Genuinely crazy how many issues there are when using Linux, never had as many crashes and problems on Windows for 15 years than I've had with Linux in 1 year. My first month of using KDE Plasma caused more crashes than 10 years with Windows 10.

Thoughts on SystemRescue (formerly SystemRescueCD)?

Would you advise using their USB writer tool, or is dd sufficient?

Also, aren't writable filesystems on a live USB a risk if using them to probe potentially pozzed systems? Or am I thinking of something else?

I don't know how you're achieving that. I'm going out of my way to do retarded shit that you'd expect from someone who also managed to brick a Windows 10 install several times and I have no meaningful problems lol.

Sure as fuck haven't seen any crashes in about a year I think.
>>
>>109942031
>I don't know how you're achieving that
Literally nothing, I'm mostly using the default settings. I did figure out what was causing the problem after like a month or two. KDE's preview setting was causing Plasma to crash every time I hovered over the taskbar that had a program with multiple windows/instances open. Turning that off fixed most crashes, they're fairly rare now. I'm getting like 1-2 per month now maybe.

But other than the crashes I've had a fair amount of problems with Linux that I never had with Windows. Updates fairly regularly fucking shit up was definitely a wake up call, I try to wait at least a week or two before updating things now.

What, like this? Can watch both videos in the taskbar at once. Pretty cool.
Or does it require a really big number of windows? I don't normally have many more than 2 unless it's Dolphin.
>>
>>109942143
I forgot to mention that it's fixed now. I had the problem during Fedora 42, for the first month or so before I figured it out and turned it off. I turned it on again after ~6 months and it was no longer causing crashes. I had to move the mouse between 2 or more programs on the taskbar with multiple windows open and it would always crash.
>>
>>109942211
Oh, I know that one. I saw it a really long time ago and I couldn't figure out how to trigger it reliably. I always have more than 1 window open for my browser and it didn't crash most of the time in normal use. I definitely did see it crash plasma a few times, but it came back instantly so I didn't really put extensive effort into figuring out what it was when I couldn't find a way to reliably reproduce it. I only know to put 1+1 together now because you told me about how it works.

Still, 1-2 crashes a month NOW is massive. I don't think I've gotten a single crash in the past 6 months unless you count crashes I expect... because I use certain Windows software that crashes a lot. (On Windows too)

Uh, so, I have Linux Mint installed on my Lenovo laptop. And for very dumb reasons I don't want to get into, I yeeted /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libssl.so.3 into oblivion. What I didn't realize is that apparently sudo links to libssl.so.3 (side note: WHY THE FUCK DOES SUDO NEED TO BE LINKED AGAINST A NETWORKING LIBRARY), so sudo is now nonfunctioning. Then I made the mistake of rebooting, to see if I could boot into single user mode or something and fix it, and apparently Linux Mint Xfce can't even boot to the desktop without libssl.so.3. Any suggestions?

If I have to reinstall, it's not that big a deal, but I have a few hours of installing and configuring software invested in this installation, so if I can avoid it, that would be just super.
>>
>>109944397
I just realized I could boot into a LiveUSB and fix it. But if anyone has a solution that doesn't involve me having to go through that rigamarole, feel free to let me know.
>>

openssl is not network library, dumbo
it's for cryptography, hash, and shit

>>
>>109944552
>openssl is not network library, dumbo
I didn't say anything about OpenSSL. I said libssl.so.3
>it's for cryptography, hash, and shit
libcrypto.so.3 is, but I'm not talking about that.

Do you have anything useful to contribute, or did you just want to out yourself as a callow faggot?
>>
>>109944570
in that case you might be dumb for not checking the `./configure --help` of sudo
  --enable-openssl Use OpenSSL's TLS and sha2 functions
--enable-openssl-pkgconfig-template
A printf format string used to construct the OpenSSL
pkg-config name

and I checked the binaries of sudo package, only /usr/sbin/sudo_sendlog and /usr/sbin/sudo_logsrvd depend on libssl.so, which seems to imply sudo uses it to send the log to some remote server, ssh or someshit
>>
>>109944397
you do know how to extract a file from a .deb, right?
in case you don't
curl -LO http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/o/openssl/libssl-dev_3.0.13-0ubuntu3.16_amd64.deb
ar p libssl-dev_3.0.13-0ubuntu3.16_amd64.deb data.tar.zst | zstd -dc | sudo tar -C / -xvf - ./usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libssl.so
>>
>>109944605
>sudo uses it to send the log to some remote server, ssh or someshit
Yeah, that's fucking retarded.
>>109944669
>you do know how to extract a file from a .deb, right?
Yes, the problem isn't acquiring the file, it's that libssl.so.3 is apparently required to boot into Xfce for some reason.
>>
>>109944683

>>
>>109944689
Ah, that worked to get me a console. Thanks, king. But since sudo is broken without libssl.so.3, how can I acquire superuser privs? It's Mint, so there's no root pwd.
>>
>>109944703
you could compile sudo from source with `./configure --disable-openssl` (no root access needed)
or
place libssl.so.3 into /to/some/path then `export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/to/some/path`, sudo binary now looks inside /to/some/path to search for .so libs
>>
>>109944806
I appreciate the creative approaches, but
>you could compile sudo from source with `./configure --disable-openssl` (no root access needed)
In addition to not necessarily having all of the -dev packages necessary to compile sudo, I don't think it will work without setuid and UID being root.
>place libssl.so.3 into /to/some/path then `export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/to/some/path`, sudo binary now looks inside /to/some/path to search for .so libs
I tried this, and it didn't work. Apparently, it's not the sudo binary itself that's looking for libssl.so.3, but a sudo plugin, and it appears that the environment variable doesn't carry over to the plugin call.
Good suggestions, though.

My laptop touchpad randomly either works or doesn't work when the computer boots. Linux in this case if it matters. 80% of the time it works fine, 20% it wont work till you restart again.
Any clues? Driver issue or hardware error? I might have opened the laptop a few times before, if it matters.

Does anyone else get completely random audio problems on Fedora? Audio just randomly dies/gets quieter on one side and lasts for a bit before fixing itself. Happens to both my speakers and headphones at the same time and they work normally when connected to another PC so it's not a hardware issue. Has happened to me like 3-4 times over 1.5 years, so it's very rare.

Lasted more than a few minutes this time though, running a few commands to restart pipeware actually made it worse. It died completely on one side and then flipped to only working on the other side. Returned to normal after like 5-10 mins... Lmao it happened again as I wrote this, that's another first.

Anyone got any ideas?

I've been having a really weird Steam in Wayland problem. Steam will crash, but it won't look like it has crashed, which is really fucking obnoxious. The chat windows stays open. If firefox is not open, then clicking a link in steam chat and having that open firefox will crash Steam (but not really).

Okay, I have confirmed that the headphones are the issue and that they're presumably dying. I was able to reproduce the issue on my laptop and I tried another pair of headphones and they work fine on both the Fedora PC and laptop so it's the headphones.

Bit of a weird coincidence that they happen to go bad only a few hours after updating the motherboard bios that I hadn't done in ~2 years. But I guess I did have the same (maybe) issue like once or twice in the last year and they are 10 years old so probably just a coincidence.

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to try and help me.
