FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers

Same link, select Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

It's even more baffling because in Windows 7 it was entirely OK. Everything app was better but I honestly didn't feel the need to replace it until 10 went absolutely FUBAR and gave web bing results and just missing entirely what I'm actually typing in.
Were they just THAT desperate to shove bing in everyone's face?

In this economy? Funny. I'm doing this just so he leaves me be and just to test out how a Tiny11 ISO fares. It had Win10 20H2 on it so it needed a format either way, if not 10 LTSC then 11. It's an officially unsupported machine so it's another fun thing to test.

hey lads, been enjoying my new win10 iot LTSC install since i overhauled my rig two months ago.
But one thing irks me, i'm no longer able to connect my phone to transfer images and other files to the PC.
Is this some "feature" of one of the third party programs i ran after install, like Privacy.sexy, or does this version of win10 restrict something like that unlike the public version?

Is it really still worth sticking with Win10? I've got a Dell xps 15 9560 which has an old outdated version of win11 on it so I was going to do a fresh install. Never noticed any major issues with Win11 over Win10.
>>
>>110101643

worth implies you give something up for it, the only thing exclusive to win11 that seems useful is wsl2, and at that point you can just install a linux partition instead
>>
>>110101643
Even with ESU you're only getting a few years of additional security updates to Win10. After that you probably want/need to go to 11 or something else.
Unless something has changed since last I looked.
>>
>>110102126
October 2028 is the final update that GAC 10 will ever get, after that you'll need to use IoT LTSC 2021 to stay on 10 until 2032. But by then the probably best version of 11 (IoT LTSC 2027) will be something that's actually worth changing to.

I asked once in a previous /fwt/, but didn't get an answer. If I was going to install 10 LTSC on a USB 3.0 flash drive, should I go with 64 or 128 GB? The only thing I'll be using it for is updating my Steam and GOG backups on a external hard drive.

Portable windows installs on external USB devices haven't been officially supported since Windows 8.1.
Unofficially, you could probably still force it to work. 64Gb would technically be enough, but you should probably go with 128gb.

I don't understand your use case though, why do you need to update your Steam and GOG backups using a windows-to-go USB drive?

https://github.com/KhangHLe/glazewm
lol turns out there's been a fork of GlazeWM that had a bunch of fixes and improvements added (including built-in autodirection) and it's so much better now. Only needed to apply the per-monitor offsets for my personal use case and that's that.
It's really annoying that the main project is unmaintained and there's like at least four separate forks with different changes that are incompatible with each other, with the other two options being Komorebi with it's asinine licensing and Astur that is vibecoded and underbaked in many regards. Glaze is still the best i3-style TWM for Windows that I can find, but I have to manually apply patches from other people and build it myself.

Online KMS needs a renewal task installed so it lasts more than 180 days and doesn't work offline, so at that point HWID is better unless you change your hardware often
KMS4k doesn't persist between features upgrades
>>
>>110107887
Nothing's wrong with it overall but it isn't as ironclad as HWID is ie how it's disabled by feature updates. If you're using KMS activation these days you're using KMS4k through TSforge.
>>
>>110107887
sorry forgot to say for windows 10
>>
>>110107887
Nothing. I always use it. I don't even have a task to automate it, all you have to do is just run the activator twice a year. If you ever forget to do so, you'll see the watermark on the corner, and once run again, it'll go away. I also prefer to just werk offline, so.
>>
>>110106418
You'll be fine a few more years, my friend still plays MHW on W10 and it works fine despite it "dropping" support.
As for the driver stuff, well if a bug happens on a new release you will just have to deal with it, but I honestly think someone will randomly backport drivers as W11/10 are the same dogshit kernel.
>>
>>110107539
I have a Thinkpad T460. I don't want to partition the SATA drive, even though it can accommodate it, and I can't use the WWAN slot for a second drive. That leaves me with either the USB ports or the SD card slot. I'm well aware there's better solutions for my needs, but until GOG releases a Linux native port of Galaxy, I'm going with this option. At least I can have Windows to dual boot.
>>
>>110110730
I still don't understand the use case.
You have Linux installed on the T460 internal drive, but you need a Windows install... for backups?
I'm confused how backups would require windows.

I want to keep the file structure for in case my Windows 7 PC shits itself. My use case is retarded as is, and I just want another fucking drive to install a copy of 10. The recommendation for 128 GB is good enough. Unless you know how I can get Galaxy to update to 2.1 and solve a 'GetSystemTimePreciseAsFileTime' error on Steam for Windows 7 with VxKex-Next.

I still don't know how Windows hasn't solved file search for over 40 years, it shouldn't take over a minute to search recursively through a few folders.
Meanwhile on Linux I can just go to my home directory, search for the name of a game's save file (which is a few subfolders down), then get the result in a few seconds.
I'm not aware how file search works, but why the fuck does windows struggle at basic shit like this?
>>
>>110121882
Because the indexer and the GUI suck. Voidtools' Everything is much better, and what it uses to be so good is NTFS' MFT, a Windows specific feature. That and a Win32 UI that's lightweight and fast.

And it's not like XP's/7's search was anyehere close to Everything. It was also shit, but not as shit as 10/11.

Just finally upgraded from a (zero updates) win10 2023 ltsc I also got from here to the latest win11 pro.
It's pretty fine out of the box, expected something horrible not going to lie.
Didn't even debloat or anything just the rufus settings.

Question. What is the inetpub folder and do I need it? Google has been less than useful. It seems to be for something call IIS.
Same question for the "windows.old" folder.

Thanks.
>>
>>110136414
it's a funny story because people did freak out about the inetpub folder when Microsoft introduced it even if you didn't have a server. turns out it's there as a security measure so you shouldn't remove it.

as for the windows.old, it's got files from your previous installation in case you want to rollback, i believe Windows gives you a limited time to rollback, after that the windows.old gets removed, or you can remove it manually or with the built-in cleanup tool

Remember to always disable driver updates with windows update via the group policy editor, then you can keep updating windows safely without it messing your existing drivers. Your best bet now, is to just wipe the drivers from the driver store and device manager and just reinstall them again manually.

Bros, I have an emergency

I tried starting up the PC and Windows doesn't even run. At first there was only a black screen after the manufacturer's logo showed up, and now it's remained a blue screen

There doesn't seem to be anything I can do through the BIOS, and I tried using an USB with a Windows 10 installation, but it crashes instantly

Is there anything else I can do? This shit happened after a power outage

Hey I'm trying to fix a consistently lagging/unresponsive folder. It's only 4GB big and has 271 files, 129 of which are videos and the remainder a mix text, psd and ogg files. Scrolling through the folder is extremely slow. I tried different views and sorting options in explorer, clearing thumbnails' cache, disabling thumbnails altogether and changing the "optimize this folder for:" option (folder's properties>customize) from "video" to "general items", all in vain. The only thing that works is renaming every file from Japanese to Latin characters, but I have no desire to butcher titles with romaji considering that I can actually read them as is. Indexing is disabled and system locale is set to Japanese. Any idea on how to fix it?

Anybody here have any experience with dual booting? I have a NVME SSD that I use for my Windows 11 Install, it's a local account, no bitlocker encryption, and no fast boot. I also have another Sata SSD and I thought I could use it to experiment with Linux, have some fun, and also play pirated games and avoid pozzing up my main OS and putting my data at risk. Can a virus from another OS hop onto my other drives and cause issues? Can installing linux cause issues to windows in general with updates? I don't really care if my linux install gets messed up, primarily worried about it touching my Windows install.

my mans, viruses can perform their duties just fine on linux with wine, being on linux means shit
especially without an encrypted windows installation, a virus can easily mount your NVME and modify windows binaries and there'll be no windows defender or whatever running to stop it

linux people are super careful about not breaking existing windows installations and in my memory no problems surfaced recently
it's usually windows who breaks linux

It was a feature ever since the taskbar was introduced in Windows 95. Then with Win11 they nuked that entire codebase and made a new taskbar with missing features, and only now they're bringing it back, and even then it's half-assed as auto-hide only works when the taskbar is at the bottom, you can't expand it to be multi-row and the DeskBands are still missing.

At this point running RetroBar that hides the OS taskbar and shows it's own gives you a more authentic Windows experience than what Bharatsoft ships it with.
>>
I just realized Bharatsoft added a simple little optimization. ShellExperienceHost.exe is the process responsible for the calendar and notification (Win+N) pop-up, and it auto-suspends whenever it's not activated. It still sits in RAM, or perhaps it gets offloaded to disk, but it doesn't use any CPU cycles when not needed. Clever.

Microsoft treats LTS like a meme, literally zero testing or effort put into it, just some internet vibe coding security and even often times half-baked feature patches to an old build and praying it works. I tried out having it on the left or on top, but it always feels weird and like the bottom of my screen is too empty and missing something. If it's on the left it feels like the screen and opened programs are off-center, and if it's on top if you maximize the program it feels clunky to interact with taskbar immediatly next to minimize/maximize/close buttons or browser tabs. Microsoft just knows best, I kneel and apologize for doubting the genius of Bill Gates.

I tried to back up my windows 10 installation the other day with the built in backup and restore tool. It seems to have failed because during the backup the computer detected bad clusters on the disk, subsequently event log is continuously logging hundreds of event id 7 (This device... has a bad block). See attached. It's still bootable and working well (i am posting from the system right now)
Is there any way to recover from this? I'd like to still have a full image backup and restore to another disk if possible. Also crystal disk info is reporting the disk as healthy. Its an ssd. I have a feeling running chkdsk at this point will probably kill it for good. Should I boot into linux and try to take a image backup that way, or are there any things you guys recommend?

hello, is there ever a need to factory reset a pc with ssd, to keep it running as best as possible?
i remember as a kid with ye olde hhd i was told to do it once a year, but is it necessary with a ssd?
>>
>>110165946
You never needed to do a clean install every year, but for a lot of people including myself, it's a good way to get rid of garbage you don't use anymore, as you'll only re-install stuff you still actively use

that was probably mostly it, will keep in mind

I'm still troubleshooting this, but I think I've discovered one of the issues responsible for my high CPU temps as of late is that after I either run an intensive search across hundreds of gigabytes of folders/files in the Windows Explorer folder viewer, AND/OR after opening 5-6 videos at once in MPC-HC, my CPU temps remain in a 70-80c range even after I shut the folder windows and close out MPC-HC, even 10+ minutes after both of those are closed

Killing or restarting the Explorer.exe process in the task manager brings the temps back down, but that also means all my windows and open files in notepad and whatever get re-arranged in the taskbar, and while that seems like not a big deal, I have like 50 different notepad docs open and it actually is a pain in the ass to re-sort those after every large scale search I preform

Anybody have an idea of what I can to do fix this or what's going on here? The obvious conclusion is that maybe after I shut the window for the search, Windows is actually still running the search in the background for some reason. Is there something I can to do force that to stop if that's what's going on, without shutting the entire Explorer.exe process?

I'm on Windows 11

Total Commander. But it truly becomes good once you readjust to use it with the keyboard. That, and get into configuring it.

Do any of you have a suggestion for one that still has image/video thumbnail previews, and can be set up in such a way that if a folder has my search term in it's folder name, that all of it's contents will also show up in the search results even if none of those files have the search term in their filenames?

Ideally I want to be able to enable/disable that last feature via something I can include in the search string

>Total Commander
I use this as a copying utility, since it handles files/folders with path lengths and filename lengths that go past window's normal limits well, which teracopy etc sometimes struggles with; but I can't imagine using it for general folder/file viewing. Also it's fucking stupid how you have to jump through like 5 hoops to get it to preserve the created, modified etc dates of files when copying them, and in fact you have to set that in MULTIPLE locations, even if you check the box that makes it LOOK like it'll do that, you then have to go into the config file and do extra shit on top of that

Fucking insane, I backed up 20tb+ of data and lost most of their date metadata as a result of that shit, I'm gonna have to re-copy everything eventually and I have no fucking clue how I'll handle that since a bunch of the files I've edited or renamed since anyways

Isn't windows' built-in robocopy enough? Personally I never needed more.
>>
>>110167998
Yeah robocopy is sick. It's pretty much all I use if I need to move tons of shit around.

It's what it's meant for and it's really comfy. It's just that it has a learning curve to get comfy with it.

The screenshots are a good preview of what it can do. The built-in manual has plenty of info as well. Plug-ins do a lot to make it do just about everything you want it to do.

LTSC 21H2 works the same in 2026 as it did in 2021 and it will still work the same in 2032. It is repeatably reliable. A known quantity.
Meanwhile GAC works today, breaks tomorrow, works next month, breaks next year

Props to MS they actually fixed the start menu, I made it so that only my pinned apps and app folders show up, and hid the All list completely, and disabled any recommendations/suggestions/ads as well as online/bing search. Only big issues that are still bugging me is Photos app refusing to remember if you collapse the sidebar, as well as Microsoft Edge's updates being decoupled from Microsoft Store or Windows Update. Would be really good if they make it so that you can just check for update in settings and it does Edge, Store, Redistributables, everything.

That's not how computers work. If you used LTSC 2021 in a vacuum, and installed literally nothing on it except apps stuck in time that last recieved updates around time of november 2021 or whenever LTSC 2021 released, then you'd have a close to perfectly reliable/stable tried experience. In reality LTSC constantly retrieves backported fixes and often times features too, like how updates would show teams icon in taskbar or download Outlook app or change the weird new About page in W10 Settings, but it'll be 100% vibe coded and untested to work on that release. You are also running a outdated kernel and setup that not a single other software/hardware tests for, so you are recieving for example NVIDIA drivers built for featureset and bugs of GAC October 2026 25H2/26H2 and using them in an untested environment in 21H2 that's at this point over 5 years of changes and oddities. While computers are so complex that updoots often times just break shit in games like GTA SA specific cars just disappearing after updoots, so imagine how many oddities LTSC faces that nobody knows about because it's userbase and testers are like 100K people compared to 1.5 BILLION people on GAC. Here's an interesting read if you want.

LTSC 21H2 works the same in 2026 as it did in 2021. No more and no less.

I will trust the knowledge of 100k autists using the same build since 2021, over the knowledge of 1.5 billion NPCs using the same build since September 2026.

The percentage of high IQ autists interested in stuff will always be bigger in the GAC pool just by huge pop disparity. Realistically most LTSC users are boomers with lead brain damage, random companies with one autistic IT guy managing them who just puts them on so that old farts working there can use the one program they need without any change, or random indonesian trannies on a vietnamese crop harvesting imageboard that have OCD and autism and reinstall their PC every month and only use it for porn games and genshin impact that they play in their tiny shack with a metal "roof" that gives them a sun stroke and turns them into barely functioning vegetables.

most intelligent LTS-GAWD

actually you know, for a special person like you that's a bit on the slower side, a slower special branch like LTS fits just right. have fun anon, you just go on your own pace, the world is scary and not everyone can adapt to things at the same pace and learn at the same pace. Just like Special Education exists, LTSC has too as well. You'll always be mommy's special little boy
