>Sony Japan has discontinued its last remaining UHD Blu-ray player, UBP-X700/K, seemingly marking the company's exit.

>The news comes via Japanese blog Kunkoku, which happens to also be a Sony retailer. Sales are officially ending in Japan today, October 22.

>- "Sony ends shipments of Ultra HD Blu-ray player UBP-X700/K. Following the end of Blu-ray recorder sales and the announcement that PlayStation game disc production will cease, the PS5 will be Sony's only UHD Blu-ray player in Japan," writes Kunkoku (translated).

>Sony Japan has confirmed the same on its online store, where the UBP-X700/K is prominently listed in red as "在庫切れで、次回入荷のない商品です" ("Out of stock. This item will not be restocked"). There is still no press release or global confirmation, but Kunkoku notes that no successor or replacement has been announced.

>End of an era
>UBP-X700/K, released in May 2025, was Sony's last remaining standalone UHD Blu-ray player, following the discontinuation of UBP-X800M2 more than a year ago.

>This leaves PlayStation 5 as Sony's only remaining UHD Blu-ray player, but it is first and foremost a game console and it does not support Dolby Vision. PlayStation will also soon
stop releasing new games on optical discs, leading many to believe that PlayStation 6 will abandon the optical disc drive. The end of an era.

>Sony had already withdrawn from the standalone CD and SACD player markets. In February, it announced that it would exit the Blu-ray recorder market. It will continue to sell one standard Blu-ray player and one DVD player.

>What happens now?
>Sony is a Japanese company, and decisions affecting its Japanese lineup typically precede global changes. UBP-X700/K is not yet officially listed as discontinued in the US, Europe or elsewhere, so stock seemingly remain available in those markets, but you may need to act fast.

>Sony's exit leaves Panasonic as the only major electronics brand still selling UHD Blu-ray players, although we are seeing a
wave of mostly Chinese brands launching players.

>Still, these brands are unlikely to move the needle much. Sony was one of the key developers of Blu-ray and a major force behind UHD Blu-ray. The Japanese company's exit must be regarded as a major blow to the optical disc market as a whole.

Scalper chads... time to stockpile UHD Blu-ray players.

im sure that'll look fantastic on your SDR 1440p screen

>Sony committing systematic suicide
Remind me again why should I give a shit?
>>
>>110133399
panasonic is still making them
>>
The original Sony company has long quit any physical market, they became a hedge fund that manages IP catalogues.

I think those brands still producing Sony devices are like Nokia still producing stuff.
>>
>>110134657
That's whats Philips does, nowadays all Philips products outside of professional medical equipment, toothbrushes, epilators and shavers are made under licence.
>>
>>110133866
normally when a company is being killed because of bad leadership vision I care if I use their products because it means they'll be bought up by some trash corpo that will milk every IP and destroy everything

but Sony has already been doing that all by themselves, on top of these awful decisions. They do have stuff I like, but all of it has enshittified to hell, so I just cannot help but cheer for their demise and hope that whoever gets all the goodies afterwards treats them better (it won't happen)
>>
>>110134864
Yeah agree, that's exactly my point. They have one or two good products (if you can ignore a lot of their bullshit) but they're doing this to themselves. You want to cut off literally every single business segment you have while your core business is breaking off under your fat ass because you've mistreated people that fucking badly? Go ahead, see if I give a shit. Like you say what the fuck are they threatening? That Ubisoft will buy up the remains and make it worse?

Recently I tried to find it out, but I found nothing:
Is there ACTUALLY a way to buy digital movies? Like buy and own them?
I haven't found anything.
So if this society gets rid of optical media, then there is no way of ever owning movies anymore. Nice.
>>
>>110135111
(((They))) need physical media dead. It's easier to memoryhole digital media.
>>110135133
No. You'll own nothing and will be happy.
>>
>>110135133
You rent them like people used to do at the Blockbuster

Underrated

>>110135133
there are services like Kaleidescape for rich people with yachts, but everything is encrypted and proprietary.
>>
>>110135133
If you buy a physical Blu-ray isn't the data on the disk yours?
>>
>>110135519
Yes, but if everyone of those shitty companies is getting rid of blu-ray now, then there is no more optical media left
>>
You just reminded me that I still have a blue ray drive but haven't plugged it into my desktop in about ten years. Maybe one day there will be a movie worth watching.
>>
So should i buy one just in case, or wait until i ma need one in the future?

How are the sony ones compared to the competition?
>>
>>110135659
It depends on which special snowflake HDR format you want.
>>
They will exit smartphones soon, already exited TV... is Sony dead?
>>
>>110135789
sony alpha ringing any bells to you?
>>
>>110135789
>is Sony dead?
On paper not yet, practically yes. It's a Japanese company, they are literally not capable of the type of turnaround Sony would need to save them from the wall they're heading towards.
>>
>>110133370
Dumb move considering the 4k blu-ray market has started growing again.
>>
>>110135911
its very smart considering sony loses money on every physical product sold, but not for digital

their cost to operate is about to go way down
>>
>>110135911
I doubt it'll exist beyond a small enthusiast market, a few specialist players can build BD players in partnership with the handful of remaining BD publishers (mostly overpriced special editions with overly elaborate boxes)
Nothing Sony needs to be involved in really.

It's just going to be like the new hi-fi market being smaller serviced by enthusiast companies, hell, maybe this is a good thing, Sony's player is FULL of bloatware, a straight up player with no smart player will be welcome.
>>
>>110135977
Someone still needs to manufacture the laser pickups for the players and only Japanese companies are even capable of doing that. If Sony ends production of those too, then only Panasonic will be left to supply them.
>>
>>110135931
>their cost to operate is about to go way down
Good that'll match the sales decline.
>>
>>110136066
If there's enough demand they can sell the manufacturing for that to another company
>>
>>110135911
The MARKET or number of titles per year? Those are different things.
>>
>>110136111
totals dont matter, only margin

>Is there ACTUALLY a way to buy digital movies? Like buy and own them?
Does iTunes still sell movies?
>>
>>110139003
yes they do. They are presumably still licensed, similar to the way they are on Amazon. Apple themselves would likely be the last to yank the movie you paid for, but often it isn't their decision. It would actually be the decision of the company that holds the license. However, Apple is in the best position to pressure the license holders to leave things along.
>>
>>110139039
See that's the problem.
They tell you you buy them, but you can't just watch them with mpv. It's so stupid

>>110133389
Just an fyi sony blu-ray players the UHD specifically are all shit. I've read so much shit about how they don't even play some 4k uhd discs for whatever reason on most of them even the high end ones they just skip or just wont play. I remember finding this out and I just couldnt understand how they were getting away with producing a product that just doesn't work at all. How the fuck aren't their lawsuits against sony for that kind of thing is beyond me. Now they won't have to worry about it.

The only worthwhile UHD 4k player was 2 panasonic players the ultra high end if you wanted the up-scaling of old dvds and the slight lower end which all play DV.
