivorship bias. There is legitimately times in college where knowing somebody above you helps you land the interview for the internship/job but imo it really starts to have limits after graduating college.Referrals don't guarantee an interview much less a job
>>109942775anon specifically said after college. he's probably asked people who appear sucessfuly how'd they get their job and getting the cover-story that they networked.
>>109942736this is the correct answer but junior anon sounds like he's backed into a corner>>109942000you've got two options. either casually mention that you got a gym membership and need to get in better shape, then when work hours end just sign out, and don't respond to calls with the excuse that you were at the gymOR even better but it will take some balls, and this is what I would actually doTell your manager that you don't have a problem with working on-call, after hours, but once you've reached 40 hours of work for the week you will stop working and will not be available until start of next week. Then send an email to your manager summarizing that you will now be working 40 hours per week whenever including on call and will send an email status whenever that happens. Then when that happens you document your work hours in a status email like this:Monday 13 hours workedTuesday 12 hours workedWednesday 12 hours worked Thursday 3 hours worked.See you Monday,Anon.send the email on Thursday at the end of the 3rd third hour and sign out.
>>109942775You people must not work with high impact teams at high impact companies. swaths of people have left my org because they went to join whatever hip AI startup their favorite ex-engineering manager started. If i get laid off im a phone call away from joining them

How do I find a job at one of those mega corrupt NGOs that just exist to launder money?
>>109941302True but he makes pretty decent money here, doubt the rupee kickback would be worth much to him
>>109942907did you deliver frequently and on time? did you provide value? did you save someone’s ass? did you at least bring in donuts and coffee on Friday?I know I sound like a meme here but these are the things people remember you by. If you’re an asocial freak that spends your time online complaining about “DEI hires” then it’s no wonder why you’re getting nowhere in your career.
>>109942932high impact meaning if any one of our systems goes down the company is losing millions by the minute. this requires a lot of domain knowledge and expertise, not something you obtain doing generic web dev.
>>109942893>>109942953>muh high impact ai startuplmao this >>109942932
>>109942997yeah, see, there aren't alot of companies that need that sort of tech expertise so when/if you find yourself on the job market, your pedegree will intimidate the hiring manager and it will be difficult to find a job. glad you are doing alright but make sure you don't get laid off.
>>109943047my skillset is pretty t shaped. right now i'm in manufacturing, where the situation (probably) cannot get any worse in the US, so if the tariffs and hardball w/ china works out then hopefully i'll have opportunities for years to come
Being on a walking pad at work on an online meeting is such a power move. You're exhibiting movement while everyone else is sitting, demonstrating you can do it while working, and it's implicit (you're not announcing, it's just visual). Most importantly, nobody can object to you walking because it's so mundane and "getting steps in" is very accepted.

I'm in a sour mood after a 1-1 with my boss. Definitely going to get passed over for a promo despite doing pretty well.I've been getting glazed by my boss and his boss (the director) weekly for months. The director is known for shitting all over people and being rude. One week he spent 10 straight mins glazing me in front of ~15 people, never seen anything like it before. So, I thought I was in good standing for a promotion1-1 today:>Ask if I'm on track for a promo from his view this cycle>Keeps trying to dodge the question and not really answer it>Ask him directly again>"blah blah ...look to coworker Bob for an example of what a level N looks like">wants to see me do XYZ, needs to see my peer feedback first, can't make any promises, etc etc bullshit excuses>>coworker Bob was only here for 6 months and was not doing XYZ when he was promoted to what I am shooting for>>Bob said himself he would be surprised if I didn't get promoted >>Boss has basically promised to my friend that he will get promoted without dancing around the issue>I just say I understand it's a diplomatic no for now, I understand his perspective, and try to wrap up the meeting>Boss probably notices my checked out expression and totally switches up>"blah blah oh no no don't get discouraged, you're doing good work, you're doing what's expected of you, these are just areas for growth blah blah blah">"blah blah you are on track I just can't make any promises blah blah">you will get opportunities to do XYZ very soon>I pretend that my mood has lightened and wrap up the meeting in a positive manner after more talkingDoes this nigga think I'm retarded? >>109943953Total opposite situationBob, who got promoted, was one of the higher performing technical people who doesn't talk super wellLately I've been focusing on marketing my contributions [talking] during weeklies and have improved a lot at it. >>109943047>your pedegree will intimidate the hiring manager and it will be difficult to find a job. This is correct.Worst, modern companies love firing people on the critical path and making excuses to clients instead of making sure that ship runs tight, because they developed some kind of bizarre narrative that if you have a single point of failure in the org, you should terminate it to let the org magically heal and reorganize more robustly. I don't know what influencer sold them that, but it has been that way for a while now.

Its never been a better time to be a solo dev and a worse time to be a corporate dev. Constant LLM prs, 'maveriks' going off and coding some slop app or library in day, trying to force you to use it or hyping it up to upper management, then abandoning it a week later, all the fun parts of the job solved by prooomping, leaving only cursed integrations, status meetings, politics, and proposal work. >>109948129>where do we go from here, realistically?Honestly, no idea. I think the way software companies are organized needs to be at this point and I'm not sure what the new meta is going to be. It could be that small agile teams who can react quickly are gonna win by being organizationally nimble. It could also be that large firms with other know-how (existing network effects, proposal capture apparatus, robust distribution channels) will dominate. It could be that the meta stays the same, but there's a much larger focus on figuring out what the actual optimal thing to build is. >doing something for yourself and not expecting to make a living from itI do mean this. Maybe I'm just burned out at the current state of my job but working on my own projects has been a relief from what work has been lately.
>>109948235>Maybe I'm just burned out at the current state of my job but working on my own projects has been a relief from what work has been lately.Same. I don't know about you, but I changed jobs recently, after the massive AI adoption by companies this year. It's so much harder to keep up, now. I feel like there's this expectation of delivering real impact after week 2. I see coworkers having their agents open PRs and review others at neck-breaking speeds, and I know they don't understand what's happening on those moving parts at all. I'm trying to onboard myself by going slower, trying to actually understand the direction the project is going, but I fear that management will look at my stats and thinking I'm dragging my feet.

My manager has a "documentation" page he's never read that is full of unreadable llm vomit that he sends to new hires and expects them to read. Sometimes I go check the architecture he's come up with and its actual nonsense that will never scale, other times its perfectly reasonable. >>109949813HR wants to speak about your racism
>>109949813I'll report you to Vance for racism.
One thing I have noticed in the era of AI development: a complete cease to anyone talking about software patterns. Like for most of my career, I have listened to someone every so often talking about how implementing some new pattern or refactoring things to all use such-and-such will be really good for our codebase. And all of that is basically nonexistent now.Instead, all our conversations are just about how to trim down the massive paragraphs from claude outputs, what to put in skills/md files, and other shit like that. But the code itself? No actual discussion any more. Just find it interesting.
>>109949813Assuming you're in the US, they are either hiring people already here as citizens or permanent residents for other reasons, or they are doing the classic H1B trick where you just list qualifications that are way beyond what the actual job is and list a pay window that is stupid low and sounds retarded to most people. Then they do a perfunctory interview phase with US-born candidates so they can check the box that "the role cannot be filled with a US citizen" and open the role to internationals.
>>109949844Software patterns were always unnecessary bloat beyond a select few ones like singletons and interfaces. Factories are fucking gay and I've only once seen someone try to implement a strategy pattern.
aren't h1bs dead because no one wants to pay a 100k feed for an indian it's always been insanely hard to get into the US from the UK because there isn't any reason to work cheaper (wages are bad in the UK, but not indian bad) and unless you are some superstar companies just won't sponsor you
>>109949877Correct. Eventually the massive growth of the IT industry spawned this legion of corporate grifters who figured out that selling fantasy books about software development is really profitable. Robert C. >>109949984I did for a while several years back someplace at our senior dev's insistence. It was a neat exercise, but in practice just became "the implementation has changed significantly from what it was in my head originally, so I have to completely rewrite these and/or add several to cover the mocks and everything else I need". So in the end it's usually just creating a test file and filling it out later. Over time, I saw that shift into not caring as long as people had tests, which is the real reason for it in the first place.

>>109952232You spent a lot of time looking at code in 1 product until you eventually felt confident enough to add to it. Over time as you added more and more stuff you'd be very comfortable with things. It was very time consuming but gave you a pretty good understanding of how things worked.
How do you even get an interview at FAGMAN at the senior level? Is there some kind of secret formula your resume needs to have? Do they only interview people who have prior FAGMAN experience or a degree from a top 10 CS school? I just don’t understand why I’ve never even once gotten an interview at these companies after a decade of applying to them when I meet 100% of the job requirements for every application I’ve submitted. It feels like I’m on the outside of some kind of secret club that makes it impossible for any outsider to get into.
>>109952397Go in person for a masters degree, make friends and use that sweet networking experience to get a position. Its pretty Shrimple.
>>109952411So nepotism is the only way to get an interview at those companies?
>>109952430At the senior level yes. If you get into FAGMAN at the entry level then you are going to suck wind for 5ish years to even get a chance to move up. Also Amazon is a good fagman entry even if the job/management are complete assholes.
>>109952397I got an interview at google, they talked through my experiences and I got rejected because when I said I did data consulting, I only talked to heads of data not ceos. It wouldn't have even made sense in my roles to talk to the ceo, but they had elitism boxes to check
>>109952430>>109949636
>>109952397It's incredibly difficult to get in at the senior level unless you have tons of big tech experience or are seriously cracked. Most of those roles are already filled internally by devs looking to get promoted and a lot of companies legally have to make those listings public even if they already have an internal candidate lined up.
>>109952459So it’s easier to get into faang at the junior level than at the senior level? I thought it was supposed to be the opposite because of the huge surplus of junior swe’s in the job market.
>>109952495Happened at my company. We used a manager in training to interview people for a few positions they were never going to get.
>>109952502Its not a real surplus. If you ever read the interviews being turned into your company you would understand that the quality requirements have gone up from just having a pulse too actual skills for the entry level. So if you never did internships in college its auto trashed, if you never worked with the tech clubs on campus its auto trashed, if you never had a second job working IT for the college or some dumb local PC repair place then trashed. If you don't have side projects that can be tested easily trashed. Before you just had to get through college, spell your name correctly, and not drown when taking a shower to get a job.
I feel like I've been grieving the loss of the future of this career path for the past year. It's clear that there is no future anymore, but I also can't escape it because it pays too well for me to give up and become a garbageman or whatever so I've just been in this state of slowly waiting for my job to disappear and never come back.I feel like quitting every second of every day but I have no idea what I would do afterwards because it's been the only thing I've ever been kinda good at that (was) worth anything.
>>109952531Is this post supposed to be satire or something? Because what you just described is an extremely high bar that very few people would be able to meet. I know you have to be able to solve hard leetcodes in very short time limits for these jobs. It’s only like the top 5% of top 10 cs school grads who are at this level, who probably all have at least an iq of 140.
>>109952538Don't take it lying down or in delusion like the redditors/snailcats. We KNOW AI is going to make a large percent of monkey coding dead, so train in the skillsets that might be boring or difficult, but at least you have a headstart in compared to the ones realizing too late.It doesn't have to be radical, you just need to be more of a public speaker and sales person than 90% of autistic tech people for example. It physically pains me to network but I've started putting more effort into it as well
>>109952572Its not satire but the very least if you can check box those requirements you can skip having to get a masters degree to do entry level bullshit.
>>109952579There’s nothing more delusional than thinking you’re going to make a career out of talking to a chatbot. Why would somebody pay you money to do that?
watching muted porn while on a Teams call I don't even give a fuck
>>109952614>Why would somebody pay you money to do that?I have coworkers that can't do some of the most basic Active Directory tasks *with* AI and still ask for my help. My company hires consultants for projects that I have been on calls with where they are literally vibe prompting Claude in front of me and no one bats an eye.
>Awww geee sorry anon they don't promote people any more awww shuuuuuucks man this suuuuuucks
>>109941131It's backwards. Unless you're a rare super genius, the higher positions mean less of the actual hands on stuff, like coding. One of the biggest early mistakes of my career was turning down a decent position at a fortune 50 company because it was very hands-off in terms of coding. Basically look at something, make sure there's no fuck ups and okay it to be published on their corporate site.Opted for a lower paying coding job at a marketing company where I would burn out after a couple of years.
>>109952966Rare super geniuses don't get good pay, hands-off positions, or higher hands-on positions. They rot in stable but low paid positions doing basically nothing all day, because they're not "social enough" and are "creepy". Their applications to other jobs get rejected before it even gets an interview call, because it contains a lot of "scary" achievements "which means he'll be too expensive".

>>109953230wtf. theyre just going to tell me to open all the ports
>>109952614actually I get paid to make the big brain decisions and choose the correct strategies when implementing new features and fixing bugs and making sure that the code does what we expect and won't break again in 6 months.
