It generally hits the filesize limit when encoding with VP8 but not VP9 for some reason.

I just stick to VP8 for most stuff because it normally doesn't make a difference with old poor quality parent footage, but when I need VP9 for something that would otherwise have a bunch of artifacting or something I use VSDC.

It isn't. VP9 is the technologically superior successor which has better compression. Likewise, AV1 is the technically superior successor to VP9. But this site doesn't support AV1 (yet), so VP9 is the best currently supported format.

For the same reason, Opus should always be used instead of Vorbis. But unlike with the AV1 video codec, there isn't any superior successor to Opus when it comes to audio.

Actually no. I use constrained quality mode. VP9 has a mode where you specify a bit rate and a cq level (in vp9 CQ is constrained quality, not constant quality like in VP8 or x264). It basically means it will target a level of quality, and do it's best to get there but use the bitrate as a max, if it can achieve the target quality without maxing the bitrate, then it will do that and not spend the extra bits.

I can usually find the content I want without DRM but yes, on places like some OF creators that pay for the DRM feature, the only option you have is to capture rather than rip. So screen record with ffmpeg or something and then trim it and encode. Depending on your setup you may have to turn off GPU assist in the browser to record the screen or you just get a black recording.

dont bother calculating it, it depends on the level of noise in the source vid and how much of the frame has movement. thats why i gave a ballpark of 1M bytes for a 30s clip to be under 4mb. if the video is low light and has a grainy static over the whole frame thats gonna be way off but for the most part thats it.

if you export a 30s vid at 1M and its say 4.25MB then try again at 900K b/s. see the estimation logic at play?

Thanks for making this tutorial, anon. I'd like to further add that people should consider using that Reframe feature even when it isn't to remove black bars. Every video is different, but a lot of the time the interesting part makes up just a fraction of the video so in those cases just trimming the video down to only that interesting part is worthwhile. Remember that your limited bitrate budget goes further when you trim off the excess you don't need. Say the video is a 16:9 ratio of a sexy woman standing in a room doing whatever. Reframing that to a 1:1 ratio which focuses only on the woman is going to give you a better output because it trims off the stuff no one cares about.

It depends on the source. 2 pass isn't always as useful as a single pass, but there are certain sources where you'd wish you used 2 passes. When you do a single pass, the encoder (libvpx-vp9, libx264/5 etc.) has to make conservative estimates as opposed to if it had the information from a pre pass to work out exactly where the chosen bitrate needs to go more effectively (due to the infinite look ahead that 2 pass encoding offers). Yes, single pass is worse than 2 passes, but there are situations where it won't really matter. Sorry for rambling like a sperg.

Not relevant for posting on 4chan, but I do recommend LosslessCut for when it's desired or necessary to maintain quality when cutting up videos, since it does not re-encode them. Could be useful for losslessly cutting up and splicing together multiple segments of video and then later work your way down to fit your specific needs.

As long as the video editor is certainly doing 2-pass encoding then I guess it's good. You can learn how to use ffmpeg yourself since they all use ffmpeg under the hood. On windows you can put it in system32 them use it in terminal. Doing a 2 pass encode yourself means doing two different commands.

I'm honestly surprised the encoder was able to get that much out of 370kbps. Granted the source was a well encoded bluray (32mbps h.264 iirc) that already looked lightly denoised.
