/iemg/ Dogma Check
Tired of the hivemind? Here’s your prescribed sanity dose:

>Crinacle is not your priest.
Rankings are a guide, not divine scripture. Your ears > his spreadsheet.

>Harman and JM-1 ≠ perfect.
It’s a preference curve, not a law of physics. Some genres need deviation.

>Chi-Fi isn’t magic.
Great value, yes. Immune to QC issues and hype cycles? Nope.

>Graphs are not sound.
They don’t show staging, dynamics, or fit. Use your ears, not just squigs.

>BA ≠ metallic, DD ≠ perfect.
Implementation matters more than driver type. Always has.

>Meme sets aren’t the whole hobby.
If it’s not shilled 24/7, it might still be good. It's highly encouraged to form an original opinion.

>Disagreeing ≠ cope or deaf.
Let people like what they like without foaming at the mouth.

>Loud posts =/= smart takes.
Confidence without experience is just noise. Show graphs, impressions, or both.

>Cognitive dissonance.
When you're presented with a truth that threatens your entire perception of the world around you, your brain will simply refuse to process it.

This has been your scheduled break from pos groupthink.

The funny thing is none of this is scientific.
>science and engineering
Notice how they have to lump in engineering because building these products is infact electrical engineering. But they're not even doing that. No wonder the Replication Crisis is happening. They can repost papers, but they can't ever replicate them.
>>
Engineering is when you load up 15 DSP filters in foobar2000. Science is when you claim Harman works across all music genres, people and products because there's a German autist who has autism. In the end we're all listening to tunes on a computrer. If this is science then I'm a banana.

>>110154317
Because bounds are retarded. Curves with similar level of preferences have similar relation of bass to treble but different mids. Maybe you could pin down bass and treble and make mids huge instead. That will filter out obviously bright and muddy bullshit. But that's still just a fundamentally stupid idea.
>>
>>110153495
It's a mystery.
>>
>>110154393
Right. I agree, even assuming as true that the one line Harman target is insufficient to predict listening preferences, putting an error bar at every frequency along the Y axis is wrong, because magnitudes matter in relation to other frequencies, not just it's own frequency, in listening to music.

If it were up to me, we should ditch the bound, keep the Harman line, and calculate the rate of change, or curvature, from one range of frequencies to another of the measured headphone or iem, against itself. Characterizing a FR plot with curvature would tell us bright vs dark, which these bounds cannot do.

Although I never read the original Harman paper or the listener article lol.
>>
>>110154287
you eat chicken at a knockoff Ukrainian KFC, though.
>>
>>110154570
This all comes from the retarded idea of trying to appease the highest number of normgroids. Obviously giving descriptors for the FR that you can then choose from is better. And there was that tool recently that searched for similar IEMs, it just doesn't understand the concept of bright and dark.

A fascinating topic. It brings to mind some measurements, I believe for the HD 800S. Taken on different individuals. The very same model could show a 10–15 dB variance in certain frequency ranges, depending on the person. For some of them it was neutral or even warm sounding headpos

That said, it’s reasonable to assume (and, in fact, far more likely) that someone recommending, for instance, a bright-sounding pair of HiFiMAN or Beyerdynamic headphones simply doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Often, this is just a classic case of someone having spent their money on a product and becoming convinced that it’s the absolute best choice. They refuse to to acknowledge idea that having an "itchy ear" after just a few minutes of listening isn't actually normal.

Also ASR is retarded

its a zoomer thing, they do it with literally every product they own and get extremely angry if you don't agree with them. Meanwhile you can find 1k page forums about boomers shitting on whatever speaker/headphone they own and things they did to improve it, like mods or tube amp choices. It's why forums like ASR are pure cancer, because if you don't repeat what amir says you are deaf or uninformed which is just boring like that screenshot from last thread where he wants every headphone to sound identical
>I believe for the HD 800S. Taken on different individuals. The very same model could show a 10–15 dB variance in certain frequency ranges, depending on the person
changes a lot on placement of it and how the vertical height is from most peoples anecdotal experience but tylls graphs showed the same from memory, fun headphone but its pretty bright
it's probably one of the hardest headphones to talk about in general because the second some retard tries it while exclusively listening to lolicore or some trash electronica they flip out, but if it's well recorded classical or something acoustic it's a very different story
i could never use any of the eq's people set up for it, basically all sounded like dog shit in my opinion

File: ss8w vs ss4w.png (3.02 MB, 1900x877)
3.02 MB PNG
I’ve been testing Sovereign Symphony 8W again. The newer version uses a twist braid so it’s comfortable on the ears but long listening still hurts. Maybe I need one with earhooks.

Comparing the SS8W with the SS4W, the 8W is surprisingly brighter/leaner than the 4W. Each cable upgrade is warmer than its predecessor (SS4W is warmer than Sov2w, Sov2w is warmer than Mira etc.), so this is a departure from the norm. However, the 8W does stage wider and deeper than the 4W, and makes the 4W sound claustrophobic in comparison. The 8W’s more extended/smoothed treble helps contribute to its airiness and spaciousness. The 4W’s treble is more forward in that regard.

However, I really much prefer the tonality of the 4W over the 8W. You get a more natural mid timbre and low-end impact with the 4W. With the SS8W you lose too much of the dynamics and low-end definition. 4W is a more V-shaped coloration which is better suited to my prefs. With 8W you’d probably have to run some thick mud sources to bring the low-end back, maybe something like the Riviera Labs or Trafomatic Primavera.

Personally idk if it’s worth the upgrade ($11,000 vs $5,500) over the Sov 4W. I guess if you just want to stagemaxx.

I spent last night trying to compare a dongle with a larger portable amp, but I couldn't reach any clear conclusions. it even seemed to me that dongle had better bass but I tried volume match them to vocals so it might be just vocals pushed back a little. I wish I had even 10% of your hearing ability.

If you want definitive answers for shit like these you should get one of those $80 Chinese couplers. Humans are not reliable. Some dacs don't even measure flat. You'd probably need one of those $50K audioprecision rigs to properly evaluate but if a dac doesn't measure flat a simple loopback cable will catch that too I think.

"OMG, THIS IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF DACS!

With dsd128 Vinyl captures, played through USB audio pro bit perfect mode, the sound stage is holographic, every instrument breathes its own space and transient depth. The special realism is astonishing.

I'm listening through fiio ft1 composite wood driver headphones, it's like reference monitors strapped to my head, lol.

I tried the hifi muse m3 Ultra with Jan tubes, very warm , clean DAC, but the cayin ru7 elevated the smooth analogue bloom to a whole new level.
I was chasing getting free of PCM quantization artifacts and sharp digital cold glare. High bit PCM came close, but dsd128 from vinyl capture broke the barrier and no more glassy piercing siblance, just smooth warm detailed non fatigued bliss.

Adding the 1 bit resistor array of the cayin ru7, into the chain eliminated the last distortion from Delta sigma DAC modulation and over sampling that occurs from splitting the dsd128 steam into segments.
The dsd128 into a
Pure 1 bit steam resistor array is true linear path from vinyl record to the ears. I can hardly believe vinyl can sound this good.

I captured the vinyl into dsd128 with a korg ds-dac-10r dsd capture device with a douk p7 tube phono preamp and rolled nos 60s Sylvania Baldwin tubes into the line RCA of the korg ds-dac-10r. So rich, I cannot go back to PCM."

You have a few methods, all of which will require you to get your own local music files
>syncing between computer host and mobile player
You have a lot of options here. Musicbee has sync support, fobbar2k probably too. Syncthing is also workable. However, all of this does mean that you will be playing files that are on your phone. Handy if you don't have network access but it can be too much storage after a while
>computer host with jellyfin/plex/navidrome/azuracast
Your computer is now the streaming service. Might require messing around with stuff before it works as intended but you don't need to worry about your mobile player's local storage.

nta, but it's meaningless if you're converting from PCM. not even redundant, just absolutely unnecessary and you definitely should not care.

It literally won't play PCM, like all deltasigmas.

>DSD
Imagine being this stupid. DSD adds distortion and can't ever be fixed, it's for braindead people who want 'bigger number better' like PCM over 48khz.

The History of Digital Audio
>sony uses 44/16 pcm for their vhs tape recorders and later CD
>people realize running dac chips at a higher frequency sounds smoother and that 44/16 is a compromise
>sigma-delta chips oversample using 1bit cuz less computationally intensive and lower power in spec sheets, new chips every year
>sacd was going to be 96khz
>pcm chips are on their way out
>because oversampling is close enough to highres, sacd instead uses/develops DSD (direct stream digital) to bypass oversampling in the oversampling chips by having the format be the same 1bit oversampled signal
>MSB pipes pcm into resistors, sells for $3000, nobody else figures this out for 15 years
>people figure out how to pipe 1bit/sigmadelta/DSD into resistors
>>
>>110166333
Pathetic.

Even the cheapest deltasigmas are precise enough for more than 1 bit now.

Only audiophools ever thought that.
It's always been wrong.
>>
>>110166347
There's a reason DVD-audio isn't a thing anymore because nobody gave a shit about 24-bit over 16-bit CD standard, soundwise.
Than you have to ask yourself, "why didn't blu-ray audio albums catch on, then?" Same reason.

If you ask normal people smoother means rolled off treble. But the deaf can't comprehend how treble works and that oversampling gives you more of it, not less.

His argument is to minimize unstable factors and to get used to stable factors. Like, that you have to get used stock tuning just as much as you have to get used to EQ. This is immediately debunked by unplugging headphones and letting speakers play. Now you have two different tunings to get used to. With proper EQ you only need one. Even if you only have one pair of headphones and literally nothing else getting used to bad tuning is still a bad idea, you can literally fry your ears with unequalized treble.
