Windows refugee here.
Zorin OS works extremely well for a brand new Linux user coming from Windows. Very minimal tweaking and it feels smooth. Yes, it's using Ubuntu 24.04 with GNOME, but for the casual/easygoing user, it's not an issue.
CachyOS is making wavea purely for its gaming compatibility. It's based on the Arch Linux system, which is notorious in /g/ circles. However, it still isn't difficult for new users.
>>
>>109991360
>CachyOS is making wavea purely for its gaming compatibility
That's what got me into it.
Mint was my first OS. I am hoping that CachyOS is setting "precedent" for other popular distros to look and follow with the features that Cachy somehow did to unlock maximum speed. I have an Ayymmd gpu/cpu gaming rig and still felt the speed boost.
>>
>>109991370
That's me with Zorin - 9070XT and 9800X3D. With Proton on Steam, it's insanely fast. I've heard that Cachy allows for even newer AMD drivers too which is good.

>Is life a competition on who's got the most complex boot process?
There's not much complexity in ZFSBootMenu or ZFS initramfs setup, actually. Installing the bootloader is as simple as fetching the EFI from https://get.zfsbootmenu.org and copying it under /efi - kernel/initramfs-wise you just have to install ZFS modules and a keyfile that unlocks the encrypted zpool automatically on initramfs boot process to avoid inputting password twice.
>>
>>109991370
Almost anything is an improvement over Mint. Even Ubuntu is.
Mint is a distro for the handful of contrarian Linux users who hate Canonical but still want to use Ubuntu and don't mind having a shit DE because they have a single display that was made before 2010. The distro may have been good like a decade ago, but it's basically stuck a decade in past which is a lifetime in the Linux world.

>>109992261
No, it isn't. Even if it were shit, there's no alternative to it. No real work was done on X11 for a decade since no developer wants to maintain that dogshit code. All the relevant DEs only care about Wayland now and are even dropping X11 support entirely.
>>
>>109990580
Just use Ultramarine. It's Fedora with those 5 minutes worth of setup pre-applied.
>>
>>109993350
That was the reason I never used it in the first place, but it ended up being a mistake since it's the best desktop distro Linux has to offer. If you don't like the name you can just use one of the Fedora-based distros, but they all have retarded names too.

>>109994379
Fair take. It's actually surprising that KDE Plasma doesn't have something akin to layout presets. ZorinOS had this for a long time and even Cinnamon has this from what I recall.
KDE team could easily add something like this to let users get a macOS/GNOME UI with a single click rather than having to navigate 50 different configuration menus.

Use case for layout presets? What makes you think that doing something in a single click rather than having to navigate 50 GNOME extensions is a metric?

What filesystem has the fastest read/write speed on HDDs? I've seen claims that xfs is better for HDDs but I haven't found any benchmarks comparing ext4 to xfs on an HDD
>>
>>109994592
Just use ext4.
>>
>>109994592
I mean, if you're going to use the HDD as a random access device pre-SSD style, that was ReiserFS' job. It's still the fastest generalist HDD filesystem, but there's no case for generalist HDDs any more. I don't think xfs would bench faster than ext4 because random access for metadata, but they've always been pretty close.

These days if it's a drive where the data takes care of its own integrity I use xfs for the low format overhead. Otherwise btrfs for integrity tracking, or ntfs if it needs to be accessible by non-Linux devices.

That's infinitely more complexity than having a mainline kernel without an initramfs.

yea basically, but be careful if your program has weird dependencies as they might drift and you won't be able to run it on a modern system anymore if you keep running system updates. appimages are also safe because they are almost entirely self-contained, there's nix if you wanna learn with that, or you could start stuffing stuff into containers and make custom images that will run forever and ever (it's also possible to build containers with nix).
don't know your exact use case, this is just a bunch of ideas to think about. in most cases you're probably gonna be fine with just saving the tarball like you said though, or appimages if one's available
>>
>>109994592
No filesystem is going to make up for the physical limitations of a hard disk. The differences on a single disk are not likely to matter in any real scenario. If speed matters that much you'd be using some form of RAID... or an SSD. The optimal filesystem depends entirely on the type of workload anyway. You clearly have no idea what the fuck you're doing but are acting like you have it all figured out.

Dracut handles that with quite minimal configs.

So what? Gentoo even tracks the compatibility between kernel version and ZFS support so that I cannot accidentally upgrade to a kernel that's still waiting for ZFS changes.
All in all now I can snapshot my root/home with one command and I can rollback my root to whatever snapshot via ZFSBootMenu and it's nearly instant.
>>

The whole point is root on ZFS. If you don't want that, then you obviously don't need any of those things.

The fact my OS lives on a partitionless/bootloader-less disk that can be remotely backed up & restored with 2 commands, is fairly "minimal" to me.

My workload is that I'm going to store virtual machine images on that drive, since those images are large I thought xfs would be a better fit
The other (perhaps better option) is to use zfs's zvols and give those to the VMs as block devices, but this would introduce some complications, like I can't easily copy zvols around like regular files, and I'm unsure if zvols support compactation like vmware vmdk images, not to mention zfs is rather slow
>>
>>109999322
I'm pretty sure ZFS hates VM images. Just figure out your main use case, gather the requirements and go from there.
>>
>>109999322
zvols are something you use to grant block level storage on a zfs array to vm storage pools. Presumably you have another reason to be using zfs in that case.

Just give the whole drive / partition to virt-manager and you can still extract pool volumes as files with virsh vol-download.

What's the news on the AI discovered vulnerabilities? Has it slowed down from summer or has it kept increasing with how much better vibe coding has gotten?
>>

I'd say devs using current Claude releases and such to check or help write code has become so normalized now that the news of it finding vulns easily isn't news anymore.
>>
>>110002123
There's no change. Everyone agrees that AI finding vulnerabilities is a good thing, but the fact that vulnerabilities are not reported publicly leads to duplicate reports which make things seem 10x worse than they are. They will probably have to use an AI agent to filter duplicate reports since they found themselves in a situation where the same issue is reported by 20 different people, where before you might get 2-3 duplicate reports at most.

".part" would suggest that you didn't finish downloading the file. Due to how 7z compression works, you probably won't be able to recover anything in the archive. You might be able to rename the ".part" into just a ".7z" and see if you downloaded it in full but the browser didn't rename it back properly, but aside from that there's nothing you can do.

someone please recommend a good way to remap keys on arch linux/kde/wayland?

My autism intensifies. I dig my years old "distro" from the grave and added XLibre, IceWM and their dependencies to my own simple package manager (pkg). It's cool to see how well it worked, I didn't have to change much, only added the dependencies as my simple pkg definition format files. The kernel is a bit old but whatever. I built this originally by following LFS and some other docs. It's self-contained, can build itself and is bootstrapped with alpine and mussel.
>MUSL
>GCC
>Coreutils
>Sysvinit
>Initramfs that mounts/inits and runs chroot
>DHCPD
>XLibre
>IceWM
Oh and my package manager builds from source, it simply downloads the source to /var/cache/pkg and builds it. It also tracks build/runtime dependencies, tracks build/install index of packages, supports cross-compiling and such. It's one single bash script.

Way to go!

I've built LFS a few times, even used it as my daily driver, but balked at doing multi-lib. Instead of making my own package manager, I adapted the Slackware package tools to my LFS. In my defense, the modular nature of this package manager enables one to build a dependency tracking fetch-the-packages-for-you type of package manager, for the future. Like you, I stay with older versions of the kernel and some packages.

You are like the successful version of me, doing things I keep starting to do but never seem to succeed on or finish. Don't give up! Maybe I'll use your distro in the future, if you decide to go big time and make a web site for it. :)
>>
>>110003635
You run your LFS system as a daily driver, you're more successful than me I'd say. I have a long way to go before this thing could be used as a daily driver and a long list of decisions to make. I've only tested it in a QEMU VM so far. My build process uses docker, a Dockerfile builds the base root system image that can then be created into an .img file for QEMU with another script.
Anyways, my only motivation for this is to 1. learn and 2. see how simple a working "complete" system could be 3. see how far this simple package manager system can get me

I had to compile my own fork of proton 10 with codecs.

I don't want to use retarded proton GE. I don't want to use proton cachy. They are all buggy.
Just give me a fucking stable version of proton with codecs added. Valve knows what they are doing.

I tried to run two games both proton GE and proton cachy failed to either launch cutscenes or sound. But wouldn't you know, my version just worked.

No retarded tacked on shit, experimental.

I will be making this public on GitHub soon.
I'm sick of this shit. It will be called proton-codecs.

I'm kind of surprised nobody has made this yet. I had to do it myself. The reason was I was having problems on two specific games. Yet with my proton version everything works just like on Windows.

Dark souls 2 scholar of first sin and apotheon.

They specifically failed if you want to test it yourself normally. They fail on everything including proton GE proton experimental.
Just use proton experimental or proton GE and you can see them fail spectacularly.

Seriously this is a problem. How could people go this long without making a vanilla proton version with codec checking and working just like windows does?

Even proton GE has stuttering because it fails to properly decode the WMV codecs.
>>
>>110004222
I'd say it's because Proton-GE worked for a majority of other games I guess so "proton with codecs baked in" wasn't seen as something that needed to have two of existing.
>>
>>110004240
I get that it probably works for the majority of games but isn't the point of proton to be as close to Windows as possible when it comes to gaming? So you can't even tell?

Proton GE does play the cutscenes in dark souls 2 but they are stuttery and they fail to properly decode like windows does. It's buggy.

Also the apotheon windows build running through proton experimental is completely broken the audio doesn't work and even if you try to use proton GE it fails to process the WMV and the XNA audio for cutscenes so it's just silent.

I'd say those are very big flaws

I haven't looked into TCC much but I'd guess you'd want to use that during the bootstrap, were one to bootstrap their distro from "almost nothing"? My distro doesn't care about this part, for now, it relies on alpine linux as the host system during bootstrap. I can fix that later if this thing grows to something usable.
>Also what bootloader do you use, just out of interest?
MBR syslinux. That's what the QEMU bootable .img has, I haven't yet added package defs for grub and such. I haven't thought about this much either. My end goal is to have ZFSBootMenu as first-class bootloader and ZFS obviously as first-class filesystem, though the live CD image one would boot to install this distro with will probably have a simple EXT4 root filesystem or whatever.

As someone whose only experience in windows development was writing some programs in high school using visual studio, can someone please explain how exactly you make an installer and what it does beyond functioning as a script that copies some files into their respective folders?

To answer your question, I'd probably use a program like lddtree to find all the .so files my binary is linked to, and include them into my tarball if I think its unlikely the target system will have said .so file. Alternatively you could do what miniforge did and embed the binary into a bash installer script

What I wonder is why doesn't an universal Linux installer exist already.
>partition drive
>make filesystem(s)
>put a Linux system in some filesystem(s)
It's this part that varies between distributions. Any APT-based distro uses Debootstrap, Arch uses Pacstrap, any RPM-based uses their own package manager. Then there's Gentoo which has the "Stage3" archive.
But in the end it's just about putting files in a filesystem.
Finally:
>make it bootable

Optionally:

Not vibe coded, but highly experimental.

Unfortunately Valve unironically knows best.

The codec issue you're talking about likely is the one cachyos patched in their latest release though (see the issue linked about San Andreas). That particular issue was upstreamed to Wine so at least it will work in the future.
Unless it was some other issue that was already long fixed in Proton 11 (why are you even using 10?).

Also for older games using WMV proton GE is completely broken. So it's not really just like Windows which is what proton should be

I'm actually very excited because my design seems to be working. I have OpenRC now as a first-class init system and my installation stage tarball includes just that. No sysvinit at all, just openrc-init and openrc. ZFS will be first-class file system, ZFSBootMenu will be first-class bootloader. This will be awesome.

GE is the best because it's the only proton that allows me to play my japanese porn novels without problems

I mean it's pretty much just the latest proton-experimental with codecs added plus some other additional tweaks. The anon that was having trouble before didn't even sound like he was using the latest one either.

Unlikely to be yt-dlp. Used it every day for years never ran in to or even heard of such an issue. It's possible, but more than likely something the user has messed up when attempting to switch shells.

>>110011185
I have games that won't even launch with the latest GE proton. So it's a hit & miss, normal proton seems to be more stable in this regard.

Just having those things bootstrapped in your system by default won't make them "first-class".

Does luks+zfs require /boot to be left unencrypted?
>>
>>110011734
No, with ZFS native encryption and ZFSBootMenu, /boot becomes part of / and is included in the root snapshots too.
>>
>>110011734
Oh I didn't see LUKS. With LUKS, it's more complicated... I'm not sure, I'd assume so. I haven't yet looked into that, but I don't know why would you want LUKS with ZFS.
>>
>>110011722
Yeah these days it does.
>>
>>110010128
So cachy OS is more complicated? What's the difference with Zorin or Linux mint?
>>
>>110011885
Basically nothing deep down. Cachy uses Arch as a base which is different from Ubuntu in a lot of ways, mostly in how the binaries used are fairly stock besides the tweaks the maintainers make to the kernel.
>>
>>110011685
Your "distro" is not gonna make "support" magically happen. I, too, can cook up a custom image that gives me, say, RHEL minimal with ZFS root by default. ZFS simply does not have ecosystem integrations in the Linux space. Almost everything that interacts with ZFS in any significant way needs its own special ZFS plugin/glue, most of which are long abandoned. The system itself cannot use half the standard command line tools to interact with ZFS pools/datasets, like, you know, a FIRST-CLASS filesystem would. You're not gonna do any of the work to improve the situation. You haven't even put it together yet and you're *already* coping with "well it's gonna work perfectly on MY distro" because you're just slapping shit together with no real aim or purpose.
>>
>>110011946
I have all that glue, I've done it on gentoo and am running it right now on my systems and am willing to keep it up-to-date for my distro. Maybe not entirely generic or perfect, but it makes a working system and that's what I am building, a very specific kind of distro that you either love or just don't care about.
>>
>>110011946
>The system itself cannot use half the standard command line tools to interact with ZFS pools/datasets
Idk what you're even talking about here, either there are some mysterious tools I'm unaware of or my zfs progs are just working magically for some reason even though they shouldn't. I honestly don't know, maybe I am ignorant then.

>Zorin vs Mint
ZorinOS uses a better/modern desktop environment which supports stuff like HDR, VRR, multiple monitors with different refresh rates, etc. Mint is stuck on 2016 tech, so using it would be like going back to Windows 7 or 8 (in a bad way). Mint is a distro for contrarians who want to use Ubuntu while hating Ubuntu (Mint removes Snap package support, for example). It's kind of like hating Windows and Microsoft, but still opting to use Windows Ameliorated instead of switching to a different OS.
>CachyOS
CachyOS differs from both of them by getting faster updates. Mint and Zorin are still stuck on Ubuntu 24 as a base, meaning almost all your system packages are from 2024 and you're missing the past 3 years of improvements. CachyOS system packages, including desktop environments and drivers, are updated on a monthly basis. This also means CachyOS doesn't need to heavily rely on stuff like Flatpak, Snap or Appimage since Arch will package the latest versions of software into their repository. On Zorin/Mint you're getting packages from Ubuntu LTS, so if you want to install the latest version of your preferred office suite (for example) you'd need to use Flatpak or Appimage.

I come from windows 10 and I want to use Cachy OS. What should I know and what popular programs I can't use? I assume something like Photoshop doesn't work, or can I install an older version?
>>
>>110011968
>>110011986
Bottom-up thinking (i.e. autism). You're bootstrapping an arbitrary system from the ground up and are seeing how far its functionality extends. Of course within the confines of its own arbitrary bubble and to the extent of its inherent capabilities it "works perfectly". The problem is that in the wider context of the Linux world, saying things like "my own Linux distro with first-class ZFS support" implies an entirely different set of goals, which can come across as a particularly infuriating mix of ignorance and arrogance.
>>
>>110012072
>Photoshop
Save yourself the headache and use Photopea like most people do these days.

Realized the guy I had put my PC together (I fucked up the cpu pins and took it in to be salvaged, got him to install the OS while I had it there) formatted my 1TB hdd in ntfs. Wouldn't be too much of an issue if it weren't fucky with permissions and Proton for Steam installs. My SSD is in ext4 and I have a couple games installed there that work fine.

Would I be better off uploading my entire hdd directory to a backup and reformatting the entire drive, or slowly partioning the empty space to ext4 and transferring over? What issues could happen with both options I guess is what I wanna know lol.
>>
>>110011858
How are you supposed to be able to boot the kernel if /boot is encrypted? Does zfsbootmenu unlock the drive?
>>
>>110013249
Yes, ZFSBootMenu runs ZFS itself and works that way. It unlocks and imports the pool, then lists the options within the pool (boot, snapshots, rollback any snapshot, etc). That's why it's so cool.
>>
>>110011946
>>110012130
You make no sense. Any distro can support zfs easily.
>>
>>110013258
Does zfsbootmenu use a copy of the kernel to load its bootloader or something?
>>
>>110013277
ZFSBootMenu is a very small linux thing on its own, that's why it's able to do what it does. With my distro, yes it will use the same kernel because I setup the package that way, it depends on my linux kernel package.
>>
>>110013262
Like I said - autism.
Being able to install ZFS on any Linux distro != ZFS behaving and being treated as a first class citizen in the Linux ecosystem.
>>

>>
>>110012558
It's apparently coming to KDE (or maybe GNOME) soon. The reason it doesn't have this feature is because it's easier to just move the window into a window tile (or use a keyboard shortcut), rather than first moving it into a tile picker dock and then into a tile.
On KDE "Option+T" brings up your tile editor which you can customize. Then to move a window into a tile you hold Option, then use your left mouse button to grab the window, then hold shift and then move the window into a tile and release your buttons there. Only problem here is that KDE doesn't allow you to remove the "hold shift" requirement to tile windows. You cannot just hold your Option key (meta key, windows key, menu key, or whatever you call it). Option just allows you to tile left and right or maximize, but not tile windows into the custom tiling grid.

So go with KDE for now and don't change the ugly defaults, you'll just make them uglier.

KDE Plasma

>>110013746
"Plasma" is the new name for the KDE desktop environment. It used to just be called "KDE", but then the KDE project rebranded itself when KDE 5 was released. People still refer to the desktop as "KDE" instead of "Plasma" since the rebranding is somewhat recent.

>>110013975
>what gnome tries to be
They're trying to be macOS or Android, or some kind of a hybrid of those two. They're making a simplified UI for "the modern audience" who are mainly familiar with phone UIs or macs.

>>110014015
>Is it the typical Linux distribution, software, environment... That everyone with common sense can agree it's bad except terminally ill online tech cultists.
People are just passionate about hating GNOME because a lot of people working on the GNOME project are obnoxious as fuck. It's not that bad of a DE. It's the 2nd best "general use" desktop environment after KDE. Although a big reason for that is all the corporate backing it gets, as other DEs (aside from KDE) don't have nearly as many resources or popularity.
