I have been seen few x264 releases recently that are smaller than x265 releases for same resolution. I see this mainly with 2d animated content but also seen it with some live action stuff as well. If there is lot of stationery visuals with lot of characters talking in a particular position x264 can still be better

First time soldering. Need to desolder these pins, but they won't melt.
>put some flux paste over the area
>heat up iron to 480° C
>put copper wick next pins
>touch flat-headed tip of iron to the base of the pins
>the flux starts burning away but the pins seems completely unchanged

What am I doing wrong? That's not burnt btw its just the flux
>>
>>110172013
Did you apply some solder on the iron before, so there's good contact between the iron and the wick?
The solder on the board could be crappy, you could try adding some fresh solder of your own, especially if you have some that's leaded
Are you actually getting the wick right in there? You can cut the wick to size, this reduces the amount of wick to heat up too

How can I make sure github repos are safe to use on my machine? I'm starting to see more and more projects hosted on github, like the 128 player Halo 3 mod "Project Reclaimer". How do you guys go about learning stuff? Do you try to do things on your own? What is doing things on your own? Do you do them until you bash your head into the wall? Sometimes when I learn a computer algorithm by watching a video or reading about it before I think of it myself I get a little angry and feel like I missed out on an important step of thought. Do you find any shame in just reading everything to comprehend it without doing some of the work yourself?

what am i after if i just want

i'm out of the loop with this stuff, i remember cheap shared hosting where you could do whatever but set it up yourself.

i can live with ez babby mode hosting for a blog, but not if they restrict me to 1 mailbox or something, or my 'free domain' is £200/year after the first year.

is there a web hosting comparison site, or anything?

I got a real stupid one. I've never watched anime (or tv or shows in general) before, but I downloaded one from nyaa and now I like it enough that I want to be a good goy and acquire it legitimately. Where do you actually buy animes? Digitally, I don't care about having a disk or whatever.
Is it even possible these days or is everything on a streaming service? I have not consumed paid televised content ever in my life so my apologies if I sound like a retarded zoomer

Most hosting/server providers will have a cheap tier for web hosting like this. Hetzner, OVH, DigitalOcean etc. Just go to their websites and check what the cheap web hosting tiers offer, those three are a good starting point.
Alternatively you can get a cheap VPS tier. I think the cheapest hetzner web hosting is like $2/month and the cheapest VPS is $5/month, those are approximately the orders of magnitude you'll find in most places, but the advantage of a VPS is you can do anything. The disadvantage is that you have to install everything yourself of course.

For domain names, just use namecheap or something. It tells you the purchase and the renewal price; for most normal domains (including .com etc.) those are going to be nearly identical. Some really meme TLDs have very scammy pricing but just look before you buy.
You can also buy a domain directly through Hetzner and possibly others, but there's generally no reason to do this, and transacting directly with the registrar is always better because it's one fewer party who has control of your domain. So buy from namecheap and just configure your DNS servers to hetzner's for the hosting.

It depends. If it's just learning things to be able to have the knowledge, then reading about them is perfectly fine. Algorithms for example: it's probably not very realistic to expect to be able to reinvent all algorithms that you would ever need all by yourself. The fact that other people came up with them means you can easily use them, and that's good; you just need to know which ones exist and when to use them.
Figuring them out yourself can be a fun puzzle, but it's really just a puzzle, and again it's kind of unrealistic to expect to have the time and ability to reinvent every single algorithm you learn about.

Generally the skill you really want is problem-solving. Learning a lot of existing algorithms, so you have a "toolbox" to apply to problems, helps. General practice in taking problems and coming up with a solution to them is also good; grinding leetcode can be one way to do this (though it's very narrow in its scope of "problems"). Coming up with bespoke algorithms is also good practice, but the more existing algorithms you already know the easier it is to come up with ideas for new ones. So, there's no shame in just learning facts that other people already invented/discovered/formalised, to expand your base of knowledge from which you can draw when the time comes to actually create novel solutions.

Github is not special. How do you make sure any .exe you install is safe on your machine? Usually you just have to take the developer at their word. If it's a big and/or corporate project, you're trusting that the publisher didn't get hacked, AND you're trusting they're not also maliciously hoovering up your data and shit (a trust which is unfortunately often misplaced). If it's a small/"indie" piece of software, you're trusting that again the dev didn't get hacked, and also that the dev isn't actually doing this to try to get viruses on people's computers.
Whether the software is on github or not doesn't change things.

What github does allow you to do is look at the source for the software. If you have AI tokens to burn, you could ask your AI: "hey check this project on github, go through the entire code and audit it for potentially malicious behaviour. check if it's safe to run on my PC." Though to be reliable you should use a good model (especially on larger projects) and it can be expensive to audit an entire project unless you already got a high tier AI sub or your work pays for one.

can someone explain to me why the fuck i need 3 versions of python installed at all times? why can't python 3.14 run 3.12 code? what's so fundamentally different between them that they can't just support stuff written a year ago?
>>
>>110173888
Most of the time you can actually. I don't think they intentionally break things between minor versions. But python is a very large and complicated thing, and any internal change might have subtle consequences to how the code executes, which might create consequences in particularly complicated or unlucky code.
But 99% of the time I'm pretty sure you can run 3.12 code using python 3.14, for example. But not the other way around because they do add new stuff in new versions, so code using the new stuff can't run on old versions. But old code should usually run on new versions.
>>
>>110173888
They removed GIL in 3.13, and surprise, a bunch of old code has broken multi-threading that only works if threads can't run in parallel.

Basically 3.14 can run everything, but it expects certain promises old programs make to actually be kept when they won't be. Because dumbfucks were using multithreading as a time slicing loop.

x264 is simply less easier to fuck up and encode poorly with than x265. Any monkey can use
-crf 18 -preset slower -profile high
with x264 and call it a day whereas x265 has a lot more than can go wrong if you don't understand all the tuning options and other various flags.
>>
>>110173968
I also probably should have mentioned that x264's psychovisuals were tuned and developed/tested around anime and it makes me laugh everytime I think about it, so it makes sense that x264 handles anime very well. One of if not the best H.264 encoders was perfected because people wanted their Bangladeshi cartoons looking good.

Is it still the standard to sit all day at my desk and surf websites, 4chan, etc. nonstop. Watch youtube. Listen music. Research. But everything while sitting on my ass at my uncomfortable desk. I've tried an ipad years ago but it felt so inefficient, even web browsing that I gave up on it rather quick. Also annoying for multi tasking like watching something on youtube but also be able to quickly do searches etc in a browser.

I've used a couple of them. Juicy is the one I use but that's mostly out of habit.

Some stuff is very hit or miss, depending on the service. I've never managed to get a Telegram account because Telegram somehow detects all their numbers are invalid, but they don't charge until the SMS arrives. Last time I created a google account, google was really unhappy and needed like 3 more SMS to verify my logins, and each one after the first signup costs a little bit extra, which was annoying. Discord in particular generally works for me quite smoothly, a single SMS and it's fine.

>.5 XMR
No idea what you're looking at, on juicy it's like $1 up to maybe $2 per number.
It's not cheap, I agree, and they recently changed their minimum topup to $10 which is also scummy IMO. I already had funds though so I've just kept using it, but you can look at the others on kycnot too. But anyway $1 for a single SMS, or even $10 if you never use it again, is definitely expensive but it's definitely not .5 XMR.

If you don't have any XMR and just need it for this signup post a cockli email or something so you don't have to fuck about with exchanges

Meta question, why hasn't 4chan implemented a PoW sort of captcha? I know the site has changed the captcha system a lot during the past few years, but even now it seems to still use one based on cloudflare + picking up letters from an image. Wouldn't it be better to use something like Anubis? we already have timers for posting so might as well do it, this way actual bots would have a harder time shitposting. We could even have a Yotsuba pic instead of the default Anubis one, or even a custom one for each board.

>>
>>110180395
It's true right now if you're using goyslop OS like Mac or Windows. Government has been collecting that info long before the AI meme though.

They're never going to disclose it either because then they wouldn't be able to use it against anyone. Even worse everyone would have real stats on peoples' inner thoughts and they wouldn't be able to bullshit you about muh pedo, muh rape culture. It would be extremely antisemitic.
>>
>>110180298
It's because the bots posting here are tailor-made for this website.
Anubis and similar schemes are good at protecting against internet-wide crawler. Anubis for example literally has an exception for the curl user-agent, so it's completely bypassable; it still works because crawlers don't use the curl user-agent, so any time they hit an anubis website it's a roadblock for them.
Obviously that's a rather extreme bypass but in general if you know what the site is using, you can literally just run the PoW in your spammer and solve it that way. If you're making a scraper meant to feed billions of pages into LLM training, and a few dozen autistic websites have bespoke PoW schemes your scraper chokes on, they're skipped as a negligible error not worth chasing down. If you're building a bot to spam on 4chan, and 4chan has a PoW captcha, you obviously just add the solver to your bot. It requires no human input, just some calculations, so it is extremely automatable; and usually the calculations are going to be much cheaper than training and running a vision model to try autosolve a "real" captcha, not to mention simpler to implement with nearly zero effort.
>>
>>110180418
There are no magical cheap SD cards. You basically have three choices
>brand names like samsung or kingston, that are known to work
>no-name chink ones, that are slightly cheaper and also might break or lose all data within a month of use who knows!
>literal scam ones that are super cheap but either do nothing or have like 1MB of storage

You can try to save money by going for the second category but chances are you'll spend more money on replacements. The best strategy is to just look through the listings for actual brand ones, if you really wanna be stingy use a price tracker like camelcamelcamel to watch for "good deals" and buy one when it's cheapest.
They're commodity goods, so if you buy an actual brand one from something like amazon (and sold by amazon or the actual brand itself, not a shady marketplace reseller) then it's going to be genuine, so you can just try to snag a good deal.

stop heating the iron to fuckin 480C you absolute fool. use 320-330C max.
first touch the pins with tip + solder, add extra in there, keep it 3-5 seconds top, you will notice the new solder flows with the old one.
do the same on all pins. all commercial hardware uses lead-free solder, which sucks ass and is a pain to work with. add some lower melt point solder, with lead, helps a lot.
add picrel as well.

I was in the Apple store today and some guy was transferring his data to a new phone and the Apple store employee started asking him in a playful tone why he had 27 Terabytes of data in iCloud, saying he’d never seen that much data. The guy said his whole family uses the same iCould account. Are these employees actually trained to sniff out pedos?

I have never successfully desoldered with a wick. I think large through-hole pins are also supposed to be even more annoying to wick than smaller surface mount solders.
Get yourself a solder sucker. The good chink one is that metal one with a red plunger that goes for around $20 or so (there's super cheap ones but they all suck, maybe you can grab one if it's literally just for this one joint and you want to save $15)
Then you heat the solder, like the other anons said use 350*C (the flux is probably burning up because the iron is way too hot), touch the pad and pin simultaneously until all the solder melts which should take a couple of seconds, jam the sucker in there and release the spring.

I don't get the meme of "you have terabytes of storage = pedo" comes from.
Most of the reddit datahoarders download porn, that's true. But usually it's not kiddie porn, and also as time marches on it's more and more normal to archive media locally given that shit gets taken down from everywhere.
It's like seeing someone using private browsing and immediately assuming CP, I just don't get the logic.

Anyway
>Are these employees actually trained to sniff out pedos?
No but I'm pretty sure iCloud is.
>>
>>110185784
Because they recently decided locally generated cp is legal in the US as long as you don't share, so lots of people with assets to lose and pedo adjacent tastes are now ardent local AI enthusiasts. Which totally isn't a setup for future crackdowns, but that's another discussion.

27TB isn't actually that much either. It's like one hard drive. It's a lot for a basic bitch retail cloud account maybe.
>>
>>110186687
The discussion now, and in general for a while long before the generative AI boom, is about storage = cp. Generative image AI itself is only a couple of years old let alone this generated cp ruling from like a few months ago and has nothing to do with what I'm talking about.

27TB is quite a lot for "miscellaneous" data, it's only not a lot if you have some specific large dataset you're collecting (e.g. porn, or archived youtube videos, or screen recordings, or AI data, or general data from whatever else etc.). Also 28-30TB hard drives are barely available on the consumer market, so I'd say 27TB is at least two hdds.
>>
>>110187096
Yeah but before the AI boom storage was cheap as shit. Now the only people buying have a specific use case in mind.
>28-30TB hard drives are barely available on the consumer market
They've been consistently available for 2 years in the US. You might not like the price, but you can get them.

I got money for the first time in my life and wanna waste it on a mid-high range pc. I have a 6700 right now and am trying to figure out if a 9070xt or a 5800 is more bang for the buck

>>
>>110188807
Do you ever want to do AI, like running stable diffusion or a qwen model locally? If so 5080.
Can you get 5080s for a reasonable price near you, rather than 5x inflated? If so might be worth it regardless.

I've never bought a prebuilt but I think on the face of it if it's genuinely cheaper then why not. Make sure to check reviews of the vendor/builder to make sure they aren't prone to completely fucking it, ideally it should have some warranty or at least a generous return period so you don't get chinked if it's shipped half broken.

Also consider asking in /pcbg/.
>>
>>110189075
theres a prebuilt with like a 5080 for 2500 so I thought that was pretty good given the current state of shit. just wanna buy before it gets worse

also yeah I will sorry I don't use g too often unless like im buying a new phone or troubleshooting.
>>
>>110189128
I will note that purely in actual rendering, AMD cards are generally much cheaper nowadays while being pretty much as powerful, and therefore much better. So if you play mostly older games and aren't interested in local AI (or want to buy dedicated stuff for AI, e.g. used 3090s might still be better bang for the buck in terms of vram compared to a single 5080) then AMD is not a bad choice.
Its main downsides are
>FSR is generally always lagging behind DLSS
>framegen is either nonexistent or also simply worse
>ray/path tracing, they've mostly caught up but I think the 50xx series is still somewhat faster at it
>compute and AI support is generally worse and slower

So if you want to play modern games with high path tracing, heavy DLSS and framegen etc., that's nvidia's domain. If you want to run local AI, that's nvidia's domain. If you want to just play normal games, rendered normally, then AMD is better bang for the buck.

Can someone explain Native Vlans to me like the retard I am. I just don't understand any benefit or purpose.

Access ports untagged. One Vlan. No point tagging really.
Trunk ports. switch to switch. Multiple vlans, things are tagged so things know where to go.

Native vlans... untagged frames received on the trunk.
A trunk port can carry multiple VLANs simultaneously over a single physical connection. THEN how is the untagged being sent to where it should be received?
or are native vlans just dead ends?

A)if it's untagged how does it know which vlan to go to/?
B)why do we even keep the frame if it's untagged. Shouldn't it just be shadow realmed?

How it used to be on firefox is that all these windows would only show 10-15 of the most recently accessed tabs with a show more button on the bottom if you wanted to see the contents of the whole window. And it was wonderful because it was super easy and convenient to swap between windows. In one of the latest updated they must have disabled that feature because opening up the other two window tabs just shows their full contents. Is there any way I can revert it back to the way it was?

I know this is a common question. I know that there is a common answer; just don't do it and you'll be fine!

I don't like leaving things up to chance. Some idiot WILL eventually do it to me through an update, a program you never expected would have retarded developers for example. Or worse, some dumbass approves code from an agent that they barely looked over. What are the best protections against this? I am NOT talking about preventing myself from doing it to myself, more specifically how do I prevent a command like this from being run at all? And yes, I do make backups like a paranoid sperg.

I'm using Fedora and if I'm being dumb or I'm more protected than I think, just say so. I saw some stuff about SELinux preventing this, some stuff about wrapping rm with safe-rm. I just want to talk about it with real people.

Are "gaming keyboards" a meme?
I'm in the market for a new one and im confused why some are $10 and other $200
>>
>>110197884
Mechanical keyboards are better than membrane keyboards for gaming but don't overpay them. A cherry mx mechanical switch keyboard is on average 70-100 but a membrane keyboards can be $10.
>>
>>110197884
the underlying hardware is different
the first difference is the cheap keyboards use a rubber membrane, they require an inconsistent amount of force to press
"gaming" keyboards of an appropriate quality will have switches that are more linear, which means less stress on your hands

often you're just paying for the branding and the flashy LEDs though though so just don't aim too high. There's a whole realm of 'tism to be explored in hotswappable switches and shit too.
>>
>>110197884
yea. you gotta go by makers reputation. i have a cherry mx and its pretty tit and you can pick the feel of the keys.

Some keyboards are addressable RGB others are just RGB. The difference is one is fully customizable and the other only has generic presets.

focusing on rm specifically with stuff like safe-rm is not a great idea imo, other utils can fuck you up just as good
I don't think you can prevent anything completely, just limit your exposure.
Avoid appimages or granting flatpaks the user-files permission.
If required, use bwrap or firejail (they configure selinux/apparmor for you)
and above all take backups
if this is still unacceptable, use qubes
>>

I'm sorry to have done so but google suggested it was due to a background update of edge, which was enabled. I don't see anything in group policy about edge updates but it could be I'm blind, none of that shit is logically sorted or apparently searchable.

It was the first so more things supported it. So people mostly bought nvidia for it so more things supported it etc.
Then AMD made ROCm and instead of working really hard to try to catch up they made it shit, barely supporting any of their GPUs and barely working drivers especially on windows etc.
So nobody had any reason to swap to ROCm and kept only supporting CUDA, so people kept buying nvidia, and so nobody ever had any reason to support ROCm since everyone uses nvidia anyway so you can just add CUDA support and be done with it.

It's not even a story of the underdog being crushed by the early mover, it's a story of the underdog going "yeah this massive market, where breaking would be really hard and require a genuinely technically superior solution plus hard work to get people to switch, but the gains would be absolutely massive if I got in on it? nah let me completely flop my offering" and cementing its irrelevance forever. It almost would've been better if they'd saved their developers' time and not bothered.

Oh and at one point one guy made ZLUDA which is a translation layer letting you run CUDA on AMD GPUs, and AMD issued a takedown.

AMD can be extremely, extremely retarded sometimes.

All you need is backups. You will never be able to be 100% safe from every possible issue, someone can mv / /dev/null, someone can dd if=/dev/random of=/your/storage, someone can
>cp /usr/bin/rm /usr/bin/mycoolprogram && mycoolprogram -rf /
or any of the kernel, your filesystem, or any program installed on your computer can have a bug and randomly wipe or corrupt your shit (and it it's a userspace program, it'd do it directly with syscalls, not spawning a shell to run rm -rf). Or you can fuck up and somehow get a virus or ransomware. Or your HDD can just die and then what?

Enumerating every possible way someone or something or some software can possibly break your home folder is simply impossible. Backups are THE solution. You take regular backups, using the 3-2-1 rule, make sure they're incremental and set generous retention policies, keep a PAR2 error correction for every individual backup.
Then if somehow your entire home folder is lost, you just go back and restore from a previous snapshot, easy.

Now all that being said, if you're specifically running untrusted or shady software (such as a proprietary game, or warez, or an LLM harness with tool calling, or for the paranoid even a web browser qualifies), and you expect that it has a realistic chance of actually running rm -rf due to being buggy or malicious, then run it in a container or VM without write permissions to your home folder. Sandboxing is a big topic with many possibilities and ask your favorite LLM to describe to you how to sandbox your software in a container. Incus or podman or something is probably the way to go.
>>
>>110197399
A little of both. They're just vendor-specific compute interfaces. You can't really map one to the other efficiently because they're both tied up in the back end hardware. When people say 'no CUDA no buy' they're effectively declaring themselves Jensen's bitch on an unconditional basis. Both are more or less universally supported these days. As long as you're not a filthy winshitter anyway. Even OpenVINO is fairly well supported. Just the hardware it drives is pretty broken.
>>
>>110197884
Yes, gaming keyboards are an extreme meme. It's not about mechanical or not, I've seen shitty membrane keyboard that cost $100 just because they're made by logitech/razer and have some LED lights.

Nowadays the mechanical keyboard market is extremely saturated and you can find featureful, good quality keyboards for cheap. They're also extremely simple devices, so a chink keyboard is not going to be any worse than a brand name one.
>>
>>110197847

If it's going to be transcoded to lossy anyway, you're best off having a lossless source.

>fire up Monero miner program (xmrig) without any special arguments (automatic settings)
>starts with 16 threads
>try it manually with more threads
>get marginal advantage
Why is this? What are "threads" even? When I compile programs from sources I obviously use 32 threads for compiling and it's double the speed compared to 16.

But how to boost my social media accounts without using the ad system or phone farms?

The premise is I have a small business (foot clinic), and I don't feel confident to film myself and talk or show my patients, so I just use AI to help generate some images and short videos, that are mostly OK~is.
I post on all 3 social media that matter (FB/TT/IG) but I get views like 300-500 and 2-3 likes, and next to no messages.
While other sponsored pages get +3K views.
Am I doing something wrong?
Do I need to change my posting schedule? Change my format?
Or does more views doesn't mean more customers?
Or should I ask somewhere else?

It holds arbitrary blobs of data, it's literally just that. Basically file storage if you want. They're called "objects" and not "files" because technically it doesn't need to be any sort of file that would be part of a filesystem - they're just blobs of data that can mean anything or can be used for anything.

Modern PC CPU cores can dispatch 7-8 operations in a single clock or split the dispatch heads into multiple parallel threads, usually just 2, depending on what internal heuristics say is the better strategy. Ask AI to give you a course on computer architecture if that doesn't make sense.

kb/s is a measure of how much data density the file has, but how this translates to sound depends on the compression algorithm
mp3 is pretty old, opus or AAC are better at the same bitrate
and like the other anon said it's still better to keep a lossless source unless you're really tight on space. say if you transcode them to opus now, I don't think iphone supports opus. but if you transcode them to aac, maybe not everything supports aac either. so then you might be forced to do a lossy->lossy transcode which is just extra loss for no reason. or if you transcode to mp3 everything will support it but it will be worse than any of the other options.

so just keep FLAC for storage and transcode to whatever your device needs

A core has a lot of components, and sometimes (actually pretty often) they're not all used at once so you can execute 2 threads on the same core. It's rarely actually double the speed though, and it depends on the workload. I haven't looked into it but it's possible that RandomX (the monero mining algorithm) actually uses so much of each core that trying to run two threads on one won't speed it up much at all.
>>
>>110202780
>>110203222
So the 16-core CPU reports itself as a 32-core to the OS out of convenience so the OS will keep delegating tasks as if the CPU had actual 32 processing units because that makes things fast? But it's still a 16-core when push comes to shove?
>>
>>110203455
>when push comes to shove
It is literally 16 core, physically there are exactly 16 copies of a complete independent execution pipeline in there, it's not 32-core ever. In common parlance it's 32 threads, I think linux calls it "32 logical CPUs" (as opposed to physical CPUs/cores), I don't remember what windows calls it but if it says 32 cores it's wrong.

But other than the naming, OSes usually do treat them as independent because CPUs present them as independent: the CPU says it can execute 32 parallel tasks, and the OS can therefore schedule 32 things in parallel. So the fact that it's physically 16 cores usually doesn't matter to the actual OS itself.
>>
>>110203455
They've had SMT CPUs for 25 years now so everything is aware of the cores / threads distinction. Multithreading allows CPUs to avoid pipeline stalls for branching or to keep shared resources like the memory controller busy. Which once again if you understood basic computer architecture you would know this is important.

For RandomX you're probably better off running threads = hardware thread count because it branches a lot on purpose to punish GPUs.

Would adjustable actuation not be a massive benefit for gaming though?
>>
>>110203723
How is that related to the question? A lot of "gaming" keyboards are indeed really shitty and overpriced and not even mechanical in the first place. Let alone have analog or adjustable actuation.

Now some gaming keyboards do have that yes. Whether it's useful or not depends a lot on the game, a lot of the time it's really inconsequential. If you just want rapid actuation there are "fast" switches which trigger a lot higher in the keypress than normal mechanical switches; I guess with an analog one you could adjust it to be even higher if you really wanted to. I think their main usecase is for shit like racing games though.

So there's a CVE that crashes kernels with no existing patch right now. How come the entire internet isn't down? I know there's a workaround by filtering the attack vector with nftables/iptables, but for example I run a couple of servers and I haven't bothered patching them so far and they haven't been attacked.
I used to think bots would scan the entire IPv4 space at all times and spam known vulnerabilities vectors just to try to harvest botnet members, and I always believed it because it sounds cheap to do so. How come nobody has yet done this with the new CVE and mass-crashed my servers or anyone else who is actively vulnerable and currently reachable on the public internet?

Transcoding lossless to lossy is totally normal for portable devices. Just don't get rid of the lossless files.
>>
I need a portable HDD to plug into my PC's via USB, but everything is overpriced right now and I want to buy a refurbished or used internal HDD instead and just use a USB enclosure

However, the only drives I can find for a really good price are SAS rather then SATA, and I can't seem to find a enclosure that will work with SAS drives that would function like a portable drive that's not obscenely overpriced, unless I'm just not looking in the right places

Do they not exist or what?

I want to use multiple displays with my laptop, where I have one cable going from my laptop to a hub, and then one cable from the hub to my main 1440p monitor via Displayport, and one from the hub to my second monitor via HDMI (it's old and has no DP etc input)

After a lot of searching, I found a hub that has a removable input cable (most have un-removable 2-3 inch long USB-C input cables, which is too short for my needs) and does 120hz at 4k (which I wanted for future-proofing), but when I try to use it, while the main monitor detects an input and turns on, it says no signal detected, while on the laptop screen (if left open rather then shut) will have a bunch of windows freezing and unfreezing, as if a external display was being plugged in and unplugged over and over. And if I unplug the cable, Windows still shows a second display being connected

I've tried to troubleshoot this, but:

>The USB C port on the laptop DOES support video, it has Displayport 1.4 support
>Both the USB C cable the hub comes with, and my longer cable power the hub, and HDMI from the hub to either monitor works with either cable, so it's not the USB-C cables not transmitting power/video or the hub being totally broken
>I've been using a USB C to Displayport cable to the main monitor till now, so my Monitor's DP input isn't broken
>I've tried two Displayport 2.1 cables and one Displayport 1.2 cable with the hub and monitor, so it's not a faulty DP cable
>I tried making my refresh rate 60hz in Windows settings to see if the hub/cables just can't do a 1440p 165hz despite what's advertised, doesn't fix it
>This: reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1ppxm5v/external_monitors_blink_in_an_out_when_on_dock/?sort=top matches my situation almost exactly, right down to it being a lenovo laptop, and many replies suggest EM interference, but unplugging or turning off my wireless speakers, mouse, keyboard etc didn't help
>I ordered a 2nd unit of this hub, behaves the same

Any ideas?

I think you're misunderstanding something here. Like >>110202889 said, you can't really compare bitrates from lossless to lossy and even across lossy algorithms. It's not that if what you're going to playback is going to be 256kbps aac anyway, you may as well convert to 256kbps mp3/aac, it's that if your device is going to transcode to a lossy format (upon playback), you may as well give it the best chance by giviving the aac encoder as much data to work with. Any AAC encoder is perceptual, so if you give it an already encoded lossy format like mp3, aac etc. then you're giving it less to work with. IIRC, iphones still transcode audio upon Bluetooth playback regardless if they're aac or not. I guess if you have to for some reason store lossy files, then go with the most widely supported format your device can play and use the highest CBR bitrate with the best encoder you have access to.
>>
>>110208311
My original assumption was:
>FLAC is too large for bluetooth's bitrate so my device will convert it (via the AAC encoder) when I use bluetooth headphones
>Since I am limited to 256kbps on bluetooth, wouldn't converting my FLACs beforehand to ~256kbs mean the AAC encoder does less work?
If the AAC encoder is still going to "digitally enhance" or "re-rencode" my lossy file for bluetooth anyway then I think I'd rather just keep everything as FLAC to give the encoder more data to work with.

Now I can't be too objective without being a little subjective. Objective since I've been on the hiring market for a few months: learn Python. Almost everyone wants you to learn back-end Python. I don't know why. But goddamn do they really want back-end Python.
Subjectively: I'd recommend M$ languages. C#, SQL Server, ASP.NET, etc. Anything on the .NET platform. If nothing else, at least learn the basics of OOP languages and SQL of any kind. Plus front-end languages like HTML or XML. It all depends on what you are looking to do. But no matter what: it is worth the time to learn at least the basics in software engineering before completely relying on AI code slop to make things for you. You're going to need to know the basics to troubleshoot what is given to you.
So to answer you question: yes. It is worth it to learn at least some sort of software engineering in the long run so you can double check what is given to you from either AI or newly recruited engineers. You need those skills to be successful and move up in the world.
