do the usual red, green blue, grey checks and see if there are any amounts of burn-in or dead pixels. if it's a new-ish model under a year old, there's no harm in keeping it
>>

Check power on time, run some tests to see if it has any even slight signs of burn-in.

after having alot of trouble many years ago with a win10 install getting borked because i was gaming on the same drive i had my OS on, i keep everything compartmentalised.

Can't imagine keeping everything on one drive and no idea why anyone builds a pc that way, have 1 small 500gb-1TB drive for OS and all important apps, 1-2 ssds/m.2s for gaming, then whatever for data storage. Never fails me. Especially when i got cucked with a Tforce ssd that died on me within months, i only lost all my game installs on steam, i didn't have to reinstall the OS or hope my backup worked etc.

what's the current meta on pre-built vs laptop vs DIY gaming PCs? Is it still better to build your own PC?
My poorfag friend has a budget of $1500 and is asking me for advice but I haven't kept up with prices in awhile, and with AI making everything expensive as shit I'm thinking of just telling him to wait until next year, then either the AI market will crash and he can buy a cheap GPU, or the world will end and he won't need vidya.

CPU costs are flat. The costs to build around the CPU are going up. Motherboard, Monitor, RAM, SSD, KBM, etc.

building your own pc is always better unless you are actually retarded at using computers. in that case just buy a prebuilt because if anything happens you can literally return it to the store and get a new/different one.

>>110236891
thanks fren. He mentioned wanting to play the latest Final fantasy remakes so maybe 16gb of ram will be fine. I had some extra lying around but sold it all for shekels when I saw prices had spiked :(
Looks like a 7800x3d is only $250 used here, a used mobo is $75, memory is ridiculous but fits within the budget ($170 for 16gb of 5600 ddr5), but GPUs are of course ridiculous.
>>
>>110236991
yeah I was just curious if pre-builts were getting access to MSRP parts like during the crypto days or if gaming laptops were relatively unaffected by AI demand, but it seems like everything is fucked except for apple (sort of... maxed out memory on a Mac Studio is still $25k...)
>>
>>110236998
16gb is fine for 99% of vidya and you can always add more ram later when/if prices ever come down. For a $1500 budget i would get a cheaper ryzen cpu and put most of the budget towards the gpu as you can always swap out to a zen6/zen7 x3d later on.

If you apply minimum wage to the work and you're starting at zero knowledge, then prebuilt makes sense. However if you're young and you got tangential hobbies, the return is there. Especially with LLMs what might have taken 2 weeks of afternoon research is perhaps an intense weekend.

What is seldom mentioned is the marketwatching. Going used + marketwatching is where you'll actually save money. Now you got so many lowkey workarounds that even supposed DIY PC space doesn't talk about + aliexpress. It's a great time to be a little bit creative.
