ok, someone explain to me how the fuck pantone Coated Vs Uncoated is SUPPOSED to work.

anyone whos messed about with pantones knows that youre supposed to use C swatches for coated paper, and U for Uncoated paper

but colors NEVER translate across,
1235C looks nothing like 1235U

so what the hell do i do if a clients brand guide only has C swatches?

what do i do if I need to print on the opposite type of surface from whatever swatch i have??

shits garbage

Stick to one and the client wont notice the difference.
If you mixed them you're FUCKED

If you do only use one type and client says something just say "Hey uuhh different type of paper different light reflection yadiyada"
>>
>>462462
So exactly my problem, bullshit system doesn't work.

Literally set 1235C to printer.
They printed 1235U
Client is pissed.

How the fuck is anyone supposed to use this shit?
"We use panties because they're exact and you know exactly how the colors going to come out"
BULLSHIT

Then purchase a color guide for each Coated and Uncoated and then use different colors to match them.
The Pantone code just mean we mix X colors with X colors. Doesnt mean it's the same color at all.

For exmple 185-C is closer to 186-U than 185-U

Yes they don't look alike because U will neve be as bright as C

Tis exactly my problem.

No client (or even project manager) will ever understand that, and they DO get mad about it.

>bullshit system doesn't work.

It works just fine if you follow basic common sense protocols like having the printer provide a final proof of the actual ink color on the actual stock, that the client can then approve and sign off on.

Of course that can create added expense, but that's the cost of high precision/ nitpicking. If the client balks at the time/expense/hassle and says it's not that important then put *that* in writing and have them sign off on that, or politely decline the job if you think they are lying.

If the printer balks at creating/providing accurate proofs then they're the wrong printer for that job/client.

All of this is literally why the Pantone system exists as a color matching standard, it doesn't work without people who understand how to use it.

>So what the hell do i do if a clients brand guide only has C swatches?

Tell him "it doesn't work without people who understand how to use it"

Then buy the Pantone shader and show them the actual thing or at least try to explain to them that it is how it is
