But now I've had a lot more success by only giving a description of general character traits, thoughts and emotions without specifying what the character should do and say in particular and instead letting it act out the character and any relevant dialogue based on those character traits. This has led to more variety and intelligence in the dialogue. Another thing that has worked is example sentences with placeholders like "Give me the X", or "X the Y"

I've never tried changing the voice characteristics (beyond tone and emotion), so I don't really know.
