These things are literally built to glide through the air but with enough added power to push more force up on the wings than there is forcing the plane down from gravity. Shit even the FAA tells you to occasionally do power off approaches to keep your skills up.Even small cessnas have a glide ratio of like 9 to 1 which is like nearly 2 miles per 1000 feet of altitude, which cessnas are usually cruising at anywhere from 2500 feet all the way up to 14,000 feet. At a speed of 65 knots or so, at minimum you have a solid like 4 minutes of glide time and 5 miles worth of distance, which should be plenty to figure something out. Gets even crazier with big heavy ass planes like the 747s, they have a 15:1 so from a normal cruising altitude of 35,000 feet you have over 20 minutes and over 100 miles of distance. Plus, larger planes have an advantage of not relying on a single engine for all the power, allowing it to still go pretty damn far. The 737 can be missing 1/2 engines and still be alright, 747 can lose 3/4 engines and still be alright. There was one photo that went around a decade or so ago of a plane doing a ferry flight after getting clearance and just flew with one of the engines missing and casually chilling in the main cabin because of a cracked engine mount.
