I think my idea about phrasing affecting dynamic dialogue variety was wrong. But now I've had a lot more success by only giving a description of general character traits, thoughts and emotions without specifying what the character should do and say in particular and instead letting it act out the character and any relevant dialogue based on those character traits. This has led to more variety and intelligence in the dialogue. Another thing that has worked is example sentences with placeholders like "Give me the X", or "X the Y"

I've never tried changing the voice characteristics (beyond tone and emotion), so I don't really know. In theory in a good model a regular woman should be able to have a male or alien voice but it might be a limitation of the current model that characters have whatever voice the model thinks fits best.
