So I'm installing Cachy os, limine and I tried to use veracrypt but it seems it doesn't support Linux and there is already and encryption method for Linux. I selected the encrypt option with the root partition but because I haven't encrypted my boot partition it gives me a warning. I don't see an option to encrypt the boot partition anyways.

I don't want to leave any security measures behind, should I encrypt the boot?
>>
>>110017278
Your boot can be encrypted but your EFI can't be encrypted . You'll also have to add extra flags / hooks to the initramfs.
Personally my concern is device theft over infiltration so the system I have with drive encryption leaves boot encrypted. Which also lets me use a keyfile for decryption
>>
>>110017278
Where did you get the idea for VeraCrypt? Like do you want to share a VeraCrypt volume with Windows?
>boot partition
If you mean EFI system partition, it cannot be encrypted as the firmware has to be able to read it. It has to be VFAT and that's that, that's the spec.
IMO it's all schizo stuff that makes your boot process more fragile.

Veracrypt is not necessary, Linux has native support for dm-crypt/LUKS which you should use instead (this is what will be used if you tick encryption in the cachy installer).
The /boot does not need to be encrypted, but if you want to be safer from evil maid attacks you need to set up secure boot and signed boot images. This is not a problem if your threat model does not assume you will have someone swap out your boot image with a malicious one while you're not looking, ie. if you just want encryption in case the device is stolen, it doesn't matter.

I personally do use a signed boot image, and even have TPM decryption set up so I don't have to insert my enormous password every boot.
While I don't use it, enabling a PIN for TPM decryption would be even smarter, and I would use it on a mobile device like a laptop. Much shorter than the usual password, but no less secure due to how TPM hardware works.

not him and haven't messed with that, but considering it's keyboard-related maybe it's intending to set that up during initramfs, since that will be the earliest place you can use a keyboard, so like it was just waiting for you to rebuild the initramfs to apply those new settings to it

>>110018914
Limine is fine, I'm using it right now with the mentioned setup. I used to use systemd-boot but wanted Limine's snapper integration.
Any bootloader should be able to do this, though only Grub supports an encrypted /boot (separated from the EFI partition). I see this as pointless though, since ultimately SOMETHING must be unencrypted for the firmware to boot the system, and in that particular scenario someone could just swap out your bootloader instead of your boot image.

Install the system with encryption enabled, that's the only thing that must be done at install time. If you want secure boot set up, look into sbctl post-install, the process is incredibly simple these days as long as you don't have retard hardware.
If you want TPM decryption all you have to do is cryptenroll a key into the TPM after secure boot is working, bound to PCR7 (at a minimum, I also bind to a blank PCR15, and there are other PCRs that may be useful also) to assert the legitimacy of the secure boot chain, optionally adding a PIN when you do.

What do you actually want to achieve? I can give more detailed steps or information if you want, but you need to know what you want.
>>
>>110018926
why then, madam, is it laggy when running sway on virtualbox but i3 works fine? hmm?
>>
>>110018914
Only grub supports boot encryption but the ESP still has to be unencrypted. One caveat is that grub can take a LONG time (like 20 seconds) to decrypt the system unless you weaken the key (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GRUB/Tips_and_tricks#Speeding_up_LUKS_decryption_in_GRUB)
>>
>>110018951
Because virtualbox can't into 3D acceleration. Wayland works better on real hardware than X. The desktop is so smooth with my nvidia card now while it was a choppy mess on X

I don't want a simple encryption only for stealing laptops junkie, I want to deal with hackers or experienced disruptors. I live in shithole country and I don't want to risk it. I don't want to go schizo mode either but I'm doing a new clean installation do I want to do things right.

The thing is that it is the first time I use Cachy os and I'm finding out knew concepts I didn't know about. I'm not tech illiterate either, I've used Linux before, but not much. I come from windows 10.
>>
>>110019046
Nobody will be able to decrypt a stolen laptop even with an unencrypted boot partition. The danger of an unencrypted boot or esp is that an attacker could switch out the bootloader and sniff out your decryption password as you enter it. Secure boot prevents this.
>>
>>110019046
If you want a very robust solution, install cachy using encryption, then setup secure boot with sbctl.
Install systemd-ukify, make sure that `ENABLE_VERIFICATION=yes`, `ENABLE_ENROLL_LIMINE_CONFIG=yes`, and `ENABLE_UKI=yes` are enabled in the /etc/default/limine config (make sure to look this all up).
This should result in the limine-mkinitcpio-hook auto signing the limine boot image as well as the UKI, and the limine config including hashes of all the files it references (you need to manually add the b2sum for the splash image one time, find info on the secure boot page on the cachyos wiki).

If you want to simplify decryption, use cryptenroll WITH a PIN, make sure to bind to appropriate PCRs as I stated before.

If you have a real threat and want to be hyper autistic, you can separate the LUKS header from the partition and store it on a USB device or something, meaning you'd require that to be able to decrypt the system. Note that if the header is ever lost or damaged, NOTHING will ever decrypt that system. You could also store the /boot partition itself separately if you really wanted.
I would consider this far too autistic to be worth the trouble, however. Just setup secure boot, and if you ever think your device has been compromised, move the disk into a new device, wipe the /boot, decrypt the main partition in the cachy installer using cachy-chroot, then rewrite the bootloader.

Eventually you will realize you are not special enough to care about more than a regular system with a TPM PIN though.

Doesn't hurt to try out bazzite I guess if you're allergic to the command line. I hear it's based on fedora and has all the 5 minutes of setup baked in. I'm a fedoratard myself though so I'm biased. The whole ass debian line never worked for me.

Tonight I'm installing my own distro to my thinkpad. I have the basics down, even optional support for nouveau / amdgpu / radeonsi / mesa. No fancy GPU support yet though such as vulkan because I've avoided LLVM as a dependency for my own sanity, I can always add that later if this thing is proven usable.

There's no such thing as a "folder checksum". It's a thing made up by 7zip devs.
You can do a checksum on all files in a folder if you want, then derive a new checksum from the combination of all those. That's basically what 7zip does under the hood.
There's a few tools like 7zz, rhash and hashdeep that do something similar. But everyone just does "sha256sum *" since sha256sum is built into every distro.

Officially they support jumping up to two versions. The one time I tried that it wrecked my install so it's been single increments for me since then. IIRC it was 30 to 32 but I can't really remember.

I've heard of a guy upgrading in single steps from Fedora 8 to 40 without issues so it should work in theory. One thing to watch is that a lot of mirrors don't host old software versions any more so you could get paired to some slow mirror that takes forever.

Realistically, yes. There isn't a more complete and featured desktop than KDE.
If you want something specific though, like wiling management, maybe not.

A big advantage of KDE right now is it's assumed default status. Similar to how webshitters only test websites on chrome, many people developing tools for the Linux desktop make sure it works on KDE first and foremost.

Hello anons
I recently bought a second hand T420 to use for my utilities and work. I've been meaning to switch to Linux for a while and thought this would be a great way to start it
I have no clue on what distributor to go with and since the topic has been discussed in this thread with certain distos, I wanted to ask if anyone might have a more weighted idea on this specific laptop.

I use this device for classes, movies, drawing (I use krita mainly) and writing - I occassionally game with Dwarf Fortess and Morrowind as light weight "just in case" games in case I'm away from home for a while or my desktop is unavailable. Thank you for those who are interested in helping me

I have never understood the kernel compiling meme. It only takes a long time if you're compiling it on a 15 year old thinkpad, in which case yeah don't fucking use the from-source distro, or do I guess since they have an official binhost now, just don't do it from source.
On any sort of normal computer it taked 5-10 minutes nowadays.
The real problem is if you want to compile chromium or LLVM. But in reality you just do updates overnight and it doesn't really matter in practice. At least bringing up chromium compilation makes more sense than the kernel though.

Anyway, Void actually works fine despite being trannyware, Gentoo is fine and you can use the binhost if you want, Artix is literally fine if you're not brigading their forums (for fuck's sake how hard is it to just use linux as an OS rather than as social media), and Guix is fine too if you're autistic and use nonguix.

IMO there's three ways to write software right now, in order of speed
>fully handcrafted artisanal
>AI assisted as tooling, human reviewed
>fully vibeslopped in a few prompts
Used to be only the first one could really be of any quality, but if you're using an AI from 2026 then the top two are both acceptable really IMO.

The main thing to watch out for is when someone just suddenly makes an entire piece of software (or a bunch of features) out of nowhere in 1-2 days. That definitely means it's pure AI code with no human quality control. If they took several months to write all that shit, it definitely means there was a bunch of human effort to make sure it was nice and clean and worked, and the LLM was used as a tool rather than given free reign to slop out whatever.
