I'm better at programming than my manager, he's mostly sysadmin with a bit of coding (we are a small company)Asked for a raise and he would accept it but the big boss is a bitch and said no sorry economy is bad. The place is really chill, no need to LLM max and we go golfing every week. Should I change jobs? Help me anons
>>110121966I do all of that. At 39, I'm near the fittest I've ever been in my life. I was a bit fitter two summers ago because I was running a lot more, before I started getting knee pain.

After 25yr you are not going to have friends. College is long over, you likely did your Masters online and your friends are long removed from the city you were in a decade ago.
Anyone take a year or longer sabbatical before? I can afford it, have $1.5MM saved up, but I'm worried that it'll be hard to get another job that isn't complete shit in this market. Currently getting paid $300K remote to coast in a toxic job with retard coworkers but I expect to get laid off sometime next year because of bad company performance

>>110122382I had some adult friends after college. As in: met them in my mid-20s, completely independent of anyone I ever knew beforehand. The problem was I met them at a bar and the entire nature of our friend group was presence at that bar.
>>110122258They absolutely are.
>>110122428Not enough money anon you need at least 5million for what you are describing and another 20 million on top of that to retire without working.

I can't stand how little money I make, my job sucks and I can't find anything better because I don't have 69 years of experience, my stack at work is outdated and my personal projects don't count as having experience with the billionth new bullshit data tool. I make more money tutoring highschoolers and cleaning construction sites on weekends than I do at my day job. Even if I got one of those "better" more interesting jobs with 500+ applications in 1 hour the money is still shit, it's impossible to build any wealth saving even 1000e a month. >>110123325Why not focus on your more lucrative side gigs instead of tech until something changes?
>>110123466Because I have wanted to work in tech since I was 9 years old, and the idealized form of the job itself that I have in my head is at least is very interesting and challenging. I'm afraid if I leave now I'll never be let back in, I can't even find another job to move to now let alone if I had a 1-2 year career gap. But I'm on the verge of quitting anyway and just doing computer stuff as a hobby.

>>110124930>my parents are wealthy>I have enough money to do whatever I wantoh wow what a surpriseIt's almost like you can just fuck around in life and still have money as long as your parents are rich.Anyway, you're not successful unless you have more money than your parents. You're more of a generational disappointment and sliding down the social ladder rather than up. That's the opposite of success. That's a failure.Otherwise, everybody could just comare themselves to hobos, and say they're successful because they're not homeless. Success is relative to where you started out from. Sliding back isn't success.
>>110125212If your parents weren’t rich despite growing up in the everything bull run where a 1200 SAT got accepted to Harvard they probably weren’t very smart and that’s very heritable. My condolences.
>>110125270I have more money than both my parents put together. I consider myself successfulSuccess is personal, and relative to where to started out from. Take like Barron Trump. And imagine Barron gets a job, and makes like slightly above the median salary. Is Barron Trump successful? I'd say he definitely isn't. I'd argue he fell down the wealth ladder off a cliff. That's a hypothetical, though. Barron will get carried by his dad's money his entire life, and will never have to work a median salary job.

Left my job a month ago and most of the way done raising a preseed round already. Market is white hot but I can tell it would be really hard if you didn't have a serious resume. I definitely cannot imagine staying at a big co writing code no matter what the pay is, but being a slop cannoneer is a lot more fun making your own product at least so far. If I wasn't doing this, I'd try to just do solo game dev, I also find that quite nice with LLMs since you can always do big context switches from writing the game logic to sound, art, animation, keeps it interesting.
how many different companies did you guys have to interview in order to get your last job?apart from the one i'm pretty sure i aced, i think i'm coming up to 15 or so, i'd say it was a 50/50 split of rejections between HR and technical stages
