Crazy how we take zero steps to curtail outsourcing. It's also insane how modern politicians like to put on a show of "muh manufacturing we need to bring it back" while repeating the exact same drain of our nation's wealth by letting the software industry freely flow out to India.Anyway, what tech domains aren't being massively outsourced? What the fuck do """project managers""" in tech even do? In my experience the engineers are the ones who have to figure out requirements and hold meetings to plan out any given project, while the PM's boss is the one signing off on any actual decisions. It doesn't even seem like you need to know any software engineering at all to be a PM. Like I used to work in construction industry and PMs there actually had to do things and were required to have extensive industry knowledge on how standards work and how shit is built.

Then it was an ordinary company that slowly got jeetified over the 5 years I was there. They ruin everything and with the market the way it is things are only getting worse. Size of the project and scope (responsibilities and heirarchy in planning) play a big role too as far as what you're going to see a PM doing. If they're tasked to you directly to manage a project that you're working on, and they own it, then they should be doing just about everything over than the technical details. If they're adjacent, or part of a higher level part of the project, they may not be doing anything for your group in particular, and just checking in to see status/progress. The two biggest misses I see with PMs is they either don't understand what their job is, or the company doesn't understand what their job is. >>110180483yeah, it's a cycle. we cut too deep a couple of years ago, hired some 'temps' to take up the slack. all good now, nothing to do until Q1. >>110189677depends on the role, from what I've seen most of the swe roles on consumer applications want 3-5+ yoe, if you're in that range then you'll have access to 80% of jobs available. QA / devops have looser requirements (and less interviews) so they're willing to accept people that only have 1-2 yoe or some good internships and interview really well. like half the people I've met got their start interning and then applied again after graduating and got into different teams. For the more technical / lower level roles (core operating system / libraries / drivers, important internal tools, b2b / developer facing stuff) they want 10+ yoe.Idk how it works for hardware engineering. As always it helps if you know someone inside :)
